Which 6spd shift knob? part 1

Leonardo 08-10-2004 08:43 AM

Which 6spd shift knob?
Well, I'm on the market for one and I'm in between the 05 STi, Prodrive, and the STi V-Limited Ti.

Opinions?
Mumbles 08-10-2004 08:49 AM

just got my Ti, very nice.. :)
Hank3 08-10-2004 08:54 AM

05' STi is the nicest one I've seen so far :)

Leonardo 08-10-2004 09:02 AM

Yeah, I'm leaning to the 05 STi one
volkl23 08-10-2004 09:04 AM

I really like the 05 STi shiftknob as well! Anyone find a good price?
Hank3 08-10-2004 09:38 AM

According to another member, the tops to the 04' and 05' STi knobs are interchangeable. The top piece supposedly goes for ~$5 - $10.

Leonardo 08-10-2004 09:40 AM

Hmm, interesting!

Can anyone (Brian, Peaty) get a part number?

Leo
North Ursalia 08-10-2004 10:40 AM

You want the part number for the knob? 35022FE030. I'll have my vendor alter-ego sell them on the website if there is any interest.

Oh, BTW... the tops do not come seperate from the whole knob if that's what you're after Leo ;).
the 05 top is for girls
yeah I just picked up a cheap '04 knob for my '05; not digging that huge shift pattern.

Do you have a link to the V-limited knob? couldn't find anything on it.
volkl23 08-10-2004 02:49 PM

Wait, so the 05 and 04 shift pattern cap is not interchangeable? The picture of Hank3 seems pretty convincing.
Hank3 08-10-2004 03:04 PM

They're probably interchangeable but Subaru doesn't sell the piece separately maybe?
North Ursalia 08-10-2004 03:04 PM

If you directed that towards me, I didn't say they weren't interchangeable ;). I said you could not just buy the caps from Subaru- you have to buy the whole shift knob :).

As far as I'm aware, the 6 speed knob will fit a 5 speed without issue.

Any 5MT knob, so whenever somebody else tries to put it into "reverse," it stalls.
05' STi is the nicest one I've seen so far :)
Then there is the post about the attempted carjacking of an STi. The jacker couldn't get the car in reverse to back out of a parking spot, gave up, and ran off. For this reason, the 04 knob is more desirable since it may prevent uneducated drivers from stealing the car, at least if it is parked in such a way.
Leonardo 08-12-2004 12:05 AM

Anyone got pics of the Prodrive?

Which looks hotter, all silver or the silver with the blue ring on top?
Hank3 08-12-2004 12:22 AM

I say the black one, but this one was posted just recently:

Leonardo 08-12-2004 09:19 AM

Has anyone compared the Ti and the Prodrive?

From that pic, looks like the Prodrive is huge compared to the Ti.
grknss 08-12-2004 10:48 AM

I have to say I am diggin the painted shift pattern! nice job
Has anyone compared the Ti and the Prodrive?

I have the round Ti knob and it's roughly the same size as stock - just a whole lot heavier. From the pic I would say the Prodrive one is much larger.
austinpike 08-12-2004 11:02 PM
I have the round Ti knob and it's roughly the same size as stock
I would say it is noticeably smaller than stock. Maybe the size of the stock one without the leather wrapping - not a lot, really, but it definitely "feels" smaller.
majmun 08-13-2004 01:35 AM

If I had a digital camera (I know I live in the stone age), I'd post a picture comparing the two. The stock '04 knob is maybe an 1/8'' larger in diameter than the Ti knob (hence the "roughly"). The stocker is not perfectly round either. This, along with the differing textures of leather v. Ti, might make it feel larger than it really is. The point I was trying to make was that the Prodrive knob is noticeably larger than stock. :)

BTW, any luck selling your tires?

Silver/Blue = teh hawtn3ss!!!

I've seen the silver/blue Prodrive and I'm waiting on mine to come in. The black is sweet too if UR into that but I like the silver/blue.
Leonardo 08-13-2004 08:40 AM

So, I'm between the Ti and the Prodrive!
Hank3 08-13-2004 08:58 AM

Come on Leo, it's been a week almost...pick one already. The suspense is killing me
austinpike 08-13-2004 10:58 AM

> If I had a digital camera
I do, just too lazy to snap a few pics :p
I am waiting on one of those aluminum Solberg knobs (bought from a guy in Canada) - maybe once that shows up I will post comparison pics of all 3. I am hoping the aluminum is a bit larger than the Ti.

> The point I was trying to make was that the Prodrive knob is noticeably larger than stock.
true, true.

> BTW, any luck selling your tires?
as above, I need to dig out the camera and post them.
austinpike 08-13-2004 07:28 PM

Pics of Titanium, stock '04, and Canadian SE aluminum for size comparison. They all have a pretty different feel to them imho. Personally I really like the aluminum one. The Ti is up for sale. 6MT Titanium shift knob (spherical)

Hank3 08-13-2004 07:32 PM

Nice comparison pics - thanks for sharing :)
hph 08-13-2004 08:40 PM

I have the ProDrive knob, and it's almost exactly the same size as the stock one (the '05 version) - 50mm vs 49mm in diameter and the same height. The ProDrive knob, however, is more spherical, like the Ti one in the picture above with a smaller base.

It's heavier than the stock leather knob, and shifting feels better. But I wonder about the weight. The gear shift wobbles around more (on rough pavement, say) with the extra weight. And the owner's manual, and numerous gurus, say not to rest your hand on the knob as the weight can damage the synchros. Is the extra weight of the knob an issue in this regard? HPH
volkl23 08-14-2004 12:26 AM

Even though it may be heavier, it shouldn't be heavy enough to damage the synchros. A resting hand (I weighed it on a digital meter) can be anywhere from 1.5-2.5 lbs. By comparison, the shiftknob only weights a few ounces.
Tobey 10-10-2004 01:13 PM

bump for more pics!
scooby24 10-13-2004 02:12 PM

Anyone wanna trade me my 6spd Ti Knob for their '05 stocker? I'll do a straight swap even though this knob is 130 from subaru.

Stu I'm stealing your pic cuz I'm lazy and don't wanna take a picture myself hope you don't mind ;)
