Radar Cord Pics part 1

Radar Cord Pics
Where on your wrx do you have your cord. I might buy a detector and am trying to figure out where to hide the cord so its not all wrapped up everything in my car.
whpotter 06-16-2005 11:53 AM

Detector
I was in the same predicament as you.

I've heard that some people have wired them into the power supply for the auto-dimming/compass mirror. Also have seen people with an extended cord that they tucked into the trim and then hardwired inside the dash.

I decided to just get a cordless detector (Escort Solo S2). Not having to worry about a cord also makes it easier to move among vehicles. The big downside is $$$ - they are pricier!
DubURX05 06-16-2005 11:55 AM

i heard that that radar turns on and off. is this true and if it is how bad is it?
phwanc 06-16-2005 01:03 PM

Mine runs from the cigarette lighter under the dash, up the pillar and comes out next to the mirror where the detector is. The suby lighter is switched so the radar comes on when you turn the car on.

Thumper23 06-16-2005 01:06 PM

got mine hardwired into the console lights, then a cord running down the a-piller (hidden of course), to under the dash, through the steering column, up into the remote display (V1)
FlyingFishSandwich 06-16-2005 01:33 PM

I have a solo and I love it. I don't know what you mean by "turns off" but it has a motion sensor so if your car is parked for like 20minutes it will turn off automatically. That's good for the battery life since I've forgotten to turn it off a couple of times after getting out of the car. It runs on 2 AA batteries and with my daily use they last a couple of months.

I have mine mounted above the rear view mirror to catch cops scanning over hills and highway center dividers. It works out even though it only comes with suction cups I had to remove that little plastic shade that flips down there though but I used the screw on bracket to hold the detector in place. I go on base and pass through the gate where the cops check my ID(detectors are illegal on military installations) but they never see it. I turn it off anyway so I don't interfere with the tower.
WR^2X 06-16-2005 01:40 PM

My V1's wired into the power for the autodimming mirror/compass, and sits right above the mirror. This is the easiest route IMO, since you only have to run the wires about 8" to the detector. My cigarette lighter has been rewired to be always on so that I can charge my phone while my car is parked, during times when I know I won't be picking it up...
ZoomnWRX 06-16-2005 02:38 PM

valentine 1 man. the power cord is your basic phone cord. i hardwired mine near the fusebox after running it down the a pillar.
hybrid gti 2 06-16-2005 03:09 PM

interesting any pics?
CalcVictim 06-16-2005 03:44 PM

my cord runs under the clock pod and then goes to the fuse panel
vaj 06-16-2005 03:51 PM

hats off to peaty @ scoobymods.com for another excellent mod. By far one of the easiest ways to hardwire your radar detector

CletusTheDwarf 06-16-2005 04:34 PM

unfortunatley i didn't find that plug on my 05 wrx.
vaj 06-16-2005 05:08 PM

no way! damm. Sorry that doesn't work for u  I guess any old key power lead will have to do. good luck.

That is where I put mine. I love it up there. It is not in the way of anything.

Hardwired via my map light switch. No cords seen :)
REX8 06-16-2005 09:38 PM

Its really very easy to wire one...not worth the lost performance of a cordless...IMO of course. No one mentioned that cordless detectors don't perform as well as their corded counterparts...
vaj 06-16-2005 10:42 PM

2.5rsmatt- thats even easier than running it up inside the pillar and headliner from the spade connector.. damm, never thought of that. that is THE place for the detector to be of course.

learn something new everyday
ps rex8 knows what he's talkin bout. Cordless detectors do have less performance. (Speaking from experience here, unfortunately)
CletusTheDwarf 06-16-2005 11:21 PM

but the maplight power isn't switched on with the ignition...right?
WRXnEFFECT 06-16-2005 11:53 PM

My V1 is hardwired into the mirror compass in the map lights area and I removed the center visor that flips down. I also spray painted the suction cups (only the part that doesn't stick to the windshield) with flat black paint to avoid being easily seen by cops and thieves from the outside. Soon I plan on getting a limo tint strip at the top of my windshield to make it even more stealthy.

nope, just gotta remember to turn off the detector..I'd say it's a small price to pay for such a short run of wiring.

Off ignition power from the compass mirror.
CletusTheDwarf 06-17-2005 08:16 AM

sounds nice, but my case is different because i have the escort 8500 with the smart cord, and i don't want to give up the extra mute button and status lights. so i think i'm going to use a switchable power line by the fuse box, and then put the must button and display leds in one of the blanks next to the foglight switch, then run the cord up the apillar to the top and hook it up there. do you know if i would be able to run the wire inside the celing liner?
vaj 06-17-2005 01:55 PM
My V1 comes on when the car is on and goes off when the car is off.
Thats Cool! I don't have the compass/dimming mirror in my STi. Just constant power map lights. Looks like that spot and power source is the hawtness for the v1

Cletusthedwarf.. the way to run the cord is to snake it under the base of the apillar, pull the pillar gently and shove that cord in next to the windshield and up to the head liner. There is plenty of room in the front of the headliner to thread the cord along to the center of the windshield. No need to remove anything, really. Just gently pull down and thread er' on in dere! good luck
HoOn 06-17-2005 02:11 PM

I also have my V1 on the top near the map lights. On my 04 WRX there is a line for the dimming mirror which was not used so I tapped into that. It was very easy to do. If you do not have the Auto Dimming Mirrors doesn't mean that you do not have the wires. Check it out.

WR^2X 06-17-2005 02:35 PM

Yeah, whether or not you have the autodimming mirror/compass, the harness is still up there.
hybrid gti 2 06-17-2005 03:32 PM

interesting that would be good to tap on to
crotchrocket 06-18-2005 10:51 AM

I was just trying to use the autodimming mirror cable to connect my radar detector(Valentine 1). the cable has 3 cables. 2 are red/yellow and 1 black in the middle. does that mean their are 2 positive and 1 ground and that i can tap into either of the red/yellow?
WR^2X 06-19-2005 05:41 PM

What make, model, and year are you working on? One is probably switched power, one is constant power, and one is a ground.
MB38 06-19-2005 06:30 PM

That's exactly what they are... I just forget which is which. I remember that Mike Egan had a great install writeup on his website for the V1... I wonder if it's still up.
Mulder 06-19-2005 07:14 PM

Be careful when connecting to the mirror harness. One of the three wires is from the backup light switch (to undim the mirror in reverse) and will only have 12V in reverse. You don't want to connect your detector to that one. :)
The other two are switched 12 and ground, there is no constant 12. Not sure about the colors you posted, red/yellow should be switched 12V but I don't know why there would be two that color. To be certain use a test meter to identify the proper wires. Be sure to test them in and out of reverse to see which one not to use.

This is what I did... I used the blank next to the cruise control. I actually just put the entire housing into the blank, and fed the wires into the fuse area through there. When I have the time, I'll try to clean it up but for now it fits nicely inside the hole where the blank was. The cord can be easily tucked under the headliner... I didn't have to use glue or ties to hold it up.
johnb732002 06-20-2005 12:59 AM

Here is a pic of my Escort which is wired to the map light. I think I'll change it to the compass/mirror lead so that it turns off with the ignition. The red button is for my garage door opener. I hard wired the clicker to the maplight power, then put a momentary switch in between. Now my garage clicker won't leave marks on my visor, or get lost, or run out of battery.

All WRX/STi models are pre-wired with the compass/dimming mirror wires. The wires/harness are located in the roof light console thing with the map lights.
CletusTheDwarf 06-20-2005 10:28 AM

how do you get the maplight cover off? and do the autodiming mirrors have a wire running all the way from the roof light console thing all the way to the mirror? it just seems like a long way to have a random wire hanging.
ludecrous 06-20-2005 10:35 AM

seems like you could modify the map lights so that both map lights were activated by one grey button, then the other grey button could be used as a switch for garage door opener or radar detector power. This would seem to give a nice clean execution without having to add any buttons. But since I have not done this, i could be full of it.
crotchrocket 06-21-2005 12:27 PM

it's a 2005 saab 92x aero. it should be the same as the 2005 wrx turbo. I already installed the auto dimming mirror. but didnt' know if it makes a difference which positive cable I tapped into.

when you buy the mirror it comes with the cable that runs down to the mirrors. It also comes with a cover to cover the cables.
CletusTheDwarf 06-21-2005 01:53 PM

can someone post a good pic showing how the wires are covered from the maplight to the mirror? and how do you get the maplight cover off?
DieselClown 06-21-2005 05:20 PM

question: I've heard that it's actually preferable to mount it next to the mirror as pictured for a better range. Is this true? It would also be better if you get pulled over anyway since a cop looking down into the car won't be able to see it.
DieselClown 06-21-2005 05:21 PM
can someone post a good pic showing how the wires are covered from the maplight to the mirror? and how do you get the maplight cover off?
the maplight cover pries off with a flathead. Then you unscrew two screws and it pops right out.

Tough to say... If you have it up higher, you get better range, but if you have it behind the black dot matrix, that may decrease range. Having it next to the mirror gets a clear shot through the windshield, but places the detector lower, allowing it to be seen by other drivers (who will probably then follow you, knowing that you have a detector) and (theoretically) decreasing range because it is not up as high.

That being said, mine's above the mirror. Can't see it from outside of the car (and I have the remote display mounted in the clock pod), and the range is more than sufficient.
CletusTheDwarf 06-21-2005 06:21 PM

so you mount yours in front of the black dot array? have you ever not picked up laser when you think you should have? you can probably see them shooting laser at you when you pass them because i think they have to be hitting you from in front of you, not off to the side.
siperwrx 06-21-2005 08:22 PM

I mounted mine on the very bottom left corner of my windshield. I snaked the wire UNDER the steering wheel and along the crease to the right of the stereo cluster. I'll get you a pic soon, very inconspicuous and clean looking.

The only laser alerts I have ever gotten have come from an overhead information sign, and Envoy taillights when brakes are applied. All of the cops that have been pointing things at me have been using K and Ka band radar.
Umphreys448 06-21-2005 11:28 PM

[hijack] My suction cups kept failing and my detector would fall off the dash and onto the floor. I figure this is what eventually broke it (it's broken now). Anyone have any tips as how to keep your detector from falling off the windshield? [/hijack]
WR^2X 06-21-2005 11:34 PM

Mine rests on top of the mirror, with more of the detector in front of the mirror (front being the reflective part) so it has a tendency to tilt forward. This presses up on the suction cups... Seems to be very secure, but I've only had it mounted for about a week.
DieselClown 06-22-2005 03:30 PM

hmm, dumb question, kinda.....but the compass mirror shouldn't affect the radar's performance in anyway right?
Mulder 06-22-2005 03:53 PM

Doesn't affect mine.

Wisconsin dude that laser alert scarred the crap out of me I thought my detector was going to blow up. Haven't had any other hits of laser outside of the Wiskey Jack state though. Tennesse I actually had an X Band hit from some butt scratch no where Sheriff. It was awesome I read him from about twelve miles out.
Wolfninja 06-23-2005 08:19 PM

If you have an Escort they sell hard wire kits on their web site.

http://www.escortradar.com/accessories.htm
fuzzymemory 06-23-2005 09:11 PM

crotchrocket: it does make a difference what wire you tap into... the auto dimming mirror is switched, so when the car turns off, it turns off. The map lights are powered as long as the battery gets power, so your detector won't shut off automaticly when the car is turned off. Tapping off the auto-dimming mirror is preferred if you want to cut into the wires near the roof. I just went with the power from the power socket's fuse, which also switches off when the car is off (at the least in an 04 WRX).

duhRickJames: There could be 2 problems with the suction cups not working - either the glass is dirty or the suction cups need to be fixed. Sometimes the suction cups get bent, and putting them in hot water can help fix that. You can also try getting new suction cups.
ludecrous 06-23-2005 10:09 PM

auto dimming mirror plug..... best to cut it off and connect straight to wire or use spades/connectors in the actual plastic plug ?
WRX-ray 06-24-2005 11:08 AM

can those V1 instructions be appled to the 8500 x50? Do I need the smartcable thing it came with still be attached if I hardwire it to the dimming mirror, or can I just use the phone line?

step by step instructions with pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks
