The start of the ALMS 2007 season: The 12 Hours of Sebring

No one seems to have started a thread about it so here it goes
http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?ID=2862
In P1 Audi's are out front in practice..0.7 seconds under the pole time from last year already!
The Porsche RS Spyders are ahead of the Acuras in P2, but who knows if the Acuras are sandbagging
GT1 has the Vette's ahead of the lone Aston Martin since Prodrive is not there.
GT2 has the Ferrari's ahead of the Porsches..but new team Rahal Letterman Racing is leading the Porsches so far!

I have been waiting for someone to start this thread! This will be my second year in a row attending the race. So pumped up for it. Flying down to florida for 3 days strictly for the race (Arrive in FL. 10pm Thurs. night, hang out Friday, race Saturday, 8:30am flight home to NJ Sunday morning)
The Audi R10 is an amazing machine. If you are into the ALMS scene at all do yourself the favor and try to attend one of the races. The car sounds like nothing you have ever heard. The videos you see on youtube and such don't do it justice.
As for the race, I must say I am quite disappointed the 007 and 009 Astons won't be participating this year. They were one of my favorites to watch last year at Sebring. But at the same time I am really looking forward to the battles between the P1s and P2s due to the rule changes the ALMS imposed to help the P2s to try and keep pace with the P1s. I wouldn't be surprised if a P2 could give Audi a run for their money.

I've been waiting since seeing the Acura car at NAIAS this year so see what it will do. There was an awesome special on Speed about Acura's three team development strategy with a very neat section on their engine dyno that simulates an entire lap. I'll have to record the 12 hr. as I won't get a chance to see it live.
The cool thing is that they are having Belle Isle and Mid-Ohio this year so definately a chance to go see them.

I'll be there Saturday as well, can't wait, I've missed the last two years and haven't heard the R10 yet.

There was a thread in the Southeast Regional, but I hadn't seen anything in the motorsports forum. Yeah, I am looking forward to this weekend. I am gonna be going down with a friend in his NSX. We will be doing the parade laps to celebrate the Acura debut, then we will be in the Acura tent watching everything. I'm excited.

AMG does motor break-in procedure with a Hokenheim simluation for the SL65 motor and the SLR motor. They break it in under full load and track conditions.

They definately need more shows on race development. That show was very well done, I thought. They show some of that for Nascar which is ok, but then tons of point less nascar crap for 50 more hours. They should show more actual racing and racing development.
now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Are the Prodrive Astons just missing Sebring or did they bow out of the season altogether?

Been getting a ton of phone calls from our clients down there, many if not most of the Porsche GT3's are using our video systems, I will post video and photos as they are sent to me each night from the teams (practice/qualifying).

I think I was the one who started the Sebring thread in the SE forum. I was looking to see how many guys from down there attend and was maybe hoping to meet up with some guys. Myself and another guy from NASIOC (ericrxb) will be there for the race but not for any practice or qualifying. We were trying to attend on as much of a budget as possible.

the 'in lap' is the lap in which that fast time was achieved
the 'laps' is how many they ran
so the 3 acura teams turned 50 laps between them all

Emanuele Pirro was fastest Wednesday morning for Audi Sport North America.
Audi Sport North America's Emanuele Pirro set his first fast lap of the 55th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Wednesday as practice continued for the 2007 American Le Mans Series season opener. Marco Werner posted the fastest time Wednesday afternnon at Sebring for Audi.
The times at the top of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring results sheet are starting to get closer and closer. As was the case Tuesday and in Wednesday's morning practice, Audi Sport North America's R10 TDI led the way. But the German marque, unbeaten at Sebring since 2000, doesn't have to look very far to find its closest rivals.
Marco Werner posted the afternoon session's best time at 1:46.270 in the diesel-powered prototype he will share with Frank Biela and Marco Werner. The German, looking for his third Sebring win, was 0.557 seconds ahead of Penske Racing's first Porsche RS Spyder from the LMP2 class. Timo Bernhard turned a lap of 1:46.827, the best P2 time of the weekend and nearly a full second under the track record set last year.
Bernhard was 0.024 seconds ahead of the sister car driven by Emmanuel Collard. Porsche held the top three spots with Andy Wallace in a Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyder a 1:47.421. All three cars were under the existing class qualifying record.
Corvette Racing's first time on the track Wednesday resulted in a 1-2 position in GT1. Olivier Beretta's time of 1:57.361 led the pack in the Corvette C6.R he will share with Oliver Gavin and Max Papis. Johnny O'Connell in the sister Corvette was second quickest at 1:57.421.

Ferraris were first and second in GT2. Tomas Enge led all drivers with a 2:02.694 lap in Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing's F430 GT. The Czech driver, teaming with Tim Bergmeister and Memo Gidley, was 0.25 seconds ahead of the lead Ferrari from Risi Competizione. Both cars were under the class qualifying record.
Tafel Racing's Porsche 911 GT3 RSR was third fastest and quickest of all the GT2 Porsche entries. Dominik Farnbacher's time of 2:03.931 was the team's best.

Dindo Capello set Thursday morning's fastest time at Sebring.
Rinaldo Capello became the latest driver from Audi Sport North America to top the timing charts at Sebring International Raceway. The Italian, a three-time winner of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, posted a lap of 1:45.026 in Thursday morning's practice session. Capello set his time late in the session in the Audi R10 TDI he is sharing with Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen.
The trio won last year's race by four laps in the maiden race for the diesel-powered prototype. Audi has been on top in each session so far this week and is showing no signs of letting up. Teammate Marco Werner, in the second R10 TDI, was second quickest at 1:45.038 as Audi remained the only cars this week to break the 1:46 barrier. Both cars were comfortably under McNish's qualifying record of 1:45.828 set last year.
"We were fast because we wanted to push the car so we could find the limit," Capello said. "The car is running well, so that's why we're so fast."
Third overall and fastest in LMP2 was Timo Bernhard in the first of Penske Racing's Porsche RS Spyders at 1:46.630, more than a second under the class qualifying record. The German was 0.035 seconds ahead of fellow Porsche factory driver and Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe. The top six cars in the class were under the qualifying mark. Dyson Racing's Porsche was third, followed by the first of the Acura-powered entries, Andretti Green Racing's prototype.
Jan Magnussen put Corvette Racing's No. 3 Corvette C6.R at the top of the class with a 1:57.516. That put him 0.115 seconds ahead of the sister car shared by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Max Papis. Team Modena's Aston Martin DBR9 was next at 1:59.048.

Risi's Jaime Melo was quickest in GT2 Thursday morning.
In GT2, Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo turned the fastest lap on his last pass around the 3.7-mile, 17-turn circuit in a Ferrari F430 GT. His 2:02.017 was nearly 1.5 seconds under David Brabham's class record from last year. Next was Tomas Enge in Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing's Ferrari at a 2:02.182. Jrg Bergmeister was the best of the Porsche pilots with a 2:02.882 for Flying Lizard Motorsports. The five fastest cars were better than last year's qualifying record.
Qualifying is set for 3:20 p.m. ET this afternoon.

Audi's Marco Werner dominated qualifying for the Sebring 12 Hours, taking pole position by nearly a second from teammate Rinaldo Capello.
Reigning champion Capello was within 0.1 seconds of the lap record on his first lap, but Werner's opening effort was another nine-tenths quicker, guaranteeing the German returnee pole position. Although Capello tried to respond, he could only shave a tenth from his time and had to settle for second.
"That's a very good comeback for me," said Werner. "A big thank you to Audi. I used the peak (grip) from the Michelins and everything was okay. I was worried because we saw some GT cars cut the hairpin and bring dirt on, so I think the track conditions improved after a few laps."
Capello felt he might have gone faster had he not lost a flying lap when the Intersport Creation crashed at Turn 17 and caused an early red flag.
"It was okay, the car was good, I just got the red flag on the second flying lap," he said. "It's fine. Marco did a super lap and it would've been difficult to beat him. Congratulations to him.
"For sure we have a good car for the race and I'm looking forward to Saturday."
While there was little doubt that Audi would occupy the front row, the contest for LMP2 pole and third overall was significantly more competitive.
Penske Porsche's Sascha Maassen, Highcroft Acura's David Brabham and Dyson Porsche's Andy Wallace all took turns on provisional pole in the first half of the session, before Timo Bernhard moved six-tenths clear in the second Penske car, and then shaved another 0.4 seconds from his mark on his second flying lap.
"It's the first pole for the new '07 model and I'm very happy for the team," said Bernhard. "The competition is really high and I'm looking forward to the race - it will be a tough one."
Wallace and Brabham completed the top five, ahead of Bryan Herta's Andretti-Green Courage-Acura.
Maassen was deeply unhappy after slipping to eighth overall. His initial lap was disqualified because he had been running without headlights on, but the Belgian claimed he was not notified of the cancelled time and consequently abandoned other laps after making small errors.
"I backed off two or three times and didn't get another clear lap, but I backed off because in my mind I already had a 1:46.3 in my pocket, so it was disappointing to find they didn't count it," Maassen said.
The factory Corvettes outpaced the lone Modena Aston Martin in the extremely slim GT1 field, with Jan Magnussen beating teammate Oliver Gavin by 0.4 seconds.
Ferrari 430s continued to dominate GT2, with Jaime Melo putting the Risi car on class pole by 0.262 seconds from Tomas Enge's Petersen/White Lightning entry. Flying Lizard's Jorg Bergmeister was the fastest Porsche runner in third.

Big ass thunderstorm before night practice..a crew member got thrown into the air!!!

Originally scheduled for 7:45 pm EDT, a massive thunderstorm ripped through the area around 6:00 pm leave
the track wet with standing water. The start of the session has been delayed until at least 8:10 pm.
During the storm, half of the side canopy from the transporter of the #37-P1 Creation/CA06H/Judd was lifted
off the ground and folded like a piece of paper. A crew member was trying to hold the canopy down, and
according to witnesses in the Corvette truck, was lifted over the entire length of the enclosed area and
deposited behind the paddock, over one of the concrete walls. The crew member was taken to the infield care
center, but did not seem to be seriously injured.

WERNER, AUDI RUNNING STRONG AT SEBRING
Marco Werner was the quickest driver in Friday morning's session for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring as Audi kept up a streak that has seen it at the top of every timing report this week for the American Le Mans Series season opener. The German, twice a winner at Sebring for Audi, turned in a lap of 1:48.138 in his Audi R10 TDI.
Pirro, teaming with Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela set the time on his first flying lap of the session. He was more than a second ahead of the sister car of Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen, the next quickest car in class. It was the same car badly damaged in a crash during Thursday's night session with Dindo Capello at the wheel. Crews rebuilt the car and had it ready at the start of Friday morning.
"I personally was ok," Capello said. "The car today seems to be checking out ok. The car is running well but not running as well as before the incident but we are using this session to fine tune the car to get it back to where it was. I have to commend the Audi crew and team for working all night to get the car back together."
Second overall and first in LMP2 was Romain Dumas in the first of Penske Racing's Porsche RS Spyders. The Frenchman's time of 1:48.687 was 0.369 seconds behind the lead Audi and comfortably ahead of the Lowe's Fernandez Racing Lola-Acura.
Mika Salo kept Risi Competizione and Ferrari at the top of the GT2 class with a lap of 2:05.234 in a Ferrari F430 GT. Flying Lizard Motorsports' two Porsches were next in class with the No. 45 entry of Jrg Bergmeister, Johannes van Overbeek and Marc Lieb the fastest of the team cars.
None of the GT1 class cars posted times. The next on-track session for the American Le Mans Series is at 7:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.

It's been a good race today, but these pit officials are getting on my nerves. Every time they show a pit stop, they're giving out penalties for any reason under the sun. Somebody didn't have on gloves... somebody that was wiping off a windshield didn't have his visor down... etc. I understand there are safety issues, but it reaches a point where it's just nit-picking.
Oh well, GT2 is getting exciting now because of that last penalty.

While it wasn't exactly "squeaky clean" I wouldn't go so far as to call it dirty. He dove to the inside on the dual apex, got a better run onto the straight, and pushed wide. They bumped, but it didn't look like it was on purpose.
What's that old NASCAR adage... "Rubbin's racin'!"

I normally don't watch endurance racing (snooze fests), but I happened to be watching the end of Sebring since it was right before the Australian GP. Damn! What a finish!
The Porsche did get driven into a wall during the last lap, which was pretty ugly driving. They never did show a replay of that incident though, just the final set of corners.

They showed many replays of the final few corners where all the action took place. The Porsche driver DID NOT get driven into the wall. He was pushed wide which you could clearly see from the helicopter overhead. On the last corner he was pinched, which meant the preferred line coming onto the start/finish straight was taken away from him. They then touched and both cars ran wide, touched again and Porsche still had room and turned right back into the Ferrari.
Sorry man, this is real racing and I would have done the exact same thing. Point will be proven with their protest goes unheard.

And everyone on this board would have complained the same way and asked for a protest if they were in his position.
While I wouldn't call it clean racing, I wouldn't call it a classy move by any means.
However Risi might have just completely burned a bridge with Flying Lizard and that could come back to play a part in future races.
Like I said previously, they never showed the replay where the Porsche (sorry, I'm not up on the names) got driven into the wall. It happened about half a lap earlier.

I think the big issue Bergmeister had was before they were side by side coming out of the corner there was contact. After Bergmeister had passed Melo in the beginning of the corner, Melo came back inside and bumped Bergmeister from behind. That caused him to get off the gas, and go wide out of the corner allwoing Melo to go inside and get a run up the straight to the finish. That is the contact that affected the end result much more than hte side by side bumping.
And everyone on this board would have complained the same way and asked for a protest if they were in his position.
Ahhh...no.
I've done alot of racing since age 8 and in various types of cars/series. When someone pulls off a nice move even if a hard move you two options. 1. Complain about it like a little girl or 2. Be upset about it, analyze how it happened and learn from it. This isn't figure skating...this was for a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Bergmeister was complaining about being put into the wall on the back straight. After watching my DVR replay which showed that back stretch run you can see where he was pushed up against the wall but never was he close to contacting the wall as he stated.

I think this is exactly why anyone would be pretty unhappy and protest the contact. I'm sure you'd be the type of guy to go to your sponsors and say, sorry for not trying everything you could to get the win even though earlier in the race that kind of driving did get a penalty.

So I was chatting with my buddy Davy and asked him his take on the win.
Its racing wheel to wheel, head down to the line. If it was dirty, one would have punted the other off the track. There was nothing done intentionally there, its just good racing.

Ohh how about that GT2 finish! Risi for the win! Have a few Subbie buddies who are saying the Melo (Ferrari) drove dirty. Just looked like some clean close racing to me. Your take?
Name dropping like Frank Lin the infamous "Ghettoracer" Please somebody important justify my opinion.
I was reading what Jorg Bergmeister had to say and he didn't think it was clean racing.
In the last three years he's only done this
2006 - 1st place ALMS GT2 Class Driver's Championship (Porsche 911 GT3-RSR)
2006 - 1st place Grand-Am Daytona Prototype Driver's Championship
2005 - 1st place ALMS GT2 Class (Porsche 911 GT3-RSR), 4th Place Daytona Prototype Grand-Am
2004 - 1st place GT Class 24 Hours of Le Mans

Just saw his interview again he was complaining about contact that started in teh back straight but continued through the corner onto the front straight.
Calling it clean racing is a bit off. I wouldn't call it dirty either. It fit nicely into that area that is grey.

Making contact going down the straight was uncalled for, the contact in the corner was just hard, side by side racing.

I never said anything about Bergmeister having mad skillz, just saying he's a whiney little bish. As for the name dropping, I just happened to ask my pal Davy who I've raced with what he thought since we were exchanging emails. He's also done a bit of endurance racing you know.

let's just leave it like this. it's over. Jorgmeister got second. but i wouldn't be surprised to see the Ferrari in the next race wadded into the wall or at a minimum enjoy a nice off road excursion. not clean but not dirty. grey area does say it best. but i can tell you if it was me i was definitely be giving him a little extra push at turn in. :)

St. Pete is coming up next... a tight concrete-lined street course. Not much area for off-roading there. I have a feeling you're right though, and we might see a slightly dinged up Ferrari next race ;)

Anybody watching?
It's been pretty crazy from the start. They found the little bit of offroad in the first turn of the first lap.
