Anyone else into auto neon? part 1

Aken 09-22-2003 02:39 PM

Anyone else into auto neon?
Just wondering if I'm the total odd ball in this forum.

Out of everything I've browsed, no one has been into neon. Just wondering if it's something that's not talked about, or no one likes :D

I've been into it for a long time, and I had a bunch on my old Legacy. I'll have quite a bit more on the new Legacy, but done much more tastefully (last car was kinda rushed a lot, so it's really ghetto in places - two words: duct tape)

So - anyone else as wierd as I am? :alien:
Dr. Morbid 09-22-2003 04:41 PM

I'm not sure if its wierd, but I've noticed that too. I've got a lot of interior lighting done (strobes, glowing heater vents, pin-spots and LED rocker switches) and will be turning attention to the exterior now.
I've done a custom version of the glowing front emblem (stock emblem with the stars, it sure is purty) and might go from its current mellow blue glow to something more "projecting" (wire up a blue xenon bulb behind it) and getting crazy with underbody in the spring. Probably the Varad LED underbody kit, with a lowered car the idea of a thin strip of lights instead of a tube that might be pinched on a curb is appealling. (and they pulse to the tunes) As well as throwing tubes in my hood scoop and roof scoop. A lotta blue lights, thank God for the Optima.

Call me weird but I likes what I got so I'm goin' show it off.
MikalsWRX 09-22-2003 08:57 PM

I was never really into exterior NEON. I liked the stobes and stuff on the inside. Then OUr club got sponsored by Street Glow and Optx for the Movie the fast and furious 2. We got everythin for our cars. Like $1000 each. We never used the Dice or tire valve things or pedals But the under car kit was really nice. I guess anything thats free and for a movie was kool. A friend of mine who is an FBI special agent in NYC was telling me stories about car chases and pulling people over and he mentioned "a car with neon lights... now that's enough probable cause to pull him over!". He was laughing when he said it but it is true, neon lights are illegal in most states.

If you want your car to be impressive to teenage boys, go ahead and light it up.

Dr. Morbid 09-23-2003 04:36 PM

That sentiment can be made of anything done to a car beyond keeping it stock: body mods, HP mods, interior alterations.

It would be sufficent to say that this is an avenue of modification you do not care for and leave it at that. Personal opinion is always appreciated, slanderous leanings are not.
Foxy 09-23-2003 05:10 PM

I am not a big fan of neon lights or LED valve stem caps, windshield washers, or rope lights around the car, etc. I have yet to see a car that looks GOOD with those mods, and plenty that look tacky or worse. I've never seen a WRX or any Impreza driving around with neon lights, but if I did, I'd shake my head and wonder why.

Not being slanderous, just giving my opinion.
Aken 09-23-2003 10:43 PM

I definitely agree with the nozzles and tire stem caps - those are tacky.

But neon lighting can be done well, and I intend to prove that
MAD REX 09-23-2003 11:26 PM

I am embarrassed to say I think the footwell neon glow looks pretty cool :o
SpoolinUp 09-23-2003 11:52 PM

on my last car which was a rsx-s i had 2 red neons in the foot wells to match the all oem red gauges, the tubes couldnt be seen so it was very clean looking. i have been debaiting whether to do it to my wrx or not, if i did it i would match the gauges but i dont think it would look as good as it did on the rsx
MikalsWRX 12-23-2003 10:58 AM

I think the important thing is to hide the bulbs. I hate when Im driving around and see a car with neaons and you can see the tubes all under the car. Tacky. Laters Mikal
sonicblue 12-23-2003 11:30 AM

I think under-body and footwell stuff is cool. Not much for little blips of neon (washer nozzles, little switches, etc....). But, I will say, if you have a whole underbody kit, the rest of the car better be damn good. Neon should make you want to look at a car and see the "good stuff"; you don't want to see neon and turn to see a stock VW Golf or something..........
GC84ever 12-23-2003 11:57 AM

As long as it is done right, I think, neons look good.
myself once i get a bodykit (and radar detector) for my car I think I may purchase a under body kit. i know they are illegal, but they'll be there just for the occasional time to light up for fun. And as one person said before: "it's ok to pay for fun".
Every company is coming out with LEDs. I know Varad, Redeline and StreetGlow have LED models. And I think I'll be going with the StreetGlow Brand since I have heard only heard good things about their Gold Series Neon tubes. So I would assume they put the same care into their LEDs.
wkderf 12-23-2003 05:37 PM

i am personally a big fan of the interior and exterior neon as long as its tasteful and time and consideration are given to the overall look of the install and the car as a whole. i will post pics of my own 04 wrx that has a few neon touches.

i think the best way to do neon IN MY OPINION has some simple steps:

1) the actual neon tube, or the source of the light to be used should not be visible at all, only the light it emits should be seen.

2) the color choice, whatever it is should compliment some part of the interior or exterior. ive been to too many nopi glow shows and seen nothing but clashing colors and rainbows inside of cars. good multi color neon jobs are possible, but hard to come by.

3)the wires for all of this lighting needs to be hidden, organized, and cleanly installed. another part of these shows is the quality of the install and there are alot of cool lighing jobs out there that are on the verge of a full blown fire trap inside of the car. and a multi cigarette lighter adapter is not the answer! cut the plug off and install a switch panel somewhere and use the switches to control the light. it will be easier to organize the wires, and much easier to control each light or groups of them together.

4) dont over do it! having a million tubes of neon and LEDs everywhere can be too much and take away from the whole car. the best contest winning neon installs ive seen have had 1/2 of the amount of neon as cars in 4th place and below.

5) lastly in my humble opinion: any neon that "flashes to the music" is pointless unless you are doing a system demonstration in front of judges. and even then, they arent that impressed by it.
if you want your car to look like a nightclub, get a disco ball and have fun.
MikalsWRX 12-23-2003 07:56 PM

well said WKderf. I also like strobes in the inside of the amplifiers. That looked good and in the vents. But I only used them for Hot importnights and night shows. laters Mikal

Bah!
If my Legacy had neon it would'nt last one stage!
paul25RS 12-23-2003 08:46 PM

A lot of people on the forums have huge things against neons for some reasons. I bet some people are reading this thread and grinding their teeth but choosing not to reply. Im surprised there hasnt been too many negative comments =] . I think neons give that extra "umph" in style and should only be used as an EXTRA bling. Slapping Neons on a stock car to me is like saying "hey everyone look at my stock car". =] . Otherwise, i think neons look nice. I've installed them on a lancer and a vw golf(pain in the ASS!!!). I probably wont put them on my car until i've done a few more mods.
Imprza 12-23-2003 10:15 PM

I like neon. Interior not so much as some good ol' neon under the body kit neon is the best IMO.
Yanos 12-23-2003 11:00 PM

If it does not make your car faster, it is not cool.
Imprza 12-23-2003 11:08 PM

Oh that's kind of a dumb way to look at it but I guess it's your opinion. I don't think neon is as popular on Subaru's but they lopok nice on Honda's and Nissan's etc.

Ahzlon 12-24-2003 12:30 AM

for all of you that think that auto neon is bad... driving home tonight i saw a freekin SNOWMOBILE with neon... i was appaled.. it was gross
NimrodBoz 12-24-2003 12:40 AM

im not a fan of neon but i can see it being tasteful with a careful eye and in small measure. strobes inside your car?! while driving?! thats just plain dumb. think about what strobing lights do to your eyes....then consider driving at night. your eyes will be struggling to adapt and your vision will plummet. good way to scatter that neon all over the road and the car in front of you that you couldnt see through the disco world that was your interior.
Kostamojen 12-24-2003 02:10 AM

Probably cause its illegal in most states. That and really really really tacky...
Subie2.5RS2003 12-24-2003 02:14 AM

i like it personally but i like it in a taste full way, you have a black car get like white underglow, not like pink or something that matchs sooo horribly that its ugly ... a kid in my neighborhood has a 2001 Acura TL in Silver with like lime green underglow ... it is nasty!!!!
MikalsWRX 12-24-2003 10:36 AM

So Yanos if it doesnt make your car faster its dumb? Well I hope you dont have an intake, that really doesnt do much. I hope you got rid of your seats, that definatley doesnt make you go fast, lets see, the radio, floor mats, headlights, tailights, antenna, review mirror, wipers, I know theres more. laters Mikal
MikalsWRX 12-24-2003 10:40 AM

Were you talking about me with the strobes inside? I wasnt talking about while you were driving, did I say that ? I said for shows like a HIN. And if you would have seen my car Im sure you wouldnt have said tacky,The tackyness helped me win 2nd and 3 rd at Hot import nights two years in a row for best use of neon and strobes. So $300 for being tacky is not bad :-) Plus it was all free stuff. Plus I get to go in there booth at all the shows there in for free :-) but hey thats your oipinion. and thats kool. Laters Mikal

I think neons can be a way to add a little bit of extra style to a trunk or inside of a car as well. I am personally thinking about an led underbody kit for my silver 02 wrx. I have been into neon and led "accenting", trying different things and seeing how they worked. This is my last work in progress.........showing off the subs:)

The really hard part is that the puppies really, seriously think that they are just way, way too cool....and then in 6 months you start seeing all this bling-bling bullsiht in the FS forum....just to be snapped up by the n00b(er) puppies...

There really should be a n00b forum to put them all in untill they get over at least some of it...

not to bash on the "veterans" but what we have here is a simple difference in opinions.

some people like neon, some dont.

some people believe cold air intakes work, some dont.

some people like loud blow off valves, some dont.

some people like giant spoilers, some dont.

alot of the veterans seem to think that liking neon, loud blow off valves, and bold body styling is some sort of nooby plague that needs to be cured, and if it isnt, it may taint the opinions of others on the site. they are simply stating their opinions, just as you are. the simple fact of the matter is that you dont like their opinion. well, they may not like yours.

TO EACH, HIS OWN.

and the simple fact that someone is new to the site means nothing about their tastes, and just because someone is new to the site, that in no way means that they are new to cars or performance, or styling.

also remember: everybody was a noob at some point. even all of the opinionated veterans.

Taste in cars is like taste in music. Just because I think hip hop is better than rock doesnt make it true.

Just because you think that underbody lights are tacky does not make this true either.

There is a distinct difference between fact and opinion. I trust that you guys know the difference.

to each's own.. But i'm not adding crap to my car that isn't remotely functional.
paul25RS 12-26-2003 10:22 AM

whats the purpose of having nice looking rims? :p

I didnt even know what my rims looked like when I bought 'em...the guy on the phone said lighter than stock and forged and correct offset and 17"...and I said ship 'em.

I think it's tacky and dumb, that's my opinion. I think a car with stickers on it that's not getting paid by sponsors to have said stickers is also tacky and dumb. I also think Hot Import Nights and similar "Import" car shows are also dumb. There are sometimes some nice cars at them but 90% of it is just guys with bolt on body kits and lights and stickers, who wants to see that crap?

I think it's better to be fast than to look fast. That's the general Subaru community mentality and we don't want to see Subarus succomb to the Fast and the Furious mentality.

I've been to HIN shows, as well as many of my friends. All in all though, you hit the nail on the head. At an import car show it's very easy to sort the "dumb" people from the people just there to see the "dumb" people. ;)
