Black Interior + Red Lights + HOW TO *pics* part 1

Black Interior + Red Lights + HOW TO *pics*
hey guys n gals. ive been redoing my interior with a very limited budget.
Ill make this a HOW-TO since i use them alot for my own mods.
---disclaimer: im not responsible for you messing up your car, etc, etc, etc. PM me with a question though, or post on here and i should respond---

PAINTING RADIO TRIM
First off, i painted the center console pieces around the radio and the vent rings black. For this I used "Rustoleum Specialty Textured Paint For Plastic " about $4.97 at home depot.
This gave the pieces a flat, textured, almost stock look.

1) First pop open cup holder and remove the 2 screws behind it. Pull it completely out.
2) Reach up and pull the upper vents straight out from the dash. Unclip the wire harness from behind the hazard button. Unscrew the two small screws holding the vents to the silver trim piece. The hazard button can also be removed from the vent piece by squeezing in the tabs.
3) Reach down behind the main radio silver trim piece and pull straight out from the dash. There are 6 triangular clips which go straight into the dash, so you have to slide your hand behind it and go downwars while pulling out. Its a PITA, but just pull firmly and with confidence!! and itll pop right off.
4) Clean each silver piece with some water and soap to get off all the dust and any dirt. Let dry fully!
5) PAINTING: just shake up the can really well and use even movements across the pieces. I found that holding the can at one end and moving a full stroke across the piece with steady paint spray works ok. Dont go back and forth over the piece because there will be extra paint where you stop and move the other way.
I did 2 coats of this paint and got a great result. Im still a n00b spray painter

PICS: did the console with the textured paint

RED Lights for Radio/HVAC/Clock/Keyring
since you already have all this stuff out, you can change these colors to red, blue, whatever color bulb condoms ("lamp covers") you buy from partsexpress.com. I chose red to match my future STi cluster.
Ill just link to other writeups on the color changes and part order websites.

-Buy bulb condoms at www.partsexpress.com by searching for "lamp covers"
You will need the 0.2" size and the 0.12" size. I bought 20 of each size and had extra.

PAINTING A,B,C-PILLAR TRIM

I also painted my A-pillar plastic trim piece black because the stupid beige pillars and headliner dont match a dang thing on the car. For this i used the same:
"Rustoleum Specialty Textured Paint for Plastic" ($4.97 at Home Depot)

The pillar is easy to pop off, but harder to get back on (YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED) :)
1) Put your fingers behind the top most section, grabbing it from the windshield part, not the headliner part. Just pull toward your face (as you sit in the seat) and it will pop off from the pillar. There are 3 rivet things that stick it into the metal pilar to attach. They are evenly spaced along the back so pop each out and pull the thing upwards at the bottom part.
2) Clean them off with water and let them dry.
3) Shake the can up very well and apply paint in steady motions with proper coverage and amount so no beige shows through.
4) After they dry for a long time (6+ hours) you can reinstall them.
5) Slip the bottom pointy part into the slot in the dash and push it all the way down so it lines up. Then push in to get the 3 clips to fasten it to the pillar. It is hard, keep trying, and dont break the thing..
I used two coats and got a pretty damn good result. When you hold the piece up to the dash board, it is almost identical to the color and texture of the dash. sweet huh. The pics show some weird textures because the paint reflects the flash differently than the dash.

Same method applies for B & C pillars, but you have to remove the seat belts at the shoulders.
You can see the B and C pillars here:

Interesting... I would like it better if the black wasn't so much darker than the dash board black... needs to be just a hint lighter, and I think you're right about flat black looking better...
DLUX WRX 01-03-2006 04:06 AM

hmmm... that doesn't look that bad.
good job.

as for taking thoes things apart i think you have to pry the covers off and you'll find the bolt that holds them on to the car. before you do that though you have to remove the lower b pillar panel and remove the rear seat for the c pillar panel.
eboarder2020 01-03-2006 12:37 PM

Looks nice man. I think I found my next DIY mod. Thanks !

thanks, ill check this out and update when i get off the B and C pillars for painting. I think ill re-do the radio trim in flat black as well. :)

I Used krylon Flat back and it came out matching better.

It's best to use a fine sandpaper to scuff up the smoothness of the bezels. I wish I did, it would have made the job easier.

When you clean the bezels use isopropyl alcohol and lintless cloth if available or paper towels.

(edit)

Also, mask off the Hazard button.

Side note. your turn signals won't work without the hazard button connected.
MarylandEcstasy 01-03-2006 02:19 PM

I painted my center console Aspen White to match my exterior. Went very well and I have an EQ and Alpine head unit, and I'm a perfectionist, but I may redo it because there's a few dings and such around it. Silly me

Duplicolor bumper paint. (after this pic, i sprayed the cupholder with 2 more coats to match eveything else)

i also dis-assembled my Alpine faceplate & painted it black.

Does anyone know wherelse I can get those lamp covers other then the ones from partsexpress.com? Im looking for some white ones however they dont seem to have em.
MarylandEcstasy 01-04-2006 11:26 AM

Ooh, white would be nice. Good choice. Yeah , partsexpress doesnt carry those and theres rare chance you'll find the right size white bulb condoms out there. I suggest just painting over the existing bulbs with some stained glass paint at a local craft store, (its been done before) or just buy brighter bulbs, maybe LED bulbs, damn I knew the size too but I forget..they sell the bulbs at Pep Boys.
MarylandEcstasy 01-04-2006 11:26 AM
I second that and I'd love to see it!
I'll get those pics up pronto. Currently fixing a scratch I made on the console last night
eboarder2020 01-04-2006 11:53 AM

What size bulbs, and if i dont do that, and I did decide to paint them what type paint should I use?

looks quite nice
0BlueSTi4 01-05-2006 03:09 AM

Looks very clean! I hope that paint doesnt scratch as easily as the one I painted my old computer case with.

Does anyone have brushed aluminum dash kit? I have seen a few out there for sale but no pics of what it would look like in an STi.

Thanx... I went shoping around today and asked the people at wallmart and they said not to paint the bulb with just "any" type of paint. He said that the bulb would get way to hot for the paint to stay. Is this myth or fact?
MarylandEcstasy 01-05-2006 10:08 AM

You know what you're right, I'm forgetting that detail. Truth is when I put the bulb condoms on my bulbs, by the time I had the lights illuminated for a couple minutes, they'd begin to stick.

When I took the stock green bulb condoms off, I could not pull them off, instead peel them off with tweezers. It may melt, the paint..the best choice is to find some LED bulbs of that size.
WRXDriftR 01-05-2006 01:44 PM

yea, i had to slice the green covers off my lights becuase they were stuck to the bulb so badly.

You can't get white light by adding pigment.
WRXDriftR 01-06-2006 01:04 AM

those super white, ultra white, platinum, etc headlight bulbs achieve a whiter light than normal halogen bulbs because they use a blueish pigment on the bulb. You can see the blue when you look at them. Maybe using some very light blue on the stock bulb will make it whiter.

^THATS JUST A WILD GUESS!
lawn boy 01-06-2006 03:39 PM

nice pics. im getting my b and c pillars painted professionally this spring. i alreayd have CF replacement A pillars and I'm reskinning the headliner/sun visors in black suede. :D
mattpreet1 01-06-2006 04:26 PM

I've been thinking about going white as well, but hoping to go the L.E.D. route. Only thing I'm wondering is can you replace the bulbs in the head unit or only cover them? Unfortunately, I couldn't find which size to buy so hopefully someone figures it out. The painted dash mod looks great though guys, and I'll have to do that in flat black at the same time!
lovemyrex 01-06-2006 06:12 PM

I got my bulb condoms at autozone, They have them in packs of 5 , And they have 3 sizes
WRXDriftR 01-09-2006 08:59 PM

redid my center trim in textured black today. i love the resuslts more than the gloss. (pics in 1st post)
Quack 01-09-2006 09:44 PM

much better :)
sweetrex 01-09-2006 11:39 PM

Can this be done to the tach/speedo? Does anyone have a link with directions or info?

Im thinking of going with blue and red to match my kenwood excelon deck.
LastResort 01-10-2006 12:18 AM

Ok, I'll bite: How did you change the clock? I can't seem to find much about that mod.
WRXDriftR 01-10-2006 11:51 AM

AHAHA! i was waiting for a question about the clock b/c i didnt include it in my writeup.

Well this took about 4 tries to get correct, but WARNING: its pretty dim and almost invisible in direct sunlight. but at night it looks fine.

1) Pop the clock pod out of the dash by removing the top air vents and pushing up from below.
2) Unclip clock power supply.
3) Carefully bend the prong behind the clock labeled LIG. Bend this down flat so it doenst contact when you plug the clock back in. This will keep the clock on BRIGHT mode all the time.
4) Remove the clock from the pod from the clips on the side.
5) Now you have to remove the clock cover from the clock circuit board stuff. Do this by prying up the 2 clips on top and 2 clips on bottom and separating.
6) Here, i used a piece of scotch tape, the frost kind which isnt transparent. I put this directly onto the circuit of the clock. Then i went over it with a red marker (calligraphy marker is what i had). Did a couple layers allowing to dry to get a dark red. This is still not enough to get a really good red color. soo..
7) Then color the inside of the clock cover with the same marker. I held the cover up to the light and you can see how its tinted green. So i just colored right onto the cover with the marker a few times and it seems to work fine after i reassembled it.
8) Put back together reverse order, and back into car. Test in dark before you fully reassemble it.

changing colors on the center gauge cluster (speedo, tach etc) is entirely different:

nicely done guys.but instead on painting my a pillar with a spray can i put a black suede..i'll post some pic's later..im still thing about painting the trim or just leave it alone..even though i have another spare..
tairese 05-01-2006 06:27 PM

before spraypainting, do you have to sand the old finish down? or just spray on top?

also: do you need primer?
before spraypainting, do you have to sand the old finish down? or just spray on top?

from other tutorials i've read on here, you just clean everything really well, spray with a grey primer, then just spray some flat black on. I have duplicolor flat black laquer and grey primer im about to spray on today, i'll let you know how it goes

is my info correct or ??
InfamousDX 05-26-2006 04:16 PM

you don't necessarily NEED primer. sanding and cleaning are important though.
Tang 06 i wagon 05-26-2006 05:15 PM

I just like saying "bulb condom."

Bulb condom, bulb condom, bulb condom.
mtbiac 05-26-2006 10:36 PM

actually i just did mine, used grey "sandable" auto primer from duplicolor and the flat black duplicor lacquer also. got it all at autozone. Did 2 coats primer, 3 coats black, and i cleaned it all with isopropyl alcohol beforehand. Came out really well :)

gonna install em later tonight if it stops raining ever (!!) and maybe i'll snap a few pics tmrw. no sanding was needed. I read a few other tutorials on here, as mentioned above, that actually warned against sanding and removing the old paint for certain reasons... i'd agree....and it's definately not even needed

good luck
ender87i 05-26-2006 10:49 PM

i might have to do this tonight

THE MAGNUM BULB CONDOM for me thanks.
badtaste 06-23-2006 05:36 PM

nice ill do that after i have seats and carpet redone
crmcodeman 06-23-2006 07:59 PM

ok i have it sanded cause when i painted it. it did look good at all now shold i spray it with sandable primer then sand and spray the color... or just spray the color over the bare plastic
njskatchmo 06-23-2006 08:56 PM

spray your little heart out with paint. primer is always a good idea.
WRXDriftR 06-23-2006 10:08 PM

wow. i just wiped the dash pieces clean, and used the Rustoleum paint I described in Post #1. It came out great. No primer, no sanding... just sprayed right onto it.

Maybe a gloss paint will come out worse without sanding, but the textured paint works absolute wonders!

edit: YAY my thread made it to page2 :lol:
crmcodeman 06-23-2006 10:55 PM

yeah i used a glossy paint but didnt look good so i figure i would sand it down an see if it looked better if that doesnt work i will get the paint you used

  MAGNUM XXL BULB CONDOM for that snug fit for me.
rsalicrup 06-23-2006 11:54 PM

I found out if you wet sand it with a very thin paper (1000 or 2000 grit) you don't even have to paint it. It comes out perfect. Of course you have to sand for ever but it comes out scratch free. I had to find out to late when I already use a 800 grit paper.
Capt Crunch 06-24-2006 10:13 AM

what bulb condoms do you need just to do the HVAC?

thats pretty interesting! im assuming the plastic is black under the silver paint?? pics of the final product?
rsalicrup 06-24-2006 02:13 PM

I end up painting it because I found out to late on the process. I started with 800 grit when I found out that it was a nice shade of dark dark gray (almost black) under it. I still have to do my vents so I will start it off with the 2000 wet sandpaper and post pics.
rsalicrup 06-24-2006 04:42 PM

here is the vents just sanded down to it bare color. I use 2000 grit wet sandpaper. The first pic is the process and the second pic is the finish product after polishing with plastic polish. You can use Meguars Scratch X but it comes out with a high gloss. Also the trick to sand this down is o use lots of water. Silver is a bad color to sand down to a smooth surface. Silver is a metalic color so it has small metal flakes in it. This will scratch the surface even more, so just keep it in the water and use a little bit od dish soap. Yes I build scale models.
