First practice day is done. 2 feet of snow at the summit forced all cars to practice on the lower section from Startline to the Ski Area today. Melting snow on the edge of the course turned into a soupy mess if you got off line. Both Semi's went over the edge as well as a Stock Car, Steve Goeglein I believe. All drivers are OK. Minor damage to the Big Rigs, major damage to the trees they mowed over. The #27 Stock Car lost most of it's body work but should be OK for qualifying. Robby Unser looked fast in the Suby as well as WRC World Champion Stig Blomquist in the 850 hp RS200. Rally driver Jimmy Keeney was not allowed to drive his 150 hp Group 2 Honda Civic because he "lacked experience" according to SCCA officials. So he drove his 700 hp Open Wheel car and is on pace with Donner and Dallenbach for the overall win.
That's all for today. Need sleep.

Oh my that is some classic irony.
So I take it if you're not in an SCCA class there's a whole different set of officials? Do these separate groups of officials even acknowledge each other? :alien:

You are correct. They are suppose to help each other out. SCCA guys start running on Thursday with about 40 cars so we should see how it works out.
Jimmy Keeney is 22 and has raced on the mountain since he was 16. He has finished in the top three overall three times.
I'll be safe Jamie.
www.ppihc.com is supposed to have info but they are very slow. Mostly all once a year volunteers. When times are posted in the pits they are hand written.
Brought lots of underwear.:D
In Pikes Peak Open, Unser is in a stripped JDM Sti. There are two AWD Nissan 350Z's also straight from Japan and my friend Brian Moody is in a 600 HP home built S4 with Porsche bits. I saw both 350Z's run. Don't know why one isn't listed in the times.

It was wet and soupy up there according to our driver on part of the course yesterday. We'll be doing more engine mapping tonight on our open class car.
We did engine mapping @ Mt. Evans yesterday and the road was closed due to snow early but when we got there it was fine and dry in all but a couple corners.
I got to drive the Grp. N car for the mapping session. I can check that dream off my "before I die..." list.
Pics will be up soon.

Blew trick turbo yesterday. Kept driving. Sucked rest of turbo into engine. Goodbye engine.
They ordered a new 860 hp engine out of the catalog and had it overnighted from London. Missed qualifying as they were putting it in.

My busines went bankrupt, which forced me to go bankrupt with it. Had to give up my house to the bank that gave us the business loan.
Now, most of my **** is in storage, and I am living with my parents again... WITH my wife, & two daughters.
I will get you that tape back. This is SOOO not like me to get so forgetful.,

NEW INFO>>>>>>>>>>>>>
BLOMQVIST AND ARROW MACH 2 RACING REMAIN UPBEAT AFTER MISSING QUALIFYING
The Arrow Mach 2 Racing team together with driver, Stig Blomqvist missed official qualifying for the Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb today due to a turbo and engine failure during testing on Wednesday. The PPIHC Race Director, Phil Layton, has however allowed the team to still race in Saturdays event.
Despite air freighting a replacement engine from the UK, there was not enough time for the teams race technicians to install it into the Ford RS200E in time for the early morning qualifying today. The teams engine technician, Geoff Page, is however confident that the new engine will be fitted and running by this afternoon. He commented Whilst we are not yet certain why the turbo failed yesterday, it would appear that the air flow may have reached supersonic speed within the turbo and this caused the failure and subsequent damage to the engine. It was however prudent that we arranged to despatch the second engine as it has allowed us to be ready for this eventuality. I am confident that we will have car running again by Thursday afternoon ready for a provisional shakedown test at Pikes Peak International Raceway on Friday. The sub ten minute challenge on Saturday is definitely still on
Indeed Page advises that there is an upside to the situation in that he has built the replacement engine to higher tolerances and feels that it will provide Stig Blomqvist with an even better chance of a sub 10 minute run on Saturday.

That car is a monster!
When we rolled out our car on a cold October morning at MIRA (Motor Industries Research Association) we expected some phenomenal results. We were stunned! Running at only 1.4 Bar boost (80% power), our Ford RS 200 Evolution Ultra-Lightweight accelerated from 0-140 mph within 200 yards....in only 6 seconds. That's quicker than an F1 car! Whilst outright acceleration is only part of the package necessary to win Pikes Peak and Queenstown, I think we can confidently predict that nothing will touch us on the straights! In the coming months Stig will be putting the car through its paces in the other areas necessary to perform to its maximum potential during both hill-climbs and he can't wait to run at full power!!
Facts and Figures
Venue .. MIRA
Date ..21st October 1998
Weather .Early rain, turning fine.
Power - 680 b.h.p.
Torque - 480 ft lbs
Fully laden weight - 920 kgs
Power to weight - 740 bhp/tonne
Maximum Speed - 140 mph @ 8200 rpm
Performance 0 - 140 mph in 6 seconds (And we have another 100 bhp to come !)
The car was timed to the rev limiter in 5th gear, and the maximum speed calculated from gearing and tyre diameter, so times to intermediate speeds were not measured, but expect:
0 - 100 mph in 3-4 seconds
0 - 60 mph in under 2 seconds
Average linear acceleration is greater than 1g.
Our car reaches 200 yards quicker than a stone dropped over a cliff!
Subaru Wins Pikes Peak!

Robby Unser set the fastest time of the day to the top of Pikes Peak in his Pikes Peak Open Subaru Sti! Times are still unofficial after another wild day on the mountain. A two hour blizzard, hail storm, lightning and zero visability as clouds surrounded Devil's Playground through all plans out the window. Unser made it to the top before the mountain took it's vengence on racers and spectators. The second run up by SCCA RallyCars was cancelled and the remaining racers were stopped at Glen Cove. I'll get more details in a few minutes.
| StuBeck | 06-26-2004 10:18 PM |
Wow, that car is just insanity.
| Kuro | 06-26-2004 10:48 PM |
Kudos to the driver that will be taming that beast.
| rupertberr | 06-26-2004 11:01 PM |
The car was lame. The driver is well over the hill. I just about fell asleep everytime he came by.
| rupertberr | 06-26-2004 11:06 PM |
Times under ten minutes were from the start line to Glen Cove. Unser was fined $2,500 for ripping race officials after his run.
Please use at your earliest convenience. Official results will be released at 9a mountain time Sunday, June, 27th.

The RS200. The mechanics were cool but the car is way over hyped. Probably has half the horsepower stated. Less then 5 seconds faster then a two wheel drive NASCAR type stock car in rainy conditions. Stig may have been great once but he is an old slow guy now.
Robby Unser looked fast all week in the Suby. Rhys Millen was hot in the GTO. Jimmy Keeny was fast when his car worked. Richard, Styles, Verdier, Moberly, Choinere and Shepherd all impressed me. Not Stig. IMHO

Gotcha...yea, the main thing that made me go "wow" is the fact that they said it had 850 hp...if it doesn't, then meh, its okay.

Stig is an old slow guy?! Guess that's why he won the Group N in the PWRC at the Acropolis rally just recently?
You cannot generalize about a driver/car based on their performance in one event.

Well maybe he can't drive at Pikes Peak. I have seen him race there for three years and I have been unimpressed. Maybe he is chicken of the 4000 foot drop offs. He comes no where near the edge of the road. With that car having more horsepower, AWD and lighter weight he should be 2 minutes ahead of a stock rear wheel drive car, not 5 seconds. What a joke.

Don't be sorry, it's not your fault.
I'm surprised no one cares that Subaru won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb for the first time ever. Unser, who is an ass outside of the cockpit, drove great all week. He was right on the tail of the top two Open Wheelers and faster then the RS200 on every occasion despite less then half the horsepower and 1,000 lbs more weight. Even if Donner and Dallenbach had run all the way to the top they would not have won because of the road conditions. So well done Subaru and Robby Unser.
BTW Robby was fined $2,500 after the race for ripping the officials.:D
PS Above opinions made on a total of 20 hours of sleep for the past week.;)

Unser had every right to be upset. They wouldn't let him switch to mud tires, made him use the same tires as in qualifying, even though the weather conditions were much worse at race time. They should have allowed a switch for safety reasons alone, if nothing else. Very irresponsible of them in my opinion.
The guy speaks his mind. I respect him for that. Too bad the race was marred by bad weather.

Are you kidding? It's a RULE, not a suggestion. If they were to allow tire choice for Sat.(for safety reasons), they would have had to say something BEFORE the race. Some people had already run. The cars have to run on the same type of rubber they qualified on. Robby was just crying. No surprise. I guess it wasn't too unsafe, since he got it under 12 minutes.
The storm was crazy though. It sucks that the afternoon guys couldn't go all the way up.

If that's the rule, then it sounds like a rule they seriously need to re-evaluate in view of how the strange the weather can be in Colorado. 6 inches of snow, 2 inches of hail, lightning, rain, and thunder all on the same day is a bit much to not allow for any tire changes.:D
The sad thing is, the PPIHC could be one of the premier racing events in the country, but unfortunately it suffers from minimal promotion (most people in Colorado hardly know it exists), poor media coverage (only a couple quarter-page articles in the Denver paper with no final standings listed), and no live TV. Some drivers have even expressed the opinion that the locals want to do away with the race altogether. That's a shame because it's one of the most colorful and unusual racing events in the world.
Hope things go a little better next year.

Robby Unser = Whiny little biatch. WTH was all that crab ass crap on television??? I'm glad he got fined.
I was in the middle of service when the hail storm hit... We put new calipers on our STi for stage 5 but obviously didn't get to use them.
Stig is still fast and he's a really friendly guy. Talked to him and he seemed pretty cool.
I still wish Pat would have gotten the chance to take on Leon in stage 5. He said he had his overheating problem solved but I'd rather see a stage cancelled than run it and have some team go off and get hurt.
The Akaba's seemed pretty fast on days one and two. Glad to see them come back after their horrible wreck @ Laughlin last year. :)
PPIHC officials seems very disorganized. We had to get down the hill on day two to collect our trailer to fix our Grp. N car but they made us wait for over 2 hours when they said it was gonna be 45 min. :furious:

Were you there? I have been on the mountain for 19 straight years. I stood within 20 feet of him on each run. If he would have driven better I would have been closer. First time I saw him this year was at Gilly's corner, he couldn't find a gear, estimated speed 20 mph. 2nd time I saw him at Brown Bush missed the apex by about thirty feet, more then any driver that came through there. Third time I saw him was at start of leg 2 in the W's. Came in to the corner way too tight, fishing for gears, exit speed five miles an hour. Blue Sky he was doing about 80 not bad but still about ten slower then
Unser and he could have used more of the road. Talked to his mechanic. He blew a turbo but instead of pulling over he kept going. Turbo sucked into the engine and blows engine.
I have ridden with Rod Millen, Rhys Millen and Mark Lovell and on this occasion Stig couldn't drive in their shadows. In all but one occasion I would have been faster in my street car and yes I have won 5 driving championships.
Perhaps he was sick, perhaps the altitude was getting to him (Rod always used oxygen), perhaps he was just having an off week, perhaps the car was not all it was made up to be. Tuning a car at sea level (England) and trying to get it to run at 14,000 feet does strange things. If that car had 400 horsepower I would be surpised. There were at least 20 drivers on the mountain that week who could have gone faster in that car. Even then if it was working right it still wouldn't have got within 2 minutes of Millen's record run. Now that was a car and a driver.
I think this statement applies to you: "Uninformed and just plain stupid posts like yours are what makes this site suck."

I have some Questions for you rupertberr.....
Please Tell me- " I would have been faster in my street car and yes I have won 5 driving championships."
What 5 Championships did you Win ???
IMOP, I have always thought Rod Millen was way over rated, Yes his Car/Truck was one of the best cars ever to race the Mt. But put him in a WRC or Group N rally car Stig would beat him like a seal 9 out of 10 Times I don't think he could even carry his bags....
But we will never find out.......

OK my street car is a PGT WRX that I RallyCross. I have driven up the mountain at least a 100 times in the past 19 years, so I know it like the back of my hand. I have hustled up the road during private test sessions and been chased but not caught by Robby Unser, David Donner and Nick Sanborn. All of whom wanted to know what I had under the hood since they couldn't catch me. Yes and Robby Unser is a @#$$%% and he owes me $150 from years past but he can drive.

What 5 Championships did you Win ???
2002 Valvoline Cup National Champion(1)
2002 SCCA Division 8 PGT Champion(2)
2002 SCCA Colorado Region PGT Champion(3)
2003 Valvoline Cup Runner Up
2003 SCCA Colorado Regional PGT Champion(4)
2004 PPSCC Ice Racing Champion(5)
2004 Current Valvoline Cup Rally National Points Leader
2004 Current SCCA Colorado Region PGT Points Leader
I have had a good run but I don't consider myself anything more then slightly above average and not worthy of holding most of these drivers jock straps. The point is Stig was so slow most anybody with any amount of talent could have been faster. He looked lost. He may have been a great driver last week, he might be a great driver next week, he just looked plain awful every time he came by me this week. I have worked over 3,000 races in my career. I know what slow is.
Now the cause of this slowness is a question mark. I am going to take an educated guess that 60% of the blame falls on the car and the rest on the driver. Part of it could be the altitude and his age. He didn't use oxygen. Lack of Oxygen effects the brain. Maybe that was why he was getting lost on a 156 turn course with no co-driver. Koichi Horiuchi, who has 14 more years experience on the mountain, passed out when he got out of the car after his first run up there this year. I saw this with my own eyes. His crew caught him. 5 spectators were taken off the mountain on raceday because of severe altitude sickness.

We are talking in his prime. The mountain is a different beast. Some people do great on it and some don't. I think Rod's best drive up the mountain was in 1992 when he drove the 125 hp Hyundai up there. He was absolutely brilliant, great drifts, hardly touched the breaks , total momentum and he beat a pair of 300ZX's and a Camaro with triple the horsepower. Roger Mears drove one of the Nissan's. The Toyota was just sick fast. He had to road race it up the mountain but he went right to the edge. We would review photos after each day and his crew would turn white when they saw how close he came to the edge. Often he would go over it.
But we will never find out.......
Rod is going to race the Grand Junction Hill Climb in August. It's going to be a grudge match between all the top drivers from this years race. Only Unser has not commited but they are working on it.

I want to reiterate, I am not disparaging Stig's career, I am only talking about this week and this week Stig was not on it.
The best driver this week IMHO was Jimmy Keeney who finished 4th. He was happy with that because he was down two cylinders. He can drive and make your heart stop.
Let's get off Stig and move on. There are twenty other drivers who deserve praise for their abilities this week, not the least being Patrick Richard and Rhys Millen.

^ Sums it up for me.
It was a little lackluster, maybe because of the Mitsu/Rubyroo factory teams gone. But then again, there was excellent comp.
I missed the sidecar motorbikes and the electric car and the sprint cars.
You simply cannot predict the weather in the mountains, Im sorry you cant. You win some you lose some. 2003 just happened to be a excellent year.
This mess with Robby and Stig, let it go people. I appreciate Stig coming out, and it was the spectacle of my day and it adds to the mystique of the rally.
I'm really dissappointed at the lack of media coverage for such a honoured event worldwide. The Denver Post had a teeny article in the back page of the sports section.
The race organizers could have done better with the timing equipment. Heck, our SCCA region may have handled that better.
Overall, great event, and I'll be on the hill in 2005.

I have read your comments and of course every person is entitled to their view, no matter how biased and factually incorrect these views are. Next time you are in the UK, contact the team and I will show you the engine on the Mountune dyno at sea level and you can evidence for yourself that the replacement engine that the team fitted on Thursday before the race actually makes 890BHP. Of course I don't expect you to believe me but luckily there are thousands out there who appreciate Stig's expertise (whilst also accepting that Robby is also a good driver and the car prepared for him at PPIHC 2004 was excellent)..

Hi Mick,
I think I may have talked to you at the Ski Area after the first engine blew. Dynoing at Sea level even with all the corrections you can make is still not the same as running at 14,000 feet. I spoke to several other teams who were having similar problems after tuning at sea level and not getting near the horsepower they thought. Even the Denver tuned Audi S4 that claimed to have 600 hp had only 275 when it got to the top. I have no doubt you had 890 HP at sea level but what did you have at 14,000 feet? You must agree with me that if all your facts and figures are correct you guys should have walked away with the race. You had more horsepower then anyone, a lighter car then all but the Open Wheelers, All Wheel drive and a World Rally Champion driver. The race should have been yours. I was rooting for you as a fan, reporter and photojournalist.
Most off my comments were supositions trying to find an excuse as to why the car was so slow. I have been on the Mountain for 19 straight years. Please tell me why you think the car was so slow? My visual experience was that Stig was off line on most occasions and he didn't have the power coming out of the corner. I saw the last run on race day from the Ski Area to the Finish and Stig had a fine conservative run, not coming near to using all of the road. If I remember correctly he was 48 seconds slower then Unser on the bottom third of the course on race day. Unser was driving a stripped street car with only 400 HP. Please tell me why the difference?

Thanks for the advice about the difference in horsepower at 14000ft but if you think we had not sussed this fact in the past 5 years of preparation, you must be mistaken. Both Garrett and ourselves have worked on this very fact. Don't feel Stig was slow at all, if you are judging by the last run from the Ski Area then this would explain it, this is when our turbo blew. Stig also did not drive through the problem, telemetry showed he immediately realised the problem and in fact saved more damage to the original engine than some other drivers might of. We have the data of exactly what horsepower we can pull at 14000ft but your comments have been so highly biased, I think we would only want to discuss such things with true fans. Surely your comparison of Robby run in the dry on race day with Stig's run in the wet evidence that you are not in recognition of all the facts.
Mick

For those that don't know, the RS200E (for Evolution) came with ~620HP from the factory. Mountune have a lot of experience tuning the BDT-E so I don't doubt >800 BHP from it.

PS what chassis number is this car?
