WRC-Rally Australia
Well guys, it's here! The rally we've all been waiting for :) RB has a pretty good starting spot in 12th, right ahead of Carlos and Colin. I have butterflies in my stomach right now, I can't imagine how the 6 drivers who are still eligable for the title must feel!!!
This is going to be a good one.
GO TEAM SUBARU!!!
BTW, Subie Gal or Opie, could you make this a "Sticky", at least until next week sometime? Thanks.

No more nonsense at the end of legs
Ford's Carlos Sainz set the fastest time of the first stage of Telstra Rally Australia, but it was teammate Colin McRae who set the agenda for the rest of the first leg in the forests around Mundaring to the east of Perth. Sainz kicked his rally off with a blistering 1 minute 30.5 second blast around the 2.2km Langley Park Superstage. Behind him there were another 19 drivers within two seconds of his time.
However, it was running order not fastest times that were at the forefront of the drivers' minds tonight. The leading drivers believe that the first cars to run on Western Australia's infamous gravel roads are disadvantaged by the 'ball- bearing' gravel that loosely sits on the surface. The first cars have to deal with a thicker coating of the highly slippery stones, but as each car passes, more stones are swept from the road, creating a better surface for the following cars.
In the past, the leading drivers would deliberately slow down to secure a later starting time and better road conditions. This year, the organisers re- introduced the starting order system that allows the FIA Priority 1 drivers (14 in this event) to select their starting position according to their current standing in the FIA World Rally Championship.
Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen are equal first on 40 points, but McRae is ahead on a count back and got first choice. No-one was surprised when he chose to be the 14th car to start tomorrow's leg in Mundaring. Mitsubishi driver Makinen chose 13th, Subaru driver Richard Burns chose 12th, Carlos Sainz chose 11th, and the first of the four Peugeot drivers, Harri Rovanpera, chose 10th. However when it came to the next Peugeot driver on points, Gilles Panizzi, he chose 7th and Didier Auriol chose 8th, leaving the way clear for last year's Telstra Rally Australia winner Marcus Gronholm to run in 9th position.
With four cars in the event, Peugeot was able to exploit a tactical opportunity and ensure that both the drivers they have nominated to score manufacturers' points will have the best possible position on the road. Manufacturers may only nominate two drivers to score points. The next six cars counting down were Francois Delecour (Ford), Petter Solberg (Subaru), Freddy Loix (Mitsubishi), Toshihiro Arai (Subaru), Alister McRae (Hyundai) and Kenneth Eriksson (Hyundai).
Current Australian rally champion Possum Bourne has arguably the second-best position on the road, as the 15th car. Bourne regularly finishes in the top 10 at Telstra Rally Australia and is more than capable of keeping the pressure on the international drivers.
Tomorrow the rally heads into the forests around Mundaring where the cars will contest eight special stages before returning to Langley Park for another crow- pleasing performance on the Superstage. From 9am - 6pm ,Mundaring Town Centre will become a massive service park for the 73 cars.

Ok, I cant handle the stress anymore. Would Burns just hurry up and win the championship for Subaru/Prodrive. :)
I like the idea of choosing road positions. The only downside is that I guess the top guys can't baby their cars on day one anymore. Thats a downside for the racers...not the fans.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BURNS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Poooor Colin
Just off from the Scooby net bbs
According to BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/in_depth/2001/world_rally_2001/newsid_1633000/1633585.stm) Colin McRae has missed the draw for starting positions for tomorrow (Saturday) and will have to run first.
Not sure what happened exactly - presumably he just didn't turn up when they were deciding tomorrows positions.
Should put Burnsie in a good position!
Didn't smirk at all when I read this!!
The world championship aspirations of Colin McRae may have been dealt a serious blow tonight after the Ford driver failed to arrive to select his starting order position on time. According to the rules of the event, he forfeited his opportunity to choose and was relegated to first on the road, a position from where it is much more difficult to set fastest times. The Ford team has protested, however the result may not be known until the early hours of Saturday morning.
This is incredibly serious for Colin. We will know in just a few hours whether he has just blown his chances in the 2001 Championship.
He is looking at finishing outside the points, it's that serious!

actually Pat, that's the paint scheme they use on all factory backed, non-WRC team cars now, including USA, Canada, and Asian-Pacific, which is what that car is, since its Possum Bourne driving. subaru has him run the WRC events in Australia and his native New Zealand.
McRae does appear to be quite screwed. i just hope solberg can edge out makinen, think of the bragging rights for next year  burns is doing a great job and is in an excellent position. poor sainz though, he was so quick until he stopped to smell the trees :(

"Late in the evening Ford withdrew any query or protest concerning the seeding of McRae at the head of the field for leg 2, on the basis that it was "in the best interests of the sport." It is thought that both Subaru and Peugeot were ready to "counter protest" if he was reinstated or given a choice.
Had Ford persisted the whole matter could have ended up at the FIA for judgement and that would have done no-one any good.
McRae has a mountain - or rather a big pile of gravel - to climb tomorrow. He will be fortunate to salvage many points unless a high rate of attrition depletes the ranks of the front runners.
If a similar method of deciding seeding is adopted on other gravel rallies in the future this will doubtless be a salutory lesson to all."
He is done. McRae starts first. I cant help but feel bad for him. It looks great for Burns tho. McRae's start position will kill him on day 2 and Makinen and Sainz are "off the back".

McRae needs a miracle now to score any points. He would have become world champion in Aus if he won the event. Based on what i saw on TV tonight Burns has this one in the bag unless he loses concentration. His engine cut 3 times on one stage yet he was still 3rd quickest. He is pacing himself by the looks of it. (still near the limit but not taking risks)
Makinen, forget him, he is in serious pain on the stages and isnt driving flat out. It has been revealed he has a cracked vertibae too. He is saying the EVO is heavy and unweildy.
I expect Burns and Petter to be right up front on Leg 2, Petter did a great job considering his start position for leg1, he looked really smooth and controlled.
The pugs are flying, really quick. I still think the Impreza is a better car all round though.
Poor Colin, what a screwup. He is going to look spectacular. I hope he doesnt have a big crash because he will have to really push hard now.

That's not Possum Bourne in that pic. He is still driving last year's car. That car in the pic (#30) is being driven by Achim Mortl and Stefan Eichorner. Just FYI. :)

Delecour went out apparently in a big crash. I haven't heard/read anything about what caused the crash, but he was probably pushing very hard in frustration of the team orders. I think they're both okay now. Delecour has been cleared by doctors and his co-driver Grataloup is described as "stable and satisfactory".
Burns is now 17seconds behind Gronholm as of the end of SS14. Com'on Burns! Gotta get a move on it :D And whoever said Colin McRae won't score any points may have to eat their words later. He's in 5th and has a 1-minute cushion between him and our man Petter running 6th.

Kudos again to Colin McRae for holding on to 5th given the conditions... I imagine the rain helped him out a little.
| johnfelstead | 11-03-2001 06:41 PM |
Looks like Colin got his mini Miracle.
The longest stage on the rally was the one cancelled due to Delecours crash. He then had rain which made conditions more even. (rain in November, summer! in perth is pretty rare.)
He also got away with a real close one, within an inch of going off perminantly, kinking the underside of the shell badly but losing no time.
Colin has driven a stormer, brilliant drive!
Delecours crash was horendous. Just watched it on TV from the onborad camera. They were in top gear, 115MPH or so and lost the rear which hit on delecours side first but that threw the car sideways and they hit a big tree side on at over 100MPH bang on the co-drivers door. It felled the tree which lay on top of the car!
It's absolutely amazing the consequencies were not more serious. Thank goodness for that. Modern WRC cars are amazing pieces of kit.
Richard was a biy toss on the first stage of today, he said so himself. After that he was OK but had a few problems with the car. One stage he couldnt change down below 4th gear and then he lost his gear display completely so wasnt sure what gear he was in.
Gronholme has driven perfectly, he had the front steering changed this morning as that was a bit iffy day one, he says thats transformed the car and it feels perfect now. His lines are awesome, very precise. He should win now unless something freeky happens.
Makinen isnt hurting as much today so is able to push a bit harder, from the onboard shots he seriously hates the new car, it's fun as he slaggs it off mid corner.
Petter is driving a good rally but should push just a little harder, Burns needs him in front of Makinen ideally.
This rally is fabulous, at last we are seeing flat out driving through the whole event and non of the rediculous jockying for position at the end of the legs. This is the way it should be. :D

If things stay as they are the championship will look like this.
McRae 42
Makinen 41
Burns 40
Sainz 33
Rovanpera 30
So it would still be posible for any of the top 4 to be champion.
If Burns, McRae or Makinen were to win on the NetworkQ they would be champion irespective of the other placings. We desperately need the Peugeot's to stay in the running to give richard a guaranteed shot at the title, something he has never had before.
Excited yet Jamie? :D:lol:

It's all over, and the unofficial results did indeed stay the same as what John posted earlier.
What a rally! So it's simple now. Burns wins the RAC, he wins the title. Go Subaru!
Pity fory Sainz, and one could only wonder just how different it would have been had McRae not have been "penalised", but I'm not complaining at the moment. ;)
And hats off to Peugeot for a almost total domination of the rally. Marcus was simply un-catchable I think.
Congrats to RB and the SWRT! Thank you, this is what we needed. Best of luck at the RAC.
What a rally! So it's simple now. Burns wins the RAC, he wins the title. Go Subaru!
Pity fory Sainz, and one could only wonder just how different it would have been had McRae not have been "penalised", but I'm not complaining at the moment. ;)

Wow! That was an awesome one, can't wait for the season finale... what a nailbiter!
My money is on Burns... can he make it 4 in a row on home turf? You betcha!

"...However, Francois Delecour was not so lucky. On Stage 13, he crashed his Ford Focus and his co-driver Daniel Grataloup was seriously injured. Daniel took the full impact, as his side of the car hit a tree, snapping it in half. The stage was still running and Colin McRae and Nicky Grist were the first on the scene. McRae used the 'SOS' sign to warn the next car to stop, Kenneth Eriksson in his Hyundai. The Ford pair and the Hyundai pair helped Daniel out of the car until the medics arrived. It has been confirmed that Daniel has a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken shoulder. The Stage was then cancelled. "
Ouch! Nice to hear though that McRae and Eriksson actually helped out. Any one have anything new on Daniel Grataloup? How's he doing?
Ford Martini co-driver Daniel Grataloup will undergo further assessment by surgeons today at Perth's St John of God Murdoch Hospital following yesterday's accident in which he cracked three ribs, his right collar bone, his right shoulder blade and suffered a collapsed lung.
Grataloup, injured when the Ford Focus RS World Rally Car crewed by himself and driver François Delecour went off the road and hit a tree in the Wellington Dam stage yesterday morning, will be examined by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and a consultant surgeon. He will undergo X-ray examination this morning and checks to his lung injury this afternoon.
The 41-year-old Frenchman is progressing well this morning although he feels drowsy after pain relief during the night to ease the discomfort from his injuries. It is expected he will remain in hospital for the next couple of days.
What are the exact dates of the RAC???
| lark6 | 11-05-2001 08:47 PM |
I missed the RAC by two weeks last year. I hope I get to see it someday. Lucky ducks.
Non sequitur: Is it me or was Tommi Makinen separated at birth from Kelsey Grammer*?

*Actor/comedian who played psychologist Frasier Crane on NBC TV's "Cheers" and "Frasier" and voices the villainous kid show sidekick Sideshow Bob on FOX TV's "The Simpsons" - not sure if you've seen them, John.

oh come on John, you always seem to have the inside scoop on everything. you really expect us to believe that the FIA hasn't already told you how its going to turn out
my two pence: colin if he can keep it on the road, richard if he can't, tommi if they switch back to the old car

oh, its just you always seem to have inside info before anyone else on the board (team changes and such) so i just figured you could use your ESP or FIA informant to tell us who's going to win, since you seem to have all the other info. it was just a joke ;)

Tommi and Carlos will only win if Colin and Richard dont finish.
I am gonna upset Jamie now by saying i think Colin will win. Sorry Jamie, dont beet me up OK!
Richard is very, very fast in Great Britain but Colin is that extra second quicker when the chips are really down.
The only chance i think Richard has is if we have heavy fog. In those conditions Richard is unbelievable, faster by a big margin over anyone else. I hear he eats plenty of carrotts. :D:lol:
I would love to see Richard win and would be chuffed to bits for him but my deap down support is for Colin. I have followed him since he started out in a Vauxhall Nova. Watched him win his first national then international rally and i was stood about 30 feet away from him when he won the RAC in 95 and collected his World championship in Chester at the racecourse. The atmosphere was incredible. I have seen Colin go through some crap times too. I was the guy who forced his door open after his monumental crash on the RAC in 99.
Colin is the guy who put british rallying on the map again, i have watched him do amazing things since he was a kid. The most amazing thing i have ever seen on a special stage was colin in 1995 when he had something like 2 minutes to make up on Carlos. I was stood right on the top of sweet lamb. I know that stage very well as thats where we go testing a lot. I cant describe what i saw but the car was absolutely on the limit and mm perfect the whole section i could see. It was just mindblowing.
In a straight fight, no fog, no sheet ice Colin will take it. *runs and hides from Jamie*

Jeez John, after that, I think you even have me rooting for McRae :)
In all seriousness, as bad as I want Burns to win(simply because of Subaru), I don't think anyone would absolutely hate it if Colin won. I mean, I would, but only because Richard didn't win. I remember driving 2.5 hours to buy the Autosport issue(closest place that had it) of the 95 RAC( the one with Derick and Colin on the cover). Still have it on my wall today.
Now then, given your great descriptions of both drivers, lets turn to the cars. I'm sure the drivers have alot to do with it, but in the last, say, 5 or 6 years, the Impreza has won the most there by far. How does the Focus match up to the Impreza this year at the RAC, or are the cars so evenly matched that it really all comes down to Burns vs. McRae?

The cars are too close to say either is better on gravel IMHO. I think the Impreza is a little more agile with its shorter wheelbase but its spliting hairs.
They are both running Pirrelli's which are the best tyres by far on gravell.
This one is down to driver (and reliability), gonna be great! :D

With Schwarz to Hyundai, who takes over @ Skoda?
john/all:
I just read on rally-live.com and rallyrallyrally.com that Armin Schwarz has left Skoda and signed on with Hyundai. It appreas Schwarz and Freddy Loix will run the full campaign with Hyundai while former SWRT member and living legend Juha Kankkunen will contest only the gravel events.
Too bad for poor Skoda (everybody say it together: "Skoda") which looked like it was starting to get its act together. Any speculation on who will join Bruno Thiry and Roman Kresta, or will it be just the two of them?
Ed
edit: I see my question has been answered: it'll be Kenneth Eriksson and Toni Gardemeister. Not sure whether Thiry or Kresta will be part of the team.
