2005 Studs on Ice time trial / track day on ice FEB 12th 2005
The Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club
presents:

2005 Studs on Ice Time Trial event

Test your driving skills on studded or unstudded winter tires in a combination Open Track Lapping and time trial event on Ice

Winter tires only, no all season or summer tires allowed.

Date: Saturday, February 12th, 2005

Location: Round Lake , in the village of Round Lake, NY

Price: $35.00 per driver

Registration: from 8:00 am to 10:30 am at the Grapevine Deli [directions below]

First run group off at 11:00 am

There will be one timed solo run for each driver at about 3:30 pm. Trophies will be given out to the top three drivers in each class.

All new format this year.

Here are the key changes:

1. Instead of the traditional solo format, with it's waiting around all day to make your run, we are switching to a new "track day" format with four "Run groups" that will run in 10 minute open track lapping sessions, with approx. 10 cars in each group. This will give you more track time than the last three events we have held combined. There will be a single timed solo run at the end of the event, and trophies awarded to the top three in each class.

2. There will be passing allowed in three of the four run groups, but only on the straight[s]. This will be monitored very closely. Point by's are optional and encouraged. Don't worry we plan on plowing the the track wide enough to slide a tractor tralier around again this year, with plenty of room to pass. Passing will only be done in a well educated, non-competitive, and controlled fashion. The car being overtaken must help facilitate a safe pass, and will not "race" the passing car to the braking zone. There will be a set of cones at the end of the straightaway[s] denoting where you must have your pass completed.

3. We will have one run group that will accomodate all of the driver's who don't want any passing in their run group.

4. In the unlikely event that any participant's vehicle touches another particpant's vehicle, one or both of them [determined by the course marshals] will be excluded from the remainder of the event without a refund. This should not be an issue, but has to be mentioned. You are not racing the other cars in your run group.

Class pairings for run groups:

Seven Classes include:
All 2WD Rubber-to-Ice [2WD-R]
All 4WD Rubber-to-Ice [4WD-R]
All 2WD w/street studs [2WD-S]
All 4WD w/street studs [4WD-S]
All cars with Menards [M] class
All 2WD bolts "X-perimental" [2WD-X]
All 4WD w/bolts [4WD-X]

As stated above, there will be one timed run for each driver at the end of the program to determine the winners in each class. This will be like the final stage of the Swedish Rally. You've got just one chance to be the quickest. :D You will have had all day for "recce" and practice.

Existing classes will be paired in this way:

Run group #1: Menard, 2WD-X, and 4WD-X, cars run together.

Run group #2: 2WD-S and 4WD-S cars run together.

Run group# 3: 2WD-R and 4WD-R cars run together.

Run group #4: No passing group [Rubber or Studded cars only - no Menard or X cars]

Notes:

***** Dual driver cars will be able to run in different run groups of similar performance. In other words, a "Group #3" car's with second driver would run with either the "Group #2" cars or in "Group #4" [the "No Passing"] group. Each driver will choose their run group when pre-registering, so we can organize the sizes of each group.

***** Like last year, there will be a maximum of two drivers per car.

***** Final results will be tallied much more quickly, and trophies will be awarded for all classes.

***** There is an additional benefit of this new format for all eligible Street Legal cars [under 3,200 lbs.]that are invited to stay over and race with us the next day in our regular wheel to wheel "Street Legal" classes. They will have practiced the course extensively, and will have the advantage of knowing it like the back of their hand for Sunday's races. Keep in mind the SL and SLU [unstudded] classes have a strict "no contact" in effect.

The date of this year's event is scheduled [weather permitting as usual] for Saturday February 12th, 2005. The location will be much more convenient for the majority of you than last year's event. It is planned to be held on Round Lake, located in Round Lake, NY, about 25 minutes north of Albany.

Morning registration will be at the Grapevine Deli /gas station, just off of Northway [I-87] Exit 11.

Directions from the South:
Take exit 24 of the New York State Thruway, for I-87 North [a.k.a the "Northway"]. Get off of the Northway at Exit 11 for Round Lake. Bear left at the end of the ramp onto Round Lake Rd., go under the Northway, and on your right will be the Grapvine Deli / gas station. There is a truck stop next door, so there is plenty of parking for everyone. After registering, go left [back the way you came on Round Lake Rd], under the Northway again, and proceed into the village of Round Lake. Don't make any turns, just wind your way through the village and proceed until you come out to a "Y" at a traffic light, which is route 9. Bear right onto route 9 South and you'll see the lake on your left. Just a few hundred yards up, look for the second opening in the guardrail on your left. In the middle of the big opening is the lake access to the event. Be very careful when crossing oncoming traffic on route 9 and turn left into the access. Follow the plowed path to the pit area.

Directions from the North: Northway south to exit 11, then bear right onto Round Lake Rd. The Grapevine Deli is on your right. Follow same instructions "From the south" from the "After registering" heading, to get to the lake.

Might want to include the Date in the top of the post. ;) It's kinda buried (thought it was about classing and skipped it since I thought it didn't apply.)

that and a price. A few of us from VT are interested.

Very interesting...

Multiple cars on course sounds like it could get pretty hairy though. The last Studs on Ice event I did had a 1.5 mile course, how many passing zomes do you think you'll have? I'd be concerned about a group getting bunched up and having an incident if one of them loses control. People without wheel to wheel seat time may be easily spooked.

But I am very tempted.
Very interesting...

Multiple cars on course sounds like it could get pretty hairy though. The last Studs on Ice event I did had a 1.6 mile course, how many passing zones do you think you'll have?
Paul,
Peolple underestimate our officiating at these events. We do not require that particpants work at our events. You are not at the mercy of inexperienced workers, from having participants pressed into a position they know nothing about, like working a corner flagging station.
People without wheel to wheel seat time may be easily spooked.
We have a run group with "No Passing" for them. Remember: you are not racing the other cars in your group.

It should also be mentioned that if someone has never raced on ice before, doesn't have proper winter tires, and feels that they aren't ready for an event like this, that is understandable. A.M.E.C. expects less cars this year, but with more experienced drivers. Our goal is not to attract drivers with worn out "all-season" tires that spend the day repeatedly spun out in a snowbank. There are other lower speed solo venues for them.
I'd be concerned about a group getting bunched up and having an incident if one of them loses control.
As usual, cars will be set out with equal large distances between them on a huge track. If there is a group bunched up [which there shouldn't be if you paid attention at the driver's meeting] the car[s] holding up the pack will be black flagged, and asked to pull off on a specially prepared "pull off" lane at Start/Finish. They will be held there a few moments until the others have passed and then be sent back out. We plan on having two passing zones, clearly marked with pylons.

OH! That makes sense. I don't know what kind of a "start" I was picturing, but I thought we'd start off together. This makes a lot more sense to me now.

Mike, thanks for the answers, they clear up most of my concerns. Less people, more seat time = more fun. :)

You don't think you can get enough people to restrict it to snow tires or better (as in no all season or summer)?

You don't think you can get enough people to restrict it to snow tires or better (as in no all season or summer)?
Forgive me for not making it clear initially, I will edit my event flyer to reflect that we will definately be requiring winter tires to run in this event. No offence to anyone, but trying to run an event like this on summer or all season tires is a handicap you shouldn't place on yourself, or the others in your run group. It just makes no sense to try to drive quickly on ice without winter tires. That's why I have a line on the registration form to fill in this year, asking what brand and model of winter tires you will be using. I have two extra sets of studded Nokian Hakkapelliitta's set aside for loaning out a participants already. There's plenty of time to pick up a set winter of tires on ebay or at the Tire Rack. :)

X-Perimental class taking center stage this year!
Registration is filling up nicely for this year's all new "Studs on Ice" event.

Headlining this exciting event are more X-Perimental class [bolts or screws in tires] cars than ever before this year!

Last year's overall champ, Constantine Mantopoulas will return with his '89 Audi 90 Quattro, 20 valve turbo, Pro Rally car.

Runner up, Dave Burnham will return again this year in his #48 open wheel FWD unlimted modified, complete with a full areodynamic package and an all-aluminum twin cam Maserati V-6 engine for power.

....Also, Andrew Bayley and Jeremy Butts will bring screamin' X- class cars too. Andrew's got a full house WRX and Jeremy a big honkin' V8 powered RWD 5.0 Liter Mustang GT.

Brendan Norton will also be running in 2WD-X with his Nissan 200SX SE-R, with a home built set of screwed tires.

Lots of Quattros and Subarus too! ;)

Haven't heard from Pennsylvania's Alex Kozik yet, but he ran a home built set of screw tires last year too.

Whats the deal with ice thickness, my Dad (in Clifton Park) said its really warm there right now. Are you gonna update this thread with info about teh Ice?
Snowphun 01-13-2005 11:53 AM

A lot can change in a month regarding the ice and snow cover. This does seem to be a late start, but I think it's a bit too early to panic.
Ice racer 01-13-2005 02:11 PM
Whats the deal with ice thickness, my Dad (in Clifton Park) said its really warm there right now. Are you gonna update this thread with info about teh Ice?
The best bet is to check our ICERACE.COM website for the latest word on whether an event is on. Additionally, anyone on my "Studs on Ice" email list gets updated frequently as the event draws near. If you'd like to be on my "Studs on Ice" email list, send me pm.

We go out and actually drill the lakes ourselves [we don't take anyone's word for anything] to check for the required consistent 12" of ice thickness on the Thursday prior to the event. We usually make the determination whether each week's events are "on" or not sometime on Friday afternoon. Sometimes when it is obvious that there's plenty of ice and there's no big snowstorm in the forecast, we declare a race "on" even earlier in the week. Yes, it's warm today here in the Capital District of NY [and all of the northeast], but we've got a whole month until the event. Besides, temporary warm spells occur every year in January. Tomorrow night the temps will drop like a rock. ;)

Although we schedule our regular weekly races starting the first weekend of January, we rarely ever get our first race off before the third weekend. So at this point, we're not off to a late start. :)

So, I'm trying to decide what group to run in. I've placed in the top 3 for the season at the BMW events I attend (I think twice now), so I'm sort of experienced. I know this is much faster event though, which is why I want to try it out. Every year at the BMW events the course will get fast, I slow down, the Jacksons and everyone else get faster. :)

But, I do have a car loan on this car. Any suggestions Mike?

Any idea on how many cars will be in the "no passing" group #4 and how many will be in Run Group #3?

If I try Group # 3 and decide to put my skirt back on, can I move to Group # 4 during the event?
If I try Group # 3 and decide to put my skirt back on, can I move to Group # 4 during the event?
Yes, you can switch if you'd like. In other words, as they get more confidence, they will want to get out of the no passing group.

Hey Paul, rates were from each hotel's website. I just checked out www.bestwestern.com and there's a rate there for $75 for a single queen non-smoking room. You can get it via www.expedia.com too.

:edit: Would help if I read your post. The rates were for Friday night, but they have a $74 room for Sat. too.
Is there a club discount or somone specific I shold talk to when calling for a hotel reservation? I just called the Best Western in Clifton Park and the cheapest rate was $85? I'm not really worried about $10 difference, but wanted to make sure I had all the required info.

I'm planning to drive up from NH on Saturday morning and stay overnight after the event.

Paul G.
Paul,
No discount that I know of. Tim checked out the prices a couple weeks ago.

My cousin taught me something I never knew about motels last summer. He said they were like buying a new car. The price is completely negotiable. They want your business and will haggle to get it. He proved it to me by calling 8 motels in the Sandusky, Ohio area from his cell phone while we were on the interstate. Whatever price they told him, he calmly asked if they had anything cheaper and that he wasn't looking to spend that much. They typically asked if you have AAA, or something like that. Six out of eight dropped the price $10 to $15 just like that. We found one listing that sounded pretty fleabag, as the rate was only $35. It was next to a truck stop and we wouldn't have stayed there if it was free, but for giggles, he asked for a discount anyway. They said "OK $30".

Hey, look at it this way, you'll be running at an event that should probably cost $75 to $100 for only $35. How's that for a discount? :D
paultg 01-20-2005 08:28 AM

Cool. I forgot that sometimes the prices are cheaper if you book through the website.

My girlfriend told me this after I posted of course (she usually deals with reservations, I drive :) ).

BTW:
It looks like Round Lake is ~220 miles from my place in NH. That's about 3.5 hr drive at an average speed of 60 mph.

Is registration definetly from 8:00 - 10:30 Am? I'm sort of planning on leaving my place around 6AM. I've been to a few events in the past where they close registration early so they can start tech inspection and get the event going.

What time do you think the event will be finished up?

One more:
Do they do tech inspection and if so, will I have a prolbem having luggage and a cooler in the trunk of my car during the event?

paultg 01-20-2005 08:42 AM

Just booked a room with the Hot Tub for $80 via the website. :) Much cheaper than the prices the person at the desk quoted me.

Can't wait for this event. I go to Team Oneil next weekend, and then I can try to undo everything they taught me at this event. :D

Tech will be going on simultaneosly with registration, not after. You might consider leaving a tick earlier.
Also, do they do tech inspection and if so, will I have a prolbem having luggage and a cooler in the trunk of my car during the event?

Paul G.
Yes. What most people do is bring a plastic tarp to put down on the ice and put all of their tools, luggage, etc in the tarp and cover it all up. Otherwise, there's always a pickup truck nearby with an empty bed. There is always a way, just ask. :)

Here's a clip from the rules page:

So, is the trunk considered "inside the car"? ;)

Just messing with ya. I'll bring a rubber maid container or something like that, just like I do for autox events.

Well, it sure ain't outside the car :)

"Studs" event filled in record time!
We are now full at 60 drivers and will no longer be accepting registrations. Thank you to all who have registered with us this year. Our new "track day" format and mandated winter tire rule for this year's event did not hurt car count at all. In fact, we have never had registration fill up this quickly in the past. We are looking forward to giving you all plenty of seat time compared to an all-solo event.

We have assembled an outstanding mix of powerful cars on some great winter and ice racing tires. I am very excited about it. The registration list can be viewed HERE. Subarus filled half the show!

It should be mentioned that all cars should have some sort of tow loop or hooks to enable the plow crews to connect their chain or tow strap to, to facilitate pulling them off of a snow bank if necessary.

Of course none of you guys will need to be pulled from a snowbank right? :D

Ahh... the infamous snowbank-humping TT.
Osgood30 01-27-2005 11:26 AM

Just an FYI for the organizers, Subarus have tow hook on the rear passenger side.

Thanks Alex. :)

But in a pinch, the bumper cover will work too right? :D

In the off chance anyone didn't get the memo, the event has been moved from Round Lake.

Curious what the chances are of this being canceled at Caroga this weekend, since the racing didn't happen last weekend and it hasn't exactly been cold this week...
In the off chance anyone didn't get the memo, the event has been moved from Round Lake.
Yes, this event had been relocated to Caroga Lake, in Caroga Lake, NY. Just in case any of you would like to use Mapquest.com or similar to get directions to our place of registration, Vrooman's Hotel, their address is:

Vrooman's Hotel Inc
Routes 10 & 29A
Caroga Lake, NY 12032

Directions to the lake are also listed at the bottom of THIS page.

Also: I need to know how many of you are seeking to run in the begginer no-passing run group. Virtually no one has stated their intentions in this regard thus far. I officially have just one person who has requested the no passing group. Obviously one person doesn't constitute a run group. Don't reply here, please send your registered name and your reply to me at: [emailprotected]. I am setting up the run groups today, so please reply a.s.a.p.
Curious what the chances are of this being canceled at Caroga this weekend, since the racing didn't happen last weekend and it hasn't exactly been cold this week...
Tim, just got my pc back this morning. It locked up at the worst possible time. In any case, ice doesn't melt that quickly. The reason we didn't race last weekend was because we were booked in at Canadarago Lake for a winter carnival. So we did not race because that lake didn't have enough ice. We could have raced at Caroga. The next obstacle is to wait and see how badly this foot of snow we are suppposed to have tonight can screw up the good conditions on Caroga as I write this. Stay tuned...
TimStevens 02-09-2005 10:13 AM

Ahh, sorry, I must have read the notice on the webpage wrong, I thought it said the races at caroga were cancelled last weekend.
jeisen 02-09-2005 06:06 PM

I am not going now (was only going to spectate anyways) because it is just too far from me at caroga:(
Tensen 02-10-2005 09:06 PM

Hey...I'm from the Tri-State forum, coming up to take photos of the event. planning on coming up friday night...any issues or clearances needed for spectating/photo?

I just want to say that A.M.E.C. is really pleased that you guys had a good time and appreciate the hard work of all of our volunteer workers and club officers this past weekend. We are very proud of our group and the successful event we were able to put on for you all. We thank all of the drivers who came long distances to participate. There were lots of interesting high performance cars there A.M.E.C. doesn't ususally have at their regular weekly events, so it was fun for us too.

The best part was many of you stayed and raced with us on Sunday. That was the icing on the cake.

This year's event sold out two weeks prior to the event date. That was a first. I had regular participants from prior years call me two days before the event and want to register. They were quite surprised that we were already booked two weeks earlier.

Final results are posted HERE.

Photo links HERE with more HERE and even more HERE.

I want to thank all of the participants at this year's event for their great contact-free driving. We had far less tow outs from the snowbanks than ever before. Perhaps my insistence on only allowing true winter tires this year helped in that regard.

Those of you who are hooked on this stuff are invited to come out and race with us every weekend. Keep posting your pics from the event for all to enjoy and we'll see you all again next year.

Mike, as I posted over on the icerace.com site I think you guys put on a great event, the best automotive event I've participated in. Friendly people all the way around, tons of seat time. Thanks again, can I register for next year now? ;)

One question: what's the idea behind plowing the course between sessions? I saw some trucks cleaning up the snow banks but it looked like others were scraping the small amount of snow off the course? I figured the snow would give us more grip?

Paul
Paul, while some snow gives our street tire equipped cars more grip, having 6" of it on the outside of a corner slows us back down. On the other hand a clean track helps the Menard and X-perimental tire cars in a big way. Our plow guys are so conditioned to track plowing between races [for our weekly Menard ice racing tire classes], that I had to ask them not to plow several times during the day and leave some powder out there for us. I did the same on Sunday morning for our wheel to wheel races. I told them: "No plowing before the Street legal classes please!"

I'll bet you've never seen another club where the plows guys plow too much right? :D
