What famous motorsports drivers have you met?

Ok, I got this idea from the "off-topic" forum but wanted it in a different way.
What famous motorsport driver/riders have you met?
(met= talked with in a conversation)
Any type of motorsport? Rally, F1, MotoGP, other...
Describe their personality, fun factor, coolness, etc...
(BTW, Subie Gal doesn't count...but she's cool anyhow:))
John Felstead, you've got to have some....:)
I'll start:
Bunch of the ProRally guys of old fame:
Carl Merill (RIP)
Sprongls
worked with Tony Chavez
Buffum
Of motorcycle fame: (all at Anderstorp Raceway, Sweden in late 80's)
Eddie Lawson= very nice, calm, talked about so.calif
Wayne Gardner= short talk..liked the track
Wayne Rainey= very cool, laid back
Kevin Schwantz= funny! typical texan, been so my hometown alot
Randy Mamola= silly guy, goofing off, (on Cagiva) coolness=10
Kenny Roberts Sr.= team owner yamaha, confident, nice guy..
Old guy:
Bobby Rahal= talked on the plane, just got the boot from F1, nice guy, excited about Indy 500 coming up
Just some interesting stuff...Would like to meet some F1 and WRC guys...Tommi Makinen would be my favorite...even solberg would be cool!
Play on,
Davis

Very few if you don't count NASIOCers...the late Mark Lovell :( and NASCAR old-timer, now analyst, Buddy Baker.
My next door neighbor ran a USAC dirt track team back in the 1950s, but he's not a driver so doesn't count.

Working a corner of the Houston GP I met plenty of drivers right after they would stuff their car in the wall or blow something up, they were never in a good mood after that.
Jimmy Vasser - nosed the tire barrier at not that great a speed but broke some front suspension, seemed pretty cool, if a little pissed at himself. Gave him some of my bottled water.
Willy T. Ribbs - car blew up (Trans-Am) and hot parts flew by my face when the rods that blew out of the oilpan bounced off the pavement and towards me (I was waving yellow at this point, I'm fast).
Adrian Fernandez - actually met him in the paddock, got a signed helmet visor from him, really cool guy.
Paul Gentilozzi - I threw a blue flag at him at the end of a practice session, later on in the paddock he recognized me and asked why I did that, I said there was little chance of doing that all weekend, so I took the oppurtunity. Got a good laugh out of him.

David Hobbs spoke at our local SCCA region banquet on Saturday along with Peter Cunningham. Our banquet was held at RTR (Real Time Racing). Too bad I missed it. :(
I've met Lovell and Higgins as well. Pat Richard, Frank Sprongl, few other rally guys.
Rahal is the only non-rally guy.

gods and mere drivers

#1) Ricky Craven, signing autographs at his snowmobile dealership in Maine. Another ME boy makes good.
#2) Nicky Grist, who handed me my route book at the ceremonial start at Rim of the World ProRally this year. He took one look at our car number (#912) and said loudly into the microphone, "Huh. These guys must have done something bad to somebody to get such a great starting number!" Wiseass...(I also thought, "He will pay, later!" See #8, below)
#3) Rhys Millen, who gave me a memorable ride in factory supported Evo on Maine Forest Rally 2001 press stage! Fast, rough, and smooth all at once.
#4) Noel Lawler, notorious Irish leadfoot on factory Hyundai press stage ride at MFR 01. Same as Millen above, except for the smooth part. Lawler had already wrecked 3 cars by that point in the season. We smacked a huge rock and went up on 2 wheels for what seemed like forever....
#5) Genuine Rally Legend John Buffum, at numerous rallies round North Amerrica. EVer gracious, engaging (even makes eye contact at time controls!) and always always always fast--even when driving the course opening SUV!!
#6) The late Mark Lovell, what a gentleman despite extremely heavy right foot.
#7) Sam Posey, sports car racer who gave me a ride on Lime Rock back roads in a friend's Firebird 400...I think I nearly stained the seat.
#8) Co-driving for Colin McRae the year he won Safari Rally in the new Ford Focus WRC. Everyone thinks it was Nicky Grist, but they're mistaken. (see #2 above)
#9) Doing headstands on rear wing of M Schumacher's F1 Ferrari during hot practice laps at Monaco. Then we went to the Ferrari pleasure yacht afterwards and things got kind of hazy from there.....after this, my Mom made me stop and now I'm just doing local rallies here in North America.

I've "met" quiet a few, though the only ones I've had a dialog with would be David Higgins and Mark Lovell. Higgins at the last Wild West when he was spectating (very funny guy), and Lovell at the 2001 Wild West after his car broke at the spectator point.

I totally forgot to add Tim O'Neil to list of Famous Pilotes I've Crossed Paths With.
Partway thru a driving course at his school, he's been spanking my rally RS round and round these awesome wiggly little roads. Tim looks over at me, grinning like a cat that just ate a big fat bird..."nice car, good power, handles great, very forgiving. Don't change a thing."
"Now YOU...you got potential, but first we gotta beat some bad habits outa ya!"
What a diplomat. What a teacher. Da Man in my book.

These are all good names guys. Its fun to see who has crossed our paths.
Wish list for me:

Tommi Makinen
Juan or M.Schuy
Ayrton Senna would've been the ultimate prize. I only wish it was possible.

I've met mostly F1 guys, thanks to covering the USGP the first year it returned to Indy:

talked to Irvine long enough to figure out he was an arse
Emmo Fittipaldi
Also:
D. Franchitti
Paul Tracy, both from spending a weekend on the Kool Green pit crew a few years back.

A bunch more I don't remember offhand. I think smelling all the rubber and nitro at a young age is what made me the car nut I am.

A bunch more I don't remember offhand. I think smelling all the rubber and nitro at a young age is what made me the car nut I am.
SubieGal,
You met Ivan? i loved him when he raced Baja.

Mark Lovell & Ramana Lagaman - at the Atl auto show earlier this year. they were really cool. There weren't very many people around when they first came out and and Lovell noticed my subaru key fob hanging from my pocket - asked what I drove, then gave me and my son autographed hats, posters and calendars. Lovell really was great with my 9yr old son; started talking to him about video games GT3, Colin McCrae
Most of the IMSA/ALMS drivers this year (including Danica Patrick ) They had a huge meet-n-greet this year at the Grand Prix of Atl. - so it was really just shuffle along, say a few words and get there autograph. did I mention Danica Patrick?
Jim Fitzgerald - many people may not remember him, but IMO he was THE man in IMSA GT racing in the 70's and 80's (even though he was already >60 yrs old). I did corner work for a few drivers schools at Road Atl in the 80's. He taught classes and was the main guy on the radio from the tower. One year I got to ride with him in a nearly-race-prepared BMW 6 series - it scared the living shee-ite out of me. He was the man, knowledgeable and personable. Unfortunately, he died in a race at St. Petersburg in 1987.
Bill Elliot, Kyle Petty, Adam Petty, Todd Bodine, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and a few other NASCAR drivers.

Guy Colsoul ~ 1982 Himalayan Rally - Opel Ascona. Now he's a team owner in the PCWRC and running Mitsus.
Kenjiro Shinozuka ~ 1988 Himalayan Rally - Mitsubishi Galant VR4. He now competes in Raids such as Paris Dakar and won that event in 1997.

I guy who lives down the street from me grew up with Juan Montoya, and not only have I met him on numerous occaisions, I have actually been on the same track as him (Shifter Carts). NO matter what is written or said about the F1 drivers being unapproachable is not the way he really is. He is actually really cool.

Ramana Lageman

They signed my shirt and poster. I've met all the drivers that passed through stage 8 in the 2002 Bemidji pro-rally on the second day :D. (I started the stage) Some gave us candy! That might have been Subie Gal!

I have a picture of me sitting in Mario Andretti's 1973 Ferrari F1 car while it was still being built at the factory. I sat in it before he did :D I had him sign the picture about 20 years ago, I'd love to know where I put it...
I met Paul Newman before I knew he was a movie star, I was hanging out in the pits at Watkins Glenn during some Datsun testing days.
I grew up near Watkins Glenn in the late 70's / early 80's..met tons of racers from different series back when it didn't seem like such a big deal.
Met quite a few motorcycle racers (and champions) when I was on the crew of an AMA 600 team. Even took a leak standing next to John Kocinski in the bathroom at Laguna Seca

Damn, beat me to the punch, Ray! ;)
Galati drove my sister's WRX wagon for a couple laps around Summit Point with me riding shotgun at the 2002 Audi Owner's Club national event. We didn't talk a whole lot - mentioned it was my sister's car, which he got a kick out of, and that the tires (RE92s) were horrible, which he discovered for himself in turns 6 and 7 as the car plowed hopelessly. He kinda chuckled at that. :)
That was my sole brush with automotive fame. Oh, actually, I've also met Doug Hayashi (of www.nsxfiles.com fame). :)

Whoever won Le Mans in '84 (I'm getting old :( )
Whole bunch of British club racing champions in the '80s - some of whom went on to bigger and better things.

Old guys:
Brian Redmund- GREAT racing stories
Buzz Marcus- Wealth of knowledge
Newer guys:
JPM- Kind of a jerk
Christian Fittipaldi- Karted with him
Tony Kanaan- Did amazing stuff with a kart I have never seen
Roberto Moreno- Came over to ME after I beat him in a rental kart (my 15 minutes of racing fame so far).
Helio Castroneves- Nice guy
Ryan Hunter-Rey- Only met very briefly
Boris Said- Sebring 12 hour race last year his car died next to where I hang out. Someone from my camp gave him a beer and he sat on his helmet drinking it waiting for his crew to pick him up...cool.
Jamie Hacking- Super nice, friendly, down to earth guy.

As a news photographer I've got to interview quite a few racers over the years. I'm the only one where I work who wants to shoot racing.
JP Montoya and his then girlfriend, now, wife Connie were very, very, funny.
Had to listen to Jimmy Vasser go on and on and on about his getting "fired" by Chip Ganassi.
I've been to John Force's house.
Michael Andretti and dad Mario in Long Beach joking about who crashes with more style.
Shot a younger Mario Andretti and his Alfo Romeo teamate Bruno Giacomelli
at a F1 race in Long Beach in 1981.
Met Greg Moore just before he was killed in Fontana in '99. That day sucked.
Shot a pic of Paul Tracy throwing a helmet that bounced and hit me. When he calmed down he apologized and showed me cool stuff inside the trailer.
Have this cool pic of Dario Franchitti reclining on his car on the starting grid at Long Beach. His wife called and asked me for a print - I sent two so he could sign one for me. My wife almost had kittens when she found out Ashley Judd called our house.
Talked to Dan Gurney for a while at a concours - that's a "fancy" car show. ;-)
I have a few odd parts from a Mark Martin car from a few seasons ago.
Met Dale Earnhardt and son Jr., but didn't really get to chat.
Jimmy Johnson
Tony Kanaan
Adrian Fernandez
Kenny Bernstein
Sterling Marlin

I have met pretty much all the current WRC drivers/codrivers in various scenarious, the most fun is at the after rally parties where they let their hair down. This years Rally GB party was great fun with Petter getting up on stage with 2 pro dancers doing his stuff. I wont say what Tommy was doing but it involved alchohol and was Hilareous. Seb Loeb got chucked off the stage by the bouncers when he tried to get up there with the girls. Definately the best Party of the year.
I met Mark Higgins at Donington race track when he was demo driving a Focus WRC and i was driving my westfield, i had a chat with him about SCCA Pro Rally, shortly after he signed to drive in the USA, at the time he hadnt considered the USA so it may be my fault David and Mark came over, who knows? :o
The most fun i have had with a WRC driver is when i spent the week at this years Cyprus Rally with Pentti Airikkala, winner of the 89 RAC rally and multiple British and Finish rally champion. It was hilareous, the stories he told had me in stitches. It was pretty cool stuff walking on stage to have people recognise him and listen to him tell them stories about his rallies, i wish the current drivers got to have the fun he did, but its unlikely in these PC times we live. I met up with Pentti again in Finland and spent the day with him and the the managers of Hirvonen and Latvala, that was an interesting day getting to see quite what level of backing these up and coming Finish drivers get.
Some of the more interesting people i have met have been the people behind the scenes, i shared a bus ride with Richard Burns PA in Monte Carlo last year, i had met claire previously on Rally GB when Jamie met Richard, and she remembered me and Jamie, so it was nice to have a proper chat when she wasnt running around on event. I have a chat with Penny Mallory most events, Penny knows my pal Alister well from when she rallied in the UK. It's always good to chat with the gravel crews during the events too, as you pick up some good info about how things are going.
I have met most of the mid 90's F1 drivers too, I had a kart race against quite a few of them. Johnny Herbert was the funiest by far, Damon Hill was very cool, I kicked DC's arse big style, he didnt shake my hand.
The older generation F1 drivers that stand out are meeting Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss, also meeting Ken Tyrell was great.
3 time winner of the Nurburgring 24hr race, Sabine Schmitz serves me my beer and food when i visit the Nurburgring, she is very funny. Phil Bennet, current BTTC driver used to come to trackdays i did and we have chatted quite a lot.
Who would i have liked to meet but who are no longer with us? Too many to list, Denny Hulme would have been great, he was a hell of an amazing sports car driver, i love the Can AM, 60's-70's sports cars in particular, they were sheer grunt mobiles driven by very brave and tallented drivers.

I grew up in Southern California so I have met or seen quite a few drivers at Riverside, Laguna Seca, and Sears Point. Bruce McLaren was a passenger in my dad's MG TC during a parade lap at Riverside.
Access to drivers was pretty easy back in the day.
My highlight was "stalking" Senna through the streets of Montreal in 1993. He was with his entourage and they had stopped for an ice cream cone. When they left the store, I shadowed them and coordinated my movements so that when they crossed the street they walked right up to me. I simply stuck my hand out and said "Good luck" and Ayrton responded by shaking my hand and saying "Thank you". That was good for me:)

I've only met Speed Challenge guys when they showed up at Carlisle this year to help with our mini road course. I actually made a fool of myself when I saw PD Cunningham driving around the course and I thought out loud "It's PD CUNNINGHAM!" :)
PD Cunningham
Wil Turner
Zac Mazzotta
Dean Sapp
Neal Sapp
Roger Foo - met at an HPDE event at VIR last year.

This thread is one of the best all time thread in nasioc! Very cool to see what and where everyone has been.
I too have been almost ran over by Mario and many others but at Rd Amer.
Not so much met but have worked directly on some pretty cool shtuff.
Spoke on the phone briefly to Paul Morgan (Ilmor). Also have a complete bank of a v-10 exhaust from the Hakinen era cars.
Hendrick Motorsports; met and worked with Randy Dorton and also had #24's car in our shop for some exhaust work.
Penske Racing South; worked with the main engine team including restrictor and non restricted engine devel at the shop in NC and DiamlerChrysler facilities in Detriot. Also had the
#12 car in our shops for same reason.
Had Doug Chandlers and Chris Carr's factory VR bikes in our shop for exh work.
Sponsored the AMA 250gp team (SW motorsports) that Colin Edwards raced for. Have a front carbon brake rotor from Colin's tz250 at the time.
For a few years did all of Yamaha's factory snowcross engine and exh devel. This included considerable field testing. Tough work someone has to do:p
their is more but memory...
