Steve,
Speaking of ESP...Sure hope those pesky AWD cars get moved quick:rolleyes: It's a shame the way those poor pony cars get spanked:rolleyes:

I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but I'm beginning to believe there are a number of STi/EVO drivers purposely not running at National events, just so the cars don't get bumped to BSP before Nationals. Can't say I necessarily blame someone for wanting the best possible shot at a National title, but if the cars really are too fast for ESP (and I tend to think they are), it would be pretty bush-league if National Tour results are spotty all Summer, then the top several places in ESP at Nationals end up being STi's/EVO's.
Just my $.02
-Steve
p.s. On the other hand, if the STi ends up in ESP next year, you can bet I'll be driving one.

I got back about an hour ago after some terrible traffic in Indiana. Took about 75 minutes to go maybe 5-6 miles.
Rained all morning on Saturday and cleared up by the time we ran in the afternoon. I had the wrong tires and bascally slid around quite a bit.
The course was...interesting. The first half was basically flat out for a looong time. At the end I was around 6200 rpm in 3rd gear which is approaching 70mph. On one run Danny Popp was on the 2nd rev limiter in his Z06, which I believe is 80+ mph. Then there was a tight 180 turnaround and the rest was speed maintenance stuff. I wasn't too disappointed with my runs but I know I left a bit of time out there, especially on the left course, where I had shifting problems every run at some point.
I'm also having problems getting the car to run enough boost in 2nd/3rd gear. The most I coiuld manage the whole weekend was 13.5psi and it's tuned to run 17... The turbo has issues sustaining that to redline but I know I've been close to hitting that in the past. Guess I'll check for leaks this weekend.
I couldn't believe how fast Mike and Tom were on that left side. I'm not sure Mike really had any good runs on the right. I imagine the long 2nd gear in the WRX was finally good for something on that long straight section. I had some of our local guys ask me why Tom's car sounds like a Honda. :)
My car broke on the way to the ProSolo, the alternator tensioner lock bolt snapped off in the alternator right across the IN border. I managed to get that fixed but then my tiny racing battery died about 40 miles west of Toledo. I sat on the side of I-80 for over 4 hours waiting for someone to tow my car. Got towed to a shop, got a new battery, and all was fine. I left my house at 8am CDT and got into the hotel at like 12:15 EDT, and Toledo is like a 5 hour drive...
As far as EVOs in ESP, Eric Stemler has a fairly well prepped EVO for ESP but he didn't seem to do well this weekend. He was fairly successfull driving an ESP Eclipse a few years ago.

Just got back myself
Mikey was stupid fast on the left. With the way the course was setup, we were both struggling really bad on the right side as I think both of us were trying to drive the way back like the left side. He did better then me on the left, but I got him big on the right. He redlit the win on the right his second to last run. I don't feel bad as I know I had another 0.5 per side easily if I nailed the turnaround. I also only took the way back correctly one time the whole weekend. That was on the 31.1 on the left side, EVERY OTHER TIME, I got late coming back. It was pretty damn frustrating. I would say mike was about 5mph faster then me through the lights on the left because of his staying on line and ahead in that back section.
We both went out in the 2nd round of the challenge. Mike by coning out against jerry onks and me by getting 2 friggin 0.800 lights  against garfield. I lost by 0.200 or something like that :furious: I still took the honda challenge and highest subaru as I was a higher qualifier then mikey.
Last but not least, mike switched to Kiko's shaved MXs for Sundays runs. He was much faster on them sunday then saturday, but we don't know how much of that was better driving (mike thinks thats what it was) or the tires. He said it wasn't a good comparison because he drove THAT much better sunday vs. saturday, as well as the course being much better. Even though he had my by almost 0.3 on the left, I had that and more without a screwed up turnaround. So basically its back to the same old "Its a tossup on the tire and depends on the driving style and weather"
Last but not least, as far as eric stemler in ESP, compare his times to mine and mikeys. I would say thats not really a "fair representation" of the performance of an EVO in ESP.

This was my first solo. I admit I was hoping to be a little bit closer to the pack if I came in last, but I still had a ton of fun. My biggest concern was learning how to launch. Thanks to Tom, I think I did pretty well in that (usually .5-.6 RT with only one red). Do the reaction times get posted? Anyways, it was really nice to meet everyone. In particular I would like to thank Tom, Mike, Chang (not on these forums) and Nate (solo-x) for helping me make up some of the time I was losing out there. The event definetly made me want to 1) attend an evolution school (I missed this year because of my accident :() and 2) fix my paltry -.6 camber and +3.3 caster... the car can act like more like an ocean liner than a sports car in setting up for these turns. Given everything, I was happy with the event. My only comlaint was the left hand course exiting quickly (60mph+ for some cars) directly into grid. I hope this isn't typical, especially with the foot traffic behind the finish/around the grid. Driving the courses was amazing... I hadn't really seen the sideways gates that made up the second half of both of the courses, they were very challenging.
Most important was that I had a ton of fun. I thought people were friendly/helpful at regional events... this blew them away. BIG thanks to Tom, Mike, Nate (solo-x), and Chang (not on these forums) for making the event enjoyable and helping me pick up some of the many seconds I left out there.
See you guys next week!

Once the rain stopped on Saturday, and once I got enough sleep that I could concentrate on driving, it was a pretty fun event. Huge thanks to Corey for letting me beat on his car!! :D
I wasn't really enthused with the course design. Too many extraneous cones, IMO. It's been years since I've been so visually confused by a course that I DNFed like I did on my second right side run. After the turnaround, it was better, but the speeds sucked you in, and I know I wasn't the only one who got greedy and ended up late in the slaloms and offsets, or worse, crushing cones in a desperate attempt to stay on course (while praying for a timer issue.... sorry, Corey! :o ).
I was very surprised by Jason Tipple's runs. I expected him to be right there with Corey, but I guess Billy's car didn't suit him very well. Once I found out that Colin and Jason were driving Mike O'neill's old Civic, it made sense why that crusty ol' thing was so fast; I know that car is set up very, very well, despite what it looks like. :)
As for Stemler in ESP, from what I understand, there were ecu problems with the car. He also hit a lot of cones, if you look at the results. So did Jorgensen. Amazingly enough, Griffith hit very few (of course not, he wasn't in my car :p ).
And speaking of "classing conspiracies..." To tell the truth, I get tired of the "conspiracy theories" I see on here all the time regarding the STi/Evo8 possibly being moved from ESP. If you haven't driven a pony car (Mustang or F-body), then, AFAIC, you have about as much to say about the subject as those who haven't driven an STi or Evo8. You have no means for comparison, except your own preconceived notions of how Mustangs and F-bodies handle, just like Jeff Whine-chell has only his deluded ideas on how the STi and Evo8 handle. The offhand remarks about the classing that I see after every event make me think less of the Subaru community, considering it's seemingly based on some idea of entitlement. In many eyes, the comments on here are just as bad as the constant complaining and sniping on SCCAforums... only because this is a "Subaru board," some people may think their remarks are only going to be seen by sympathetic Subaru drivers. :( Don't hurt your position by coming across as a whiner with no tech to back up your argument. Do you think the SEB or the SPAC take anything Jeff says seriously? Please don't be like that.
I don't want to turn this thread into an Evo8/STi-in-ESP argument, but after three weeks in a row of seeing "offhanded" remarks about classification following a national event, I just couldn't help but make a comment. It's also interesting to note that -- again -- the "ladies" are ignored when making the comment... Kim Fine won L2 in the stock STi, running on the ESP index, and won by 0.55 over the current ESPL national champion, Jennifer Merideth, who finished 3rd in L2. Kim and Jen are relatively equal drivers otherwise, so I think those results say at least a little something. <shrug>
Anyway, that's all I have to say on that subject. Back to work now...
Karen
ps., tom, i didn't get your shirt, 'cause they only had smalls, mediums and a handful of larges, and i wasn't sure if you wanted a large or an xl. :( you can get it at oscoda, though.

I didn't really like the courses either. The way back to the finish was pretty odd and not equal between sides by any stretch. Since this was my first pro, I dunno if that's normal to have that much difference between sides.
I was happy with my rain performance (32.2=dirtstockers are nice!!!) but I picked our shortest wheel/tires, which are also our skinniest. I was only able to match my best rain run in the dry...... Dropping from 1st to 6th on saturday and picking up a spot on sunday for 5th in DSP. It didn't help that I RL'ed and coned the weekend away on the right side. I got the left side down by sunday but always got sucked in on the right, making me way late for the final gates before the finish.
What's the rule on SOA contingency? Highest Subaru finisher per event or class? Or does it only apply to the finale'?
See some of y'all next week! We'll have the bigwheels on this time!

Thanks anyways :) Do they give out those pimpy red "youre teh winna" hats for the challenge winners this year?
As far as the whole STi/Evo vs. whatever in ESP, I think its generally understood that the STi/Evo will destroy anything in ESP if a real driver shows up. Look at larry fine on their friggin victoracers w/o a full alignment and a front bar thats too small ;) Larry was 0.1 off of Sammy.
The SEB needs to decide whether they want to keep all the pony cars etc in ESP (and then they need to move the STi/Evo out) or make it a "new" class with "new" contenders, and keep the STi/Evo there.

How in the world did the Civics get so fast in STS? D/ESP times on Azenis?
I couldn't figure out the story with the Tipple/Mossgrove/Brooks effort goin on. I thought Tipple's car broke but Mossgrove has one too, yet they ran Brooks' car? Tipple towed the trailer in, but Brooks towed it out? I'm so confused....especially since they have a bunch of stuff in the classifieds on SCCAForums........

..and yes, crusty is a good description for Colin's car - it has to be one of the scariest-looking things I've every seen!

Cool! :)
I had a really good time at the Pro. It was our first Pro, and in fact only our 2nd non-local event. Phil and I went to the Toledo CenDiv event 2 years ago, but other than that, we've basically only run regional events (and until this year, basically only OUR region at that).
So it was certainly an eye-opener. We knew we were going to have our work cut out for us, but whew! :)
So since others here can give a recap of how STX/STS/BSP/DSP/SM/etc went, I think I'll talk about a class you guys never notice. L2. (So feel free to skip to the next post now. :p  )
First thing I've learned? I should start doing rain dances. :D It POURED Saturday morning for L2 (heat 1). While that was MISERABLE weather, it was great for me as far as racing! :) After Saturday morning, I was in 3rd place (a trophy place!!), behind Patty Tunnell and Kim Fine. But by Saturday afternoon, the pavement had dried, Jennifer Merideth's Hoosiers actually got some traction and she jumped up into 3rd. And Kim took the lead from Patty by about 0.15 seconds.
Going into Sunday morning, I was about 1.5 seconds out from Kim. And about .9 seconds out from Jennifer. I knew I could easily drop half a second or more by turning in a decent reaction time (my best right-hand side time on Saturday was on a 1.2 reaction time. Ouch!!!!)
So I buckled down Sunday morning. 3 of my 4 runs on Sunday morning had reaction times in the .5s. Yay!! :) I was also getting significantly better performance off the line, thanks to launching technique suggestions from Larry Fine and Kiko. (Thanks guys!!) Unfortunately, I apparently didn't improve my on-course performance as much as I'd thought, as I only dropped .8 seconds overall. I think the cold pavement of Sunday morning hurt all of us, as Kim, Patty, and Jennifer weren't able to match their Saturday afternoon raw times either. The only drop in time that they gained was by managing to get in clean runs. While the cold pavement affected me least, since I'm on street tires, I think the Kumho Ecsta MXs still preferred the slightly warmer conditions of Saturday afternoon. However, my primary problem was that I still struggled with trying to take the return trip much too hot, particularly on the left-hand side. :(
So alas, my .8 seconds weren't nearly enough, as Kim, Patty, and Jennifer each dropped about 1 second, and Mindi Cross in a Lotus Elan (another rookie) dropped over 2 seconds to catapult up 2 spots to take over 4th place.
So. Now I think I may have the bug. Which brings me to a question: what do you have to do to qualify for the ProSolo Championships in Topeka? I'm pretty sure you have to compete in at least 3 ProSolo Series events, right? But is there a minimum number of points or anything?

Yep, yep, yep. Did that on at least 3 of my left-side runs (crushing the cone so that I could stay on course). Unfortunately, Patty and Kim just never cooperated by taking out a wall of cones in front of me (so that the course workers didn't have time to fix it) and I could stop and get a re-run.

Yes they did get the hats and doused eachother pretty well with the champagne after things were done.
It was funny when Strano ran over the right side staging beam box, I was sitting with the other Mil/Chi guys and Cashmore just goes, "That's it, time to leave". Colin, Jason, and I went and got something to eat and got back in time for the awards.
Colin has made a lot of changes to that car over the last year or so, it wasn't nearly as fast last year as it is this year. Could just be more seat time in the car as well. He coned away a win in the Challenge, he could have used the Honda Street Challenge money. Jason had his "rookie of the event" letter on the dash for the ride home. :)
I didn't mind the course all that much but there were some interesting cone placements that's for sure. At the end they had pointers mixed with upright cones and at some point in the first half on each course they had kind of a half moon shape set of cones that had a radius just the opposite of the direction you needed to go.

If I had known. :) I feel your pain however as earlier in the day I ended up working almost two entire shifts due to a lack of workers for Shift C.
I wasn't planning on doing Oscoda but I think now I will. If I do OK there I may not do the Peru Pro because Peru in August is going to be hot hot hot and that surface there will just destroy tires when it's 85-90 degrees. Oscoda is a nice place as well.

Yeah, I don't know if that's typical for a Pro or not, but it seemed that they had a chronic shortage of workers all weekend. Bryan Hull (NWOR worker chief) worked 3 shifts in a row on Saturday, from the time he was released from impound until the end of the day. Yikes!!!
I worked Shift B on Sunday, then the whole Challenge. Working 3.5 hours non-stop was absolutely brutal!! And unfortunately, because of schedules, Phil and I had basically nothing at all to eat until after the Challenge was over. We were there early to work the gate, so no breakfast. Then I ran in Heat 1. Very soon after being released from impound, they called for a region worker to work shift B, so off I went. Then Phil ran in Heat 6. By the time he was released from impound, we didn't want to leave, because we might miss the drawing for the Bonus Challenge. Then we had to head out on course to work the Challenge. So I think we had each eaten 1 chocolate chip cookie and a handful of tortilla chips. And that was it, until after the course was picked up, the car was packed up, and we were on our way back home (so 5-5:15 or so). :(
I'm surprised that this is the way Nationals runs Pros. I mean, sure, our assignment was about 30-40 minutes longer than normal because of Sammy. (I'll have to make sure to punch him in the arm next time I see him!) But it was still SUPER long. 3.5+ hours. So that'd be about 3 hours for a normal event?? That's still way too long!! Does anyone know if Nationals has ever tried having the Super Challenge entrants work during the Bonus and Ladies Challenge and vice versa?? (That way, no one would have to work more than about 1.5 hours, about the length of a normal work assignment. And you'd actually have more course workers at a time than we did yesterday by using region workers!) If so, does anyone know why they don't do that anymore? If not, does anyone know why not? :)

Yeah I think in Atlanta they paid people to work the challenge. Many of the people that run in the super challenge do other duties at the Pros since they are generally veteran people. It took 3 hours to complete the challenge rounds? I'm guessing if things ran well it would easily take less than half that long.
I've been to two pros and both were plagued with course worker shortages. On Saturday afternoon I had to cover both turnarounds on the end as I was the only one out there. I was fortunate that both sides never got hit at the same time.

I too had a great time even if I was extremely frustrated about Saturday mornings runs, sitting 7.5 seconds back and wondering why I was there. I ended up getting my head most of the way out of my butt on Sunday morning and ended up less than 3 seconds back from Tom and less than 1.5 out of the trophies. I'm hoping that once we get some more seat time in the WRX that I'll be able to be even closer. 4 events just isn't enough time to get the old mindset of "car must be pointed straight before you get on the gas" I got from driving a DS Celica the last 4 years out of my head.
I was really amazed at Mike's time on the left side course. I came off with a 32.630 and thought that there was maybe a second left out there for me if I did it perfect and then find out Mike ran a 30.8 on that side.
I too appreciate the help everyone offered, I know the launch advice that I was given helped with not bogging my launches dramatically. And once a half dozen different people explained about launching when the third yellow starts to light (instead of when it is fully lit) my reaction times finally dropped below .8.
I was fairly intimidated by the Pro format but the people there made things a lot of fun...well except for sitting on the course waiting for them to duct tape the timer back together.
I definitely want to try more Pro's now that I know what it is like and hope to do this again yet this year. See a lot of you next weekend back there for the Tour event.
Phil, highest placing non-trailer-queen in STX...

I liked the flow of the course, but some of the choices for lay-down cones were quite puzzling... Everywhere you looked, there were big walls of cones laying down. And at the turnaround, they had pointer cones on both sides of the gate!
Overall though, I'm quite surprised to hear so many course complaints... it was tons better than last week in DC.

I doubt anyone is purposely avoiding National events because the Evo and STI are in ESP for the remainder of 2004. The time for that to change was over a month ago if I'm not mistaken (June Fastrack which was written up in April or May).

The announcement you're referring to was in the June Fastrack - it is a PROPOSAL to move the EVO and STi to BSP for 2005. This proposal merely gives the SPAC/SEB some additional time to evaluate EVO/STi performance before making a final decision.
Between now and 01/01/2005, the SEB can choose to move either/both cars IMMEDIATELY, if competitive results indicate the cars are overdogs. IMHO the ponycar crowd has a valid concern that a number of top drivers may not run ANY National events in ESP, then show up in Topeka driving a well-prepped EVO/STi. (Exhibit #1 -----> Corey ;) ) Note - I don't blame Corey for not wanting to run an RS against the horde of Civics on Solo2 courses - I'd probably do the same thing in his position.
FWIW - I think Tom or Mike in a well-prepped STi (or EVO) would destroy Sammy and the other top ESP ponycars. It's just that no one of their caliber has showed up in ESP at a National event yet.

Storm: nice to meet you too... sorry I left you out of the list, but you are definetly part of what I meant about really friendly/helpful people in attendence. Regarding working, I didn't mind running so much, and I only worked the two shifts I was supposed to... I feel sorry for all those on the course for multiple heats. The other thing that I forgot to mention, however, was an unsympathetic starter when I was working. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind running to keep the event going, but there were definetly several points which I felt *endangered* because of the succession of starts. I hope that this was anomilous, because I was really tempted to wait to pick up cones until the start was held, just out of safety concern. I did not feel the high level of confidence/safety working the event that I have had at local SCCA events.
Thanks for the driving compliment... hopefully with another year or two I will be knocking on the door like you :D.

Tom,
Wouldn't you say a WRX with big fat tires maxed to ESP rules has a chance? Let alone an STI? There is no doubt that an ESP prepped version of your car or Mikeys could have won this Prosolo. ESP was only 1.8 ahead of STX.... What do you guys think?

It would be close. I was gonna give it a shot this year but ran out of $$.
I think a DSM or WRX has a shot.

KC,
I was thinking that would be some nice middle ground of developement of the car, possibly on the way to SM. (just an idea). Nobody has of yet, tried ESP seriously in our car. I agree with you that it would be difficult and you would have to run at 100+ percent, but isnt that the idea?

I'll never get my STi 100% prepped, but within the month or so, I hope to have the suspension sorted (bars, bushings, teins, camber plates, etc.) and wheels/tires (probably 255 Kumho at first, maybe Hoosiers for nats.) I might get a little more power under it too, depending on the cashflow. I'm going to try and keep it STU legal, so I can't get too crazy with the SP mods.
I doubt I'll be able to make any NT or Pros before Topeka, so I'll have zip for experience running it on concrete. I'll probably offer a co-drive to Sean, my teammate from Oregon, but I've also talked with a couple top Northwest peeps (kumho tire contracted,) which could help with my tire funds :) Might invite a couple ladies to drive it in ESPL too.
We'll see. Figured I might as well get it setup and have some fun.

I didn't think the course in Toledo afforded a huge advantage for race tires. I ran the course Saturday morning on my street tires (a mistake since it was completely dry by the time I ran) and the first half was just so open I could take it nearly as fast on those tires as my Hoosiers. The turnaround was just slow no matter what tires you were on, the end offset gate section though was where the race tires helped especially if you were late on something like I was most of my runs...
Speaking of SM, my winter project is to swap over the whole drivetrain and suspension from my WRX (including fancy new LSDs I'm getting this week :)) into a 95 Impreza L coupe. Right now with the automatic trans and no weight removal that car weighs 2700 lbs. I think I could build the car to minimum weight specs for a FI AWD car which is 2600 lbs. The car is MUCH lighter, narrower, shorter length, etc. The WRX will be relegated to daily driver duties. If you thought Colin's car looked like a piece of crap, the L is teal with a beige interior... :)

Are you sure about that? The June 2004 Fastrack states:
"SOLO II STREET PREPARED CATEGORY
The 12 month period provided by Section
3.2 for expedient reclassification of a
newly-listed model is about to expire for
the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII, currently
listed in ESP. In order to retain the option
to re-class this car (and the very similar
WRX STi) for 2005 while still following the
rules process, the SEB is publishing the
following class change proposal:
ITEM 1) Effective 1/1/2005, move the
following cars from ESP to BSP: Mitsubishi
Lancer Evo VIII, Subaru WRX STi."
So there was a time where the SEB could move either car immediately, but that time is past - if I'm reading this correctly. With the above proposal, the SEB has left the door open to move the cars for the 2005 season, but they are now (and have been for more than a month) locked into ESP for the remainder of 2004.

That is my interpretation too. The Evo and STi are in ESP for 2004. They are looking to move them for 2005 to BSP, based on member input and performance.
Both cars could be moved at any time for ProSolos.

You may be correct for the EVO, as it was originally added to ESP in the June 2003 Fastrack. However, the STi was classified much later (I can't seem to find the Fastrack at the moment). My interpretation is the STi could still be moved immediately, while the EVO is safe for this year, as of June 2004.
I still believe both cars could be re-classed immediately for ProSolo.

The SEB needs to decide whether they want to keep all the pony cars etc in ESP (and then they need to move the STi/Evo out) or make it a "new" class with "new" contenders, and keep the STi/Evo there.

Agreed. Why sustain a class for a car that is no longer manufactured? At what point after the hot vehicle has been discontinued will the SEB class a better car in ESP?
Personally, I think all the whining is kinda funny. I enjoy this sport too much to get caught up in it. I'll run ESP until the loudest crying wins, and then I'll run BSP.

Although I've been described as a "competent" local driver, I certainly haven't proven myself nationally considering that I choked at my first and only National event. This was not due to the car mind you, but more likely due to the toxic fumes emanating from the surrounding american iron during their many "rev" battles on grid or, quite possibly, the distraction created by the young lady prancing around the aforementioned iron in her high heels and Subaru racing hat. ;)
Be that as it may, based on your criteria, I should be able to make the final decision for the SEB based on my past vehicular experiences...
