Looks like congrats are in order for Corey. We bailed as soon as we found out that Jen didn't make the challenge so we could do the 7 hour drive home, Buckley was 37th qualifier and made it into the challenge and Jen was sitting 39th for the Super Challenge. STX was a fun this weekend, and even though she beat me I couldn't be happier that Jen was running times that had her at the top of the class. I'd have loved to see what would have happened in the dry and I'd hate to have to run against Billy if it's wet all three sessions. Still have no clue how the heck he can run a 34.4 in the rain when top dry time was a 32.7.

All in all I thought it was a great event even though I didn't get a chance to get a left side run that I needed this morning. Gotta work on that whole get it done in the early runs thing. Dropping 9.3 seconds on the right course during Saturday afternoon runs is kind of nice though. Sucking in the morning and having to stand on a 4 cone run isn't. DC region did a great job and surprisingly, especially with the rain today, timing ran very well at least up until we left. Considering it rained hard enough that the 60' light on the right side literally floated away I'm truly stunned that all went mostly right today. The equipment is getting better all the time and the national staff works their butts off to try to make it run as smoothly as possible. After Ralph found the 60' light, which he only found by pulling on the cable since it was no where near where it was supposed to be, he set it back up and it worked on the very next start. Pretty amazing. We did lose the shot clock and the pre-stage light on the left side but the tree still worked and even with the rain I don't think there were more than 6 re-runs this morning.

DC region throws a good event and that lot is a whole new ballgame with the camber of the hill thrown into the mix. This was our first time to DC for any event but if they throw a Pro next year we'll definitely be back. It was great to meet a lot of the guys who we read on the board and were newbies to ProSolo and I hope you're hooked now and will be doing more events next year.

<originally in roll call thread>

That was a ****ing blast. On Friday I was trying to figure out what on earth I had signed up for, but Saturday made up for it quickly. Sunday was fun too, although I really really wanted 4 more dry cracks at that course.

I'll post some video when I get a chance.

It was good meeting everyone (I'm not going to try to list names) and I hope everyone had a safe trip back home.

Yeah, I can see myself travelling to do more of these next year. Holy crackpipe. I would just have to figure out the whole Kansas scheduling thing and the whole getting a Subaru to Kansas thing. (Otherwise I will probably just hang back and make sure there are plenty of spots for the folks who can actually do the Finale)

It was great to finally turn a bunch of screen names into faces. Good times :)

john

p.s. re: rain... According to my rough Excel chart of the rain-only times, if it was only Sunday, Billy would have won by almost 2 seconds... neat trick!
CamaroFS34 06-25-2006 11:06 PM

I do not like rain. Well, I don't like rain when I am running on 315 V710s.....

But, I still had fun in teh Stompy. :)

Nice driving, Jen. Good seeing you out at a ProSolo, John! I know I met some other new people too, and like John, I should avoid naming names, so I don't forget anyone. ;)

wow! first prosolo and i loved it! congrats to cory and everyone that trophied!

somehow i managed to pull out the bonus challenge win, and a 3rd in STU. i finished .2 seconds behind dave heinrich (aka moton boy) and dave m. was only .3 behind me... it doesn't get much closer than that! mike was flying on the left hand course.. awesome driving. if it had only rained on saturday.

it was great meeting all of you.. the wingless white wrx (sorry forgot your name) really put the pressure on me during the bonus challenge finals.. i could've sworn you had me beat with the .7 second lead after the first run.

many thanks to the dc region and scca for putting on an awesome event

This post is a little bit self serving, but congratulations to Jonathan Roberts for the AS win in my '05 STi. I bought the car a month ago new (was still sitting on a lot, go figure). Last week we moved my Addco front bar and Ti cat-back from my '04 to the '05 and mounted some 275 A6's on a set of stock rims. Add 3mm spacers and align and voila! AS winner! :) Oh yeah, put a national champ behind the wheel. Yeah, that part is somewhat important, too.

I knew he had a great shot if it rained the entire event out, but I honestly wanted to know if the car was competitive in class in the dry, so I was happy Saturday was dry. That was a really tough AS field, too, so it looks like the car is capable in ProSolo and should be at least a solid trophy candidate a Tours/Nationals. A certain board member here should be working on some Koni DAs for it right now, so hopefully we can get it even better. I may be able to have it at Wendover for the Pro there and should definitely have it at the Finale and Nationals, most likely with Jonathan behind the wheel at those (and me at Wendover and *maybe* Nationals, I don't know yet).

Now if I could only have half the success as a driver I've had as car owner. ;)

Definitely cool to see a Subaru running at the top of AS. Keep that stuff up and you'll hear people talking about a Subaru/SCCA conspiracy to make the Subaru top of too many classes.

For those who were there for the challenge how far did Greg make it in his STX car? I know Randy redlit out in the second round after taking out the GT3 in the first round.

Follow up based on indexed results: http://sccaforums.com/forums/storage/16/199245/DC%20Pro%20Index.Final.pdf

Jen would have won L2 by .250 on the index this weekend if she hadn't choosen to run open and beat up on the boys. Kind of wishing we had the money for that part of things to pay for the trip but still glad to see her running times that are at the top of open.
mccanixx 06-26-2006 07:45 AM

I made it to fourth. I had a 1.2 second lead over Corey after the first run. I ran the right side first. So I thought I'd get a good light and drive the left course at about 8/10ths, apparently Corey decided to drive the right course at 12/10ths. So hats off Corey you deserved it, well done. I was driving good though, I just shot myself in the foot with that one, live and learn. I thought I was going to pass out waiting for the challenge to start, I need to remember to eat.

I could have used the money though, my vans tranny blew up about 40 miles from home. Took the car off the trailer, and drove it in. :furious: :( Now how to get to milwaukee this weekend.

Phil, I have your air tank. P.M. me an address and I'll ups it to you. It's my fault anyway.

The event was awesome, well run, and great courses. Flat-footin' baby.
PhilC 06-26-2006 07:56 AM

Sorry to hear about the van Greg, better the van's tranny than the WRX's though as I'd bet plenty that the van's tranny is a lot cheaper to source. I had completely forgotten about the air-tank until you just mentioned it. I had simply packed up everything by our truck and headed out to get food and had forgotten that our tank made it over to grid during the rain.

I think you'll get $200 in Honda Street money for your placing, that will at least cover part of your hotel expense for the weekend.
crystalhelix 06-26-2006 08:29 AM

one of our local's did well in STX, Randy P from teh steel cities region congrats! for the last 2 years he competed in a stock S2K and to switch to AWD modded suby and do so well this year speaks to his mad skillz...

...sounds like it was a fun event except for the rain!

Never slow down in the challenge rounds... ever! :) Before they had the cone and out rule, I've seen people carrying a cone, and winning because the person ahead slowed down TOO much. :)

Yep, it's all a learning experience. :D

Yeah, it was a blast for sure. I'm totally addicted to Pro's now. We had a great battle in STU. I'm looking forward to battling with these guys at nationals. More tuning on the car to do and a LOT more tuning of the nut behind the wheel. Myles from Racecomp Engineering stopped out to watch a bit on Sunday and take some pictures. It was nice to be able to put a face and personality to the screen names we see so often here in the motorsports forums.

It was great seeing everyone. Enjoyed the event, just had a little tuff luck. Morning shift I was in second place, about .6 off of first with third only a tenth off my time and fourth close behind. Everything seemed to be going well, but when the sun came out I knew it would be the afternoon runs that would determine the class.

On my first run in the afternoon, I experience what felt like fuel cutoff. The car shuts down for about half a second then picks back up. It did this a couple times on both courses on all runs. My guage was indicating a quarter of tank of gas. Has anyone experienced this with this much fuel? Any other ideas if not a fuel pick up problem?

After the second heat I went to dead last. Even though I improved my times with the car cutting off. Sunday it rained for that was pretty much the end of my chances. I have experienced this before, but I was at the low fuel light, this is the first time with a quarter tank.

Anyway, It was a great experience.
Corey 06-26-2006 09:42 AM

What a weekend!

Big congrats to Jen for taking a trophy in STX and beating Phil in the process. There were comments in the trophy presentation about the conversation on the ride home to Ohio for you guys... I think Billy also served notice to all of STX that if it rains in Topeka, just stay out of his way. I literally didn't see any faster times in the rain all day. From ANY class.

STS had 4 Subaru drivers in 3 different RS's. That was nice to see. Glad that people are still giving the Civic's some Subaru competition in the class. I shifted to third gear 2 times on the left course and 1 time on the right, and still got into the limiter in some other places so the courses were FAST.

STU had a bunch of Subaru's and was a fun class to watch. Dan and Dave did great as the top placing Subaru's in the class. Mike Neary handled the class again... showing that he will be the guy to beat in Topeka.

Here's my story about the challenge rounds...

The right course and left courses were two completely different animals as we got into the later rounds. The left course had to be driven with caution, with water runoff running through at some key parts on the course. The right course was almost completely dry.

When I went up against Greg, with $1,000 on the line I knew I was going to be down after my left side run. But 1.2 SECONDS!!! Oh crap!!! I went over to the right side and just went for it. 12/10ths is probably about right...It was my best run in the challenge for sure, but Greg got a little too conservitive also. When I crossed the line I looked over and he was still rounding the last turn.

Same goes for the final round, only I didn't execute the left side as well. I had a big "oh boy, I'm going to spin" moment in the one slalom and tried to push it too hard to make up for the lost time, causing me to go off-line in some turns. Oh well, live and learn. Congratulations to Scott Hoffman the winner of the Super Challenge who ran great runs in the challenge even in the wet on V710's!

Thanks to all those who shouted their support for me during the challenge rounds. It's great to hear everybody behind you while pulling up to the line. Really, it gets you psyched!

Yep. Normally on a flat surface I used to be able to run less than an 8th tank (almost on empty). However, once the terrain started getting hilly with undulations (from what I hear the DC lot is like) I needed to have more than 1/4 tank. Starting at like 1/2 tank and going from there.

Fuel starvation is what you had. :)

+1. I've been getting fuel starvation with over a HALF a tank of gas in the RS with the hankooks rs-2s ("street" tires). The Gwinette lot in Atlanta has so much of a topography change that I was fuel starving until I filled the tank up to 2/3. I usually don't see it with flat lots.

Congrats to all that brought home the hardware.

As for comments during the ride home,. I'm pretty sure Phil's more excited about me beating him than I am. How did he put it? "It's about d*mn time!!" :D

Congrats to Corey for his Challenge performance!! (And for his class win and 3rd qualifier position.) If I calculated right, that should put you in first place in the Super Challenge season rankings by about 15 points! Congrats!!:banana:

Greg, nice job for your first Challenge appearance! Yeah, you can't ever let up (except under the new rules, if you're sure your opponent has hit a cone). I too learned that the hard way during the Bonus Challenge in Walnut Ridge. Sorry you had to learn it the hard way when it really mattered. Also, thanks for grabbing the air tank!! Are you going to any Steel Cities events at BeaveRun in the next few weeks, do you think? There's a points event on Saturday, July 8th that we might go to and a TNT on Saturday, July 15th that we are definitely going to. If you're going to either of those, just bring it with you. If not, we'll work something out.
Oh, and very sorry to hear about the tranny. :(

And it was awesome meeting so many folks. I really hope you are all totally hooked now and will do the Series next year. :)

RS's have a completely different pickup system than the WRXs for whatever reason. For Steve, just run like KC said. Flat surfaces == run with the light on. OMGHillz! means add some gas. Sorry to hear about the fuel starvation; believe me I can identify. Only mine was for 5 seconds at a time, not a half second. :(

Yeah, J-Ro is pretty stellar at this autocross thing. I'm hoping to get the car to the Wendover Pro and co-drive it with him there. Running the DL-1 should teach me quite a bit.

I think he'll drive it at the Finale and Nats, and I'm quite tempted to drive with him at Nats in it for more learning. I'm driving the Spyder well enough that I should be able to trophy in CSP if I drove it well, which would be nice since I've never done that, but I doubt I'd learn as much as codriving with Jonathan. Nice to have options, I guess.

Now to start poking Steve more for those shocks.

Congratulations to everyone (Corey on his win, Jen for her trophy, and everyone esle). Everyone drove superbly. It was nice to meet those people that I have not yet.

The rain on sunday was about the most fun I had the whole weekend, racing wise.

Yeah, my black '97 doesn't have the way cool gray racing stripes. :) Ron's a friend of mine, and we all wanted to make sure he could get the car fixed quickly, and still be able to compete. I think he had six ride offers before they even got the car off the line. :)

I had just put new axles in my black '97 and hadn't disposed of the old ones yet, so Pat brought them up on Sunday, and Ron fixed it and was able to drive home without incident. :)

One more reason why FS is awesome. :)

Karen
PhilC 06-26-2006 04:23 PM

Just looked at the reaction time and 60' listings. Did a double take on my .479 non-redlight time on the left until I remembered that whole embarrasing e-brake problem which led to that really stellar 1.479 reaction time. At least that isn't the run I ended up standing on.

We normally can run our car for two more runs with the low fuel light on before we get starvation. Saturday afternoon I was getting starvation on my last two runs with the gas gauge indicating well over 1/8th of a tank though.

It's not just FS, it's the whole group of people who do ProSolos and it's one of the biggest reasons we'll drive 13+ hours to do a Pro. When we blew the rear differential in Peru we literally had every single person in STX who didn't already have a co-driver offer us a ride along with half of STS. That included people we really didn't know well at all.

Glad to hear he got the car fixed. I know they were working on it between deluges on Sunday and I didn't see if it was done by the time we left.

I think my biggest laugh of the weekend was from Ian who was one of the thirty people standing around watching Sam take the wheel off to see what was wrong. He got handed the hub which had sheared off because he piped up with "I'm a material's engineer" he looked at it very carefully for about 30 seconds and said "It's broken".
what rpms were you launching at? i was sticking to 5200-5500 which seemed to work well in my car.

that dude in the other white sti had a few 1.7 60's!

Yeah, and being a noob and all I thought that was slow. Overall, my RT sucked and had tons of trouble on the left side of the course. Then on Sunday I almost "wet me pants" (like it would have mattered) when I dropped the clutch instead of letting it slip and the car crabbed sideways towards the infield. Doh! lol Oh and thanks Dan, because I had know idea at what RPM to launch until you clued me in!

Also I am on stock suspension which probably helps with the weight xfer to the rear during the launch.

I was launching at 6k or so. I'm definately not shy with the gas pedal. I launched in the wet at 5-5.5k. I was crabbing a bit on all of my launches, even in the dry. It was a heck of a lot of fun though. I think next year we'll be better prepared since well have some time tuning the Subies to get the best out of the chassis and more drive time to know how to handle the cars better. I'm not to overly-concerned with this years results as I know I'm a noob to tuning a car and the STi.
This should never happen:
Seriously, what happened there? I was happy to be but a car length back.

Congrats to Courtney, and also Greg for running hard in the challenge too! And Jen, great times! As bad as I was feeling, the competition and good times still made for a great weekend. :D

I can't wait until Topeka, although with my mental blowups on Saturday, I doubt I'll make the finale at this point. :o

, man you guys are mean to your cars.

I was launching at 4500-5000rpm and still getting crazy wheelspin. I dropped back to 3500rpm in the wet, and yeah, I think there was a big Subaru magnet in the mud/grass island 'cause I know Stompy twisted a little in that direction for me too. :)

Stompy has teh boost too. I usually launch at 5k or so at regular A/X, I guess I was wanting to get up that hill to fast.

I had a blast watching you handle Stompy out there Karen. I have never been so impressed with the raw power of a car off the line save the 2005 ASP Z06 that was there.

I was launching at 1500rpm and leaving when the first yellow light started to light up and I was still getting tire spin and .9xx reaction times ;)
I can't wait until Topeka, although with my mental blowups on Saturday, I doubt I'll make the finale at this point. :o
I wouldn't worry too much. I'm pretty confident you'll make the Finale. You've got 14 points, that puts you well within the top half of the class in STX. And that's assuming National limits the invites. Last year, I think they invited everyone who had attended 2 events, because a local guy had 2 points (i.e. the minimum for attending 2 events) and he got an invite. I'd guess that with the date change for the Finale, enough people won't be able to make it that you shouldn't worry at all. Heck, I wasn't worrying last week when I had my grand total of 6 points. :p
