Great driving, glad there were no dropouts by the big names. Funniest part of the show was when they were interviewing Markko Martin & asked him about his transmission problems.
I would have to say it was when Galli got slap happy!
Actually I would have started to give him bad pace notes afterwards.
Seriously, its uncalled for to start a US vs. UK flame war with garbage like you just posted. Move on.
Sense of humour Bypass much? ;):D

I found the sound of the Speed episode was terrible. The female commentators sound track clips like crazy. Do not listen to it loud or you risk damaging your speakers. (Technically, it could also be a fault of DirecTVs version of the episode.)

Sorry, sarcasm over the internets is hard to detect :]

I agree, the sound was so annoying on speed. during the program I had it way up to hear eveything. Then when a commercial would come up it was instantly 3x louder than before. >_< I felt like a hick when thr nascar commercials would start blaring away.
Lets look to the results so far

Rally Atkinson(2005) Sarrazin(2005) Hirvonen(2004)

Monte Carlo DNS 14th Mechanical retirement
Sweden 19th 13th 9th
Mexico Acident retirement DNS 5th
New Zealand 7th DNS 7th

Points scored 2 0 6

Hardly an improvement for the team so far, great waste of a years experience of WRC for an up and coming driver though. ;)
Haha, back to Mikko's defense John? The problem with your logic is that Mikko had mutiple years in the WRC to learn the courses whereas Chris is doing many of the events for the first time in his career. The fact is that Chris has showed incredibly superior speed to Mikko and has only scored marginally less points in his debut WRC season compared to Mikko's 3rd (correct me if I am wrong but I remember him running a non works Focus WRC in 2002). As I keep repeating in this ongoing argument b/w you and I about Mikko and Chris, it is much easier for a rally team to rein a driver in when they are fast but reckless than it is for them to teach a slow but controlled driver how to go fast. Mikko didn't have the speed, Atkinson does. Good choice Subaru.

plus you can undertsand what Atkinson is saying. He doesnt utter "uh" every other word. I shouldnt be talking though, I have yet to master a 2nd language...or rally driving :p
johnfelstead 04-11-2005 07:46 PM

Happy to correct you Jon, you are wrong.

Mikko drove his first WRC rally in Finland 2002 in a FWD Renault Clio 1600, he competed in Italy with this car then did Rally GB in an old Impreza WRC which suffered mechanical failure on day one. He focused on Finland in 2002 where he became the Finish Rally Champion (obviously they are all slow drivers in Finland).

Mikko's first full year in WRC was in 2003, where he drove a year old Focus WRC02, he was running as a junior ford team member backing up the two main drivers in their Focus WRC03 (which was a major step forward), his best result being 6th in Cyprus (i was there).

So Mikko had one years WRC experience in a junior team when he joined Subaru at very late notice to replace Richard Burns who sadly fell ill just prior to Rally GB so couldt take his Subaru drive for 2004, hardly the massive experience you seem to want to think he had or the great preparation for the season he may have needed.

Look at all the top drivers past profiles, Mikko's results are good for a new driver in their first full season in a top team.

For example, Petter Solberg, first WRC event 1998 Sweden, 1999 junior ford WRC team, 2000 Ford and Subaru WRC teams, 2001 Subaru WRC Team (10th in drivers championship in his 3rd full season), 2002 SWRT (2nd in championship), 2003 SWRT (champion), 2004 SWRT (2nd in championship).

Mikko Hirvonen was 7th in the drivers championship 2004 in his 2nd full season, first full works drive, so did a better job than Petter in his 2nd and 3rd season.
leaknoil 04-11-2005 08:08 PM

There is probably more to Mikko getting booted then just his results I would guess. Nobody is really talking so, it's hard to tell.
leaknoil 04-11-2005 08:25 PM

(Ignore this. Double post on error)
WRXedUSA 04-11-2005 08:46 PM

I do understand what John Is saying, and I agree somewhat. I think that in Finland 2004 where SWRT gave the team orders to Mikko to letter's rip, he really didn't impress.

It was kinda a bad deal all around.

Just got back from New Zealand, and boy am I a happy camper. :) I finally got to see a WRC event in person! Very cool to finally see all the drivers and cars up close (especially during the ceremonial evening). Got to chat with the NZ WRX club (thanks for the calendar!!) at the Super Stage in Manukau and finally got to see a 22b and Spec C up close! Nice bunch of guys.

Sorry, just wanted to share the excitement. :)

Last year ... that was when there were only 8 full time factory cars (Subaru, Citroen, Peugeot, Ford), and 4 part time (Skoda & Mitsubishi), right? So 7th isn't really that impressive at all.
johnfelstead 04-12-2005 04:52 PM

All the people in front of Mikko were works full time first entry team drivers, not something you can say for Petter in his 2nd or 3rd season.

Mikko did as well as you can expect for a driver under the circumstances, it's a shame he wasnt given the chance to use that years experience to show what he was capable of.

Congrats! WRC is addictive, you just can't do one! It is truely an elevating experience to be around the drivers, to see Carlos right in front of you, or to pass a car in transit... I better stop, my pant just got a little wet.

Ok, I'm back in the States :(

It was a phenomenal rally for spectating, they really had things organized well, a FAR cry from the rallies I've attended in the US.

As for pictures, I have a ton, I'm still going through them an hope to have them up by tonight :)
