True, but going on a diet, even an Atkins version, will take time. Taking stuff out of your car is instant gratification :D

Hmmm...I'm not so sure about that.
I have reduced my weight to power ratio from 21.82 to 20.99. Removing approx. 90 lbs (2400 lbs to ~ 2310 lbs) from my car has the same affect on the weight to power ratio as adding about 4.3 HP. So maybe 20 lbs = 1 HP is more accurate. Actually, on a heavier car like an STi, it's even less than that...
Take my advice: don't permanently gut your back seat area. The road noise gets pretty annoying, not to mention hearing the fuel pump whistle and other little creaks and bumps you wouldn't normally hear.

ScreaminFast,

most of what you removed was good, but the CF hood probably didn't save you anything (if at all). A CF trunklid would have saved you much more. I would like to do a ti catback, it would save me about 20 lbs. I also did the u-brace removal and replaced with the Cusco Ver 2 lower arm brace. Also replaced the seats (big weight saved).

honestly i did the CF hood because i like the look on my white car, and its the reverse cowl kaminari one to promote airflow across the engine bay. As for a trunk lid, I'm not a fan of a carbon wing over a carbon trunk, so i'll do a primitive racing fiberglass trunk w/ an APR CF racing wing, or something similarly huge ;)
i want a cage, like the cusco or sti one, but it adds weight. However, safety > weight :D

Those cages are just for looks so they just add weight. Neither the sti or the cusco one is sanctioned for any kind of racing.

i heard that about the cusco, but i wasn't sure about the STi one. Thanks for the info :)
Any recommendations for a pretty lightweight, but effectivecage? Currently I just have the speedware harness bar.

Look into a Autopower cage, should fit the bill for you.

hey, import tuner has a really good article on shedding weight; you should really read it; it even has levels and stuff for beginner, advanced, etc.
| my03gng | 05-18-2004 02:23 AM |
it's also not about simply loosing weight, its about corner weighrt balance (so that each corner of the wheel is of equal weight)
and shifting the center of gravity, if u look at the construction of a wrc car, they take out the panels, replace it by light panels and they move the drivers seat back!! way back, just slightly in from of where the back seats are supposed to be, the lowers and shifts the center of gravity more to the middle creating a more blanced setup, apparently, balance is the key!!

for those of you so concerned about what your car weighs, what are you yourself weighing in at?
I can see a guy that weighs 140 pounds being a weight weenie, but some 300 pound dude worrying about taking 20 pounds off his car so it'll go faster sounds a little odd.
as a start, i'm weighing in at 180
also just put in jic flta2's, much lighter than the stock wrx suspension. But I have a trailer hitch which probably weighs in at 30-40 pounds or so, and the giant sti wing, which I have no clue what that weighs. I'm curious how much my autocross times would go down if I did a lap with my current setup, then a lap wingless, without the trailer hitch and with a braille lightweight battery. thats probably 70 or so pounds right there.

Why not? Weight is weight the less the better. The 300lb guy will be starting with a disadvantage under the 140lb guy so why should he give the 140lb guy a bigger advantage by not carring about the weight of his car?

it is a hell of a lot easier to take 20 lbs off the car then the body.

When you understand just how serious Braille is about weight savings, come talk to us about other lightweight solutions besides a lightweight battery.

There's also a grey bar underneath the rear seat that weighs 7 to 9 lbs i'd say. The purpose of this bar is to protect rear passengers from a side-collision. There's a misconception that it provided rigidity to the chassis, but if you look at where it's bolted down, you'll see it's not even bolted to the chassis at all, it's bolted to some elevated pieces of tri-ply steel sheets.. Just have your rear-seat passengers sign off on form before riding ;)

There is a prototype cf hood and trunk in the works along with some fixed back seats designed in conjunction with Recaro.
