WRC wing mirrors = rice?

I have been tootling the idea of buying the carbon fiber replica WRC wing mirrors for a while now, but my friends are throwing red flags saying RICE RICE RICE...
What do u think about them on a street car?
Well, a street car with the WRC wing on it

nahh not rice... go for it
| theJohnson | 11-21-2003 02:32 AM |
i wouldnt call that rice. now, if you got some m3 mirrors...then i would say so.
| Kostamojen | 11-21-2003 02:39 AM |
Anything that has a reason isnt rice. Getting rid of that annoying side view mirror whistle constitutes as a VERY good reason :p
| SJwrx | 11-21-2003 03:19 AM |
yeah, thats the reason I am getting them... also weight savings from the fabric and how much wiring I can gut.

I don't see how those can be 'rice'. they look more subtle than stock!

I like them...It's far from rice..
| Seraph | 11-21-2003 09:35 AM |
Its not rice at all, the thing i'm concerned with is the smaller mirror surface. Are they convex?
| JIN | 11-21-2003 09:43 AM |
Yeah, I have them ... they are nice and cool to look at from outside the car .... but trust me man ... can harldy see anything out of them. They're worst than the Ganador mirrors that I used to have ... but the carbon fiber and that cool shape ... oh so nice.

I heard through the grapevine that the whistling noise from the side mirrors is caused by a little circle sticker on the mirror housing that resonates when the air flow is just right.
Fold your mirrors and you'll see the sticker.

I don't think what Prodrive use on their WRC rally car can be considered "rice."
But how about these?

For the 2004 WRC car they do have a boxier appearence. I haven't found a company that makes them, but I wouldn't put them on my '02 anyways.

Naw, its the gap in the mirror. I used some stuff to seal the mirror gap (didnt last) but when I did the whistle went away...

I just went to the dealer and said "My damn mirror whistles when I'm driving over 60". They said it was common and just needed to tighten something. Under warranty and under 5 minutes. Ba-da-boom, no more whistle.
By the way, I like the WRX mirrors (been thinking about them myself) but the others shown weren't impressive. Especially those silly tiny things. But, that's just personal opinion! :D

I have a set of the mirrors from Prodrive. You get used to the visibility of them . You can GC8 ones but I don't know if you can get replica ones or not.

PS- why wouldn't they be considered rice? I'm sure most of us agree that an Accord dressed up to look like a touring car is rice. Why would an Impreza dressed up like a rally car be any different? Double standards suck.

Is there an Accord touring car? I don't honestly know but I'd guess so. Chances are the accord on the street is made to look like a touring car because it has a bunch of "cool" bits tagged on that came together that way rather than attempting to look like an official car. Perhaps just touring car in general was what they were going for, rather than THE touring car (or "cars" as it usually is in touring)
I do know that the WRX in stock form is often used on weekdays as a street car and on the weekends as a rally car. Stock (or even riced out) Accords probably can't claim the same when it comes to touring. Maybe that's where the double standard ends...you're making a car that can perform in the same manor (although not as well) as the official car look more official, or maybe you're just a fan paying tribute. If there is an Accord touring car and these guys are making their cars look the same, perhaps they're fans. :)
Either way, I'm just playing devil's advocate, so don't jump on me for the views. They aren't my views, just a "maybe". In my personal opinion if what you're adding functions worse than the stock piece or has no real function, it's probably rice.

Well if it does any justice, my car was engine/suspension modified first (no BOV's, coil over kits, or grounding systems here)... so when the replica WRC wing came out, I thought it was about time. Although the new wing does have a crack (sent it back), and my holes are covered with tape  ...
I know that 1/2 the people are gonna scream "RICE" and 1/2 are gonna scream "WRC"... so basically this is what I am gonna ask...
Would a 2002 WRX that has a WRC wing, STi hoodscoop, and has been lowered (thanks Prodrive), look good with a set of replica WRC carbon fibre mirrors?
Rich

so uh...is this rice?

I mean, chances are, since its dentless and clean, its probably not a rally car, yet its got a "fart cannon", WRC replica wing, WRC replica mirrors, WRC replica rear, bumper front bumper, sideskirts, hood, hell even the roof vent. ITS EVEN GOT A ROLL CAGE!!! RICE A RONI!!! right? I don't think so.
People take this too far. Cars are an expression of yourself. If your car is a "sleeper" (although with as many scoops and lights as your cars have, I would hardly call one a sleeper) then that says something about you. Along the same lines, if your car is all showy (even if its not liked by everyone) that says something about you. And to take the thought all the way to the end, if you pick someone's car apart for little things that they did to them, and call them rice for putting $500 carbon mirrors made specifically for rally on their car...well, I think that says something about you as well.

Prodrive made 3 sets of these for the 2002 WRC Safari Rally in Africa. AV Sports bought all 3 sets (when the two rally cars were decommissioned) and brought them over here to the USA to sell them to clients. I haven't seen any more of these besides the 3 sets that AV Sports brought over.

I paid $500 for a pair (that's what AV Sports sold each of the three pair for), plus $25 shipping, $50 for polishing, and $100 for installation and electrical hookup. They're a lot of fun, but I'll probably switch over to a set of "racing mirrors" (the kind that stick out from the car on a pencil like arm, and provide more real side rear view functionality) once an acceptable set become available.
