low profile floorjack

im currnetly looking for a low profile floorjack that is low enough to be slid under the front end of the car to utilize the central jack point. i figure auto-x and track guys have their favotites since wheels are always being switched. what brand would you recommend? the aluminum ones are cool but i dont want to spend $200 on a jack. some help would be great.

Why does it have to be low profile? My car is low and my Craftman fits fine. I had a problem with a different car I used to own and it was too low... that's when you drive up onto 2 boards to get the clearance.
$60 for jack and stands... AND 2 pieces of wood.

Yep, I have the same jack - except mine cost less, because I already had the jack stands. It came in a decent plastic case & weighs about the same as the fancy "racing" jacks. With two chunks of 2 x 10 to drive onto, clearance is no problem.

Um.. its lowest is 5.5".. I think there are a few of us here that don't have 5.5" of clearance anymore.. as opposed to the jack from harbor freight which has a saddle of 3.5"

After two years of driving the Integra up onto blocks... I got a little tired of it. Plus... even with the wood I couldn't always clear the jack points! I had just under 4 inches of ground clearance in race trim.

If the subaru is too low for a craftsman jack, then the a-arms will be going UP from the center of the car instead of even or down. That's WAYYY too low.

What KC said. If you're running more than a 2" drop in front, the cars likely too low for optimal handling. With my front wheel arch gaps measuring approx. 13.5", my cheapo jack has approx. 1/2" clearance, with my car on the 2 x 10's.

i'm pleased with my harbor freight jack. it doesn't fit under the front of kc's car though. the body of the jack hits the front splash sheild/etc before getting far enough under the car. works great at the side jack points or the rear differential though.

I've had that Sears jack for quite a while. Works fine on most cars, although not my friend's M3. It definitely would be nice to have a jack that I know would work on any car I'm likely to work on in the next 20 years, which the Harbor Freight jack is more likely to do.
That, and the Harbor Freight jack is nicer. You don't have to remove the handle to lower it, and it takes fewer strokes to get it up, which is important as you get older.
Not sure if all that is worth the additional $75 though. I did see that jack in a Harbor Freight catalog for $90. Anyone interested might want to check a recent paper catalog before buying....

 Huh?
I can't fit the harbor freight, or the craftsman $150 one of the howrbrultzer whateveritis $600 one under the front of my car. Its not an issue of saddle height, but an issue of the actual height of the jack body not fitting under the front part of the subframe.
I have to drive up on wood.
My car is not too low.

Do a search on the net for AC Jacks. They're the best and used by most rally teams.

Doesn't seem like that pimpy jack would work either ;)
According to my calculations
Saddle Height - 3.14" - That would work
Frame Height - 6.3" - BZZZT My lower subframe has much less then 6" of clearance off the ground
"The frame is made of high-strength steel"
Plus I wouldn't want to drag that puppy to the track!

the Harbor Freight one works perfectly fine on the side of my car, but i drive on some blocks if i want to jack the front.
The only thing that hits on the front of mine is the knob for the handle if I don't use the blocks and am on my 215/45 16s. Otherwise it fits fine for my 17's w/out the blocks

How "long" is the body of the HarborFreight jack? I.e. how much distance from the saddle to the pivot where the jack handle is?
My cheapo Sears jack is not long enough...the pumping action of the jack handle is interfered by the stock front plastic skid plate.

Tom,
The jack refuses to hold pressure anymore. This is not uncommon for the Harbor Freight jacks. I've known a coupld other rally teams that have had similar issues with their jacks.
It's probably a seal issue, but getting spares from Harbor Freight has always been an issue. The jack has been bled, etc.
Just sharing our experience. As with most purchases, you get what you pay for. The AC jacks are expensive, but they're rugged, work great and have spares available. There's a reason you seen WRC and North American rally teams using them.

I've got the aluminum Craftsman linked three posts up. If you are in the Craftsman Club, you get an additional 10% off, even during sales. Mine ended up being somwhere around $160.
As KC noted, that two pumps is to bring it up to height. Once it gets loaded, it resorts to the number of pumps similar to any other quality jack. It is very well put together, and the two part handle works well in confined areas; just take off the top section.
I can reach all the way in to the center lift point with mine when I roll it under the side. I can't get in from the front. This is on an un-lowered wagon with stock wheels and 225-50-16 ES100s. The pivot is just behind the wheel, so the first few pumps are very short. Just enough to lift it a bit, and then use normal strokes. The rear of the body limits it going under much further.
One nice feature of this (and I assume many) jack, is that the valve controlled by the jack handle is inside the pivot. This way, you don't have to remove the handle and loosen the valve to lower the car. Just turn the handle and down it comes.

It looks and functions very similarly to the Harbor Freight Jack. same two piece handle, same spinning of the handle to lower it as well. I've heard the HF jacks are not hard to service.

I saw an story on yhe net with a comparo of floor jacks, the only aluminum one in the test was form Harbor Freight FWIW.
This was evidently fairly recent- my buddy told me they had the "my" jack in there and that it did very well. I'll try to chase down more details.
How did the harbor freight fair in the comparo you saw? Link?

i just read the vorshlag review of the harbor freight jack and was impressed overall but somewhat skeptical of the reported saddle failures. i think i might just go ahead and buy the $200 aluminum sears jack. if it breaks at least it has a lifetime warranty, that and the $60 greater price over the harbor freight jack really isnt that much in the long run..

Big Sky,
Where did you get your jack pad? Got a link?
Thanks!
Did you cut a groove out of it? I'm sure it would work fine- anything that doesn't crush the pinch weld would work. One guy made a really fancy setp w/ wood- made them for his jack stands as well!

Nope, no tools to do so, but within a use or two there was a pretty good groove pressed into it.

Don't assume that everything labeled Craftsman has a lifetime warranty. I would be really suprised if thie did. I know that my torque wrenches and quiuck clamps that are labeled as craftsman and sure seem like hand tools to me don't have the lifetime warranty. Just FYI

Screwdrivers and hand tools (non-power) iirc are the only Craftsman stuff with lifetime. Power tools and precision equipment usually have a year. I see that there is no warranty info online for the Craftsman jacks.
I also see that they've got some serious jacks... 4 ton air/hydrolic for $650

Turns out it wasn't a test/comparo. Just a one page pictorial w/ the craftsman jack, another similarly priced jack (green) and a $1000 aluminum jack. Was called "get floored". Gave a few stats about each (including price), but no tests- sorry- false alarm.
I think the jack is only a one year warranty IIRC.

Found another nice jack when I was at the Tire Rack for an auto-x. Kinda pricey but looks very high quality.

Sorry to revive this thread but my Craftsman SUV jack just developed a leak and I'm gonna return it to get a better jack. Does anyone happen to have this one?

I can a credit for the broken one and then dish out another $50 or so to get the one above. I totally forgot about the Craftsman Club card I have so maybe they'll let me use that too :)
