Wow, more work than I thought.
The last trunk swap thread said, you just asked a soccer mom in the parking lot to trade and it took 5 minutes.
Was he wrong

most important tip: grab a blanket and cover the car so when you remove the trunk you can rest it on the blanket without ruining anything. much much easier
Just a heads up to those stuck reinstalling the torsion bars. Lay on your back in the trunk! It may be obviously to the more mechanically inclined but I was able to put the bars back in without any tools. You get way more leverage this way. Again, this is probably obviouos to some but it helped me immensely.
+1 those things are tough if you dont have a good angle on them

yeah i just swapped mine from my original swap which was a wrx to sti swap and now i went from the sti to cf wingless. swapped tensioners the first time from wrx to sti and now i had to take them completly off for the cf.

Great write up. I just swapped my wrx wing for wingless this morning. We would have been ok to not swap the tension bars, but it only took 15 minutes and it wasn't that bad at all. They definitely had different tension strengths.
We did not swap the latch, this step seems unnecessary.
We also only removed the black clip on the keyhole. There is no need to remove the other silver c clip.
Another question that was answered was that his wingless car had an empty clip for the third brake light on my wrx wing.

i swapped my sti lid for wrx lid and all we did was undo the 4 bolts holding them on and wallah... took 15mins total for both cars and 8 bolts... sure my trunk came up lil faster but no harm. Only downside was keyhole was not done. Next one I do I am doing the keyhole but not worried about tension bars really. Seems like pita

I got 2 trunks. One STI, another wingless with molded Mines lip. I switch them every few weeks.

I'm so glad I traded a guy a wrx trunk for a wingless because we didnt have to swap torsion bars.

I have a noob question. Why do you need to replace the brake light (step 5) and what happens if you swap to a rs trunk that doesn't have a light on the trunk?

How hard was it? Did it take you a long time?

pretty good write up... the first time i did a swap i did the large screw driver to release the tension bars.
Did it two more times and found out its easier once you have taken the lid off if you just push down on both sides at the U joint of the lid arm. The U joint is moveable. you push down on the tension bar (you gotta put your ass into it or be pretty strong) then with your finger flip the U joint back.
the tension bar now should just pull right off.

Got a question. I'm swappin my STi trunk for another STi (04 to 04) trunk. I'm swapping because mine has rust so I'm getting a replacment from a wrecked car.
I don't have to swap the tension rods, correct (it's only if swapping trunks of different weights, like between WRX and STi)? I can just unbolt the trunk, wires, and swap the locking mechanism and it's done?

does anyone have clunking issue after the swap?
I swapped my wrx wing/torsion bar with sti wing/without a torsion bar, and I thought that could be a possible reason for clunking, so I changed my wrx torsion bar to sti one, but it still clunks :(

I'm about to swap an STi trunk to my WRX. When are you getting the clunking?..just upon closing it?..or when driving?

Noob question here. If swapping a wrx trunk with wing (not STI) for a wingless trunk do you still need to swap torsion bars? The way I see it, you just unbolt the trunks and swap along with rear deck lids for 3rd brake light, correct?
| AdnoFal | 03-29-2013 11:24 AM |
Yeah switch them up. I left the WRX torsion bars and the wingless trunk flips up fairly violently. Torsion bar swapping is not difficult at all.
Edit: I ended up swapping the wingless torsion bars in.

| NYInk | 03-29-2013 11:33 AM |
Ok, thanks. From what I've been reading it's best to do it once the trunk lid is removed. You only need a screw driver and maybe pliers right?
| AdnoFal | 03-29-2013 07:25 PM |
I did it with the trunk on, but you're correct in saying that it's best to do with it off. If you do have the trunk on, have someone holding it up, or else it'll ash down onto your head/back when the tension is lost.
Use a big (thick) screw driver if you can.
At least with the wingless torsion bars, they are weaker so you can more easily manipulate them with your hands.
