Street Legal Ice racing!

Like to take your Subie out on a fresh snow covered road and hang the tail out in the winter? :D
What if I told you that you could come out and race your daily driven car wheel to wheel on a custom plowed 1 to 1.5 mile ice road course for just $35 a day? That includes a warm up session and three 20 minute heat races adding up to over an hour of seat time each race day! Sounds too cheap right? Surely any kind of organized automobile racing costs hundreds more than that right? Sounds too good to be true?
Then what if I added in the fact that all you need to race is a fire extinguisher a set of quality winter tires [studded or unstudded], and a Snell 95 or better helmet? There are no roll bars required in this class. They are encouraged as is any other type of safety equiptment you'd like to have. But most people just drive to the lake and run their stock street cars. Jeff Denmeade runs his Impreza each winter and has the time of his life out with us. Notice how w-i-d-e the track is plowed. Plenty of room to race and keep a safe distance from other cars.

OK, you're saying to yourself a this point, "I'm not going to race my beautiful street car wheel to wheel with some knucklehead that's gonna slide into me in a corner." Well let me tell you this: This is A.M.E.C. Ice Racing's Street Legal [SL] and SLU [Unstuddd] classes and we've had a strict "No Contact" rule in place for two full seasons now. It is the cleanest wheel to wheel road racing you will find anywhere. In fact, it's comparible to Vintage racing where you make darn sure that you avoid contact at all costs. Unlike SCCA, DIRT, or NASCAR, it is rare that anyone's car even gets a scratch. Obviously there's no guaranty of no contact, but these classes have shown that you really can drive your car to the race, race all day and drive it home no worse for wear. The SL classes are where you'd run your stock street car [no engine mods] carefully and with respect for everyone else's car on the track. I'd like to say it is a gentlemen's class, but I can't because we have several ladies running very competitively with us each season.
Sound interesting? Please take a look at this new SL and SLU class web page from our Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club [A.M.E.C.] website SL Ice Racing.

Yes, I've been meaning to try that. Maybe now that the RS has 120,000 miles on it she's old enough to go shoulder to shoulder! ;)

What class would an STi with a reflashed ECU be in, still SL/SLU
A stock prepped STi with 4 point roll bar and driver would be more than 3200#, would they not be permitted?
Do you have novice heats/sessions?

Do you have novice heats/sessions?
Hello turboICE,
No problem with the 3,200 lbs. That limit is based on the car's original curb weight and the driver is not counted. You are good for either SL or SLU.
Don't mention to anyone that your ECU is reflashed and they won't know. ;)
Beleive me, with 300+ h.p. you will rarely be able to floor the car except for on the straights. :p
We don't have novice sessions per say, but we DO have morning warmup sessions for everyone and they are mandatory for new drivers. Plus, all new drivers get gridded in the rear during the first race so they can take their time and learn the course and their car without the pressure of fending off the frontrunners in the first lap. That's the best bet if you haven't ice raced before.

Someone forget to tell Jeff Denmeade that when he ran his pristine WRX with us two years ago. He is seen here racing against another AWD turbo car, Art Mayew's Audi Quattro Coupe! All had a blast without even a scratch. There is lots of racing room and you can start in the rear any time you want until you get the confidence to show what your Subie can really do. :)
So.. how far in advance do you know about events?
Ice racing is one of those sports where mother nature always has the last word. Usually we go out and check the lake[s] we want to run on a Thursday for the minimum consistent 12" of thickness. We usually make the call on Friday afternoon before the Sunday race. We have had as much as 30" of ice one lake last year. :)

Another ice racing option in the central NH area:
http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/events/2004/ice-racing.asp
Its a timed race, no bumper to bumper, so your only chance for a dent is in the parking lot. ;)
Reg fee is $20, $15 if you are a BMW member. Besides the main track there is always one or two practice courses so you can go for as much seat time as your gas tank will permit.

I guess the big brakes and other items put the STi over the edge. :D We have our own electronic scales we use at tech if there is a question about the weight of someone's car. I would imagine that if you took the spare and jack out of the car before you brought it to tech you might get it under 3,200 lbs. ;)
I weighed a brand new Saaburu 9-2X and found that it only weighed 3,120. I was very surprised.

Also I remembered reading in Sport Compact Car that the WRX wagon weighed something like 3180. That's why I weighed one for myself. That takes all of the speculation out of it.

I wanted to get out for this last year but never got a chance. I was thinking of it for this year, bit now I'm nervous about the weight numbers being so close to the max.
If someone makes the trip out but tips the scales over 3200, will they get a reprieve based on the advice in this thread and still get to run? Or is the only options frantically stripping weight out of the car or going home without ice time?
Thanks!
Chris
i think i might hafta bring my neon up there and "visit my grandparents" in utica this looks like fun alls u need is a helmet and an extinguisher?
Pretty much. :) Actually, compared to any other form of automobile racing, it is so easy to prep your car for A.M.E.C. ice racing, it's amazing.
The helmet needs to be a Snell 95 or better and the fire extinguisher needs to be at least a 2 lb dry-type extinguisher mounted in a fire extinguisher holder with a STEEL STRAP and LATCH. The plastic straps you get with a WalMart extinguisher are a joke. I have a WalMart extinguisher :D, but I bought a metal latch from my local hardware store. I didn't drill any holes in my car. I just used an existing hole in my console and used a longer screw.
If you'd like to read the complete rules. they are HERE. Keep in mind that 90% of them pertain to the full race Menard tire caged cars only. Not to the Street Legal class cars we are discussing here.

Here's another possibility for those who want to get out on the ice, but don't have the experience or confidence to run door to door.
It's an annual event called the "Studs on Ice" and it is a solo time trial event on the same huge frozen road race course! We have it the day before our regular weekly wheel to wheel races. So if you're coming from out of state, you can run the "Studs" event on Saturday, stay overnight in a local motel and race in the Street Legal or Street Legal Unstudded classes on Sunday! You'll have the advantage of already knowing the track like the back of your hand. ;)
This year's event will be held on Saturday February 12th, on Round Lake in Round Lake, NY. Round Lake is about 20 minutes north of Albany, right off exit 11 of I-87 a.k.a. the "Northway". I will post a link to the actual event flyer shortly. It will have directions and motel info in it.
By the way, even though the event is called "Studs on Ice" you are not required to have studded tires. But proper winter tires are almost mandatory, such as Bridgestone Blizzaks, Nokian Hakka Q's, Goodyear Ultra Grip, Michelin X-Ice, etc. Otherwise if you try to run all season or even regular summer tires, you will most likey end up needing to be pulled from a snow bank. Yes, all season tires are that bad on the ice.
Take a look at last year's "Studs on Ice" results and pics HERE.
Cheers,

Cool, how about rounding up some local motel info for me Tim? :p

Sure, let's see... in Round Lake there's... absolutely nothing.
I'd imagine Clifton park is the place to stay. A bunch of new hotels on 146, and it's about a 5 min drive up rt. 9 to get to Round Lake from there. I can get some more info for ya if you'd like.

Mike - I love the date you picked for Studs! Gives me a weekend break after Sno*Drift! Count on me and a co-driver, and I'm also going to try and get Otis to bring the STI rally car.

We had a guy tow his RX7 all the way up from South Carolina last year. That's hard core!
I can beat that. Last year Michigan Ice Racing Association ( http://www.michiganiceracingassociation.com ) had an anti-snowbird. Retired, and lives in Florida, but comes up to Michigan for the winter to ice race.
If you live in Michigan, Indiana, or parts of Illinois and Ohio and are interested in the same basic concept but with fewer rules, see the MIRA site or let me know.

You know you're sideways when you can look back up track at your chasers without using your mirrors!

What's the setup like on that MR2? I wouldn't mind trying that sometime with mine, but I don't figure the Azenis would work very well.... unless I added some sheet metal screws to the equation :)

I'd have to check my log to know for sure, but I'm either running Green Diamond Icelanders or Blizzak MZ-02s in that picture. I have a set of each, since they were so cheap, only $60/tire for either one. Unfortunately, Green Diamond prices have gone way up... I guess I told too many people about them. The MZ-02s are discontinued, but WS-50s work well, too.
Otherwise, that's a regular Solo2 MR2, with adjustable Konis, a bunch of front camber, and a TRD sway bar. Was my daily driver until I sold it in March. This year I'm running my new daily driver, a '91 Turbo. Set the shocks full-soft, let out some air from the tires, and have fun! In-car videos for those folks on the fence to check out.
I have a set of studded tires ( Kold Kutters, not screws ) for sale, that I bought from another guy with a '91 MR2. Used them last year, but probably won't this year.
Oh yeah Edit: For the folks in icy areas not yet mentioned, you may want to check this list of all the ice racing clubs I know of. If you know of one not listed there, please let me know, thanks.
