When driving, allows you to know where the center of the wheel is without looking at it (you should be following the road).

More importantly, it allows the people doing an alignment on a track/rally car to quickly verify that the steering wheel hasn't moved and is pointed straight while setting the toe on the front wheels.

Co-driver's can't be that smart if they get into a car with a driver who can't tell which way the steering wheel is pointing. I should know, I am one.

Don't you mean, "I should know; I is one."
Nah, seriously, it also helps if you go off the road a little bit, and you can immediately verify whether the alignment goose is cooked.

wow... this thread is more  than OT!!!
but yeah, it's so you can tell where the wheels are pointing or more importantly, should be pointing.
it's kinda lost on our commuter car stock steering racks though- much better on real rally cars that are <2 turns lock to lock.

Drag racers use it to see if the wheels are straight when the front comes up off the ground. Since you cant always have two hands on the wheel and the g forces are throwing you back its nice to know that the steering wheel is straight w/o having to think about it.

that's not entirely true.
tape on steering wheels appeared in the mid-1980s, popularized by Scandahoovian pilotes like Rauno Altonen, Ari Vatanen, Markku Alen, etc.
and YES, these guys drove RWD Opels, Ford Escorts, Peugeots and BMWs...and YES, they were the original doriftas.

DG "the original doriftas" may not be entirely correct. From what I've read Bondurant is credited by many to be the inspiration for the way he would corner the early Cobra - he found it often faster to drift it around corners. Couldn't find the original article if my life depending upon it...

OK, "original dorifta" is a loose term. Pilotes like Tazio Nuvolari, Hans Stuck, and Pierro Tarruffi were drifting 600 hp Mercedes and Ferraris on 5" wide tires before WWII.
Then came sideways aces like Hawthorn, Moss, Hill et al.
Not much is really new in the car world, once you look back a ways.

With 1960's bias ply tire technology, cars in general were faster when they oversteered a lot more than they do now. With current tire technology, neutral to a slight understeer is faster in most cases.
Driving style has changed to adapt to tire technology, which has improved A LOT in the last 40 years.

Now Pat, you can't honestly say that you've NEVER gotten so crossed up that you had to do a quick gut check as to exactly which way the steering wheel was pointed?
But more seriously, the tape comes into play a little more in an older RWD (aka a couple of turns lane-to-lane if you know what I mean) with a two spoke wheel. Occassionally you really do end up grabbing the wheel 180 degrees off from where you wanted it to be. With a three spoke, it's a little more obvious that you've messed up when you see a spoke pointing straight up.

 I'm with you on that one. It really is rare that you need the tape and that's usually when you have no feeling at all coming back through the wheel. That just seems to happen a little more often in an old skool RWD with 4+ turns lock to lock.

Does actually help when doing recce.
Due to lower speeds it helps to 'grade' the corner.
But like Pat said - you don't really have time to look at it while racing.

after some thinking, the yellow strip might be useful when you are drifting or rallying when you need to turn the steering wheel so often unlike the track racing cos you need to shuffle your steering wheel....
I dont know.... Are there any professional rally drivers who can point out this issue?
