Terrible windshield wipers

The wipers on my 04 WRX are terrible! They are really streaky, and they leave a big line of water/dirt right in front of my line of vision. Ive tried cleaning them, that did nothing. They are bad in just rain, not to mention wet salty slush and snow. The car has 15,000 miles, which was never time to change on any other of my cars. Is this a typical Subaru thing, or did I just get some junky wipers? I am going to the dealer tomorrow to have them look at the first gear crunch and get the oil changed and all that since I haven't been in there in a while, are wipers a wear item that they will replace under warranty for me?

Mine worked fine for about 50k miles. Then I replaced them with some PIAA ones that work really well.

I change mine 2-3 times a year....I have no idea how you get 50K out of a set of wipers.

I got them from pdm-racing.com which is a little cheaper, but the shipping charges are very high. So I'd just get them from tirerack. They come with some rain-x type stuff that you apply as well and with that they work awesome.

I replaced mine a week ago, got 31k out of them.

Im about to replace mine for the 3rd time and my car has a little over 20000 miles on it.

I replace mine twice a year and like to coat them lightly with some rainX which seems to help them slide a little better. Never had any streaking problems.

Someone once pointed out on here that the wipers on a MY04 have likely been sitting on that car since 03, when the car was probably produced. In that time they've been sitting in the sun, in most cases, and slowly deteriorating.
And yes, my 04's wipers sucked. I replaced them with a set of Rain X blades from Wal-Mart. $16 later, and I have clean streakfree windshields.

Napa's winter blades are great. They don't get ice buildup in them and they work well. Not the best if you are concerned with "bling" with your blades, but they are the best I have found, especially if you live in a "wintery" climate.

Do you have to reapply the silicon windshield treatment, or is it just a one time deal? I hate Rain-X and this sounds like a similar deal. I hope I'm wrong since I've heard good things about these wipers.

30K+ and my FIRST and only set of OEMs are great as well. It has to do a lot with how and what you use to clean your windshield though.

The silicon windshield treatment comes from the wiper blade itself, so it's just a one time deal. In fact, the instructions state that after putting on your PIAA wiper blades, you should turn on the wipers for about 5 min. so the silicon has a chance to build up a layer on your windshield.
The little packet you see in the packaging is just an alcohol prep pad to clean the windshield before putting on the PIAA wiper blades.
The wipers are awesome! There's no chatter, no streaking, and they wipe cleanly.
It's nice and rainy here in Baltimore, so I'll get good pics for all of you.

I got the PIAA blade from tire rack. Pricey but excellent at about two months old. They are a little too expensive to just use to clear ice, so I may treat these better and thus they may work better.

Well I went in to the dealer this morning and they said theyd look at it, and lo and behold, I have new free wiper blades! It only cost me $200 for the 15,000 mile service, which I am thinking is a waste, but its a show of good faith that I bring it in for this stuff if I ever need major warranty work.

I didn't read all the responses, but replaced my wipers within 5k on my '04 STi. Opted for PIAA Silicon blades and they're amazing. A week later I replaced my Wrangler's blades with a silicone (Silblade, as PIAA doesn't make them small enough). Recently my brother was out for the Holidays from CO - he commented on how amazing the visibility was in both rides, and was gifted a set of new blades for his Wrangler. I also gave a set to both parents for their cars.....I'm that much a believer in the improvement. :)

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Looks like I'll be ordering a set once winter clears out of here.

This is the front of my car. You can see the PIAA wipers don't really look too different from OEM...

This is what the rain looks before activating my wipers. The initial coat of silicone the PIAA instructions direct you to lay down (via 5 min. application of the wipers after new install) causes the water to bead up.

And this is the excellent result after one swipe. No chatter or streaking, just clarity.
I hope this helps in your decision to make a purchase of an excellent product. If you do decide to buy, please buy from the Tire Rack and support NASIOC.
Thanks.

I run the Bosch Micro Edge Excel and they are excellent. I have been tempted by the PIAAs but I want to wait to see what their durability is like.

I made a heater kit for my OEM wipers and they still work perfectly after 72K miles.
No ice or snow buildup either so they work great throughout winter.

I found that the ones that came with my 05 weren't great either. After a couple of months I decided to change them before they got really bad and went with some basic trico wipers which worked much better. I kept the original ones in my trunk in case one ever gets damaged in the middle of a trip. I too find that I change my wipers about twice a year.
| PoopRSkupe | 01-14-2005 02:22 PM |
im using the bosch micro edge excel too. they are awesome. best wipers i've ever had but i never tried the PIAA. i think as long as you get silicon and not rubber you're in the clear. and yeah i dont know how anybody gets more than 20k out of wipers. mine are always done in a year, but i have yet to see how long the bosch's will last.

I was going to pick up the Valeo wipers from Tire Rack but went with these hella-cheap knock offs from Crappy Tire. I've had them on for a month, and they are much better [so far] than stock or regular blades. I threw down some Rain-X with my regular blades, but they still froze up, chattered and were generally teh suk. I should probably add that driving in the winter around Calgary means the windshield is barraged by a mix of snow, salt and gravel/sand. I'm only on my second winter in this car and i'm going to have to buy a new windshield this summer!

Not sure about the PIAA blades warranty but "Silblades" have a 5yr warranty and are the sh@#!! They are the only blades i put on any car that i own (03 wrx and 01 grand cherokee larado). http://www.msfoster.com/silblade.html A must have if you only want a clear windshield and want to spend around $25 for the life of your car.
| yellowrxo2 | 01-15-2005 09:15 AM |
run your wipers dry for a minute or two every season to keep them clean of oily mess than causes streaks. Also make sure you de-ice or scrape your winshield before turning on your wipers so as not to break the hardened rubber during winter. Just a common sense maintenance routine and I have been able to extend the life of my wipers on all 4 cars. I have the PIAA sils on my honda though and they have been great for 2 years now. Streak free but so does the stock wipers on the other cars following that maintenance routine.

20,000 miles on my OEM wiper blades before I went with PIAA. I alway clean the blades when I wash my car and also use Rain-X. OEM blades were still
working fine when I took them off. I normally get 2 years out of a set new
blades. I love the PIAA blades. This is my 1st set and would buy them again.

Argh! My 05's wipers suck nuts too. It leaves a big smear right on the windshield right in front of my face. But I'm debating whether or not to get new blades. It doesn't rain very frequently in so cal. Does anyone know if the dealer will just replace them if I take it in and complain?

Wipers on your car are covered under warranty for 3 years, 36,000 miles
Most of you should have no problem getting them replaced under warranty as long as they are Subaru wipers (you haven't replaced them with aftermarket yet) and when you go to the dealer, tell them they streak...don't just say "replace my wipers" IF they give you a hassle, tell them they are a wear item and to look it up on Subaru's website.

I live in AZ.. SO I live in a pretty harsh environment for wipers... I've only had to replace my wipers a total of 3 times (including replacing the OEM ones).. I use, and still recommend Triple-Edge.. I replaced the ones on my truck twice with the same brand.. I now have 100k on the truck and 80k on the Subie..
I will say that the lifetime warranty for Triple-Edge is the best.. they sent me replacements and a set of "spares" free of charge.. They even Next-Day mailed them to me.. :) not bad for a $15-$20 (can't remember exactly, it's been YEARS..) investment...
BTW... I also wax my windshield when I wash the vehicles with plain Yellow Carnuba Wax.. Works better then Rain-x, which is basically a spray-on wax..
