WRX Heated Seats? Need Some Part Numbers!

OK. Since the Canadian WRX comes with heated seats, it could be easily added to the American WRX. I need the part numbers to make it happen though, and I'm sure www.subaruparts.com will have some reasonable prices for them all.

If you know what all is needed for this, or have the part numbers, please respond away.

Thanks,
Jim
wrx182 11-30-2001 02:42 PM

well, i called www.subaruparts.com and they said that they don't have the parts and that you'd have to go to canada for them:rolleyes:

that's odd, since i just recieved my canadian ts roof moldings from them:rolleyes:

anyone have any suggestions?

maybe one of our canadian members could go and find out what parts are needed and put together a group buy?
trboCIVIC&WRX 11-30-2001 02:45 PM

Jim, I thought that I heard Dan (god) say that he has a full list of part numbers now... and that with the PNs, anydealership can order the stuff...

But I could have misunderstood him....
wrx182 11-30-2001 02:48 PM

thanks Yoni...I'll shoot him an email

Jim
lenyx 11-30-2001 03:23 PM

there were tons of threads about this in the past couple months... I know.. cause I contributed to most of them. Do a search. I think the one person that ordered from a Canadian dealership ended up getting an aftermarket kit.
GooseMan 11-30-2001 04:37 PM

I can look up part no.'s for you next time I'm at a dealer, if you guys want.....

Anyone want the phone no. for a Canadian dealership? You can ask them..........

No problem! :D

Re: Heated seats for WRX

To rehash what I posted on this subject a few weeks ago (after a lot of phone calls and research):

The US spec WRX has a different wiring loom than the Canadian spec WRX from the factory in Japan (why? who knows). What this means is that you might be able to get replacement heating elements and switches, but there is no wiring harness in the US WRXs to hook them up.

I ordered what I thought was an OEM seat heater kit from a Subaru dealer in Vancouver - what I got was an aftermarket seat heater kit (SEPAB), and an OEM console switch which didn't match. The connectors are different so that they don't mate. The kit did come with its own switch, though it is a bit inferior IMO to the OEM switch.

My advice would be to check out Katzkin for their Carbotex seat heaters, or some other aftermarket company; or wait and see if SOA comes up with some way to satisfy the US customers.

There was a recent post from someone who went the distance and installed a driver's side heating element. Ok...I'm going to try it from memory... It wasn't as simple as "the Canadian models have it so.." Apparently (here's where my memory may be a bit fuzzy) the wiring harness or such is a bit different so as not to make it an easy install. The heating elements that SOA & SOC use though are both from the same Swedish mfg and they have a website where you can order the elements. The above poster did this and even had pics. I think I have the link saved in my e-mail and will try and repost.

RE: Heated seat kit

I believe that was me; the SEPAB kit is made in Sweden, and fits the seat just fine, but it's wiring connectors are different from the Subaru console switch, so I'm not sure they are the OEM supplier for SOC.

Here's the thread with a pic of the kit before installation:

Re: seat heaters

1 Attachment(s)
and here's a picture of what the OEM switch (on the right) and the SEBAB switch (left) look like in the console. Note that the SEBAB is just a touch on/off switch - no high or low setting like the OEM.

hahhahah

found something awesome:

www.leatherseats.com - give em a call

$130 for heated seats
$160+ or so for heated / massage combo

that's what i'm going for...sounds awesome

You know I just realized that the top-o-the-line 02 legacies have the heated seat/mirror defroster/wiper defroster package. If one really wanted the subaru parts.. I'm sure they could be adapted to an impreza.. although you'd still need custom wiring most likely. Wonder how much they are from subaruparts.com.
paultg 12-01-2001 05:25 PM

The subaru forester in the USA comes with the same heated seat options, but it seems that the aftermarket kits are your best bet for price.

Here is alink of a company I was going to use:

Jim, Yoni, is there anybody in the greater detroit area that will do this (leather, embrodery & heating)?... I'm not exactly comfortable with sending my seats out for extended periods of time considering I don't have another car...
WRXnFX 12-02-2001 02:28 AM

Can someone post part numbers for the OEM heat switch?

That's a good question man....I'll have to ask around...I'll let you know if I come across anything.

coo' thanks
Snowphun 12-02-2001 02:43 PM

Guys, this couldn't be much simpler: get an aftermarket kit, and put it in! Wiring is a piece of cake, just switched 12v and a ground. The leatherseats.com Carbotex heaters are $109 each and work very well. And the switches look excellent in the stock location.

With any of the kits you're gonna have to tear your seats apart, so if you aren't comfrotable with that, move along! :D Not too hard, but it is a pretty big project. All the more reason to get leather and put it on at the same time.

OEM switch looks best
wrx182 12-02-2001 05:48 PM

where do the stock switches sit?

and who the hell moved this? this really isn't dressup/style...more on the technical side if you ask me:rolleyes:
cardin555 12-02-2001 05:53 PM

I can get you the part number for the OEM seat heater switches for left and right tomorrow when I get to work. I work at a canadian Subaru dealer (in the parts departement). I know we sell kits for the TS wagon to install the seat heaters. It is a newer kit than the one mentioned above. The switches are different. I will also try to find out what the differences are between the US and CAN harnesses. If you have specific question about this you can also PM me.
Snowphun 12-02-2001 10:33 PM
where do the stock switches sit?
The stock switches replace the two dummies just above the cup holder by the parking brake.
and who the hell moved this? this really isn't dressup/style...more on the technical side if you ask me
Who knows, pretty foolish if you ask me. My thread on wiring driving lights was moved to dressup as well. Ummm, no thanks.

i dont get what all the fuss is about the wiring, why cant you just wire them like a set of fog lights, to the fuse box or the battery. aftermarket or oem doesnt matter cuz even if the switch connections dont mate, you can splice the wires and connect it to the OEM switch, thats what i did with my PIAA foglights.

Go to the Katzkin website and do a search for authorized dealers. Put your zip in and it'll return everything in the area.

cardin555 UR da man!!! Thanks for the OEM switch part numbers. Can you also get the OEM seat heater pad part numbers? If not then it looks like I'm buying the Carbotex ones from Leatherseats.com I'm not too worried about wiring them into the factory harness. I'm competent in custom wire jobs.

I've tried to do that - I spent the better part of a day playing around with a battery and voltmeter trying every possible combination of the 4 contacts inside the switch, and I still couldn't get it to function with both a high and low output for some reason. I think there may be some sort of cross-over wiring involved in the OEM connector which allows for this function, but I couldn't figure it out. If anyone else does please let me know!

BTW, the P/N for the OEM switch (left side) is 83075FA010

According to the 2002 Impreza Service Manual Wiring System Diagram Section 7, the Seat Heater system has a four pin switch. Common Power to both switches comes in at pin 2. Common Ground to both switches at pin 3. High ouput goes to pin 1 and low goes to pin 4. Good Luck.
WRXnFX 12-04-2001 01:24 AM

I'm working on a cheap solution to the aftermarket heated mirror problem. Subaru wiring manual section 7 also has the schematic for the heated mirrors. This manual is a great investment to all who plan on doing electric work on their car.

Snowphun 12-04-2001 02:56 PM

LOL! If you order it all from leatherseats, they'll throw in the leather interior for that price. Here's a pic of their switches, which look great to me! I had to shave a little plastic off the bottom end to make them a bit shorter, otherwise easy fit. No need to rewire into a stock switch, IMO. :)
WRXnFX 12-04-2001 09:21 PM

SNOWPHUN - install looks great. Does the Leatherseats.com heat element kit come with both back and cushion pads?

CARDIN555 - Thanks again for the part numbers
burton13 12-05-2001 12:04 AM

Snowphun - Sorry, I may be confused after reading the long string of posts.

It looks like you bought the Carbotex heated seat elements. Did you put leather on at the same time as the heated seats? If so, from what vendor & did you even bother removing the stock upholstery? How was it getting the leather or factory upholstery back on the seats?

Any electrical issues after having the seats installed? Any other pertinent advice?
AZ-GT 12-05-2001 01:13 AM

Well, this may be a lame question but anyway - Can a heater be installed on a fabric seat or just leather? I have no idea if there's too much heat to work with a 'regular' seat. Thanks!
Snowphun 12-05-2001 09:52 AM

WRXnFX1974: yes there are two elements per seat, and they are enormous compared to other kits. I didn't trim mine (in retrospect I should have), and they go from top to bottom of the actual seating surface. I didn't take any pictures, but the elements are about as thin and flexible as those blue shop paper towels you can buy.

burton13: yes, I put the elements in at the same time as I installed my leatherseats.com interior, which I got in the group buy back in October. My attitude was I wanted heated seats, and if I was going to go through all the trouble of pulling the seat covers, I may as well replace the covers with something else. The install of the leather requires removing the stock cloth, which isn't too hard, though it does take some guts to tear into a new car. As I mentioned before, IMO installing heater elements isn't for the faint of heart. It's not difficult, but it is time consuming, and you do need to take your seats out of the car, and pull them apart (top from bottom, trim off…). There are a number of people on this board who have done it, and are readily available to help along the way (I seemed to get stuck more than anyone else).

No electrical problems at all, apart from me not being able to make up my mind about where to get 12v. Most people think that heated seats draw a lot of power, but the power lead coming off each seat is around a 20 gauge wire (read: tiny), and each one has a built in 10amp fuse, so the draw isn't going to be that bad. I tapped into my unused cigarette lighter for switched power, and have had no problems, even with both seats on high.

AZ-GT: they can be used with any kind of seat, fabric would probably be better as it would heat up faster. I really use mine just to warm me up, then I turn them off. My girlfriend leaves it on high all day, must be cold blooded. ;)

I can post some pictures of the interior tonight if anyone's interested. Dark and light gray two tone leather. Cozy. I helped a friend put a different aftermarket heater kit in his Contour a few weeks ago. It was easier, as the pads were very small, but the quality wasn't the same. Thick pad, small area, big power regulator box to stuff under the seat, crummy switches. Those were like $75 each verses the $110 or so from leatherseats.

Hey guys.. I just talked to leatherseats.com about a group buy and they've given me the go ahead.

I'm waiting for an OK from Subie Gal so that I can post it in the GB classifieds (says private classifieds need special ok).

If all goes well anyone that wants heat in both seats will be saving about $60.
