Gaging Interest: AWD Challenge (similar to Honda Challenge) part 2

joey1313 03-11-2005 09:11 AM

Here is a link to the rules for bracket classes at our local track. I didn't want to post a whole page. It addresses some of the questions you've had and some of the reasons they do this like making it easier to tech the cars and not having to worry if someone has an illegal part. you have to scroll down some to get to the bracket stuff and of course bracket times and such will have to be altered for each track

PS. Are we still 'gagging' interest? ;)[/QUOTE]

Haaaaa!

We are hoping to get at least 5-10 subies out to race this year, but if we go based on the responses here.... there will be about 3 of them.

Hey, that just makes it easier to have a podium finish ;).

My car is a few years out from being a track car, but it should start seeing limited track time in a few months. However, I am always interested in a series that I can help out and spread the word about :)

I kund of like the time bracket idea as it does eliminate the problem of classifying cars by modifications. The hard part, as noted, is setting up the brackets for different tracks. I'm sure, as in any new series, it will be a trial and error method.

I don't like the idea of the penalties for breaking out of the bracket. Yes, move the car to the next bracket, even score the car as if it was entered in the next bracket, but don't disqualify the car. I know my lap times can improve dramatically when I'm chasing someone down. I'm also thinking that, initailly at least, there will be not enough cars to fill a field by bracket, so multiple (even all) brackets will run together, just be scored separately.

Just some thoughts.

A breakout without penalty makes bracketing pointless. "If I sandbag just right I will win the bracket, if I breakout no big deal I just get moved into the higher bracket like I was already there." Any rule system that doesn't involve penalties will be gamed to readily and make it a pointless effort.

Personally, I don't see brackets as working for road racing purposes. It groups car/driver ability/potential, rather than grouping car potential and seeing who is the better driver.

That is what road race classing is about - attempting to make the cars potentially similar in performance in order to identify the best driver over the entire racing season (not in any one race). Yes better car prep and better organization has an effect, but properly classed a really good driver will beat a really good car.

I don't know - to me if a car is classified (to use the above examples) as a 'C' car in the 1.26 - 1.30 bracket and turns times that are say 1.24.5, then to be scored against the 'B' class cars would be enough of a penalty. Instead of being a top 'C' car, they are now a bottom-end 'B' car. I guess I'm envisioning all the cars running together in one or two groups, rather than a separate race for each class.

I guess my reason for liking the bracket idea is to accomodate the greatest number of cars in the fewest number of classes. I don't think that the scope of this series would want to get that involved in tech inspections other than for safety components.

And yes, I'd rather know that I was a better driver than another and not just that I have a better/faster car.

What did your crew come up with the other saturday? What sanctioning group are you working with?

We hashed out the rules a bit, going to likely follow a cross between USTC and EMRA with some obvious and not so obvious rule changes for AWD cars.

Likely we'll work with NASA-NE, NASA-MA, and EMRA have to approach them yet but want to get our stuff in order before we do that.
