The 22b at my local autocross

I saw a 22b at my local autocross here in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The guy who ownes it just moved from California, and it was Gunmetal. If you're from Cali, he said he used to run Laguna Seca

I doubt its the real deal.

Probably swapped in the 2.2T motor from old US legacy and then called it a 22B.
| Geek Guy | 03-13-2005 08:17 PM |
There is at least one 22b at SOA in Cherry Hill, NJ.
| Mopho | 03-13-2005 08:25 PM |
There is one in Colorado Springs too
I think they only came in blue as well

pics please. If you don't have pics, perhaps there is someone from your local AutoX club that took some. Seems there's always a few shutterbugs in every club
22B were not officially registered for US roads.
I remember the good old days on the Subaru Stage 2 fourms (anybody remember that??) of 1 guy (rsquire?) that had a blue 22B but kept it in England for the exact reasons of it being waaaaaaaay too difficult/impossible to drive it on normal roads here.
I believe they too also came in Blue only. There's a 98% chance the one you say was not real. Perhaps they took a GC8, flared the fenders and bolted in a JDM spec WRX engine?

Zpsand, I have run in the SOWELA events before. I have family in Lake Charles and Sulphur. I know that Don, from Dons Carwash runs his Blue wagon in the events. Here is the link to the local club
http://www.sowela-scca.org/
Maybe people can check out the results when posted. As for pictures, there is usually none posted on the local site.

I can guarantee that is a 22B, having seen it and taken those pics. Its a 22B through and through. :)
Those pics might be a little deceiving but it definitely has the 22B fenders.

You can buy replica fenders, or have them made.
I'm not sayin git's NOT a 22b... however, what made them unique was the color code "22B" of the paint... they ONLY came in 22B Blue.
The only way to tell is to look at the color code on the firewall.
If they did truly own a 22B, they would know this, and it would be beyond any owners imagination, if they did have one of the most rare or rare Subarus, knowing what it was, that they would repaint it to a different color.
If they did, god rest their soul.
I very much doubt that is a genuine 22B that you saw at Pikes Peak and those pics, and I also higly doubt that you saw a silver 22B.
THIS.... is a 22B: (Notice the fenders... not at ALL like in the pics posted)

Do not mess around with one of the more sacred Subarus. Not good at all. You may think you saw it, and the owners may have stretched the truth... painting it????
You be the judge.

| Impreza01 | 03-14-2005 05:32 AM |
There are only two Subaru 22b STis in America. One of them is the un-numbered 22B at the Subaru of America headquarters in Cherry Hill (it's un-numbered because it's the unlucky #13 of the 555 produced). The other one is in Colorado owned by a Subaru dealership. I suspect the one pictured above is the one owned by the dealership, but I am not sure. I sort of give it the benefit of the doubt because it looks like the 22B blue color and no one would spend $$$ to make a U.S. GM6 2.5 RS into a RHD car. I do know the Colorado dealership's 22B is modded both externally and internally.
Either way, the gunmetal-colored Impreza in question is not a 22B unless it was recently imported and repainted. I guess one way to know is to have the guy pop the hood and you can look at the vin plate to see what engine code it is. If it doesn't say ej22, it's a fake.
EDIT:
I believe these are pictures to SOA's 22B.

Correct.
The 22B is owned by Heuberger Motors in Colorado Springs. It was used to race Pikes Peak once (2000, 2001), but broke the transmission and has never been fixed. I also believe it was involved in a race accident if I remember right.
That is why you see Wendy's stickers on it.

Don't give it the benefit of doubt for THAT reason. There are lots of RHD Impreza's floating around that are the "old gen" which have been brought over to the states. They are WRX's and STI's. No reason to believe it's 22B.

The Colorado Springs 22B is the real deal. The angle of the first photo is deceiving. David Donner raced it up the Peak in 2000 in Showroom Stock. He qualified in the top three splitting Millen's EVO and Jeff Zwart's 911 if I remember correctly. Broke on the way up on raceday. The dealership carts it out every year on race weekend to show it off. For you amateur types, that Wendy's sticker is what is know as a "sponsor." :D

David and Bob Donner own one of the largest Ferrari collections in the country. They also have a nice collection of Porsches. While we might go ape :disco: over the 22B, to them it's a grocery getter. I checked my records and he also raced it to second place in 1999, 3 seconds behind Rhys Millen in a Skyline. David went back to driving his 700 HP Open Wheeler in 2001 because he missed the power. In 2002 he was the Overall Champion.
I remember drooling over it and going into shock when David called it a nice little car. I guess when you are use to twice the horsepower not much impresses you. :alien:

Umm, KC I believe the color was 555 Sonic Blue.
There was a UK 22b in Houston in 2002 that was in town for a year. It was in for repair as our junk gas didn't get along with it. Don't know what became of it after it was rebuilt, but I'd expect it would have been shipped back by now.

There were only 16 official UK spec 22b's. Only 8 of them still exist. All the rest are Jap spec.
If someone would like to drop 60K, I can have one here for you in about 3 months.
I have a rear ended 22b cut in half that I want to import but shipping is expensive. Dont know if the parts value outweighs the cost of the car plus shipping.

hey guys, sorry i've been busy, and haven't check the forum in a while. I have pics and but there on my camera phone, trying to find a way to upload them. i'll be seeing him again at the next event so i'll be sure to bring a real camera. About the Engine, the guy claims it is a EJ22, and he tryed to show me but they called my to do my run and forgot to check later. By the pics on my phone, the fenders look look pretty wide and i remember the gauge cluster is the same as pics i've seen on the internet. The baging on it looked like nothin i'd seen in America.
Also, were there any other subaru's with 2 doors?...if ya'll could post any info i could ask him to varify, i'll ask him everything and report back.
P.S, - hey Tex-Wrex, yea Don is one of my autoX buddies, he recently got his clutch changed and at this last event he got a BAD raddle in neutral, so hes gonna be for a little while until he find out what the problem is exaclty...those darn subaru mechanics (haha)

yea, after doing some reseach, i agree. It is a very nice car though, he musta went through alot of trouble to get some of the stuff in that car though, like the gauge cluster, it matchs the 22b's cluster, the badging looks JDM, and if acctually has the 2.2 like he said, that would still be a great feat. He drives pretty darn good either way.

The 22B in colorado originally belonged to a friend of a friend of mine down in London, Dr Theodore Soutzos. It is featured on 22B.COM in its spec as it left the UK. Once in the USA they changed some of the setup and removed the Motec dash. http://www.22b.com/own_theodore.htm
With the knowledge there now is on this engine and how to map it, i think its feasable to have this car re-preped and competing sucessfully at PP. If memory serves correctly they had a lot of issues trying to get the car to work at the time. It would be great to be able to get that car back up and running and have a go at PP in it, that would be quite something.

2 years ago mr heuberger rented a local oval tarmac track and he had the sti engineers out there with the 22b and they were "tuning". i know the local mechanic that works on the car, and he could not tell me much about what they were actually doing due to confidentiality forms he had to sign.

I know. :) They removed a lot of the trick stuff off that car and put a lot of it back to stock because they couldnt work with the Motec and Chargecooling system, which is a shame.
It would be fairly easy to get that car to 500BHP and going like a steam train up that hill if they wanted to spend the money bringing a couple of Brits over with a big box of parts, its never going to throw much power out with that stock top mount IC.

Considering you registered rather recently, I won't bite. The Subaru 22B STi (yeah, wasn't officially called a WRX in its name) was the pinnacle car of the GC models. It had a forged, closed deck ej22 engine that made gobs of torque. The car had many the bits of the standard WRX Type R but there were many better pieces still. For instance, the car came stock with a ceramice double-plate clutch.
It's one of the most famous cars for any Subaru enthusiasts. So basically ready yourself for people to say: "End yourself fool". ;)
