Uh...........I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but if you copy one part that I designed and sell it to someone else, I would slap you with a lawsuit before the second UPS pick-up came.
Some of these manufacturers have a ton of $ and work in R & D, And you want to walk in and copy it? If these are for you alone, you may be fine, maybe not. If you are working on your new business venture to sell these, I would get a $100,000 retainer started with a damn good lawyer. Copying a Subaru part is one thing. They are out to sell cars, and may not bother with you.
I do not know of your intent. And, I am sure you will do as you wish. Think of Paul at Primative, he took many hours to design that skidplate. In no time, you have a carbon replica? Is Kartboy's shifter or droplink next?

"tensecimpreza", there is no need to be rude to me. There is a person at this end. I have not been rude to you. Please put yourself in the following story, and see if you would just "chill out".
I will sit and watch as this unfolds. I only offer one example of why I have a problem with this. What others do is not what we are discussing.
Let's say you have spent six months of evenings and weekends building and designing the perfect WRX wide-body carbon-fiber kit. You have hundreds of hours of work, thought and sweat in this kit. You have the capacity to now make two kits per week.
Your neighbor seems like a super nice guy and stops to admire your newly outfitted WRX with the wide-body kit. He says it looks amazing, and is sure you will sell hundreds.
You sell your new friend one of the first kits for his new WRX. He was such a nice guy! What you did not know, is that he owns a business that handles ABS, carbon-fiber and fiberglass production. He makes a mold of your kit, and in two weeks now has 800 kits in stock. He is selling 150 kits per week at $2000 per kit.
Are you going to go over to his house and help him wax his new Hummer? Or maybe ride around with him to find a building lot for his new 7,000 square foot home?
You will do as you wish. I have no control of that. Some situations will envolve legality...... others involve MORALITY.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the myriad of replica parts for the WRX just copies of originals from manufacturers? Doesn't a STI replica hood scoop mean that it is an exact copy of an OEM STI hood scoop? There are hundreds of other parts that are classified as replicas.
I believe the law allows a business to copy and distribute a product to the public as long as their is no patent applied to the copied item and it is disclosed to the public that it is in fact a copy. So if you neighbor develops a wide-body kit and calls it Marks wide body kit, but doesn't patent it I can copy it and market it as a Marks wide body kit replica. I'm not speaking as to the ethics of such a scenario, but I don't think I would lose this case in court.
No patent, no privelege, no protection. (If product is stated as a copy of the original.)

Variablegear's trying to hook us up, i doubt he's intentionally trying to put ppl out of business.
I understand what you're saying but you just have to adapt or protect yourself or make your original product somehow that much better than the knockoff. And I have no sympathy for any manufacturer. Granted, there are exceptions like if two products are the same; the import is $1, the one made in the USA is $1.01, I'll buy the domestic one, but for the most part, I'm a consumer and I'll buy the best product at the cheapest price.
besides, in your example, i'd jack my neighbor's hummer and ride away with his daughter ;) I wasn't trying to be super-rude, I was just disagreeing by being sarcastic.

actually guys
there already is a company that makes this scoop... the one for the intercooler? yes... they already exist. as for the fuse box cover? yes also... try and do some research.. it yields results..if you have the time
As for Gravel-Fun...(Roy)
I know him, and he is right on this... but unfortunately, there are laws that can screw the guy who made the first one. or the person who does all the work but unfortunately, has much less money. It's a founding principle of this country and this economy. Just ask RalliSpec when Tirerack steamrolled them right out of the O Z wheel business. AFTER they had brought the P1 to this country and done all the hard work.
Now, what everyone is after is high quality CF parts right? that is what Gravel-Fun and I are trying to do. Becuase the OEM ones from STi or prodrive can cost as much as a small car.
I like cosmetic appointments as much as the next guy, but I am honestly more interested in functional pieces. In between 2 jobs, 3 colleges courses, a new place, 2 cats and one fiance', things are pretty busy in my life. However I am trying to invest a considerable amount of time into this. My interior console has been rmoved and other things too..
Like I tell others, I don't want to get rich. I just want to get it done.

This is what I'm looking for and I know that Adamsrs is as well.
We would both like a stock like 2.5RS hood scoop that will fit backwards on the hood, for a FMIC setup. however just flipping the stock scoop would require some modification to make it look proper. I found a company that makes a reverse scoop but it doesn't look like it fits that great. Adamsrs PM me as they are in the seattle area for the US distribution if you would like to get in contact with them.

yes the do-luck one is the one I am speaking of, I believe the US-distribution is a new thing so perhaps they don't have the parts yet. but from the pictures I've seen it looks like it does not fit right, like it does not sit flush with the hood.
http://www.do-luck-usa.com/products.html?auto=GC8 like in the picture on here. but it's hard to see for sure.
plus at $370, it's pretty pricy to not fit perfectly ;)

I have Pmed everyone who has Pmed me I am still waiting confirmation from a few of you on the parts being sent.
Now to touch the subject of morals and patents I am only trying to offer parts that are not currently offered for the main reason of less competetion more business for us. As far as the few parts I plan on doing that are already offered in carbon I think I can offer it at a lower price and would it be such a bad thing supporting a US based business vs the ones overseas?

I am sorry if I came across too strong. I don't have all the answers. I do not know the position of your firm. I would consider many options, as this economy continues to slow.
I think it's too easy to be short with people on the web. It's so impersonal, it does not seem like you're speaking with a person. Words are written that would never be said "face to face".
I have been screwed over so many times, even more by family members, when it comes to "car favors". Maybe that spilled into my first post.
I have nothing to add. Good luck in your ventures.

Perhaps you should look into other replacement cases for things other than car parts. for christ sake the suprastore.com has/had a CF toilet seat for sale.

It w ould just be very expensive for full replacment mainly for the fabrication of all the mounting tabs and that is an assumption that they have sevral screw tubes etc.. and overlay would look the same with quite a bit less labor unless the unit had individual cutouts for each key in the keyboard and by the pic it looked as it was one large cutout. If it had individual cut outs a company with cnc or carbon computer controlled carbon cutter would be able to do it more efficently.
Can they gel coat?
you don't gel coat CF as much as you would fiberglass. using proper techniques when manufacturing the CF will eliminate that need. pre preg is excellent for this purpose, however only if you intend to try and make a fashion statement. If you look at most competition cars you'll see very little bare fiber, this is due to partly because of looks and sponsoring contracts. The other is that when you see bare fiber there can be very little shine due to the decreased level of epoxy used. using more resin makes the part heavier and thus less practicle as a weight saving measure.
I'm trying to do this myself but a lack of temp controlled environments makes options limited. As does not having access to your own kiln or autoclave.

Hi
Took me a while to get back on here but no worries we are almost done with almost all the parts sent. There was only a part or two we may have problems with which we emailed the owners to see if the mind delays. We should have pics of some of the parts tonight.
As for gel coats we stay away from them. We have researched a few but dislike some of the problems they offer.
For materials we use all carbon and no glass. We only use glass on molds we we are trying to get into other materials. We only use opxy resins and refuse to use vynal ester and polyester resins due to shrinkage and warping. All parts are heat cured in oven or autoclave depnding on part. We use both prepregs and wetlayups as well.
As for using a blueprint to make a part we can to a certain extent but it gets very expensive making a tool (mold) from scratch..
Sorry for delays we will have pictures up soon.
Some emails we have recieved in regards to driveshafts and a arms I will just warn anyone who is intrested be ready to spend the cash and wait prior in messaging me. These are very expensive parts to make but we have full capability to do so.
Well that should so it pics tonight :)
Took me a while to get back on here but no worries we are almost done with almost all the parts sent. There was only a part or two we may have problems with which we emailed the owners to see if the mind delays. We should have pics of some of the parts tonight.

oh oh I'm interested too! But I'll wait until molds are done to order parts I don't want to send out my **** and not have it for however long. I like what you're doing though and if you keep producing replica CF parts for cheap you're gonna make bank. I'll be watching this thread!

ah! the link doesn't work. Was it locked or removed?
This is about as frusturating as it gets. Parts are finally done and the thread with the pics is inaccessable!

variablegear, can you post a link to the thread over at SRO? I can't seem to find any info over there, but am sure that's where it linked to. Or you can just host the pics elsewhere (PM me if you need a spot).:D
variablegear, do you go by Onlinedime over at SRO? Cuz someone by that name is selling CF CWest Impreza grills.

yeah, that's his stuff. So far it looks like he's got CF pulley covers and the CWEST replica grilles. So my part isn't done yet. :(
variablegear... do you have an ETA on the Legacy grille that you are working on?
