How many people would like to replace/change the MOMO emblem on their steering wheel? part 1

How many people would like to replace/change the MOMO emblem on their steering wheel?
Hi,

I am trying to get a feel for an interest in a custom emblem to replace the MOMO emblem that is currently located in the steering wheel of the WRX. I wanted to intially start by selling an emblem featuring the official WRX logo. If there is enough interest I may have these manufactured. Let me know what you think and what other logos multiple people would be interested in.
Also, what type of price range do you feel this is worth. I think that I can get them made for about $45/each. They would be silver to start and of course anyone could paint them what ever color they wish.

Thanks,
Justin

I would never...but then again my nickname has been "mo" since forever, so it fits for me.

I don't have a WRX, so no Momo wheel (although I would like a V6 STi wheel someday), but BUMP for a good idea. :)

It sounds like you may have your sources already, but a good person to talk to about manufacturing goodies like this may be Rick Hesel, who started his own side-business doing stuff like this for the Honda S2000. I used to be a Mod. on S2ki.com so I know Rick. Respectable vendor, definitely. Thought you guys might trade ideas if you need any. [emailprotected] and www.ricks2k.com

If I had an STi, i'd want an STi badge. I don't, so Momo for me.
Jon-RIWRX 02-05-2004 05:06 PM

Id like a prodrive logo
dead-eye 02-05-2004 07:40 PM

Would it be possible to make only the bezel? Mine got scuffed by the mechanics at the shop.
crystalhelix 02-05-2004 07:45 PM

Suggestions are good
Jon-RIWRX,

Thanks for the prodrive suggestion. As far as replicating the stock bezel, that would be more difficult. There are a couple of different manufacturing methods I am looking at, and thats what would affect cost. I don't want to produce replica crap so I plan on getting more quotes and seeing if I could make this for a reasonable price. If all works out I could cheaply make personal emblems based on the buyers preference. I have quite a few connections, so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the contributions so far,
Justin

I like Momo emblem. Just wish it was red and not yellow.

I'll stick with the MOMO.... unless there was a type-R!

Nice
Yes,

I plan on making a Type-R Si Type-RA M2 all in one emblem. Be nice to the rice.

CAN I GET A KUSTOM TYPE-R EMBLEM WITH LED BULIT IN?
BlueF 02-06-2004 12:44 AM

How funny... was just thinking how much I prefer the Momo (WRX) to the STi wheel.

Any thoughts/plans on a aesthetics mods for that bad boy?

Perhaps a momo sticker?

I mostly kid, but I like your idea. : )
liigod 02-06-2004 03:45 AM

how about a GTR type-S one?
NeoteriX 02-06-2004 05:16 AM

I like how the momo wheel will soon match my momo shifter :D
pilfflip 02-06-2004 09:21 AM

I saw the steeriong wheeel to a Forrester the other day and on it's steerig wheel it had a huge Metallic pearl Blue Subaru symbol in the middle of it. I liked the look but I wish there was something very similar to that only more performance like, it was a little to plain for my taste just the way it was.

Swap yours for an '04 WRX wheel. They changed the logo to red.

Wouldn't making Prodrive or STi badges be infringing on copyright laws?
crystalhelix 02-08-2004 06:19 PM

Probably
Since I am not really a company and don't plan on producing millions of these I am not really concerned. I'd just like to see how many people would be interested. From the poll its seems most would rather keep their momo emblem, but I could approach the problem as it arises.

Thanks,
Justin

i was thinking along these lines as well. i would like to see a variety of diffferent colors for the oem "momo" emblem. personally i want red to match some of the accents in my interior (red gauge needles).

I don't think that emblem comes off... cause it's part of the airbag unit...

replacing the sticker w/ another brand name would be like debadging the trunk and replacing it with a chevy emblem..

The Impreza "i". like the emblems in blue and pink for the front of the car, but for the steering wheel.

what about the generic subaru stars logo? i think that'd look better than any of your other choices.

I'd buy one. The stars or the "i" logo would be cool.
Dendrobium 03-23-2004 12:19 AM

HOW-TO: Custom steering wheel badge change on a budget...$$
Thanks to Hank3 for the idea :D

1. Get your favourite logo done up in vinyl, sized to the diameter of your steering wheel badge.

2. Apply the vinyl using a soapy water solution (much like how windshield banners are applied). This way, you can take your time to get it exactly centered, exactly horizontal, and get almost zero air bubbles.

3. Slowly and carefully, work the soapy solution out from under the badge using a hair-dryer (set on low heat) to speed up the drying process. Apply pressure from the CENTER of the vinyl OUTWARDS towards the edges to avoid trapping any air bubbles.

4. As the soapy solution works its way out and dries, the vinyl will adhere/cling better. At this point, apply slightly higher heat (use the high heat setting on your hairdryer) to get the badge to conform to the convex shape of the badge. Apply slightly more pressure this time, but again, always work your way from the CENTER of the vinyl OUTWARDS towards the edges to avoid trapping any air bubbles.

As I found out, the stock MOMO is actually "raised". Again, the heat used to conform to the convex shape also helps you to "emboss" the MOMO raised lettering very tightly.

5. Wait for the soap solution to fully evaporate, and remove the vinyl decal's clear transfer overlay. Clean it up and shine it up using some wax, and you're done! Here you can see the "embossed" MOMO that results. Love it or hate it, I think it's kind of a cool effect  - and only noticeable upon close-up inspection.

Tada! now get a matching shift knob and you're done!

cheers!

(again, thanks to Hank3 for the great idea! :alien: )

Dendro - you da man!!! Thanks so much for doing this - can't wait to get my this week. I'll post pics in the Member's Gallery with my new decals
scrappydoo 03-23-2004 04:19 AM

I'm pretty sure you can get the momo badge off of there. Didn't Easystreet pull the badge off of their steering wheel?
Hank3 03-23-2004 08:46 AM

But I think if you pull off the momo badge, there would be nothing to stick the new decal on would there?
S.G.D 03-23-2004 09:10 AM

ok, new plan....get a WRX steering wheel and get a cool sticker like that!

badass!

Well... if you made a silver Momo logo (Ver7 style) the little embossments would look normal... :D

It would be sweet if you could find some sort of different thing to stick in it's place.

Or...... would the same mod we do to change the color of the subaru badge work for this badge, hmmmm..........
MistaOctamopus 03-23-2004 11:16 AM

I'd like a lil turntable I could spin around lol. *scratch scratch* or an octopus emblem.
Dendrobium 03-23-2004 03:50 PM

thrdeye - the complete "prodrive" word did not turn out as well as Hank3 and I anticipated (it reaches the size limit of what our particular vinyl cutting machine could cut accurately and consistently)

IOTW, I don't think you'd be happy with it

The "P_" worked out quite well however (P= pearl white, line= cyan blue)

is there any chance someone could make a logo just like the stock steering wheel logo but with red / silver / blue lines instead of the yellow? this way the embossed "momo" letters would match up with the new sticker?

also is there any chance that someone would sell some of these? my local sign shops charges a $40 minimum to do ANYTHING and i really don't want to pay them a ton of money to cover up that yellow momo badge. i want to cover it because i have all of my gauges with red needles now so the yellow is just out of place.

if anyone is up for making these i would take a prodrive emblem (like the pics) in silver and red or a new cover for the stock momo badge with red or silver striping. i'm dying over here, someone help!!
Tobey 03-23-2004 11:23 PM

also i was thinking. if this was to be a permenant thing you could sand the momo logo off, apply the sticker and maybe clear coat over the top of everything to keep it fresh?

just an idea that may NEVER work!

I mostly agree, but then again Subaru themselves did that. The 2.5RS' wheel was made by Momo, but there was no Momo logo. Just "SUBARU" ... So in my opinion, that nice red-stitched wheel would've been nicer with a Momo logo. But that wasn't the deal I guess...

Instead of replacing the logo, I replaced the car around it. I upgraded to an STi but it is nice to see this thread has lead people in different directions. Some of the pics on this thread turned out some sweet steering wheels. It looks like the voting says most members will be sticking with their momo tags.

So no one ever found out of these stock momo emblems can be completely removed. Another question, if my emblem has scratches in it can momo replace it?
