Race of Champions on HDNet!

I believe Speed will be airing RoC coverage at some point, but I just saw an ad last night for the RoC being aired in beautiful HD on HDNet on December 4th. I don't know what the coverage will be like, but it'll be cool to see some non-NASCAR auto racing in HD :D
| skuttledude | 11-24-2004 09:00 AM |
UGH!
I'd love to see that race in HD! (I've got a 106 inch screen, shot from a DLP Proj.) But I haven't taken the plunge into HD...I've got DirecTV
Anybody have HDnet? Worth getting? Do they show much of any other racing?

HDNet is mostly gratuitous HD programming... they had a show on last week that was just slow-mo footage of things blowing up, and a show on penguins too that had absolutely no dialogue, just lots of HD penguin footage.
So, it's not really a channel with lots of quality programming from what I've seen so far, it's mostly just pretty stuff.

Yeah, Speed will have it about a week later, on December 12th.
Typical.
I'd like to see more motorsports on competing channels- maybe it would improve Speed?
(Prolly not- they'd just show even more NASCAR- gotta git the ratings up! )

Did anyone see the limerock and miata cup races over memorial day on hdnet? I was at the races and saw the huge hdnet trailor there and then went to work the next day and from what they told me it was aired live. I work at circuit city where we have direct tv and hdnet, I personally have cable and we have inhd 1 and inhd2. I think the content of inhd is better, but bikini destinations on hdnet rules.
| TimStevens | 11-24-2004 12:36 PM |
Didn't have an HDTV back then, so I didn't see any of the races. I'll have to check out their listings to look for more auto-related programming. All I've seen so far has been fluff, including bikini destinations, which has got to be one of the lamest shows on TV
| TimStevens | 11-29-2004 08:19 AM |
My DVR just rolled over so that I could set Saturday to record... turns out there's about 4 hours of coverage of the RoC! Something tells me Speed won't have quite that much...
| Bonzo | 11-29-2004 08:44 AM |
TimStevens you suck.
| TimStevens | 11-29-2004 08:47 AM |
Come on over Bonz, we can get the restrictor plate bypass installed on my Citroen before watching the coverage.

Coverage starts now, live, for those with HD. Tune in! :D
| bastich | 12-04-2004 10:58 AM |
Damn this sucks. I am watching the live results on the roc website. How the hell did coultard and mcrae lose by 10 seconds?
| Tilapia | 12-04-2004 11:11 AM |
Watching right now myself on HDNet. Wish I had a HD Tivo or some HD PVR. Good stuff so far.
It'll repeat again tonight and on several other days in case you miss it.

HDNet is run by Mark Cuban. http://hd.net/ It may have some fluff shows, but at least he took the dive into HD early.

Tilapia: Can you give us some blow by blow on what you are seeing? First round: Looks like MS and Bourdais had the fast times....what cars were they in for round 1? Kanaan beat Loeb!? Alesi best Mears, by a hair, surprising. Mears time was faster than most of the field. Johnson had a very slow run, did he crash or spin? C'mon....info please. Help us out. :)
Wait, they now show Loeb beating Kanaan....did they asses some sort of penalty against Kanaan?

| bastich | 12-04-2004 11:26 AM |
You can tell what cars they race by looking at the results screen. Between the driver names there is a symbol for the car manufacturer.
| TimStevens | 12-04-2004 11:32 AM |
Man the commentary is absolutely terrible... these guys have no clue what's going on.
Anyway, they're giving seemingly arbitrary 10 second penalties for touching the wall, which sucks. Seems the officials are just doing all they can to get Loeb vs. Schumacher in the final. Oh well... still good racin :)
Armin Schwartz was putting on a show!

If they hit the wall it is a 10 second penalty. You hit 10 times, it's 100 second penalty. You really have to stay focused.
Right now, Schumacher and Kovalainin(sp?) in Ferrari Modenas. Schumacher behind 0.8 seconds at mid point
Kova won. But its best of 3 though I think.

Pretty sad that a forum has better coverage than speed...

This is absolutely awesome. Looks brilliant in HD. Camera controller guys get crossed up a couple times. Announcers do not know what is going on. Still better than I could have imagined.

Tilapia, thanks again for doing the posts.
So, that's it then right? Seems like it might have been better to have all drivers do runs in all three cars, and use times to determine advancements into bracket heats. This was over so quickly, seems a little strange, like the slam-dunk version of the ROC.

| Tilapia | 12-04-2004 12:20 PM |
they are giving the trophies... while standing on the ferarris!!! can i have it after you guys are done?!
| TV3WRX | 12-04-2004 12:25 PM |
Yes, Nations cup tomorrow. But today's ROC didnt seem to prove much of anything at all, bit of a lottery in that not all drivers drove all cars. Kinda disappointing.
| bastich | 12-04-2004 12:29 PM |
Yeah, I liked the older format more. Still a cool event though.
Thanks for the live coverage Tilapia, you are the man.

Or maybe have a losers bracket, so you have to lose twice to be eliminated. The 10 sec penalties are too harsh too. It is such a tight course and close race, that if you end up hitting the wall, you're more than likely losing time as it is. Make up that time and win, then kudos to you.

the nations cup is today in 17 min, live.
i think the penalty is harsh. 10 seconds plus the time it takes for you to get going again.
