Trunk Swap How To: part 1

spazegun2213 07-14-2006 09:35 AM

Trunk Swap How To:

Remove lock from trunk
Remove the glow in the dark release handle. Once this is done you can get to the lock. Simply twist the orange thing around, and pop the metal rod. Take a screw driver (you also might need a hammer as well) and pry that black clip off. Its really tight on there so you will need to use some force (this clip is exactly like the clip securing the brake lines).

Remove latch from trunk (optional as it may not be needed)
Remove the 2 bolts, twist yellow thing around and pop out that metal rod. You will also need to pop out the cable from that glow in the dark handle.

Remove trunk
Remove the 4 12mm bolts that secure the trunk to the trunk arms. Beware that the STi trunk weighs a TON (something like 50+ lbs). You will also have to unplug the 3rd brake light and clip all the wire retainers off the sti trunk arm to get the trunk off.

Remove Torsion bars
This is the PITA step here. Now, there are 2 ends to the tortoin bar. One end that attaches to the trunk arm and the other that is locked in place. First, get a big wrench or a big screw driver (as long as its big, you will need the torque). The part that attaches to the Arm looks like a U, place that wrench in the under side of that U and pry it off the moving piece on the trunk arm. Move that piece up so it fits flush against the arm, and let that U rest agaist there. Now, you are 1/3 done. Take that same wrench and pry out the ends of the U, once this is done, it might spring a little since its torqued a good bit. Once you have done this simply pull the bar out and start on the second one!!
spazegun2213 07-14-2006 09:36 AM

Install Torsion bars
Just reverse the removal procedure. Place the static part of the bar in its older, and position the trunk arm side as close as possible. Lift the trunk arm up and using that wrench pry the ends of the U into their holders. Then pry down on the U and extend that moveable piece on the trunk arm so it fits onto the bar. Once you have done this, you are done and good to start on the other bar.
Install trunk
Same 4 bolts and remember to check that the trunk fits right before you try to close it.
Install Latch
Install Lock
Remove brake light
Remove Seats
Unplug the light which is in the trunk right under the light, loosen the 2 screws that retain the light.
Take your hand, slide it under the lid and pop off the rear lid that the light sits on (there is a big whole for the light). There are no screws, just 4 (i think its just 4) tabs that hold it in place. You can get to them from inside of the trunk as well.

Install brake light
Swap the lids (they pop right back in), plug the light back in and secure the 2 screws. ALL our cars have 3rd light locations for the STi, and the other third brake light, so you dont need to do any electrical work.
now all you have to do is look at how hot your new trunk is :)

awesome post.. i'm gonna be doing the trunk swap next week!
wrbwrx86 08-21-2006 02:45 PM

i'd imagine that its easier to swap a sti wing with a wrx wing
2.5rsTurbo 08-21-2006 02:55 PM

ya prolly unless the wrx has no wing...then u dont want to pay the price of getting it fixed by some painter
RUrunning 08-21-2006 06:10 PM

damnit. i may be about to do this, and it is going to be a lot more complicated than i thought... i won't even be able to do it at my apartment for a lack of tools

sti wing trunk has way more holes than wrx wing trunk

very nice write up
BlackPearlX 08-03-2007 02:14 PM

Great write up Ross!

Helped a lot!

It was a 3 way swap...
I (wingless) wanted WRX wing
evohuntinwrx (WRX) wanted STi wing
SiNOMORE (Sti) wanted wingless

First of all, we did not remove latches and we were able to swap with no issues...

Few more tips:
1. Orange thing... it is a clip that can be popped off the wire, so the wire would get loose and you will be able to get your lock out (at the beginning we were not sure how to take it off... yes we are newbs in training :)).
2. To get tension bar back in. It helps to snap bar in place, then move arm down, so it is pressed firmly against the bar. Using same huge screwdriver pull tension bar off the arm while holding the arm down, have a friend to push the level (that snappy thing) away from the arm so it will catch the bar. Release... I wish I took pictures since i am not sure if i explained it well. PM for more info :)

It was pretty easy install once we knew what had to be done... but figuring it out took some time...
2mprzya 08-03-2007 03:42 PM

^thats a pretty swet deal for all 3 of you then!
Hawk55 08-14-2007 03:27 AM

good post, thanks for the info.
whwrbwrx 08-14-2007 04:23 AM

you only have to remove the interior if you are going wingless.
Lgaruti 08-23-2007 10:33 PM

Great Info
I want to thank all here especially Spazegun for the trunk swap info.

I swaped trunk lids from my 07' STI to a 2.5i complete with locks and tension rods in about 1 1/2 hours.

I now have a 2007 OBP 2.5i, auto, moon roof, auto air, upgraded 6CD radio, STI wing and 97 miles on the odo for sale.

Any Interest?

Thanks again

Don't be primitive like me and just rip the handle off, breaking it in half. >_< Pop out the plastic screws instead to remove the entire assembly.

OK, question...I'm going to be doing a trunk swap next weekend unless something goes wrong. Why is it necessary to remove and reinstall the tensioners? Why not just do steps 1-3 and then reverse it?
iRace559 09-09-2007 09:00 PM

I just swapped my trunk for an sti one last week. We diddnt change the torsion bars though. It was late at night and it's too big of a pain. Id rather have a trunk that i have to push up then his thats springs up in his face haha.

I don't have anecdotal evidence, but I think after the swap your WRX trunk would be on Viagra  while the STi trunk with the smaller WRX tension bars would be a little limpy. :(
Daggah 09-11-2007 07:17 PM

Well, I just found out that the trunk I'm swapping with had the STi wing added on after the fact, and it's a WRX, so the trunk tensioners are already identical I believe.

^^^ haha +1 that is some funny stuff. Thanks for doing this, i am doing a swap in the next week or so and this will be very informational.
DriftIt 12-05-2007 07:39 PM

Just did mine too. Swapped my WRX trunk for a STi trunk/wing. Definitely swap the tensioners (as previously stated, its pretty easy) and just be careful with the orange plastic clip. It literally took less than 30 min. to swap.

02subiewrxvt 03-21-2008 06:32 PM

last post was over a month ago, but i am swaping my wingless for a wrx trunk with wing, is it super nessesary to swap torsion bars? will the trunk still hold up with my wingless torsion bars or will it fall every time i open it, going to swap this weekend and need to know, i dont care if it takes more effort to open it i just wanna make sure i dont have to hold it open then whole time i wanna get into the trunk, can someone let me know that would be a great help. and if i am going from an 02 wingless to an 02 winged do i need to change latches? just locks correct?
Flynlow151 03-22-2008 01:56 AM

I would swap the bars if you can. I bought an extra wingless trunk but haven't changed the bars, everytime I open it from inside the trunk tries to go through my back window! My old wing'd trunk barely opened with the Sti bars. I am so used to using my key now it doesn't really matter. Once its open it will stay open, but it may not open all the way up with wrx bars.
reddoak 03-28-2008 11:26 PM

I took the wing off my STI and had it like that for quite a while. Needless to say, I had Viagra trunk, big time. I swapped in some WRX springs, no problem.

I put the wing back on (trading trunk tomorrow) and it will stay open, but that's about it. If you pull the release from inside, it will pop the trunk, it just doesn't open at all until you lift it.

If you have no wing, you really need WRX springs, if you have an STI wing, you'll be happier with STI ones.
kasper52 03-29-2008 12:51 PM

I have an 02 bugeye, so if i traded trunks with a different year would i have to take all of handle and pins and all of that off? Wouldnt i just be able to sawp the enitre trunk with pins and handles and not have to switch anything from my trunk to the new one(newer year)? Are the handles in the exact spot as the newer years?
reddoak 03-29-2008 09:07 PM

I swapped with an '03 today for my '07. They're all but identical.

However, you'll need to take off the handle (easy) to get to the lock (not as easy) cylinder so you your key opens the trunk. Don't sweat it, it's not that difficult.
KevinG 04-20-2008 01:13 AM

thanks for this thread... it helped with those dumb springs.
KevinG 04-27-2008 03:01 PM

i swapped my trunk with a cf one... i got it used, and it came with a lock on it but no key... i have been using the inside trunk release to unlock the trunk, no biggy right?... well the trunk stopped latching today, dont know why. i took off the latch off my trunk and replaced it on the cf one (they had the same part number but were shaped differently). when i went to shut it this time it did, but now it wont open. i did not hook up the emergency open handle ,b/c it was not hooked up when i got it so i thought no big deal, when i shot it last time i think the "cancel" switch on the latch might have been in the wrong position.

i can not reach it from the pass thru in the back seat but my gf's kid should be able to reach it, any ideas on how to fix this? he will be back tonight.

edit: for now i have taken off the trunk latch and i have just zip tied it shut from the inside.
hater06 04-27-2008 11:59 PM

i swapped with an STi this weekend. FYI you have to swap the latch from wrx <--> Sti. at least on the 07's you do.

great thread!
Coubs 05-12-2008 12:35 PM

If you are swapping from an 07 wrx wingless to a 07 sti do you still need to swap the latches and if so why? How long did it take to remove the seats to swap the lids?
Thanks

most likely yes... you need to swap everything... why do you need to swap latches? because the parts are different btw wrx and STi's... the trunk will not work properly if you dont... i didnt know i had to swap latches until after the trunk swap was complete. after i closed the trunk and tested the trunk release from inside the cabin the trunk would not pop up. after i swapped the latch it was all good.

you only need to take off your seats to install the 3rd brake light... shouldnt take more than 10 mins to take them off...
Coubs 05-12-2008 04:49 PM

Thanks! Should be wingless shortly.

weird. i didn't have that problem at all. wingless (06) to STi (04) i went, and recently back to OEM (06) wingless, and now CF wingless (04). never switched latches.
Foxhound 08-15-2008 07:32 PM

I've swapped trunks 4 times in the past 2 months, ranging from 04+, and they're all the same.
JohnQTard 08-30-2008 03:39 PM

i just swapped my STi trunk for a WRX today, and the latches appear to be the same. Regardless of how they look, both trunks function perfectly normal. The how-to has great information, I'd say check your latches to determine if they really need to be switched.

I know this is pretty old but I just finished doing this.

I found getting the base of the 'U' shape piece up on its holder was a PITA but using a small hammer to torque it in was very easy. Just stick it in and turn it so the hook on the hammer can pull on that metal crossbar that goes through the 'U'.

yes. all 02-07
1stockwrx 01-23-2009 10:46 AM

so you need to cut the wires going to the wrx wing led?:(
FreNetiC STi 01-23-2009 10:49 AM

^no. All impreza's come with that harness. It simply clips on to the led harness for the WRX wing. Just un-clip it when swapping.
1stockwrx 01-23-2009 10:55 AM

COOL!thanks!so im assuming that the clip is hidden under the trunk?.lol
FreNetiC STi 01-23-2009 11:01 AM

the clip if you have a wrx or STi wing is the black plastic wire protector that runs up the right post (that lifts the trunk) un-clip that from the car harness which is in the back right of the trunk.
brandonswrx 04-18-2009 04:13 PM

man this thread helped me out alot today when I did my trunk swap.
hatchd 04-27-2009 12:11 PM

Great info in this thread. We did one saturday and it literally took under 20 minutes to remove the old one and put the new one on.

As far as the screwdriver/wrench/vice grips idea......apparently if you're a beast like my buddy that helped me you need none of the above. I popped the trunk, walked to the front of the car to grab a screwdriver, and came back to him setting the springs on the ground. Took them off and put them in by hand, no tools needed. He's a damn monster apparently.

One tip I would have is to put the trunk on we popped down the passthrough in the back seat, aligned the trunk on the outside, and he crawled in there and tightened up the bolts while I held the trunk down. Kind of a PITA, but we bolted it up and were done. No need to readjust.
ThreeEleven 04-28-2009 08:58 PM

this thread helped lead me through the trunk swap tonight. I feel this thread also needs to be linked for further detail:

Also, the latch does not need to be swapped.

Just a heads up to those stuck reinstalling the torsion bars. Lay on your back in the trunk! It may be obviously to the more mechanically inclined but I was able to put the bars back in without any tools. You get way more leverage this way. Again, this is probably obviouos to some but it helped me immensely.

Can someone post a picture of the orientation of the metal bar that goes from the lock to the latch. I tired everything and it works once than pops off. Don't know which direction the orange and white clip have to be in :(
