CF splitter *bling* finally installed; now version 2

(now with version 2 pix in post 36)
It took me a lot longer than I'd originally anticipated, but today I finally wrapped up a project to fit an ARP carbon fiber splitter to my STi.
This splitter is made for earlier WRX, so it took considerable fabrication to get it mounted. The adjustment turnbuckles that came with the unit are for show only, and I wanted a functional angle of attack, so I made up adjusters that are a lot beefier.
Undermounting is to a fabricated plate and there is some additional aluminum cross bracing for stability. The entire splitter comes off with eight bolts (including adjusters) and I don't intend to use it much on the street... it's mainly for track days.

it's a nice piece, but maybe you should cut it a bit to make it fit better and smaller... and it'll probably help alot when you park :)
| slickrex | 11-23-2006 06:17 PM |
probably one of the ugliest things i've ever seen... take it off
| Psybin | 11-23-2006 06:21 PM |
Better make sure you are the only person to park that, or a curb is going to eat it.
| FigNuts | 11-23-2006 06:21 PM |
Nice work, not my style, but nice work. Personally, i'd make it the width of the bumper skin and have it stick out in front of the bumper skin by no more than an inch.
| carl s. | 11-23-2006 06:23 PM |
seems really large. if it's useful at the track, that's all that matters
| WRXDriftR | 11-23-2006 06:30 PM |
at least paint the turnbuckels BLACK or something so they dont show up so much. Thank goodness its only for track days though, its too much for a streetcar

My thoughts exactly. That is absolutely horrendous.
I give it 2 days before someone steps on it or runs into it on accident and ruins it.
Congratulations on completely ruining the look of your car.
Is this the next step in your process?

^^ if you reverse in a spot, someone will eventually step on it, either accidentally or purposely. Looks okay to me, but the supports makes it looks really tacky.
| jimtweet | 11-23-2006 08:58 PM |
man please take that thing off,
i used to have one on my car, either take it off, or push it back so it only sticks out like 2 inchs and not 4 feet...and those bars are way to big and tacky

While its not my style either, I do like that it doesn't look like every other WRX on the street (which if you listened to this clowns it would). Plus, its functional, and that makes it acceptable in my book.

paint the rods black, looks like the car has a nose bleed
| veightkiller | 11-23-2006 11:45 PM |
it sticks out way too much imo.
| gregr01 | 11-24-2006 12:11 AM |
I will be painting the adjusters. Since I'm not limited by any class rules, the size is where it needs to be for function, both depth (how far it sticks out, which is a bit deceptive in the pix; four inches) and width. The difference in steering can be felt even at freeway+ speeds, but I'll have to wait until the next track day for high speed cornering & stability.
Each to their own!

I dont like it personally, but if its meant for trackdays, then its cool. A splitter is really for racing, not so much for show anyway
| wgknestrick | 11-24-2006 03:44 PM |
Why did you mount it so far forward? I have this on my car but mounted it flush with the front fender well. Mine looks badass and flows well with the car. You will rip your front bumper clean off mounting it like that.
Yours.....as others said.

Be careful on the track with that splitter, without a corresponding increase in downforce in the rear, your car will likely be pretty loose at speed.
| GC_Anthony | 11-26-2006 02:30 AM |
Function>form. Who cares how pretty it is, some of the ugliest cars ive seen have been the fastest.

not feeling it...
| sperry7 | 11-26-2006 04:50 PM |
yeah like the guy on page 1 it kinda looks like you might have it mounted wrong. I know there isn't a "Right" way to mount it bc it is for the older models as you said...but honeslty that thing does look far out.
| HemiKLR | 11-26-2006 05:00 PM |
no offense man but that piece doesn't even fit your car... plus it looks borderline hidious. I would really take a few of these peoples advise and either cut the living hell out of that thing so its actually fitting and looks decent or just take it off. Yes, while it is functional (at least above speeds of 70mph IF ANGLED CORRECTLY) you will be losing gas milage and people are going to bag on it. Make sure it is angled correctly or you will actually be causing your car to have even less downforce. The wing is there for a reason, but that air splitter if angled correctly (when it fits) will help. The thing is, that air splitter is about 3-4 inches too wide on each side and I can't really see how far it stickes out. Whoever sold that to you should be shot, it kinda looks like an ebay special so the cf will prolly start to look like ish in a month or two. Best of luck with the rest of your mods and I hope you see the desired downforce your looking for.

Oh yeah, I like your article too. Sounds like the STi sucked you in like the rest of us.

Ya I ment Firebird. I was not talking about PKRA?? That bondurant track is nothing to talk about at all. Drove my car and rode my Gixxer there, I also went to the Autox that they set up in the parking lot to :o. those tracks are good for bone stock cars and people who dont know anyting about track driving. When you finally get on a real track like Laguna Seca for some SCCA, or the Streets of Willow track you will see what Im talking about.
PS. In your pics your behind a BMW and what looks to be an Integra or Mazda??? For the love of god I hpoe you passed them.

If it's a functional thing for track days, I'd put it on for those, but leave it off for daily driving - catch a curb with that and your bumper is going to be a mess...

Yes, I passed the Acura. And the M3, though that's not shown in this 2-lap segment.
And the splitter stays. It's my car, and I like it.
At least until it gets munged by some piece of crap that always seems to be strewn about the PHX freeway system. :furious:

amen.
form follows function. I think it's a great fab job. Who cares what it looks like.
You DO have to pimp the rear downforce, otherwise you might be unstable at speed (agreeing with...someone from page 2).
I wouldn't keep it on all the time though...only for track. There's quite the potential for damage, and you wouldn't wanna waste your hard work.
