OFFICIAL RALLY NEW ZEALAND THREAD

I think there will be only 2 or 3 of the top players actually finish. You will see "suprise" privateers finishing high in the points. Engines = boom!
I think the 2 rally per engine reg will be just as damaging to the WRC as the no new tire reg in F1. At least the next few sets of paired rallys, untill everyone collectively slows down.
Going to be interesting!

Considering the altitude difference between Messico and NZ, yeah, it should be interesting.

Loeb/Elena, C Atkinson, the Panizzis, Duval et al may have to get their butts (and motors) burned, miss a key event, and thus learn the hard way about the new rule.
Yay to privateers making waves agaist the factory guys...it's already happened a couple times. Is Rally NZ the place for a privateer on the podium....? Maybe, but the roads are mostly smooth fast and flowing...not exactly the recipe for a rally of attrition.

i could see a team that is doing badly at one rally, ie out of the points, "purposely" trash an engine so they have a new one at the next event.
i could see a team that is doing badly at one rally, ie out of the points, "purposely" trash an engine so they have a new one at the next event.
Schumacher did this in the first GP this year so that he could get a fresh engine for the next race. After winding up out of the points and nearly crashing out he cleverly got assistance from the marshalls to return to the race - and promptly pulled into the garage. So he got a new engine for the next race.
Also it seems the altitude difference between Mexico and NZ would be addressed by a new ecu. Are you not allowed to switch those or is it just the engine?

MS didn't switch engine ... even though he had the option to. And I'm sure that loophole fix in F1 will cover WRC as well.
And you can probably switch ecu - David Lapworth talked about them detuning Petter's engine in Mexico because it was new in development.

Loeb had a new engine in Mexico without time penalty because he cracked his sump on the shakedown stage. I predict a batch of lump hammers finding their way into the mechanics tool kit on future events. Yet more crap rules and loopholes courtesy of the FIA.

There is a link on the offical wrc website stating that Subaru had detuned Petter's engine in Mexico for New Zealand, but Chris was running at a higher power output. It will be interesting to see which engine holds up longer.

According to the regs posted on FIA's website , the two-engine rules are different between the WRC and F1. F1 requires that the same engine be used for two consecutive races, period. This is why Schumacher didn't change out his engine after Australia -- if he had, then he couldn't get a new engine for Bahrain. He would have to use the same one from Malaysia.
The WRC dictates which events will be paired. So, to take an example, assume Francios Duval changes his engine after Mexico, the first of the pair. (Which he likely will, since he retired due to engine trouble.) He goes to New Zealand where the gremlins strike and blow up his engine again. When he shows up in Sardinia with a sparkly new engine he would not suffer a penalty, since NZ and Italy are not paired rallies, so he would get a new engine anyway.
(Actually, as far as I can tell, he won't show up in NZ with a penalty either. This rule appears to only apply to drivers who appear in the final classification for the first rally of the pair. Francois withdrew/retired before the final time control in Mexico, so as the rules read, he should not have a penalty. This loophole was expected to be closed at an FIA meeting last week, but I haven't seen any information on rule changes yet.)
The WRC has one gotcha that F1 does not appear to have in the regs. The rules stipulate that each car will have 8 engines to run 16 rallies with. Which begs the question: since Seb has now used 3 of his 8 engines (one for Monte-Sweden, one for Mexico Shakedown, and one for the rest of Mexico), does he now have to run four events on that engine? Or is he just going to run out of engines before the end of the season and skip the last two rounds?
Oh, one other weird thing I spotted from reading over the FIA regs: it is now required that the driver and co-driver's names appear on the front wing of the car. It may not be big (or readable), but at least now co-drivers do get credit on the car.

Chris retired on SS14 with no oil in the engine. From all I've heard, he will have a new engine for NZ.
I bet Petter's going to be grumpy if he doesn't get more power for NZ.

Speaking of the New Subaru.......
Subaru number one Petter Solberg has admitted that, not only was he not happy with the new 2005 specification Impreza before Mexico, but he wasn't that pleased with it afterwards either, despite having convincingly won the event.
The Norwegian told Crash.net Radio that things still need to be done for him to be completely happy, although he was sure that the team would continue to improve the car and was confident of a good result in New Zealand next month.

No. The engine is sealed before the first of the paired rallies. The only part that can be changed without damaging the seals is the oil pan. The seals are inspected before the start of the second of the pair of rallies, and if found damaged, could result in a 20 second penalty.

Eventful shakedown... It sounds like Kresta may be out after making a mistake on a sixth-gear, 150-kph corner and rolling the car. The damage doesn't look irreparable, but there are safety questions on whether he will be able to compete or not.
Harri Rovanpera broke his suspension when he hit a fence post. It's expected that the mechanics can repair the damage and he should be starting with no problems.
First car on stage in six hours!

Petter thoroughly lost the lead after the last two stages. But considering he was expecting to be a minute down by the end of today I supose being 10 seconds behind isn't that bad.

He's moving up but, Leob is expanding his lead faster. At some point Subaru may just call it and have him settle for 3rd or 2nd and not retire. Going to take some damn fancy driving and some luck to catch Loeb now but, this is rally anything can happen.

Yep, looks like Petter has shot his bolt. He will have to fight for second now.

Even as it stands now, if Petter stays in third and Seb wins, Petter will still be road sweeping in Sardinia.
This has been kind of a strange event for Subaru. They haven't lost time in places where they expected to and did in places that they weren't necessarily. And they've been getting caught out a lot with tire issues.

You guys out there now let us know if this rally looks to be as uneventful as the live times and web reports make it to look now. Has anything interesting happened besides Kresta going out on shakedown ?
If not, the guys on WRCtv are going to have their work cut out for them building the shows. I just don't see Loeb, Solberg or Gronholm risking anything at all tommorow. Going to be a lot of very careful driving tommorow.

Petter hit a turkey as well. He seemed quite apologetic about it.
The first day and a half had a lot of drama with times being traded back and forth. After that most people have been focusing on holding position and getting points rather than challenging for position. It's a sensible move from the perspective of winning the war, but it isn't as exciting to watch. There haven't been any accidents, and very few mechanical problems.
Petter and Marcus have been complaining that their tires aren't as effective as Seb's Michelins. It seems that Michelin is debuting a new tire in NZ.
They say that the new tires should be good in Sardinia as well. We'll see in three weeks' time.

I wonder if the more conservative engine map for NZ effected Subaru's performance. Lapworth has always said SWRT always goes for broke to get in first place, even sacrificing reliability.
Dammit, Xavier Pons beat out al-Attiyah and Arai in GroupN. Impresive drive by Nasser though, he has only had that SpecC for over a month.

Not a single turkey hit shown during the Speed channel version or even a mention of it. This whole rally will take up about 15 seconds on the end of the year review show.

Was it Pirelli tires or did Subaru just didn't get enough of the right tires before the rally?

Michelin introduced a new hard compound tyre for this rally. On top of that, Solberg, Gronholm, Atkinson and Martin chose the wrong tire on day one with the drying roads from the rains Thursday night. Solberg lost the lead on day one and only made up 3.3 seconds after the next few days.
I found the GroupN and PCWRC battle to be quite amazing. Cody Crocker was only 23 seconds down from the GroupA FocusWRC of Warmbold.

It's "tire", don't try and talk/type "British". Unless you copied and pasted that...

Great driving, glad there were no dropouts by the big names. Funniest part of the show was when they were interviewing Markko Martin & asked him about his transmission problems.

Atkinson is showing some good speed, makes me even more glad they canned Mikko.

Judging by your location I'd imagine you're a Brit, in which case that's the way you actually speak and write. The other guy just sounds like a poser.

Lets look to the results so far
Rally Atkinson(2005) Sarrazin(2005) Hirvonen(2004)
Monte Carlo DNS 14th Mechanical retirement
Sweden 19th 13th 9th
Mexico Acident retirement DNS 5th
New Zealand 7th DNS 7th
Points scored 2 0 6
Hardly an improvement for the team so far, great waste of a years experience of WRC for an up and coming driver though. ;)

He sounds like a guy spelling the word as it was designed to be spelled and not in some bastardised format based on the spelling handed down incorrectly via illiterate colonialists. ;)

Isnt this the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club? ;) Seriously, its uncalled for to start a US vs. UK flame war with garbage like you just posted. Move on.
Interviewer Guy: "So Marrko, why did you decide to replace the transmission?"
Marrko Martin: "We are replacing the transmission?" *turns head towards car*
