Got Bandwidth?! Subaru Legacy GT In-Car Race Video part 1

Got Bandwidth?! Subaru Legacy GT In-Car Race Video
I just got around to publishing this video. It was taken during the Grand Am Cup race at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama on July 29th, 2006. The car is the 2006 Subaru Legacy GT built and campaigned by GOTO:Racing.

Due to an electrical glitch that kept us off the grid, we had to start from the very back of the field. There is lots of passing! Remember, no passing until you are past the start/finish line after the green flag waves... ;)

It's a big file but the quality is pretty good. 720x480, 197MB and 23 minutes long.

Right-click, save-as...

simply awesome that rx-8 was shooting serious flames

The RSX-S battle was awesome he had a little more, but you won out

Great video. Thanks for posting.

Sweet, I love Barber... I can't wait to get out there again this year.

Niiiice! My Legacy would cry in envy if it saw this.

that was nice. better than any HPDE video. way to follow the "rubbin's racin'" rule.
Patrick L 01-10-2007 01:07 AM

Was that the Z4 that kept getting black flagged?

I noticed early in the video as you were going down the front straight. He was leaking fuild out the back on the right side.

I love these videos!

Thanks for posting them!

grippgoat 01-10-2007 01:21 AM

Ew, friends don't let friends post .mov. :P

But anyway, sweet vid. That RX8 just drove right into you (was it you, or one of the Locks?). I also couldn't help thinking it seemed like you were having a lot of trouble making passes stick, especially when you had the inside line going into a corner and it looked like you were right up next to the other car.

It's a shame you had to start from the back. :( The car was obviously much faster than the cars you were racing against, based on how fast you caught the next car after finishing a pass.

Patrick L 01-10-2007 01:22 AM

BTW Gary, Nice driven!!

I was cheering you on as I was watching the video the whole time.
Notes:
RX8 too Loud! Need a Tom Special Muffler. LOL :P
You could really reel them in on turns over crests.
nhluhr 01-10-2007 03:29 AM

Awesome video with terrific action.

I'm really curious about the video equipment. It seemed the camera was moving inside the cockpit, but that it was somehow stabilized (very well) with the scenery. What setup is this? Is it just really good IS in the camera or a special stabilizing mount?
pio!pio! 01-10-2007 06:10 AM

Yeah that RX8 almost shoved you off
He prolly didn't know you were there? Or thought you would lift? Or is a bastard?

And rather than thinking of it as trouble making passes stick. I prefer to think of it as knowing it is not a sprint race, being a couple hours with pit stops, so no need to go maximum attack right at the beginning.

Seems like most of the guys you are fighting with were always caught out compromising their lines to defend their positions on corners leading to long straights!! hahaha
pio!pio! 01-10-2007 06:17 AM

BTW the audio and video were desyncronized for me, but I still enjoyed it.

I was wondering where all the GS cars were until the very end :P
mav1c 01-10-2007 10:58 AM

Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, the camera was very stable. What equipment were you using?

Do you have to run a stock exhaust? The car seemed so much quieter than anything else.

Thanks again, now I need to find a way to get to Barber. That track looks fun.
jeffreymstrong 01-10-2007 11:02 AM

Downloading now, I'll have to watch it during lunch today.
Ew, friends don't let friends post .mov. :P
I KNOW! I'm using the beta Handbrake for Windows to rip the DVD and I can't find a way to get it into a format that Sony Vegas Movie Studio will accept. Quicktime eats it up, though
I also couldn't help thinking it seemed like you
were having a lot of trouble making passes stick, especially when you had the inside line going into a corner and it looked like you were right up next to the other car.
Less trouble and more caution. If you notice in the video, a lot of these guys at the back of the grid are erratic in their lines and very unaware of the cars around them. There are a lot of new, relatively inexperienced drivers coming into GAC. Hell, I was run off the track on the very first lap by that clueless driver in the BMW. That solidified my mentality for the rest of my race:

1) It's wasn't my car
2) It was a long race
3) I wanted to give my codriver (Brian) a vehicle in great shape

So, if there was any doubt about the guy I was next to, I'd give him the corner and pass him in the next corner or two by intimidating him into a mistake at an apex.
He prolly didn't know you were there? Or thought you would lift? Or is a bastard?
He must not have know I was there. The Legacy GT is SO quiet because the rules mandate a completely stock system from intake opening to exhaust tip. So if he wasn't looking for me, he'd never know I was there.

It was actually quite funny, because I saw him coming over on me and I just waited. Sure enough, bump. The other driver was so pissed off thinking I ran into him, shaking his fist out the window at me. I just had to laugh. The other driver was so upset, he missed two upshifts after the next corner and I just walked by him. You can hear me on the radio afterwards sharing the funny story with the crew :)
Seems like most of the guys you are fighting with were always caught out compromising their lines to defend their positions on corners leading to long straights!! hahaha
Well, that's part of it. Get in their mirrors and distract them. Forcing the other driver into a mistake makes a pass much easier than stuffing it down the inside at the apex. Not that there's anything wrong with that ;)
Yeah, the camera was very stable. What equipment were you using?
I don't know. You'll have to ask the Locks that question. It does have very good image stabilization, though.
Do you have to run a stock exhaust? The car seemed so much quieter than anything else.
Yes, which makes it a little more difficult because all you can hear are the other cars' engines around you. Makes the shift light very important.
Thanks again, now I need to find a way to get to Barber. That track looks fun.
Barber is the most beautiful racing facility I've ever been to. There are some crazy sculptures all around the place in some very odd places. All the lawns are immaculately manicured. Just ask Tommy about the grass, as he got to see it VERY close up. I'll let him tell the story... :)

We should have alot more videos up by April. While we aren't going to be at the Florida races, we plan to bring the LGT back to ST duty in 2007, starting at Iowa Speedway and continuing through the rest of the season. We'll keep the cameras rolling and get all the action we can.

Nice vid!

I was getting mad at that RSX and the RX7. Especially that RX7.

I'm a noob at track stuff, but isn't some of that a black flag?
FromageTheDog 01-10-2007 09:59 PM

Wow, what a treat!

Question: it seems that the line that you are following is dramatically different from that of the others. For example, you seem far more able to hold to the inside (and cut corners quite aggressively :D ), even more so than the 3-series Beemer, which really surprised me. Is this just indicative of differing skill levels, or the benefit of an AWD layout?

Lots of reasons. Different driver preferences, vehicle capabilities, driver skills and entry speeds.

However, I wanted to place the car on the inside like that. Who knows if they wanted their cars way out there where they were...

2. What was that object in the middle on the track? I also heard yo talking then.

This is something that kind of baffles me. On somewhat tighter tracks with decreasing radius, off-cambers, what IS the best line for AWD Subies? Is it better to late apex with deep braking then shoot for exit speeds, or follow the lines of momentum racers (low hp such as miatas, spec se-r, etc.)? It seems that I do better (butt dyno) with the late apex/exit speed method, on Streets of Willow and WSIR for example. But I can also hold a tighter line if I need to (-2.5/-1.5 camber) and hang on through the turn, catch the late apexers!

Great video, BTW, Gary! Very inspiring :D

The bottom end is built by GST Motorsports, but everything else is bone stock, as per Grand-Am rules. We run the first gen Cobb Access Port. Tuning is also done by GST.

In this video, the car had DMS 50mm on it, but that is going to change soon as Grand-Am transitions us to Koni products. For those that don't know, Koni is now the title sponsor. Sway bars are Hotchkis with Cobb endlinks.
Questions:

1. Something about how funny it was that the RX8 driver got pissed at me after he ran into me and that he was so flustered is missed two shifts and gave the position to me anyway :)
2. The object was the rear bumper cover of one of the Hondas. I believe I was informing the crew that we might get a full course yellow to clear that debris, so that they could work that into our strategy.

Most race tracks put up turn markers to help drivers gauge their position entering a turn. Some tracks have better natural references than other. These signs help with the drivers timing as he braking and turning in. They are most helpful at the end of long straights.

Some tracks (like Portland) have 400..300..200..100 signs, as well, although I'm not sure if that's feet, yards, meters, or what. I use them to gauge when I should start braking.

Ya, having the stock intake/exhaust must make it annoying for other folks to hear you... I guess you should have honked before that RX-8 hit you  He was quite an annoying driver, and liked to get that back end out for no apparent reason (poorly setup car?)

That RSX sounded great at least as you passed it :p Good little battle.

That porsche though... Damn fast there at the end!

I thought the team was petitioning to at least have a catback so you and other cars can hear yours. I found it funny that the Legacy 2.5GT seemed like a luxury ride compared to the other cars, quiet and stable.

Yes. With the exception of Daytona, our plan is to hit as many events as possible starting at Iowa in April. Dates like Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, and Miller are already cemented into our schedule, and we intend to add as many more as we can.

When we first approached GA about running a Subaru in their series, they were resistent to the idea of the WRX running. We then found SOA would support the homologation if we did a Legacy instead, and GA found this more to their liking. Hence the reason we built a legacy.

We are in the process of aquiring a second car, and we are currently interviewing funded drivers for all our seats. The number of events we do beyond those I stated above depends on the funding level of the drivers we find. Wish us luck.

The KCS Hoosier is a rather hard compound designed for endurance. I suspect this is why it is noisier than it's cousins.

Great video! The problem however is that it let's me know just how much improvement is left in my driving.

It was fun to watch the short race with the #94 yellow Acura as he is my local race tire supplier :)

Even Hoosier R6s howl, it just means you are going fast. I watch my videos and when the tires aren't howling I know I should be going faster in that section. Gary was going so fast they were howling 1/2 way down the straights ;)

Thanks,
