2004 One Lap of America... who's in? part 1

2004 One Lap of America... who's in?
So by my last count, there are two WRX's, one STi, and one RS signed up for One Lap this year. Looks like mid-priced sedan is going to be one hell of a battle. Other vehicles in the class include an EVO, a Volvo 740 sedan (V8), two Impalla SS's, an A4, a 318, and a Jetta. Did I mention we're happy to be classed in economy? :) Any of you other guys local to New England? I heard a rumor that Keith Casey may be running this year in the wagon.... can anyone confirm or deny?

Fitz
Arioch 01-13-2004 03:23 PM

I know that there will be at least 1 SRT-4, and probably 2, one Mopar sponsored "factory" car (like last years) and one Mopar sponsored private-party car.

Should be a great bunch of races. I'm going to try to make it to the event at Road America this year.

Fitz 01-13-2004 03:30 PM

Yeah... those would go into mid-priced sedan as well me thinks (thank god). :)

Good luck to everyone! It was a kickass time last year in the WRX. I might be back next year with a killer ride if some stuff falls into place ;)

No Go 01-13-2004 08:26 PM

My brother and I are planning to do it again. Although an STI is our backup car if my Chevy don't come together (engine sitting next to it!)

It will be great to see these new mini supercars on the track. Hopefully some will have good sounding blowoff valves to add to the realism...even though it may not add power, etc.

:)

The event is a riot...no matter what you drive!

bcblues 01-14-2004 08:37 AM

I thought Mopar sponsored TWO SRT-4's at last years event?
Arioch 01-14-2004 02:05 PM

AFAIK, there was only one Mopar sponsored factory car. It was driven by 2 PVO engineers, and it was the test-car for the Mopar stage 1 upgrade. They also were testing the Quaife LSD that comes stock on the 04's and is an aftermarket option for the 03's. I don't remember hearing about a second SRT-4.

This was the car that went up onto the drivers side, and almost rolled. Car came back down on all 4 wheels, and was ready to go again.

-dave
bcblues 01-14-2004 03:43 PM

I must have been thinking of the 2 PVO engineers. Who knows how my mind operates.

Every WRX-STX competitor would get a set of these.
No Go 01-15-2004 06:52 PM

I believe the price has risen to $2100.

If you are doing it for track time...waste of money. If you are doing it to see many different tracks then it is a bargain.

I believe we burned 300 gallons of gas in 2001. Got a hotel each night. No speeding tickets (V1). And felt like royalty at each event...

After just two OLOA events we have seen 14 different tracks throughout the country.

We had a sponsor by an exhaust company...free $1000 exhaust just for running their stickers-it even worked like gang busters (17 RWHP)! That was half the entry fee folks...

Again-something that one won't forget!

Truth be told the three of us are still arguing about tire selection. Something in a 265-285 series though... 17"rims. We ran Pirelli Asimetrico's (225/45/16) in 2002. Great tires. Zero Complaints.

i'm most likely out. i think i'll spend the year setting up the STi for 2005, which was my original plan anyway. or get my scca competition license.

i'm glad fitz is in econo. that gives subie a shot at econo, mid-price sedan and suv. the srt-4's will end up in mid-price, not econo, so fitz should clean up.

You sure about that? I met Dale from Lake Effect Racing at Summit Point Friday and he mentioned that Brock had his SRT-4 classed in econo.
lukerussell 03-23-2004 09:33 AM

one lap rules are never cast in stone. early on brock was saying that the srt-4 didn't meet the spirit of the econo class and would be moved to mid-price sedans. so who knows? i thought if dodge was entering the same factory srt-4 it did last year, they would want to be in mid-price sedans to whip up on the sti's and evo's. but, then again, they could be in econo and whip up on them in the overall results and have an even more compelling story.

Brock said that Dale is swapping the SRT-4 goodies into a base model Neon. These same rules allow someone to swap STi goodies into an Impreza 1.8L, 2.2L or base model 2.5L and still run in Econo class.

Fitz lost an oil pump this weekend and the good possibility of a rod bearing in the process. It's not looking promising at all for us right now. Haven't had a chance to update the site or the sponsors as of yet.... too busy trying to source a cheap motor and not let WaC and RyanC down.

Thanks again to David and Patrick at Pro-Import.com for rescuing us from the depths of the gravel trap and lending us their shop and expertise in making a CV boot for a random car fit our SRT-4 Neon.

Fitz, get that engine replaced, or bring an Avis Rental, you HAVE to come back...

We don't know where we will be classed this year, the change of the price guideline changed all the rules... I expect all the SRT-4's to be in economy because of the $19,995 MSRP and and the inclusion of the SVT and MazdaSpeed cars in Economy. Wherever we end up, it's going to be a good time this year. Honestly, I'm hoping I don't end up in the same class with the Factory SRT-4, even if I was a comparable driver, I know I can't build a comparable car... Okay, maybe I can build the car with the same off-the-shelf parts, but I still can't hang...

Fitz, Patrick, and all the other vehicles entering. Plan on getting a digital video camera installed someplace in the car, preferably with a mini-DV format. Place any sponsor decals you wish within the frame of the video. Bring enough mini-DV tapes to have a fresh tape for every scored event (12 is probably enough), and I'll be able to provide media coverage for you. Make sure you bring an external battery charger (or hardwire the camera power) and a remote for the camera, we'll take care of everything else.

I have added a teammate who is responsible for collecting these tapes at every event, then creating videos that will be available for free download that same day, hopefully within a couple hours of the run.

If anyone is going to need nitrous, let me know. As usual, we'll be carrying about 70 pounds of it and don't mind lending it out when we know we can get a refill in time. There usually ends up being a lot of people who want it, but we can only accomodate one or two teams.

I'm not about excluding or hating, or stuff like that. After driving VW's (stock and with 400whp), Neons, the 911 turbo, and even a Saturn, I've learned that during Onelap, it's not the car that wins the event, it's the team. I was supposed to drive the WRX in 2002, the year it won Mid-Priced, but switched teams three days before the event when a friend in a VW needed a co-driver. In the end, Onelap is about the people and the friendships made during that week of hell. I still owe Fitz and his codrivers beer from a couple years ago...

Get the cameras in the cars, make yourself at home under the Mopar tent, and get footage of a side-by-side STi/SRT-4 dragrace to turn One at Heartland Park or Pikes Peak, and regardless of who comes out ahead, the footage will make it to the internet. Then we'll tell lies about how fast we were going and what was being said on the radios...

See you in a month David, I may not be faster on the tracks, but if you're caravaning with us, you'll get used to Neon taillights... Thanks again for keeping the shop open for us in Maryland, we've got cold water at the tracks for you and Patrick.

There's no reason to miss Onelap, especially anything as trivial as a blown engine... engines are consumables, like brake pads...

There's plenty of time to do an engine swap, we did one in 13 hours during the event in 2000, that included building the new engine. If Fitz can't find a way to get your engine in his car, he's not really trying

I'm entering a 2004 Neon. It's not worth worrying about where it gets classed in the end, because there's nothing that can be done about it anyway. For example, the SVT Focus wasn't less than $15K last year, but we had to deal with it. The 5.0 Mustang was never meant to be an Economy car, neither was the Supra or Daytona, but they all ended up in Economy at one time or another. The Nissan 200 SX SE-R was placed in Economy, Mid-Priced Sedan, and SSGT2 in consecutive years, it all depends on how the mystery people at Car and Driver are feeling about your particular car at that moment. I expect to be protested by a couple people regardless of what class the car ends up in, the nice thing is that I have no say in the outcome of those protests so I don't even have to think about them. However, it is fun to watch Brock Sr. berate and torture whiners who think they can legislate class standings.

My advice to anyone who doesn't like where their car gets classed this year, "wait until next year, it will be worse". And, if it's another car in your class that you think is misclassed, think long and hard about how you want to be perceived during this highly social event, formal protests are always met with resistance from the organizers. They will be the first to tell you that the rules are just guidelines and that they can interpret them anyway they want, if you want to protest a competitor, join the SCCA.

The next iteration of the entrant list will sort out some of the classing things. By the start of the event I expect my car to be in SSGT2 Small Bore with the STi and EVO8. I've heard rumors that cars like ours will be lumped into the same class because of their obvious similarities in target audiences. At least they can't be placed in Vintage....

Completely differt topic, sort of... Anyone here us Verizon Wireless Internet? I have some questions for you....

Dale

M. Hurst 03-25-2004 07:38 PM

If you're planning on doing One-Lap, don't worry about what class you're in, because there's no rules limiting the modifications to the cars. An overall winner could come from any class.

An STI, lightened, moderately modded and well driven, is a nearly ideal car for this event, and easilly a top 5 car, maybe a winner with more power.

For the past three years, I've driven Ted Lyon's 600 hp Ford Thunderbird (Thunderchicken?) on one-lap, this year I'll be driving Bill Cook's Volvo 740, which Bill claims now has over 700 flywheel hp. These "Frankenstien" cars can be very fast but almost impossible to be consistent.

It was fun last year racing against Luke and Tom, by the end of the event they were both pretty much kicking my butt.

Why don't I drive an STI at one-lap?...No-one has offered.
Onelap 03-26-2004 06:46 AM

And if everyone else is lucky, nobody will offer Mike a ride in the STi :D

Seriously though, Mike is right. The only people who think about proper classing during the event are people who are not at the event.

What makes the STi so appealing for Onelap is that it's so forgiving. It would also make a great tow vehicle for getting the Neons out of the gravel traps...

They have an XT that they are bringing. I don't think that car will be as extreme as conebasher, but it should still be quite a contender.
lukerussell 03-26-2004 09:23 AM

SUV should be interesting. You have the returning overall One Lap winner entering SUV in his NASTRUCK Ram 1500. An SOA Cobb Forester. My buddies Forester in Sarasota. Too bad the Turbo Porsche Cayenne isn't running this year, because I think it would come in last.

I should see the Sarasota Forester tomorrow at Sebring. We'll see how it stands up vs. my bone stock sti.

Adee's truck is much more than a NASTRUCK.... It's what every truck in the Craftsman series aspires to be when it grows up.

Even when he had the Viper engine in it, the entire engine was located behind the front axle line, and it has chassis stiffening that still isn't legal in NASCAR. A couple years ago Ron said that it was faster than his Viper on a roadcourse, I can't wait to see what it does this year...

Last year was a pretty light year when it comes to super-sick vehicles, this looks like another Big Dog year, it's going to be interesting.

Tom, Make sure Bill puts a digital video camera in the Volvo, anytime you drive has got to make for good footage....

Unfortunately, there are other non-trivial priorities for Fitz. I would have pushed him harder to take my engine, or at the very least drive transit for Ryan and I, if the engine was the only obstacle to running this year. We already took care of the brake pads and toluene, and were ready to order tires.

Good luck Dale, maybe we'll catch up with you at another event.
