Oh my god- removed my STi wing- what have I done? part 1

zigger 05-12-2005 11:32 PM

Oh my god- removed my STi wing- what have I done?
Crap!! I really liked the look of the wingless sti. So I thaught I would take off the wing and undo 17 bolts and I was left with 17 holes... My buddy thaught we can just plug them with these black platic peices sand them down , prime them and paint them white.. WHAT a DISSASTER I have these lumps everywere!! What do I do now? I like it wingless but my trunk is screwed!!! I can't fill tem out and repaint them because I plan on putting the wing back on when I return the car to leasing comp. Any advice.. I am to emvarassed to show pictures
:(
Uncle Scotty 05-12-2005 11:34 PM

....ya better buy a new deck lid and put it on.......

...or take it to a pro.

....and oh, yeah....BAD IDEA.
Al_Smokemcrack 05-12-2005 11:36 PM

It's a lease? Man, you should have thought ahead. Modding rule number one: there's always a chance you won't be able to put it back to stock.
ktm 05-12-2005 11:38 PM

OMG......this has me crying from laughter....
zigger 05-12-2005 11:41 PM

well..
I can put the wing back on no problem. Just knock the plugs out and stick wing back on in 15 minuts. I just wasn't sure if I would like the look or if I will buy out my lease but I didn't want to make this permanent. If I decide to I will just fill them in at a shop and get it repainted no biggy.. but I want to know some option I can do now? what is a DECK LID?
Evil STI 05-12-2005 11:42 PM

I can't stop shaking my head. Thanks for the laughs!
mauahah 05-12-2005 11:44 PM

deck lid = trunk lid, go buy a new trunk lid
Homerisking 05-12-2005 11:44 PM

this is why Swapping is popular...not wife swapping ...trunk swapping . :)
SubyDuz 05-12-2005 11:46 PM

    One word "idiot"....  What were you thinking? Oh wait you weren't, never modify a leased vehicle, my god man....who talked you into this? Just put it back on and act like nothing happened.

sorry were all not perfect like you buddy

do u know my situation? I may buy it out I may not I can throw a exhaust and put it back to stock in 1 hour so who cares if it's leased?? sheesh
23b_Rex 05-12-2005 11:47 PM

you had good intentions... but seriously - you gotta swap trunk lids with someone (which you can't in your case cuz it's a lease)

If it's "no biggy" then why were you freaking out about it in the first post and in the subject line? :)

Anyways, I would recommend bolting the wing back on and swapping your entire trunk with someone that has a wingless WRX and wants an STI spoiler. People do that a lot on these forums, if you look around you won't have a problem finding someone. That option is if you want to buy out the lease. If you're still not sure you can just buy a wingless WRX trunk lid. I happen to have a black one for sale but it has hail dents in it. If you're interested we can talk it over thru private messages.
zigger 05-12-2005 11:50 PM

Thanks
Can anyone reccomend a place that I can buy a wingless trunk? I think I want to keep the oem and just swap trunks hwenever I feel like it or if I need to return it.
I'll pm u
moss 05-12-2005 11:51 PM

Who would come up with the bright idea to plug holes with plastic pieces then sand the trunk down and paint them?? I need a picture... do you mean you just painted the plugs white and put them in the trunk??? Whats the big deal with that? How is the trunk screwed? Unless you sanded the WHOLE trunk... then well...
zigger 05-12-2005 11:52 PM

yeah dude..
I painted the plugs 1st than put them in. Problem is they are raised like in that pic so u see lumps.. it looks gay.

ImportVenom 05-13-2005 12:07 AM

Some people on here can be such jerks. No wonder Nasioc has a bad rep among other car enthusiasts. As others have said, just buy a used white wrx wingless trunk, and swap trunks any time you want to switch between no wing or sti wing.
ktm 05-13-2005 12:08 AM

You probably won't be able to do a swap since you need to return the car with all its original equipment. You might be able to buy a deck lid from someone.
zigger 05-13-2005 12:13 AM

Thanks ImportVenom
and yes u are right this forum does have that Reputaion but some people here are cool and helpfull. Sorry I don't mean to be thick headed but what is the DECK lid again? and what part is it exactly and were can I get one!! lol
Vbp6us 05-13-2005 12:17 AM

I believe it's this:

zigger 05-13-2005 12:22 AM

okay??
But my holes are were these spoiler was? Is the deck led the Subaru lettering part? Or the whole trunk? Even if I get a wrx wing I need to fill the holes out right? 4 holes in total?
imprezive one 05-13-2005 12:23 AM

A deck lid is just another name for the trunk lid, meaning the thing that you're trying to take the wing off of. The trunk lid I have for sale doesn't have any holes in it because it came off of a WRX without the spoiler as an option.

Replied to your PM.
moss 05-13-2005 12:24 AM
I painted the plugs 1st than put them in. Problem is they are raised like in that pic so u see lumps.. it looks gay.
Ok now see, from how it read, I thought you put the plugs in THEN painted them. Which would be stupid.

What you did isnt a big deal! Pop the plugs out, put the wing back on and find a white wingless trunk :) Keep the STi trunk just incase ;)

keith
zigger 05-13-2005 12:28 AM

That's what I will do
How much shoukd one go for used? An dif I get another colour how much u think to repaint it white?
97ImprezaCoupe 05-13-2005 12:46 AM

man.. i believe some of the cats that have the newer STi's are dumber than the cats that have the older STi's... its a shame :) ( im not making fun of myself mind you =p
STirocket 05-13-2005 12:51 AM

I have seen pictures where someone has just removed the upper half of an STi wing, and left the lower half in place. They put a cap or something on where the upper half separates and you have a real nice looking short spoiler with a couple winglets... :)
zigger 05-13-2005 01:11 AM

sound nasty
Not for me.

Is that a trick question
conker69 05-13-2005 07:52 AM

I told you to use a chainsaw.

You have only two choices. Put in back and swap with someone or leave it off and take it to a pro to fill the holes. There was plenty of good advice in your other thread.

enewtabie 05-13-2005 08:07 AM

You can mod a leased car if you're going to keep it..You can also trade it in..or return it back stock..people need to get some info.

I don't even know why people think it's funny? You took the stock spoiler off and capped the holes, what's the big deal? You can just put it back the way it was if you want, it's not like you ruined the whole trunk.

People need to get out more

its funny cause in his original post, he was panicking and made it sound like he completely destroyed his trunk
kickitjp 05-13-2005 10:40 AM

It's funny because he tried to remove a wing, instead of doing a search and swapping trunk lids with a wingles (sti or wrx) :p
tlatoani 05-13-2005 10:49 AM

I bought a lid from the dealer. Local bodyshop matched the paint (I didn't want them to touch the rest of the car obviously). It looks perfect (other than the scratches I put it in grrrrrrr).
TestPilot 05-13-2005 11:17 AM

Who cares if it's lease. People scared of modding leases are people who can't work on their own cars and have to take it everywhere to have **** done to them.

My buddy had a new SS Camaro that was a lease. That thing ran low 11's, and never went to the dealership for any kind of service. After the lease was up it went back bone stock. He did all of the work himself.

My old 1.8T VW was modded to death to the point of warranty denial (if those VWOA bastards had got their hands on it  ) and when I traded it in it looked bone stock, the dealership was like the tires look like they've never hit pavement (they only had 500 miles on them)

My STi is turning into a possible warranty nightware already, but believe me IF (and I hope not) something major goes wrong, it'll be in my driveway getting put back stock and then towed to the dealership for the work.

So don't worry about your decklid mistake, it's nothing permanent, so who cares.

As for this forum being very abrasive to new enthusiasts it's definitely true. I stayed away for a long time just lurking, but since WRXLinks is down I joined. Some people on here think that if someone has never owned a Subaru before you're like a car novice or something.
Uncle Scotty 05-13-2005 11:37 AM

....and the above is one reason why some of the 'n00bs' get slapped for what they post.

If you break your car, it is YOUR responsibility to pay to repair it....NOT SOA and the dealership, and it is idiots like YOU that cause people that have never modded their cars SO MUCH hassle to get warranty work done.

YOU MOD IT----IT BREAKS-----YOU PAY.
zigger 05-13-2005 11:38 AM

wrx112 05-13-2005 01:35 PM

**** is funny. Im sorry but why do people jump into things so soon without properly analyzing the situations. You were gonna go cheap with plastic plugs/caps. You really can't go cheap on subaru's because you will pay for it literally. DIY done wrong learn from your mistakes.

It's the internet, people are lazy or didn't pay attention in school, or English wasn't their first language. What do you expect?
BlackfeetVI 05-13-2005 04:20 PM

For the original poster: Another option you can try is going to a dealership parts department and asking how much a new trunk lid is. See if any of the dealerships near you support Subaru clubs. Some dealerships have parts discounts for Subaru club members. If you want I can PM you a list of part numbers and things to think about (do you want two lock cylinders or just switch the one you have between the two lids?). We've done a few STI swaps through the shop here.

For the poster who was bragging "When my STI goes in for warranty work I'll be putting it back to stock", thanks for nothing. It's people like you who screw over the rest of the community in more ways than one. I'm sure there are Subaru people who look at the boards every now and then, and posts like that reflect very badly on all of us. Also, defrauding Subaru means we all have to pay for your stupidity. It's not like a tech won't figure out something is up. Someone dumb enough to post something like that probably won't get one past the tech or the District Rep. Suck it up and take responsibility for your actions. Either that or sell your car. Please.
