STi Rear Windshield and Wiper Assembly Install (PARTS HAVE ARRIVED!)
Awesome! I just ordered the STi Rear Windshield and wiper assembly and the best part is that I was able to convince my wife the practicality of this item. In fact, she is going to pay $300 of it (total cost was $400 plus $150 S&H)! :D
So my question is, even though I haven't seen what the wiper assembly looks like, has anyone done or have install instructions for this? I have done a search and didn't find anything helpful. Mostly I found just hints that this was going to be done. Hopefully this should be a simple install. Any suggestions or watch outs would be nice! :D
FYI - I bought this from Vividracing, they are gutting and selling a bunch of parts from a wrecked STi. They assured me the rear windsheild and wiper were in good shape and in working order.
We'll see!
EDIT: I finall got it all installed!! I have pics towards the end of this post, check'em out :D :D :D

I'd be interested to see what a $550 used windshield wiper looks like.
You could have saved $1,550 if you just bought a wagon! :)

But now he can claim the sole glory of having the only GDA sedan with a rear windshield wiper in the US!
Personally though, Rain-x does a good enough job for my wrx :)

Nah, no wagon for me. They're nice, but my heart belongs to the sedan! and having a Sti Windshield and wiper will defintely make my car more unique! I can't wait, its going to be a loooong week having to wait for this to come in, and I hope that it all works :D
Don't the wagons cost more? so techincally i wouldn't be saving any money :p Rain-X is great, but in the mornings it would be great to wipe off all that dew with a flip of a switch! :D

You lucky dog. I wanted to buy that so bad. I have Morrettes and wheels coming in next week that used up my fun money.
I think the install shouldn't that hard. It will probably be time consuming to run the wires to the dash.
Congratulations on the purchase! Good Luck.

Lack of rear wiper is one of the main reasons I wouldn't get the sedan. When you are done please post up some pics so we can see it! :)

Well I had a choice between new rims and tires or buying this rare piece of equipment for the cheap price, and I opted for this choice! :D
I'll be getting this in on thursday. I'm going to have some glass shop replace the glass (and you better believe I'm going to be there when they do it, if they break this glass, it'll be the last thing they break). I am going to do the wiper install next Saturday and I will definetely post some pics! :D

I am annoyed I can't remember where I saw it, but I definitely saw a dash switch in one of the blanks next to our cruise control. I think the others were headlight adjustment and IC spray.

Rear Wiper
The rear wiper is controlled by the same rear wiper controls on the wagon... so install the wagon steering column stalk and figure out the wiring.
The HUGE issue is the rear windshield. Do you have a JDM rear window to install it? I wouldn't drill a hole in the rear windshield you have' it may damage the integrity of it or it could shatter during the process.

Yes I do. I bought the JDM rear windshield along with the JDM wiper assembly from Vividracing. They were gutting a STi and I was able to get all this. The wiring may be a little tricky, but if it is like the wagon, then I know some people here locally who could probably help out :D
Nice pic by the way, whose car is that?

Rear Wiper
I got the pic off of a Japanese website. Another thing I noticed is that the rear windshild you will put in has a rear wiper de-icer that (I believe) is activated with the rear defogger heating element that is laminated to the window. The element has an exteneded zig-zag pattern that is right where the wiper blade rests on the window.(Why don't we get this stuff!) Also the STi windows (the rear and the two rear passenger windows - not the drive's window, front passenger and front windshield) are tinted. Just match the tint and it will look great!
Additionally (I believe) the mount is allready there for the wiper motor. Check under the rear shelf behind the seats. The wiring may be there also since the sedan is wired for the rear washer punp (which it does not have) in the engine bay. You can also get the two pump washer bottle for a wagon and install that as well for the washer feature. It will be a nice install... lets see some pictures when you get the items. Good Luck!

Yes... that's it. Install a new wagon washer bottle and it will have two pumps; that plug goes to the second pump (for the rear washer) Now the easy part is done. Where that wire goes (not sure though) is probably to a relay that is most likely not in your car, but, most likely a socket for it, that is activated by the steering column stalk. If you figure the electronics out is will be easy. I would get your hands on a Subaru Shop manual for the sedan and wagon. I think you will find that for this project the wagon has many parts that you can use. Good luck!

Parts Have Arrived!
1 Attachment(s)
Well, the parts have arrived! It looks like installation is going to be a little more work than I thought :(
The STi Windshield looks great! :D The tint looks to be a little darker than my stock tint. I am getting this windshield installed tomorrow, so I will see what this looks like and see if I am going to have to retint the rest of my glass!
The motor will mount nicely from the trunk to the windshield. There are predilled wholes for screws and the motor itself. The only thing I will have to do is cut out a whole in the back covering.
The hardest part, which is not surprise, will be wiring this damn thing up. The switch that came with this thing is for a right handed car! Hah, am I surprised, nah  This means that I am going to have to create my own switch and mount it somewhere else. I could probably go buy the same switch that the wagons have, but I dare not look at the price of those! I have a EE degree, might as well and put that to use!
The motor is going to be tricky to wire. I have no clue what voltages this motor takes. Are there power connectors for this motor already in the car? If so, I didn't see them. If anyone has a wiring diagram that will help out, I am in dire need!
Since I don't have a webhost, I am going to post several pics in the next several posts, I'm a newbie, so I can do this :p

Hah, really? There's enough wire on that window to think so!
Anyhow, I am going to have to hold on installing anything until I figure out how to wire that motor. I went to a subaru dealership, and we tried to find a schematic for this. Just my luck that the JDM wiper assembly is different than the wagons! :(
So, until I figure out how to do this, I am going to hold out on installing the window. Hah, just what I need is a whole in my window in oregon!
Again if anyone knows how to wire this thing, let me know, until then I am going to have to figure out an alternative :(

Well, two of those wires are obviously for power and ground for the motor, but the other two i'm not to sure. I took apart the motor to investigate and the other two wires are hooked up to metal contacts which make contact to metal contacts on the white plastic gear. I'm going to fire this thing up tonight to see what happens

Well I lucked out. Vividracing was salvaging a STi, so instead of paying ~$600 for the rear windshield, ~$300 for the wiper motor, ~$100 for wiring, ~$300 for the switch, plus the ~$800 shipping charge , I was able to get all this for $400 :D
I paid $400 for the glass, wiper assembly and switch, plus I had to fork out an additional $150 for shipping. This is a steal IMHO.
Looking at what I have left to buy, I still have to get a water sprayer/water tank or something of that sort, and I am going to have to figure out what I am going to do with that switch. I think in all I will end up spending another $100 to wire this thing up and a lot more than that if I want the water sprayer (doubt it).
If you can get the parts from a salvaged car, do it, your pocket book will thank you
Edit:
Let the game resume! I owe Alan a billion thanks on this one. He was able to figure out how to wire the wiper motor! :D
I have begun the installation process and I should be done by Tuesday. I'll have the motor, wires and newly made switch installed by this Saturday, but I will have to wait to get my windshield installed until either Monday or Tuesday :(
I've also decided not to worry about the water spray. That's going to be another head ache in its own. Right now,I just want a functional rear wiper! :D
I will start posting pics of the install if I get requests, happy day!

The pics will roll in on Friday! :D I am having Subaru install the windshield. There is a white clip on the Windshield that was broken off , but hopefully they will be able to install around that. After the windshield, all I have to do is bolt on the motor and I am on my way to having a nice rear wiper.
Great thing is, it's supposed to be sunny on Thursday and it's supposed to rain on Friday, just in time for the wipers!
Either way, this is how I feel:

I want it on, on, on, and then when I want it off, click, it's off. Again, I will worry about the washer spray later. If I decide to go racing on muddy roads, then I will begin to worry about this :D

I have already figured out the antenna wiring. If you look at the top part of the windshield, you'll see a strand of wire seperate from the defroster. This wire is connected to another connector (not shown in the pic), so all I will have to do is reroute the stock antenna wire to the rear windshield. Ugh, that just doesn't seem like a fun task! I will have to get some more wire to do this which means more $$$, and I think my wife is wanting me to calm down since I am up to $600 on this mod and I have an uppipe and samco hoses on the way :D
Also, if I do this, does anyone have any ideas how I could cover my existing antenna. If I get rid of my stocker, I'm still going to have the black plastic housing sitting there. I'm not sure what else would or could go there without looking to ghetto.

I finally got everything installed! The best part is that everything works too !!! I am going to do a search for a webhost so I can post my install pics, until then I'll just post a few to give you all a taste. The wiper has some good range, it goes from where it's pictures to where the second piece of blue tape is. Damn I am so happy I have this done, now time for an uppipe ! :D

Ok, last pic for now. Like I said, I am waiting to find a cheap/free webhost, once I do I'll start posting the install pics. The JDM glass is sweet and has some really dark tint. It's hard to get used to, but I think I'll be able to get used to it.
Below is a pic from the inside out. I'm not sure if I am going make a cover to cover the motor arm.
I owe a big thanks to Alan Peterman. He sacrificed several 5 amp fuses for this cause :D By the way, the motor draws next to no current. With no load, it draws 0.5 amps, and with the wiper arm, maybe 0.65 amps, very nice! ;)
Edit: I also need to thank Action Autoglass for doing a very nice job on the rear windshield install

I just found a webhost, and I am getting the pictures in order now! The install instructions will be a little crude, but you all should get the idea. The install was pretty simple. I bypassed the Intermittent Module, so that simplified the install and I didn't do the washer fluid, which made this a no brainer install :D

Installation Part One
Ok, since there's a restriction on how many pics you can post at once, I'll break this up into several posts. Also, I'm not sure why the pics aren't comming out, anyone have any suggestiosn?!
Here's a closer picture of the windshield. Somebody mentioned that the upper wires are an antenna. I was thinking about re-routing my intenna to the windshield, but I decided against that since it would really be more work than it's really worth.

Ok, here we go. The first thing I had to do was to find a 12V tap. I received many great pointers on where I could go to find a 12v source in the car, but I decided to go ahead and tap into the sidemirror power. I chose this one because it will be rare that I will be using the rear wiper and the side mirrors at the same time. Second, the motor draws very little current. Like I said before, it draws only 0.5 amps with no load, and draws about 0.65 amps under full load. Lastly, I tapped my power in this spot because this is where I decided I wanted the rear wiper switch to be.
First thing I did was realize that I wanted to feed these wires back to the trunk, so I took out the center consul, the rear seats, and anything else obstructing my path to the trunk. After that, it was time to get down and dirty. The first picture shown is how I tapped into the 12v source. The yellow wire is the live wire (12v) and the black one is ground. I cut a section out of the insulation and soldered a red and black wire to this gap which will be my gateway for power.

I went to Fry's and bought some polarized connectors. These connectors are really nice, and there is no way to plug them in backwards, and they lock together nicely. Below is a picture with the connector installed. These are six pin connectors and the reason for doing this is for future mods :D

With the power connector installed, it was time to install the wires needed to hook up the motor. There are four wires on the JDM wiper motor. Yellow/Red (YR), Blue/Red (LR),Black/Red(BR), and Green/Red(GR). The GR wire is for 12v, the BR is ground, the YR and LR are for the motor switch. Subaru uses the ground for switching power. So, I tied the YR and BR wires together. These two will complete the circuit to give the motor full power. When the ground path is broken (via a switch), the LR wire kicks in and provides enough power to position the motor back to home position.
From the motor then, I needed three wires. I used 18 AWG wire from Radio Shack (oh yeah, quality wire!). I used red for power, black for ground, and green for the LR (return line).

Installation Part Two
I started feeding wires from the front, and fed them underneath the consul carpeting. I also bought some covering for the wire so the insulation on the wire doesn't wear down to the copper.

I fed the wires around the passenger side back seat following other wires heading to the rear.

I tried to make the wires unnoticeable and at least look like they belonged there to begin with.

Once I snaked the wires back to the trunk, it was time to wire up the switch. I looked at several different types of switches and decided to go with something simple. I'm sure most people won't like the switch I used and probably won't like where I put it, but this is not your car so I will put it where I want ;)
The switch I got is a simple ON-ON switch. Below shows how I hooked up everything. One thing to note is that I decided to keep direct power separate from the ground line and return line from the motor. I did this so it would be easier to pull power from the motor for any reason.

Installation Part Three
I placed the switch above the emergency break. I used one of the spare plastic caps. The install looks clean and I personally like where the switch is. It's easy to get at, and was probably one of the easiest places to have put it. I could have put the switch near where the fog lamp switch is at, but that would have required more wire and more time and effort than it was worth.

Ok, now to test this thing. What's nice about where I have tapped the 12v source is that it is hooked up to a relay. So, I only have power there when the key is in, and I still have power without having to start the car. As you can see, I have a nice 12v supply when I have power and next to no voltage when the switch is flipped.
