Yeah i watched it, and this is why i don't like full bodied cars on street circuits 5 caution flags it might as well been a NASCAR race.

I guess this is the right thread.

My thoughts go out to Enge.

Enge in stable condition after crash

By Matt Beer Sunday, April 1st 2007, 07:26 GMT

Tomas Enge is in a stable condition in hospital after his violent accident in Saturday evening's American Le Mans Series race on the streets of St. Petersburg.

The Czech driver crashed his Petersen/White Lightning Ferrari 430 at Turn 4 while leading the GT2 class.

The car sustained heavy damage on the driver's side, and briefly caught fire.

Former Formula 3000, Formula One and IndyCar driver Enge was removed from the car under medical supervision before being transported to the Bayfront Medical Centre.

"Enge suffered serious trama, the extent of which is not known at this time, but was awake and alert during the rescue process," said a team statement.

"He sustained no burns. He will undergo further tests and reviews over the course of the night."

The team are currently investigating the accident, but do not believe that mechanical failure was a factor.

Petersen/White Lightning owner Michael Petersen said that the team was shaken by the accident.

"Obviously, our full attention and all of our thoughts are centred around Tomas right now," he said.

"We are all very relieved that he is stable and alert. It was a very hard hit.

"In the short time he has been with the team he has made a huge impact on all of us as a driver and as a friend. So something like this has a very big emotional impact on you and goes far beyond racing."

The IRL cars weren't much better. There was a full course caution after the first 4 turns. I think we can shorten this just a bit....
his is why i don't like street circuits
Yeah that's more like it.

As for Enge, the hit didn't look that hard, but damn. I certainly didn't expect him to have all the injuries he came out with :( That's the dangers of a street course with nowhere to scrub off speed, I guess :(
Less than 18 hours after a violent accident in the Sports Car Challenge at St. Petersburg American Le Mans Series race, Tomas Enge (a native of the Czech Republic living in Monaco) is awake, alert and resting at the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. Following overnight evaluation, X-Rays and CT scans of the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing driver, it has been determined that he has suffered a severely shattered elbow, cracked ribs, a partially collapsed lung and a potentially broken ankle. All the serious injuries were to his left side. Despite being extremely sore and bruised from the accident, Enge is talkative with medical and team personnel and is his lighthearted and humorous self.
Crap!

It looked bad when the throttle was left open. To me it looked like he clip the inside wall and just slammed alomst full speed into the outside wall (like Wheldon's). I knew it was bad when the doctor's pulled him out and he looked pretty limp.

Get well Tomas. Hope to see you on the track again soon.

I don't think he clipped a wall, because it would show on the right side of his car. Maybe the TV I was watching it on was too small, but I didn't see any damage there. The stuck throttle could have been because of his foot when he hit, more than a mechanical problem with the car causing the accident, too.

It's hard to tell what happened at this point :(

I guess I'm in the minority then. I love the street circuits and think people blow everything out of proportion every single time there is any significant accident in motorsports.

You had 24 cars on the starting grid. 22 finished the race without accidents. Yes, 1 happened to be a bit nasty at the end of a long straight. Let's not get insane here...

The ALMS race spent 1/3 of the race under full course caution, because if there's an accident, they're in the racing line... there's nowhere else for them to go. You can't flag a corner and let racing go on elsewhere. The IRL race made it through 4 corners before they wrecked and went to full course caution. Nobody likes watching a pace car lead cars around under yellow, and that's what street course racing turns into.

Beyond that, the racing isn't all that exciting or interesting. The course is too tight to allow any type of racing except divebombing into corners. Only the first and last turns seem to allow any type of passing maneuvers. It's rather boring to watch compared to real road course racing.

And 22 didn't finish without accidents. There were plenty of accidents to go around... it just so happened that those cars managed to finish the race. Yeah, there was only one nasty accident, but there were plenty of others that brought racing to a halt.

Safety concerns don't have to be the only reason we don't like street circuits.
Tomas Enge Surgery Scheduled for Friday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis
04/03/07

Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing Driver to Travel from St. Pete to Indy Today

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 3 2007 Tomas Enge (a native of the Czech Republic living in Monaco) will undergo surgery to repair his broken left elbow on Friday, April 6. The Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing driver, who was injured in an accident while leading the GT2 class at the Sports Car Challenge at St. Petersburg American Le Mans Series race, will travel from Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. to Indianapolis, Ind. for the surgery. Due to a partially collapsed lung, Enge cannot be transported by air. Therefore, the four-time American Le Mans Series race winner will travel in team owner Michael Petersens motorhome to Indianapolis.

Following the 24 hour drive from Florida to Indiana, Enge is scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis on Thursday, April 5. He will then be admitted to Methodist Hospital and will have his first face-to-face visit with Dr. Terry Trammell. Trammell, the renowned orthopedic surgeon who has helped scores of professional race drivers return to the cockpit after serious injury, has reviewed Enges X-Rays and is preparing for the surgery. Once the surgical procedures have been completed, Enge will remain in Indianapolis for rehabilitation.

Despite what is, at times, overpowering soreness from the impact, Enges spirits and attitude remain high. He is excited about moving on to the next level of his rehabilitation and ultimate homecoming with the Dale White-managed team. He will return to the No. 31 MMPIE/PAWS/Petersen Holdings/Michelin Ferrari F430 GT upon the clearance of Dr. Trammell.

Additional information will be made available following Fridays surgery or as events warrant.

Electronic well wishes are welcome and can be sent to [emailprotected] and will be forwarded to Enge.
Another Enge update....
ALMS: Enge to Return at Salt Lake
Written by: RACER staff Braselton, Ga. 5/3/2007

Less than two full months after sustaining broken ribs, a broken left elbow and lung injuries in a crash at St. Petersburg on March 31, Tomas Enge will be able to return to the cockpit of the Petersen/White Lightning GT2 Ferrari on the Salt Lake City ALMS race on May 19.

"I am overjoyed," the Czech said. "I can't wait and I believe that I will soon be as quick as I was before the accident."

Enge has also been deemed fit to drive in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Aston Martin next month.

"I am taking the test and race also as a preparation for Le Mans. I should have a better idea after a race in the Ferrari how I will feel behind the wheel of the more powerful Aston Martin."

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 3, 2007 Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing received two pieces of good news this week that will directly impact the remainder of its 2007 American Le Mans Series season. On Wednesday, Dr. Tim Weber, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at OrthoIndy, released team driver Tomas Enge (a native of the Czech Republic now living in Monaco) to drive the No.31 MMPIE/PAWS/Petersen Holdings/Michelin Ferrari F430 GT beginning at the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park. Today, team owner Michael Petersen (Las Vegas, Nev.) announced that British racing standout Darren Turner (Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England) will join Enge behind the wheel of the V8-powered machine at round five of the American Le Mans Series season at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah and round six at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT. The combination of Enge and Turner is a proven pair at Miller Motorsports Park, the drivers having teamed at Aston Martin Racing to win the GT1 class there last year.

Enge returns to the Dale White (Bozeman, MT) managed team after missing the two most recent events, the Grand Prix of Long Beach (Calif.) and the Lonestar Grand Prix of Houston, following injuries sustained at the Sports Car Challenge at St. Petersburg (Fla.) on March 31. The most serious of the injuries was a shattered left elbow which required two hours of surgery on April 6. The surgery and Enges subsequent dedication to return to racing went so well that Weber felt comfortable releasing the Czech to drive almost a month ahead of schedule.

Tomas Enge, Driver: I am overjoyed. My doctor Tim Weber told me after Wednesdays checks that there is nothing to prevent my return to the cockpit. He told me this after he saw my latest X-ray pictures. I have got permission to test with my team Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning at Salt Lake next week and to race there on May 19th. I am going to continue my intensive rehabilitation before I will climb behind the wheel. I can do exercises with weight again. I am sure that my determination to get back was a big help in my recovery. I did everything what I could have done and I think that I was an extraordinary obedient and cooperative patient. I said the news about my return to the bosses of my team and basically immediately I got phone calls from all team members that they are looking forward to see me back in the car. I cannot wait and I believe that I will be soon as quick as I was before the accident. I am taking the test and race also as a preparation for the 24 Hours Le Mans. I should have better idea after a race in the Ferrari 430 how I will behind the wheel of more powerful Aston Martin DBR9.
HOLY CRAP! I'm glade Enge is okay... and I certainly never expected to see him back so soon.
