French GP

It's mid-season and F1 returns to Europe after the US GP farce. The Michelin teams might boycott the French GP if the FIA try to shaft them for the Indy mess...

Screw Michelin and the teams on them. They screwed the fans, and everyone at the last event why should they get away with it. There should be fines or other forms of punishment against them. I would find it shocking if they did boycott the race. They are out there to win, each race and the series and 2 DNS in a row isn't good. The major sponsors should be compelled to pull their money if they don't start a second race.
| speedyHAM | 06-26-2005 07:26 PM |
No one should be penalized. It was unsafe for the Michelin teams to run, and against the rules to change things to let them run safely. They (the teams) did the only thing they could. Losing the opportunity to gain points is enough of a punishment in the first place. Come the end of the year the race at Indy may play a factor in the final points. That would be very bad for Michelin teams.

make them all run on Bridgstones. :P

Let's move on, shall we?

I suspect Michelin will not withdraw on its home soil.
| TimStevens | 06-27-2005 11:00 AM |
It's not Michelin who will withdraw, it'll be the teams, because they're the ones who will be getting the punishment this Weds.

I hope they just get fined and have to buy the USGP ticket holders next years tickets and be done with it.
Anyways, top 8:
1. Kimster
2. Freddy
3. Webber
4. Shumi

Haha, no you're right, its not like it used to be. He'll probably DNF, but ever since his first year, when he put that move on Schumi, he's been my favorite. He'll get everything together one of these days...

I started watching racing when JPM was doing so well in CART so I just followed him since then. That move in Brazil was awesome right up till Joss thought it would be agood idea to break test the leader of the race!

Kevin,
You can change your picks. Just make new ones and they over-ride the previous. I did that last time and it was a wash (DC for Webber - 6 points either way.)
I'll pick Wednesday or Thursday!

"The seven Michelin-shod teams which have withdrawn from the United States Grand Prix Renault, McLaren, Williams, Toyota, BAR, Red Bull and Sauber - have been proclaimed guilty of two of five charges of damaging Formula 1 at todays World Motor Sport Council hearing in Paris.
In a press conference shortly after the hearing, FIA president Max Mosley revealed that the squads were guilty of not being in possession of suitable tires and wrongfully refusing to start the race.
(Click here to read the full set of charges).
No official proceedings from the hearing were allowed to reach the press. Mosley also unveiled September 14 as the date the penalties for the squads will be revealed, in an extraordinary meeting of the Council.
"The WMSC decided to adjourn discussion of penalty to an extraordinary meeting, when it will be seen what steps have been taken to compensate the fans," the FIA president stated.
"And also what steps have been taken by the Michelin teams to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. The final decision will then be made after that."
Michelin, however, faces no risk of exclusion from races or the championship, since it is a supplier rather than a competitor.
"The difficulty is the FIA has no relationship with the Michelin tire company, so we are in no position to impose a penalty on Michelin," Mosley admitted.
The immediate consequence of Mosleys pronunciation is the confirmation that the Formula 1 world will finally return to business as usual at this weekends French GP, after two weeks full of political turmoil.
Still, possible race bans after the September 14 meeting are practically certain to be crucial, as the date, following round 16 in Belgium, will likely fall into the thick of the title chase with three races to go afterwards."
I smell a rat.

I'll refrain from posting my opinions on the verdict, but I will say that by delaying the penalty we'll at least get to see a full field for the next 5 or 6 GPs before the teams pull out after receiving their punishment.

Also Michelin announced yesterday that they will pay every fan back that was at the USGP. They will be refunded their ticket price via Michelin.

Why would a final decision come after the Michelin teams "make sure nothing like this ever happens again"? There are two different issues. The teams were found guilty of brining F1 into disrepute at the US GP. That is completely separate from anything that may occur in the future. If the Michelin teams have problems in the future, then they should go to court again. Their penalties shouldn't rest on how the teams perform in the future or on Michelin's future development. That's utterly ridiculous. That's like saying to a person who's just been found guilty of murder (or whatever else), "Okay, well, you've been found guilty of murder, but your sentencing will be in three months. If you don't kill anybody in the next few months, maybe your punishment won't be so bad." What the f'? The FIA, WMSC, FOM...man, somebody needs to clean house. Paul Stoddart is trying his best to do so.

Leaving all this USGP crap aside - I'm very interested to see whether anyone would copy Sato's move in Canada, ie retire and go back into garage, fix up the car, come back out, do a few laps, and gain a few qualifying slots for the next race even though he's not running for points.

P6. Mark Webber
P7. Quick Nick
P8. Jarno Trulli
After about three weeks without a proper race I've sorta lost my marbles and have no idea what I was doing with my picks. But, yeah. Let's hope it's a good race and things are happy. :)

I honestly don't think JPM can consistently threaten KR. So far he hasn't really done it at all. He may have speed, but Kimi's a better racer, and as Gehard Berger found out so many times racing against Senna, being really quick on the occasional lap is not what it's all about.
I just don't see JPM making up a 50% points deficit to KR unless Kimi has a lot of engine or tire failures.
Maybe part of it is I just haven't figured JPM out. I think he's his own worst enemy sometimes, kind of like JV is (although at least JV has a personality).

I really don't want to get into a flame war, but in reality, Michelin failed their teams and the sport by bringing the wrong equipment to the race. They should have known better, but failed. The FIA has no contrat with Michelin and therefore no leverage with them. Their only leverage is with the teams that chose to trust Michelin. The rules are very specific.
My pics for France, of couse, include Michelin runners at the top:
1. Raikkionen
2. Alonso
3. MS
4. JPM
5. Fisi

It is suprising to see several people choosing both BAR Honda's in the points, considering their track record this year.
I hope they get the ship righted and come back with a more competetive package in France.

There's A Place In France Where The F1 Cars Will Dance!

Weather forecast is for a hot, dry Sunday.
May I encourage everyone to share your opinions about the previous GP in the designated thread! It will be nice to just focus on the French GP, for those us looking for a respite.
Also, our group name at the F1 Pick 6 competition is "impreza.net", (an alternate domain name for nasioc.com). If you have never picked there, it's free, it's easy, it's the oldest F1 game on the net (goes back to the '80's prior to the web)!
So here's my picks:

Raikkonen - If Michelin is better than B'Stone @ Magny-Cours this year, then McLaren are likely to be better than Renault
M.Schumacher - But if B'Stone's tire for Ferrari is stout, then Michael could win, or at least podium.
Alonso - Should be on the podium, and may win.
Montoya - The second half of the season will see him faster than Kimi sometimes. And he may win this race, but consistancy is Juan's weakness, and Kimi's strength.
Barrichello - This is a tire war... Hopefully B'Stone is competitive.
Fisichella - If his damned Renault were more reliable, then the driver's championship would be very different right now.
Heidfeld - The strength of the BMW motor is an asset at Magny-Cours
Trulli - Toyota's strong motor, and Magny-Cours' billiard table smooth surface will hide Toyota's weakness of a piss poor chassis.
Theoretically, BAR could easily be in the points, along with Red Bull whose new motor upgrade seemed to help very much on Friday and Saturday at Indy. And of course Sauber could move into the points as well. So very difficult picking the bottom half of the point paying positions these days!

If the tire guru engineers thought it was unsafe..... no one should argue with their decision (If in fact it was a valid safety concern). Not worth the lives of any of the drivers
Now, a refund should be given. And YES I would be majorly pissed if I had spend hundreds of $$ going to Indy, buying plane tickets, renting a car, using vacation time, etc... those expenses will never be refunded :(

Ok, now I feel better about making these picks.
1. Kimi- He had P2 last race, now he's feeling jiggy.
2. Michael- Will be seeing Kimi's tailpipes this race. Will push Kimi even, but not get past(unless its in the pits).
3. Alonso- Will mix it up with K.R. and Herr Schumacher and podium.
4. Webber- BMW puts together a good car for this fine chap.
5. JPM- Following the rest of the pack. Thinking about his hot wife(don't blame him).
6. Fisi- Tough qualifying, but will fight for points position.
7. Ralf- Still somewhat timid.
8. DC- Red Bull for the last point.

Look at all the suckers who put Kimi in front of Monty... :)
<hopes Juan's motor holds together for the weekend>
Oh, did anyone else notice on practice they said Kimi was on a new (and revised) motor and Juan was on an old/used motor? I wish they would publish that stuff somewhere.

Kimi's Motor Goes Kablooey Friday Afternoon

Kimi's motor blew early in the Friday afternoon practice... McLaren will change it... Kimi will lose 10 positions on the starting grid.
Bad news for those of us who picked Kimi to win!
I'm guessing Kimi will qualify fat with fuel... With the short pit-lane here, team strategies can be from 2 stops to 4 stops, (Michael won last year on 4 stops). If Kimi is fat with fuel, he may start from 8th or 9th row. If he qualifies light, he could start on the 5th or 6th row...

I bet he starts from the pit lane. It seems now that its all about damage limitation. Hopefully JPM can get the win from Alonso and Kimi can get in the top 5 or 6 and salvage as many points as he can.
This long life engine rule sucks.

24. Raikkonen McLaren-Mercedes (M) No Time 2
Tempatures were 24C (mid 70s F) ambient, which is much cooler than Sunday's predicted high of 33C (~93F).
Historically, changes in ambient tempatures have strongly impacted handling here. With tomorrow's high predicted to be 27C, qualifying may not be pretty, if folks are 1 lap qualifying on hard compound tires. And Sunday may see some ill-handling cars dropping positions in the middle and end of the race.

I really hope Jordan can get the new car running soon and they can start fighting with other teams besides Minardi. If you look at the above results BAR, Sauber, and Williams were 1 second or less off the new Jordan (who knows about fuel though).

F.Alonso 6
J.Button 10
J.Montoya
N.Heidfeld

Not too shabby a job for the Kimster. Going from 13th to 2nd is pretty respectable. And he managed to get ahead of a certain JPM before he had hydraulic problems(with trans). Alonso was unstoppable. Great for him. In order for McLaren to challenge, Alonso will need to make a few big mistakes(which is possible, but not too likely), or Renault will need to have a few bad motors(not likely either).
It's turning into a decent championship race this season. Even though Alonso is pretty far ahead of his competition, his competition is also not the ones to be put aside. Kimi can run with Alonso, and so can Schumacher(duh!;) ). Definitely one of the more interesting seasons in the past few years.

Not a bad race. I was getting really excited about Sato, but then he tried to pass Trulli. :(
But Button got 4th, and that made it all better.

Look at all you fools who put Montoya in the points.... :(
Man, my guy just can't catch a break this season. Anyway, he should be looking good in Silverstone with the new improved (but hopefully holding together) motor at a horse-power track.
Montoya's blurb, because I'm the pimp:
I was really enjoying this race, and am disappointed to retire. I started to lose the power steering and then the gears which is what happens with a hydraulic failure so there was nothing I could do. We were on the right strategy and the car is simply unbelievable which makes it even harder to retire. I was on a different tyre to Kimi so it took a bit longer to get them warm, but I think that could have paid off towards the end of the race. I was stuck in a lot of traffic, but as soon as I was in free air I was able to close the gap and was really looking forward to being back on the podium. Obviously it means that once again I will have to start my qualifying run early at Silverstone but I'm getting used to it and anything can happen, so I look forward to the British Grand Prix because I'm sure a race win is just around the corner.
It would be pretty cool if we could get Juan's quotes before the McLaren PR people help edit them. :D

I was pulling for Sato too. I was hoping he would be able to pull some super dirt track move to get that move to stick but it looks like he was carrying about mmmmm 45mph too much speed.
Sucks to be Fisichella. He can't get s*** right right now. I feel for him and hope his luck changes soon.
Kimi looks like hes ready to whoop up on some people with his pace. If he and Alonso can start close to each other its on.
