Uber lightweight wheels part 1

itmcomputersdotcom 11-28-2006 01:14 AM

Uber lightweight wheels
I'm looking to find out who makes either titanium, or magnesium wheels in 17", however if I have to settle for aluminum or some other alloy, who makes the lightest wheels around?

Branden
DiscoWagon 11-28-2006 01:16 AM

Rays.

The lightest wheels (that are still affordable) are definitely SSR. Rays / Volk sticks some of their name into the price and aren't as light as an SSR in the same price range and size. SSR Type C is under 14lbs and is cheaper than the TE-37 which is almost 16lbs.

Your most affordable option in a price / weight ratio is the Enkei RPF-1 or Motegi Traklite. Of course the Motegi's seem to be on an endless backorder. RPF-1 is 15.6lbs in a 17x8 and the traklite is 14.5lbs in a 17x8. Both are around $1000 for a set.

SSR Type C : 17x8, 13lbs, $400ea
Enkei RPF-1: 17x8, 15.6lbs, $230ea
Motegi Traklite: 17x8, 14.5lbs, $270ea
Volk TE-37: 17x8, 16lbs, $475ea

What about the Kosei K1's? I know a bunch of BMW and yata' drivers run them.
Scooby South 11-28-2006 10:56 AM

we kinda need to know what your going to do with them....

As different wheels could represent different things....
But all the suggestions are good....

you can get a custom set of BBS's that are low in weight also...;)

ULLLOSE 11-28-2006 10:59 AM

Just an fyi... The weight on the new 17+ SSR comp has gone up, [emailprotected] says this is why:

"The only difference is in 17" and larger sizes. Those wheels are now a 2 piece wheel, SSF Center with Fully forged Barrel welded together. This is exactly how the Solstice SSR wheels are made. Lots of the smaller SSR Type C and Type C-RS wheels are still made the old way, (1-piece SSF), which is extremely light.

The only reason they switched to the 2-piece welded wheels was the fact that more often then not the 17" and larger wheels (as well as the very wide wheels) would not come out of the SSF process correctly and would have to scrapped. The byproduct of the new Hybrid process was a more consistant wheel that was dramatically stronger with a small weight increase, (1.5-2.5lbs avg)."

The original poster is Branden Burkhart - STU Nat'l champ for the last 2 years. It's a safe bet that he's looking for new racing wheels as he was on his stock 17x7.5" BBS wheels this past season.

Element Tuning 11-28-2006 04:39 PM

Prodrive GC060 or GC010 are extremely light and strong forged wheels. We run them on our car in a 17x9.5 and 18x9.5. I believe these wheels are manufactured by Rays. I've had some off road excursions if you know what I mean and they are still as good as new.

Thanks,

Besides which, if you want to go with a 17x7, the Kosei K1-TS at $199/each for a 14.6 lb wheel is a better deal than those. That's definitely too narrow for an STU STi, though.
kellygnsd 11-29-2006 04:14 AM

Racing Hart CP-035R are very light. The 35R is 13.6 lbs. in 17X8 size. Buddy Club P1 QF is a pretty light one too. 17X7.5 is 12.9 lbs and 17X9 is 14.6lbs

IIRC they do make a 17x9 wheel
IIRC they do make a 17x9 wheel
They do, Tire Rack sells a 17x9 e45 that they claim weighs about 16lbs, but I think the original poster is looking for something about 2lbs lighter ( in a 17x9 ) since he's willing to consider magnesium and other exotic materials.

Tire Rack doesn't sell the K1-TS as a 'known to fit the STi' wheel if you use their little tire-fittment 'guide' thing, but I've seen them installed on an 05 STi ( user AtomicRacer has them ) and they looked perfect. I am considering getting a set even if I can ever get off my duff and put the order in

The Dymag carbon fiber wheels use a magnesium center, and they are the lightest thing out there. They are optional on the Koenigsegg CCX. They run about $2000 each.

So there you go.

As a base for comparison. Anyone have the weights for the stock Scooby paws?

Say: 04> BBS, 05< BBS, and whatever the lightest stock wheels for the WRX's or Legacys?

I've been reading a lot of race car engineering books lately. Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams has a good chapter dedicated to "rotating inertia" that shows how to mathmaticly figure out what kind of effect different weights have on acceleration. I bought it at Borders for $18.00.

Edit: Stock 05-06 STi wheels are 19.2lbs according to the link in post #30. Scooby South was right... it is a great resource.
the_great_blah 12-10-2006 02:56 AM

Some engineering club on campus here at WWU made a carbon fibre wheel prototype for their race car. Problem is, the quality is too poor for actual use.

jweiss 12-10-2006 11:15 AM

Hi -

As was already mentioned, BBS Motorsport offers lightweight 3-piece wheels with magnesium or aluminum centers, in just about any size/offset.

Other options in 3-piece custom racing wheels:

Fikse (aluminum centers, but my 17x9s are about 17 lbs each)
Jongbloed (they offer both magnesium and aluminum centers)
Kinesis (aluminum centers)

Expect to pay at least $3k for a set, probably closer to $4k, unless you are on good terms with a distributor. BBS Motorsport wheels will cost more...

Cheers,

Jeff
