Tokico vs KYB and Koni? part 2

ChrisDP 08-16-2005 11:18 AM

I think what ratt_finkel's getting as is that for the rear of a Stock-class 2.5RS, I think Priebe tried various DA Koni valvings and ended up with a spec most similar to an OTS KYB.

Slightly OT, but can someone explain how to properly interpret these shock graphs? An engine dyno plot seems like common sense, yet these shock graphs leave me a bit puzzled. Where should it be higher and where should it be lower? How's that translate into the real world?

Back OT. I'm considering the D-Specs (or OEM units) when my OEM struts wear out. I want to maintain stock ride characteristics with a bit of adjustability for autox use. I don't like the idea of inserts, but I could be swayed.

You want good low speed characteristics but not a lot of high speed damping. Low speed == turning while high speed == bump handling.

The D-specs have good rebound curve on full stiff, unfortunately everything else sucks about them, including the fact that changing the dampening changes both rebound and compression. Basically, by upping compression while upping rebound, you fix the car at one point of the turn while breaking it at another point.

For all you STi owners, I'm trying to work with Koni about fitting an insert into the Sti housing. The holes are already drilled and the housing is already good to go. Hopefully all you will need to do is undo the bottom 14mm, hammer the gold dust seal off, insert and put in a bolt w/o actually destroying anything :)

I've got the Sti housings all measured, and we'll see on fitment as soon as I get the engineering drawings from Koni :)

OK that makes sense :) Glad to hear KYB is doing a good job w/ the STi struts!

Tom- I think a bolt in insert for the STi struts would sell well. Instead of forking over $ for new struts when the old ones wear out, put an insert in.
Add to it that your getting adj damping and that the damping your getting can mimic slightly below oe levels to above oe levels (throughout the range), makes it even that more attractive :D

Anyone have a shock dyno for the AGX?

For what car? They use different valving for different cars.

Did we ever determine if the Tokico graph was for the WRX or just a "generic" plot?

The AGX for the WRX would be nice as well :)

the adjustment on one of my kyb agx's just failed. yay.

Got my Koni inserts yesteday w/ the new 04+ specific rears :) Waiting for my free wagon struts a fellow member so generously donated :D

Holy cow, this is what I have been waiting to hear! Keep us posted!! I woud love to have koni valving on my STi. If you haven't already told them, there has to be a big market for these among '04-'06 STi owners who are stuck with clunking struts and very few options (none for '05-'06) to replace them short of coilovers.

Cheers,

Jeff

Tom any chance you could rehost the dyno's?
Tokico actually makes the stock shocks on my rx8. :)
as well as mazdaspeed adjustable struts
