New DIY headlight, corners mod.
Well I just finished this mod on my RS. Its a pretty simple idea, open up the headlight and paint the chrome piece that is NOT part of the projector. This can be done to the RS and WRX (it should make the wrx look alot more like the HID option).

are there any benifits by doing that mod? like your headlights get brighter or something?
| pbnj9786 | 05-11-2001 05:11 PM |
prob. no benefits except giving the car a more JDM look.

this is a looks only mod. you do not do anything to the projector either so it should have no negative effect.

OOOO I like that! are the headlight held togeather with the same goo as the side lights?

Note: BE CAREFUL with that glass! I chipped it a couple times while trying to pry the entire thing open.
Also, I forgot to mention, you can do WHATEVER color YOU want. I just used black spray paint because I wanted that mean look (kinda looks like this [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif[/img] ) [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I was going to do this mod, but thought it might look like my car has blackeyes [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/blackeye.gif[/img] Doesn't look all that bad afterall. hmmm.. seems tempting now. Did you use glossy black paint? Hi-temp paint? I'm sure it get real hot in there.

very impressive!!!!! thanks for the idea!!!!!

I used a dull black. I wasnt sure how the high gloss would come out so i just stayed with the flat

hmmmm...more things to paint??? looks like im going to have to take a trip out to the local subaru dealer...hehehe
| mykrrrr | 05-12-2001 01:27 PM |
Looks brilliant!!!
What type of "goop" did you use to seal it all back up???
I'd try high temp flat black because it gets pretty hot inside there.
I think I'm gonna do this mod!!! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

I just got done doing this myself and am very pleased at how the car looks now. Not that I didn't LOVE it before. I only did the headlights though. Andrew, I am curious, how do the corners look at night?

I'll try to get you a pic tonight

Cool, Andrew. I wanna see this in person at the next meet. =)
| Andrew | 05-14-2001 10:50 AM |
mykrr I'll post it up on the board so everyone will know how to do it....
the wheels are 5zigen 5zr copse (im thinking about going to superlegs though cause these things weigh 22lbs each). the wing is an adjustable 22b replica spoiler which im also thinking about changing (for a SYMS spoiler).
give me a couple minutes to do the step by step stuff.
edit: yes the corners are painted, heres a pic at the dumb album i did of the difference, http://www.zing.com/picture/p0ee4f62c76168e9248e4fdcbe3358c0b/fe88995f.jpg.orig.jpg

OK heres how you do this:
Tools needed (or at least the ones I used):
10mm socket wrench
Screwdriver
Needle nose plyers
hair dryer (i used 2 to quicken the melting time of the goo)
silicone or some form of sealant to seal the headlights back up
spray paint of the color of your choice
newspaper (or anything that you have that you can paint on)
sandpaper (suggested but not necessary)
Total time it took me:
a couple hours
1) Open up hood and take out grill. This is very easy, just insert a screwdriver or something of that nature into the 2 holes near the ends of the grill. Then pull it out.
2) unscrew the corners. There is only 1 screw holding them in and that is on the main headlights at the top.
3) unplug the headlights and unscrew the headlights. there is 4 bolts (2 where the grill was, and 2 where the corner was)
4) I used needlenose plyers for this part, but somehow you need to take off those 4 metal clips on the headlights holding glass housing on.
5) (and the fun part [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]) Get a chair and sit down and turn on that hair dryer. I started off on the flat edge, I thought it might be easier to pry it open from that spot, but do whatever way you want. It takes awhile for that goo to heat up so be PATIENT!!! I chipped my glass a couple times while trying to pry it open too early.
6) once you have the glass off, there is a screw on the chrome piece that you will be painting, its very small and near the pointy side of the light.
7) remove the chrome piece carefully. it has 2 notches that attach to the plastic housing. youll have to pull a bit, but just dont go hercules on it [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
8) once you have it removed you have the option of sanding it a bit to ensure that the paint will stick on better. now place it on newspaper or cardboard or whatever.
9) spray it. if you dont know how to use spray paint, then practice on some wood or something
10) let it dry
11) once its dried, make sure you ahve all the chrome covered, if you want do another coat.
12) put the chrome piece (which is now whatever color you want) back in.
13) its a good idea to remove all that original goo and put in some new stuff, or reheat the odl stuff and stick it togehter and silicone the outside so that no water can get in.
14) screw back in the headlight and corners, and put back in the grill
15) enjoy [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

hairdryerless mod variation
For anybody interested in this mod, or the DIY clear corner lens mod, I discovered a less time consuming and noisy method for getting your goo hot.
Simply set your oven to 175-200deg. and bake your lights for 15-20 min. Take them out, (careful, they'll be hot!) and pull them apart. When you are ready to put everything back together, put the pieces back together as best you can while the goo is cool, then put it all back in the oven for another 15 min. I did it to my corner lenses this weekend, and it worked like a charm.

I used the same process mentioned above, or at least very close. I just used flat black spraypaint, a good 3 coats covered the chrome well.
It looks a bit weird in those pics, all of the pics I have dont do it any justice. It looks really great in person, real aggressive, and exactly what I wanted without spending the big bux on a headlight conversion.
As for the oven trick. I have heard of people doing that, I was a bit too scared to try it though. So I used a hairdryer.
The only think that I think could be illegal about this mod is the fact that my turnsignals light-up clear, not amber. But I have had clear turns in my civic for about 8-9 years and never been hassled.
hope this helps, I am thrilled with the results.
I just wonder what it would have been like if I painted them WRblue instead???

but someone backed into me on the pass. side, and i was trying to hide it in the pics ;)
However, that being said, I will try to get one this weekend, 'cause I am installing my exhaust, and i am going to want to take some pics of that process too. So hopefully I can get a front shot up soon. maybe without all the glare, and maybe even a lit-up one.

New DIY headlight mod
Andrew-
Can you please post the pics on a new photo server since the other one is down? I'd really like to see how this looks. I'm just a little fuzzy on what part of the light you actually painted, though. By saying "chrome part" I'm thinking you painted the reflector, but that makes me really wonder how it wouldn't effect the light output of the headlights. I'm hoping the pictures will help me understand when I see them.

I did the oven thing ,,200dg 20 mins. but i had the chrome pieces all ready painted. What i did was go to the junkyard and get a set of busted up headlights ($20.00) just make sure the trim pcs arent busted. Then heat um up, pull the trim pcs out,and paint em.Let dry .Then go to your car remove the lites and bulbs,Heat em up. pull em apart(this is were it gets good lol)take out your trim pcs(one screw),put the painted ones back in while its still hot(gloves are a must),then put the lense back on(still hot),snap the retainer rings on and yr good to go. Hell, it must look good,my wife even likes it
Rudy
ps.The reason fr the extra set of trim pcs is..If i go to sell the car,i can change it back to stock.Just shake and bake time again.
pss. Do the corner s come apart the same way??? They ve got little tabs i see.Do they have the goo also??

I did my lights about 3 weeks ago, and I have washed my car many times, and drivin in a couple of heavy rain stoms, and there is no moisture in the lights at all. I love them, it gives the car a different/mean look to it.

My WRX now has black headlights:) I also painted the headlight bulb shrouds black. The car looks WAY better. The bulb shrouds take paint well. They make the reflector seem dark until you turn the lights on.

Again thanks andrew,,,,,,,im assuming the clear corners also have trim pcs that you can paint(see previos pics)???
Rudy
I wonder how many guys have done this??Its a great mod.Cheap too:D !! just curious. Also it works on both cars WRX and RS and probably the Legacys too. This outa be in the mods section, moderaters???;)

sidemarkers?
Can you do this to the sidemarkers too??? It seems as thought the headlights and corners are sealed with silicon and the sidemarkers are sealed with glue. I have already done the mod to my headlights, headlight bulb cover, corners, and bumper signals, now I just need to finish the car by doing the sidemarkers. Please PM me if you have the answer!!!

I tryed to do my sidemarkers to match and ended up cracking one, you can do it but will most likly mess it up.
