How were the Kooks in the Wet ? part 2

buzz313th 09-22-2005 02:50 PM
So umm weren't we talking about how great the Kooks are?
I need more assurance that I made the right tire choice for the next few months. ;-)
Seb,

The Kooks are by far the best tire in the rain.... and in the dry...

Hows that???

You happy...

good thing it was my own thread that we hijacked ... love our rambling discussions ... :-)
PKer 09-22-2005 02:56 PM

Thanks, I feel better now. I picked them up last night, boy my garage smells nice, it smells like victory!
makofoto 09-22-2005 03:04 PM

Don't let it go to your head ... half of that smell belongs to me!

Glad to have you on my Team next weekend!

Next week is our SCNAX Cup event ... Teams of 4 drivers ... 4 cars ... only three of the cars can have the same drive train. Over 2 days ... everyone gets 6 runs in each of the four cars ... fastest three for each car counts ... 48 runs per team are added up to get the winner. Drivers and Cars are Indexed ... Street Tire Index applied where necessary, ie. R tire class cars running on street tires. I think we're up to 11 teams so far. Two Team Blew Teams ... "Team Blew It," and "Team Blow By U." Or was that Team Blows U ... ... glad we're on the other team!
To say that Mako needs to focus more on driving than anything else is true. But unfortunately, he has not had the opportunity to get a baseline set-up that he is happy with. Once we think he has found that baseline, we find an issue with his car or his decision to run in a particular class gets changed.
I think he can do better also! which is my whole point!

However, I find it hard to believe that in 2-3 years he's got no baseline. Come on. I may be from where it snows, but I ain't that dumb. He's got no baseline becuase he hasn't settled on anything and just driven!
Mako is a great driver, definately one of the best in our region.
So it's the car's fault? Got it. (Shall I post result links? ;) ) This is not a slight to his driving... this is just that he's been chasing mods more than his driving... which you seem to have backed me up above.
He is also one of the most Die Hard Autox enthusiasts I know. He enjoys nothing more than to think about autocross all day. (Which also explains his activity here on the forum.)
Never questioned that... at all. Never brought into the discussion, nor factored into anything about the guy. My focus has been... his driving vs his mods. In the 2-3 years he's owned his wagon, I can't think of one time where he HASN'T been changing things? It gives him no time (as you said) to concentrate on the driving... again... my point. He needs to stop worring about what others are doing... what others are saying, what others are playing with... and just drive! It really is all that simple. :)
If it wasn't for Mako's constant R&D on his car, us Suby drivers down here in SoCal, would have to do the R&D ourselves.... So..... It is quite helpful that he is the "Tweaker" when it comes to setup. I for one have been wanting to test the idea of "No Bar" in the front, but I was just too lazy to do the work. Well... at the last practice I got the chance to drive Mako's car with no Front bar, 12mm front bar, 17mm bar and 19mm stock bar, all because of Mako's energy and enthusiasm to tweak with his car...... Without this, I probably would have never gotten around to doing it on my car.

Thanks Mako....

Great, fantastic... more reassurance that he's jsut toying witht he car instead of focusing on his driving.

Changes every day between one run and the next don't make a driver fast. He needs to settle on something and drive it. It's been a couple years... and IMHO... in a couple years, he should have had the car pretty well sorted now instead of playing around with bars this late in the ownership.

I say the above not to be the bad guy... not at all. But I beleive HE CAN be faster... if he stops worrying about what others are doing and changing things. If that's not caring, dunno what is.

I make notes ... I lose notes ...

Tom Berry told me that it's a good thing to drive a lot of different cars ... improves ones driving ... Hey! ... I'm doing that ... just using my own car!

... supposedly a good driver only needs two corners with a car to get the most out of it ...

Thanks for your concern ... I'm happy, I'm having fun ... I guess I'm just not as focused nor goal oriented as most of you. Be happy that I won't be yet another Southern CA threat. :D ... not our fault we get to practice all year long, with just enough wet weather ... unlike AZ. :p ... Josh, come visit us again when it starts raining ...

I'm not in dissagreement with you KC... Just helping to explain why it is this way and the fact that we are very appreciative of Mako's efforts. By the way, if Mako had charged every time he has alligned someones car down here, he would honestly have a well established alignment shop....

If Mako was any different, there would be a large void in the AutoX Community here in SoCal.. ;)

You need to understand and read between my lines here... If the R&D on Mako's car stopped and he concentrated on just driving, then Team Blew would lose it's Suby Research department.... and we don't want that to happen now, do we????? ;)

To get "the most" out of it??

Hey, that's what I'm doing wrong! I am bothering to go to more than one autocross a year!! I should just go to the Nationals Warmup, drive the first 2 corners, park the car, and then win Nationals...

Seriously, Tom Berry is an awesome driver. But I really have to question some of his advice to you. Not that it's necessarily "wrong", but if you take his advice as pure gospel, you're doing yourself (and his advice) a disservice. What works well for one driver doesn't necessarily work for another.
BlkWRXWag 09-22-2005 04:15 PM

I <3 Mako:)

Mako is Mako... a hugely enthusiastic AX'er, a tinkerer and all around good guy. To some, half the fun is just tinkering with the car. As long as he's having fun, it's all good. KC is right and Jeff is right, but in the end is comes down to what Mako enjoys doing.
makofoto 09-22-2005 04:15 PM

... don't worry ... we don't take it all for gospel ... although we were hoping you guys would. :-)

... you've never seen such under steering post apex slides as when Tom drove my car for the first time! But the late braking into the corners was very impressive! :-)

I Am already psyched for next year ... glad you guys will think my car is a scatter developed 99 lb weakling ... must pace myself must pace myself ... let's see, Nationals start two weeks later next year ... so still more then 365 days left to go! :-(
PKer 09-22-2005 05:41 PM

I love autocross!
Seriously, I go to sleep thinking about the last course I drove. It's lke counting sheep, usually I can't get through the whole course before the sandman comes.

I don't mess with setup too much mostly becuase I'm lazy, but also because I still think I need to drive better so if I make a change I can quantify that change. If I'm not consistent I can't tell if a change made any difference. At this point I'm getting there, but I've still never made a run where I didn't totally screw up at least one obstacle. Maybe there is no such thing as a perfect run?

The biggest change I made this year was getting a new pressure gauge....turns out I was running 10psi more than I thought due to a faulty gauge it was like that for months! The car doesn't spin so often now.
