I got a non-sti (regular black key) cut at my locksmith, for free btw, and it works perfectly.
My dealer said "we can't cut it cause it's steel..." after they lost my ENTIRE FRICKIN' KEYRING, car key, club key, rack key and alarm box. Then they gave me these ultra crappy replacement copies, only one of which sort of worked (the 3rd one was a 3rd generation copy cause they sent out the black key at the quicky-mart down the street to be coped from a cut-by-number one).
Needless to say I made them send me 2 blanks, which my locksmith laughed at and said "what, do they have a plastic lathe at the dealer" and cut it in seconds with a normal manual lathe. He then spent about 30 seconds with a file and such, and did the job right.
BTW, I noticed that the valet key is THICKER than the others, this is why it doesnt fit in the glove box. The ridges are identical between all the keys. I was trying to figure out this master/valet system by the ridges by looking at the copies of copies of copies (they all looked different!!) but in the end i just threw them all out :D

Also once again as I have posted on this topic numerous times. Please do yourself a favor and go to a locksmith shop.
. . .
My keys work 98% of the time and the 2% that dont work are because I am working with a worn out key, a hardware store copy, aworn and broken in half key, or a hand filed key that some jackleg made for this person who bought a car at the auction with no keys.

Does anybody know how to make a switchblade style key? Like the vw and audis.. Those are pimp %^&*!

Man I tell ya.. I hear too many horror stories about Sti keys... lol... Take your key to the F'n dealer and ask them to cut it.... If they give any crap, tell them to call service at Pitre Subaru in Phoenix... They know how to do the job right...
... As for the stupid chip... F the chip.. who cares??.. get an alarm if security is THAT much of an issue... I prefer the simplicity that if I ever lose a key, I can get one right away and not have to wait for a "programmed" one... i.e. @ 2am, when there are no dealers open...

My dealership did it for free also. No problems.
Why would you pay some Home Depot place, and take the chance of them messing it up?

got mine cut at the suby dealer today. they ran the key cutter over the original 3 times, brushed it off and told me to try it. it worked great on the first try without any issues. when i came in and asked how much he said "nothing, it's your key, i just cut it." hi ho. also, its not just the feel/weight/look of this thing. turning the ignition feels different! so get yourself or a friend a nice gift this holiday season.....and no worries!

those are friggin expesive keys, most are laser cut. i washed cars at my dads dealership this summer and a guy with a new VW was test driving a used bmw M5 and dropped one of his keys he was all scared cause it was $125 to get it replaced, and we have a '97 mazda there to that the keys were locked in to get a blank key was $125 then it had to be sent away to be "laser" cut in japan or somewhere

i don't think these r quite as high tech as that. i think that these r just the basic housing with a keyblank that fits the subaru groove pattern.

When I had my STI key cut it took them some time before the could get the large end to clear the cutting machine. It can be cut just taken some time. Mine works great.( True Value Hook it up Free):D

All this talk about "chips" and "laser" cutting makes me even more happier I have a Plain-Jane (STi), good 'ole dealer cut key with no fancy sheet.
