Here is a sequence of photos by both my wife and I that tell the tale of the "Asaph Hay Bale"

Here is Ken Block over shooting the turn where he then tangles with some hay bales.

Then after dragging one across the bridge it gets deposited here.

The "Hay Bale"

A photographer mercilessly raining blows upon the offending hay bale...

and finally our tale ends with Travis and Christian in the 199 car ...

I hit two bales in Oregon...maybe the hay bale gods were retaliating???

That was one of the worst situations of my rally career...caught on film from many angles! So lame...oh well, I guess we made it interesting for those that made the long trip out to spectate, eh? Thanks to everyone that helped me out getting the car off those damn hay bales.

Funny thing was that I knew exactly where I was on that stage and slowed down considerably to make that corner and not slide out and hit the curbs on the bridge....then the car just went straight even after some vigorous pulling on the handbrake. That corner was damn slippery.

More action bale photos from up-close are posted on the rally.subaru site.

Congrats to Matt and Ole for the win. I am looking forward to the next rematch in Maine.
Isn't that tire smoke? Look at the smoke from the rear tire, too.
Nope, it was the hay, as far as I could tell. The exhaust would have been right on the hay, and in the night stages you could the exhaust glow red, so I'm pretty sure that was it. Plus he was spinning on really wet ground - we got about two inches of rain the night before, so tire smoke was rare.
XenoWolf 06-05-2006 02:40 PM

Don't feel bad yet, Ken. Remember that JB said this years' STPR will be televised.. it always gets worse.

Congrats on your stage wins Ken.
Very impressive considering the company you were in!

The only haybale I have hit was in my shifter kart a few years ago - not so good.
Der Schnitzel 06-05-2006 03:56 PM

Beautiful pics as always Pete... I need to roll by your spot and see what you have for us at RallyVW. We may have a need for a few more high res shots in the very near future so maybe we should talk.

Ken- One thing that I should have told you at the race that I did not was that many of the rest of us in rally owe you a debt of thanks for all you guys are doing for the motorsport. I can see more attention comming and lets hope more money starts to follow.

By the way... as soon as we can get JB to set up a 250 mile stage with no service or place to get fuel you are all in serious trouble!

Hmmmmmm...spy photos. Good eyes! Those are the shoes that Travis and I have been testing and developing. They will be available at retail in January of 2007. They were designed to look more like a skate shoe than a driving shoe...but, have all the bells and whistles of a typical driving shoe (Nomex, FIA & SFI certs, etc.)...plus some DC proprietary technology (more details later...too early to talk about that now). They are very comfortable (more padding and a heel cushion) than other driving shoes because of all the standing around that a typical rally requires. We are really proud of how they are turning out.

Ken - Put me down for a pair. I asked you about the shoes @ Sno*Drift this year. :p

As a skateboarder for over 1/2 my 33 yrs on this planet, I'll gladly replace my Sparco karting shoes w/a pair of DC's. :D

Hell...I run a Trackmagic shifter kart partly because it's skateboarder affliated since it's owned by the late Fausto Vitello. :D

Very funny.

Yes, besides my yellow/navy/blue, there will be a solid black (Tanner is wearing the black in that photo) and a red/black/white. And, in Summer 07 there will be an all-white color way.

Also.....if anyone has any color requests, we are working on the color for Fall 07 right now. So, let's hear it....

I'd like to hear the story as well. I'm guessing it's the Dixie Horn I heard at night! The spectators sure loved it!

dm
bjorn240 06-06-2006 03:00 PM

Umm, story? The deal, as I remember it was that, at some point last year, probably on a loooooooong transit, Travis asked me if I'd seen the Dukes of Hazzard movie. I said I hadn't, but that I'd heard about it since Tanner did some of the stunts. A few miles pass by and Travis says, "They really really jump cars far in that movie." I respond with, "Oh, I heard that they used steam catapults or cannons for most of the long jumps - nobody was actually driving." Travis was pretty disappointed. A few more miles go by. Travis says, "It would be cool to have a Dixie horn on the rally car!" "Yeah, that'd be cool," I say, having a sip from the Camelbak.

After the event, or maybe at the next service, Travis mentioned to the guys at Vermont SportsCar that he'd like a Dixie horn for the car. And after a few funny looks (and maybe a drink or two?), Lance says that he can have a Dixie horn _after_ he wins his first event.

Fast forward to Rim - Win, email/phone the guys at the shop, order placed with JC Whitney, and BOOM! we're like Bo and Luke! The button was actually on the dash, and it was pretty hard to beep it, and stay concentrated on the notes. That's why I may have missed 2 or 3 spectator areas.

Glad people liked it though. It definitely made us laugh in the car!

Here are some that I took as seen in the thread about it in NESIC. More can be seen here: http://rally.subaru.com The crystal clear looking ones are not mine. It was my first time being at a rally and my first time ever using a fairly advanced camera. These are the best of what I got:

The pics I posted are mine. If you look closely they're not quite as "good" in quality as the others on the site. Lars has a 12 megapixel camera... mine was 4. Look at how clear this one is. It is not mine.

I had a dixie horn in my old pickup truck. I was accused of being a racist.

I'm not joking. :(
bjorn240 06-07-2006 08:19 PM

Actually, that kind of concerned me too, but by the same token, I think people can make the obvious Dukes of Hazzard connection - two devilishly handsome guys, sliding a fast car around on dirt, fighting the man! ;)
