Issue with STi Key

I got my STi key this past weekend and I went today to get it cut. From some post here I decided not to go to the dealer. So I went to a locksmith shop. They wouldn't cut it. And wouldn't even give me a reason. So I left. Went to the hardware store. And this got more confusing. They asked what car I had. Then they said it would not work because the main key had a chip inside the base and the cut STi key would not turn the ignition. That it was a safty feature for the car and only dealers could make such copies. She said it was inside the little rubber part, which I know is just like that for grip. So I said, I highly doubt these key, have such a feature. So then they go cut it. A younger guy comes back and tells me, If it doesn't work you have to go to the dealer and get the code sequence for it. I was ok sure. They didn't charge me anything so that was cool, but they said if it didn't work it was not their problem and I was on my own. No problem. I got to my car, it was a little rough, on one side, maybe cause of the double side cut but it opens the doors, trunk, and starts the car. After it all, it works. So much technology today confuses so many people...

There's no chip in it.
I took mine to Lowes and they cut it for free. It works just fine.
I have had a few security guys ask what kind of car I have when I put my keys through the metal detector!

He looked at me, kinda with a pissed look on his face and said, "THIS IS WHAT I DO, I CUT KEYS".... Then when he was all done, he handed it to me and said, "Why would you pay $20 for a blank key, I've got em for 99 cents?".... pwned

I like the locksmith guy. We need more people like that at the university budget commitee.

 That's so funny!! You should have acted upset like you got ripped off by paying $20 for the STi key. Although now that I think about it, it is kind of scary that you can just take your car key to any locksmith and all they have to do is make a copy of it. I mean, a lot of other car companies use some type of security chip, why not Subaru?

Honda didn't start using the chips until Honda and Acura were at the top of the Most Frequently Stolen Cars list.
As for the lock/keysmith:
I always have to stop myself when I go to a shop and start telling the guys what to look out for on my car. The owner and half the techs there are racers themselves, so when I bring my little stiffy sprung ****box in and ask them to mind the fact that it's lowered when aligning, and to put the directional tires on properly.. I usually end up appologizing for being a dick. They are the experts afterall... I'm just some shmuck who thinks he's hot **** when he fixes something without breaking 3 other things. :alien:
While I like the STi keys.. I wouldn't pay that much for one. The 99 cent ones work great.

Just because they work at a store does not mean they are experts. Better safe than sorry.

I got one for my 98 L, they said at the dealer it wouldn't work, because the key was larger, so I took it to home depot, and they said it wouldn't fit their machine. So I scanned my original in my computer, printed that out again, and taped it to my STI key. Went to my bench grinder, and used the corner of the wheel to grind down to the picture of the key on the printout....
Works great! Had to thin it a bit to make it work in the trunk, but it works like a charm! :D

The locksmith told me the exact same thing when I asked him to cut my STi key as well. We sat there and argued for a good 5 minutes until finally he went to the back and pulled out some book that apparently lists all the cars and what sort of key they use. Turns out I was right, so he cut the key.
Mine was also a little tricky to use initially, but now it's fine.

That's not always the case. I've had a shop screw up my CV joints twice already, and I have to take it back in to get them fixed AGAIN. The worst part is: the shop is called CV Masters. The name implies a knowledge of a CV joint... :furious:
Anyway, it all depends on the shop. Some of them have experts and people who know what they're doing, but others just have people.

the reason most places look at you wierd and won't cut them is because the part your cutting is made of steel. not just mirror plated like other keys. if u look at the edges where it was cut u see that it is steel all the way through, look at other keys, they're brass or some other softer metal. most places don't hav the cutter wheel to cut steel keys, they're kinda rare, u need to go places like a motorcycle dealership (those keys r steel) or apparently home depot has the correct tools to cut them. my friend (hitokiri) and i both got them for our RS's and no1 would touch them so i dremeled them myself by hand (first one was scary) but in the end they both came out very nice and work just fine. i love my STi key, just a warning tho for everyone who has them, in the winter if yur keys r cold this key may snap off, the steel is more brittle then the other keys and will snap rather than bend. other than that this key is sick (i love titanium) :D

Go to Lowe's. All they do is do a quick check to see which "cartridge" they should use for it. Original goes in one cartridge, STI blank in another. Push button. Perfect fit. No charge.

I just got my key and went to Lowe's. Had to tell the guy that I wouldn't ask for compensation if the key didn't work. Took about 10 seconds and it was a perfect fit. Had to push it in and out of the trunk lock a few times before it would work, but now all is good.

lol, i bought one awhile ago before the STi came out, and i brought it to the dealer with my key number:
"we can't cut this key for you"
"?"
"its not a factory key"
"its a factory key from japan, it works on all subarus of this model year"
".......its steel, we can't cut steel in our machine"
so then i bring it to a locksmith
"is this thing steel?"
"um i dunno, i think it has a steel tip and a brass blade"
"hm.....hey earl, can we cut this if its steel?"
"we can cut anything, just do it and stop bothering me"
3 bucks later.......
"there you go, lemme know if it doesn't work"
"what will you do if it doesn't work? the key's 25 bucks"
"........i dunno, but lemme know if it doesn't work and we'll figure something out"
and ofcourse, it worked.

Got mine done at Home Depot, they usually charge a couple of bucks but the locksmith guy was really cool and refused my money. Just be sure if you go to HD with it that they have the newer style key cutting machine which has a bunch of slots for inserting the keys and no externally visible mechanism. If they have the old-style lathe machine it might not work.

The sti key is not made of STEEL Period! I am a locksmith and have been doing this She!t since i was 10 years old. The key is a mixture of nickel and brass. If it was steel a regular key machine would not be able to cut it and you would have to use a Flat steel key machine and it would take like 5 mins. each side to cut. This key can be cut on a regular keymachine with a standard blade. I have cut so many of these damn keys its ridiculous. Of course I am the best locksmith around here, (concieted I know) but thats the way I feel.
Also once again as I have posted on this topic numerous times. Please do yourself a favor and go to a locksmith shop.
Our machines are better quality some may not look like it but they are. Plus a locksmith is going to calibrate his machine quite often which even though its a PITA it ensures a properly cut copy. And, when you have a properly cut copy you can make a working copy off that try getting yourself a properly working copy off of your hardware store cut STi key. Chances of it working are 50/50.
My keys work 98% of the time and the 2% that dont work are because I am working with a worn out key, a hardware store copy, aworn and broken in half key, or a hand filed key that some jackleg made for this person who bought a car at the auction with no keys.
Chris

You definately want to take it to one that uses those automated machines. The hand driven ones come out too rough and can damage the lock's tumblers.

The only reason it would come out rough on a manual is because either the blade is dull and damaged or the idiot behind the machine has no clue on how to use it. The reason for automatic machines at hardware stores are so any idiot like you can cut a freakin key.
Did you know that an improperly cut key can damage the waffers in your ignition too. Or that lack of lubrication (WD40) in your locks can help wear out your waffers quicker I mean afterall they are only made outta brass.
Automatic machines suck! I have one at the job and I can cut 15 house keys before 1 key is cut on that damn thing but Like I said thats becasue I am the best.
As for the dremeling yes you took a very big risk and you probably wont be able to copy off that key because it is way off. But hey that was your decision. Just because one locksmith refuses I am sure they arent the only gang in the area.
My company has 15 locations and they just purchased the company I use to work for. I come in there and flip a script on there ass by producing the largest profit outta all the 15 shops. Never been done before. I also have write-ups on my shop saying how I am the best to deal with. So trust me I know what I am doing.
Also as for the liability issue. If you came in to my shop i would cut this key for free being a club member. However if say average joe walks in with his $20 key blank. I would tell him I will cut it but will not be responsible if it doesnt work or something happens. Thats now your decision if you want to take the chance but I hold no responsibility if I mess it up.

i agree, my friend locked his keys in his volvo once,
a lock smith just happened to be shopping at our store.
he looked into the car,( keys were on front seat) went into his van, cut a key from memory, came back to the car and opened it right up..
i've not gone to a hardware store for my keys since....

Went to Home Depot once with my then integra Ti key. They F'ed it up of course. Went back to the seller and told him the key would not work. He then handed me a new one :D
By now, I know not to bring the key to HD. Took it to 99 Ranch Market and cut it for $1.99, flawless. Two years later, I went back to the Ranch Market and have them cut my STi key.
Enough with the 'why subaru doesnt have a chip' question. Subaru doesnt have it, subaru decided not to have it, we have a subaru that doesnt have it. Now, the only thing we can do is to get an alarm with code hopping technology. :disco:
