Disclaimer: Modification of your car involves risks and may void your warranty. I can not be held responsible for the modifications you consciously decide to undertake nor for the results of doing so.

Note: This modification was made to a 05 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Wagon, other models installations may differ slightly.

Tools Needed:
- Wire Cutters
- Electrical Tape

NOTE: Wires differ on the 06-07 models, make sure you read the connections if you have a newer model year car.
for a 2006 STi.. it does NOT work as illustrated above.. ask me how i know

the correct wire for the 2006 STi is the WHITE with a red/pinkish stripe. its no longer marked as "LIG" but as "ILL".
This is a great mod for the people who hate the fact that the clock dims when you turn your headlights on. I did it a few days ago and I love it.

Step 1 Removing the Center Clock Housing:
First off grab the housing in the way that is shown in the photo, this is the easiest way I found to remove it.

Step 2 Removing the Wire Harness from the Clock:
Press the tab on the white connector and remove the harness from the clock.

Step 3 Exposing the Wire to be Cut:
Grab your wire cutters and carefully cut back the black tape that is around the wires, cut back around 1 to 1.5 inches incase you want to put the dimming feature back.

Step 4 Cutting the Wire:
Next use your wire cutters to cut off the pink and blue wire. This is the 2nd wire up from the tab on the connector. If in doubt look at the back of the clock, it will show the wires. You will be cutting the wire labeled LIG. After you cut it, fold it back.

Step 5 Taping the Wire With Electrical Tape:
Cut off a medium sized piece of electrical tape and tape up the wires.

Step 6 Replace everything:
Reconnect the wire harness and place the clock housing back in the dash.

Youre done! This concludes my DIY for making your clock not dim. Now tonight when you go drive, notice that your clock doesnt dim anymore when you turn your lights on.

Enjoy and thanks for reading!

Haha yeah. Its been a while since I have DIY'ed on my car, so I did this the other day. And was like wow, there is no DIY on nasioc for this. :D
spritefiend 10-10-2006 08:07 PM

works for an 06 sti??

John.
ilnmcom 10-10-2006 08:17 PM

Very cool. Its one of the little things that annoys me about the car. Thanks for posting.

UPDATE for 2006's
let me rephrase...

for a 2006 STi.. it does NOT work as illustrated above.. ask me how i know

the correct wire for the 2006 STi is the WHITE with a red/pinkish stripe. its no longer marked as "LIG" but as "ILL".

CharT 10-11-2006 01:41 PM

Is there a way to just pop the pin out of the connector? That way, it's fully reversible without having to resplice the wire.
jblaze5579 10-11-2006 01:55 PM

Stick a jewler's screwdriver into the back of the connector and pull the wire and pin out
rukkie 10-11-2006 01:57 PM

wait a minute.... how would cutting 1 wire stop the dimming..?
LastResort 10-11-2006 02:00 PM
wait a minute.... how would cutting 1 wire stop the dimming..?
Because that's the dimming wire. It's just a 5-12V signal.
disaster999 10-11-2006 03:21 PM

do you guys think that its too dark to see the clock at night? or you guys keep your headlights on 24/7???

just a question...
spritefiend 10-11-2006 03:28 PM

i disabled my drl's, sometimes i will run my headlights during the day.. and i dislike the dimming.

John.
Hero_Sky 10-11-2006 04:01 PM

I wish my clock works for that matter.
sc00ter 10-11-2006 11:15 PM

Of all the mods I wanted to do this one came from the first day I bought the car.

+12345 for your instructions.

I also deleted the DRL's so the little creep light on each side is on. I run with this on during the day...which meant it was hard to see the clock. But now that will not be a problem.
LeeC 10-11-2006 11:27 PM

Awesome :)

I'm doing this tomorow, any DIY for the stock Radio to keep it from dimming?
Awesome :)

Just push the power button down for a few seconds.

Trying in the morning:)
Wannascooby 10-12-2006 12:05 AM

I never REALLY noticed the dimming until I read this thread dang it!!! Now I have to disable it hahaha
WRXDriftR 10-12-2006 12:16 AM

you could have just bent the LIG tab down on back of the clock instead of messing with wiring. it works the same ;)
Yesitsdrew5310 10-15-2006 01:12 PM

^^ Thats true, but I prefer cutting things.
Stoupazz 10-25-2006 05:04 PM

never noticed the dimming thing but now im afraid i will next time i drive my car.. bahhhh lol

if it bothers me ill have to try this..
FromEvoToRS37 04-12-2007 04:22 PM

F(*K I had to go do this without reading down a couple posts.... on a 2007 DO NOT CUT THE PINK AND BLUE WIRE!!!! my clock doesn't work now haha I hafta get a new wire harness from Subaru to make my clock work again or maybe strip the wire and wrap them together or somethin. Anyone know how much that harness of five or six wires that come from the back of the clock costs?
WhiteFox 04-12-2007 06:07 PM

Don't know how to solder? try butt connectors if all else fails. A new harness (if replaceable) from subaru is probably going to cost you.
Fixing it isn't a big deal.
Cooter05WRX 04-12-2007 06:12 PM

if you use black tape they will not see it as well if they pull the clock for some reason.
ATK 04-12-2007 07:00 PM

Definitely not worth it to buy a whole new harness. You have no idea what else that is connected to and how far it runs. You'd have your entire dash out of your car before you know it.
100_Percent_Juice 04-12-2007 07:30 PM

reading an entire DIY before doing it yourself... priceless
Yesitsdrew5310 04-13-2007 02:51 AM

 sorry for the confusion. I added the part about the 06-07 models, that should take care of the problem. :D
Uncle Tattoo 04-19-2007 07:43 AM

isnt there a way to hook the clock into the stock dimming knob so if you are driving at night, you can turn it down with the rest of the gauges?
imprezaowner27 04-19-2007 02:12 PM
isnt there a way to hook the clock into the stock dimming knob so if you are driving at night, you can turn it down with the rest of the gauges?
now were getting complicated...

i suppose you could remove ALL the electrical tape, cut the wire at the edge, remove your dash, find the wire for the dimming switch, cut that wire, solder the two together and back into the switch and youre done....

but im not electrician, and if you ruin your car, im not responsible
DieselClown 04-19-2007 04:07 PM

THANKS for this post! Now if only there was a way to make the stock radio always bright.
Eric310 04-19-2007 05:09 PM

^^^its not a permanent fix but hold down the power button on the radio and it makes it not dim. I just did the clock one and decided to bend the tab instead of cutting. If anything i can just bend it back and it will work just fine. I tried the power button for the radio and it works...i just wish there was something more permanent.
LastResort 04-19-2007 05:30 PM
now were getting complicated...
Not really, the dimming wire is easy to find. You have one in the car stereo harness that goes from 5-12V (I think). The problem is that LED's in the clock wouldn't like that.
BrownBoy 05-24-2007 09:46 PM

Can I get someone to verify which wire it is for me please? I have a 2007 2.5i...is it the blue/red or the white/red?
BrownBoy 05-24-2007 10:36 PM

Pheuf, always go with your gut!

Its the white with red stripe for anyone wondering. :)
MarkRx 05-25-2007 04:06 AM

why would anyone want the clock blaring at you during night driving??
Eyedoc Orlando 05-25-2007 08:17 AM
why would anyone want the clock blaring at you during night driving??
^^ I agree... how badly do you need to know the time anyways?
wrXmon 05-25-2007 09:00 AM
^^ I agree... how badly do you need to know the time anyways?
OCD! I have to know the time, all the time.
BrownBoy 05-25-2007 11:18 AM

The clock at night time isn't too bright for me...it was the daytime that bothered me. I drive with my headlights on 24/7 and I could never see the time with the sun out. I'd always have to turn off my headlights for a minute then turn them on again...I liked this mod. :)
DieselClown 05-25-2007 11:29 AM

that's odd...I just found out my clock never dims when my headlights are on. now if only you have a mod for the stupid stock radio not to dim.
Saucy 05-25-2007 11:33 AM

omg thank god, i was always wondering.. thanks! awesome writeup!
Yesitsdrew5310 05-25-2007 12:05 PM

^^ I'm glad it helped ya out. The clock is not super crazy bright during the night. It's not like you are being blinded by it.
Eric310 05-25-2007 12:06 PM

for the radio just hold the power button and it either dims or doesnt dim...but you have to do it every time you want it like that.
NoobaruSTi 05-25-2007 12:09 PM

The radio should be the same thing... In the corner of the radio's wiring harness, (I'm referring to a 2007) is a white w/ red stripe wire marked "Illumination". You should be able to just disconnect that wire. There's also a dimmer wire here, in theory this is used to control the amount of dimming, but I haven't done any testing.

Keep in mind, I have not tested this! However, it's pretty simple standard operation for radios. Again, all you're doing here is disconnecting the wire (from the radio or clock) that tells the device the lights are on, so dim the display.

I've got a second harness in between my radio and the factory harness (line level converters and passive crossovers), so if I remember I might try to disconnect the pin from the harness and test this for you guys later. It should work, though.
MarkRx 05-25-2007 06:26 PM

I thought the 06-07's wrx and sti had DRL's. I know i disabled my sti drl's. The instrument panel and clock doesnt dim unless you have the headlight switch in the parking or headlight position. Even in the off position you stil have headlights and guess what, the clock doesnt dim! lol. My issue is this... i installed an aftermarked head unit and it has a wire for the dimmer, as most do. when you turn on the headlights, the radio dims with everything else. problem is, it's not dim enough for me... there's no adjustment in the radio so i'm screwed. the other thing is on the sti, even the lowest gauge illumination setting is too bright for me... I know all the sti guys in here prob run the instrument illumination at 4 during the day and 1 at night :)
aggie113 03-08-2009 04:32 PM

Just found this and did it. Now I'm looking for info on doing the same thing for my hvac and stereo lighting. No luck so far on those.
MrSlowbaru 03-08-2009 04:35 PM
