I watched that race when it happened, and I remember it.
He was my favourite for years.
But, I knew that story. :(
If you watch the video of Senna prior to the race, it's almost as though he had a premonition something bad would happen, though. He was very shaken up by Ratzenberger's death and was outspoken about the safety of the circuit.
What struck me most was watching Senna stop his car during a race and run to the aide of a fellow driver who had crashed. Unreal.

Since we're on the subject of Senna, does anyone know what was exactly said in this picture?

All I know is that it was during the French Grand Prix.

Was he blindingly quick? Yes.
Could he have won much more had he lived? Yes.
Could he win in an inferior car? You betcha.
Is he the best ever? I don't think I can say that.

The article about the NSX reminded me about a story that a co-worker of mine told me about Senna. That is, the time when he qualified 1.4-odd seconds faster than Prost. Apparently, he was just ticking off these amazing laps when, all of a sudden, he just pulled over and stopped. When asked later about why he stopped, his reply was something like: "I didn't feel as though I was in my body, I felt like I was floating above my body and car watching myself." (don't hang me for misquoting) He apparently didn't feel like that was safe, so that's why he stopped!
Amazing - an out of body experience while running in an F1 car. That's my favorite story of any driver, ever.
cheers,
C
