What fuel level do you guys run at auto-x?

I was wondering what fuel levels people like to run their cars at for auto-x events. I guess the considerations are, less weight, balance of the car, sloshing of the fuel, and possible fuel starvation.
| KC | 06-15-2004 10:19 AM |
My 2002 Wagon can run all the way 'till empty.
| MNbiker | 06-15-2004 10:48 AM |
I can go about 3 runs past the point where the fuel light goes on.

(another '02 wagon)
p.s. KC can't QUITE go until empty. I seem to remember him having fuel starvation problems at Peru last year. ;)

Well that's becuse there was like a gallon left.. but I'm deep into the empty ... like starting to run when the light comes on. :) It was the challenge rounds that I needed gas for. :D
| del105 | 06-15-2004 11:12 AM |
I like to start when the light comes on or a bit less than 1/4 tank if I have co-driver.
| Zuffy | 06-15-2004 11:44 AM |
WOW, that's IMPREZIVE that our cars can run so low fuel. for great fuel system design!

I tend to find myself autocrossing with whatever fuel level is in the tank when I show up :)

With a codriver we start at 1/4 tank.
In toledo this weekend we ran through the 1/4 tank and another 5 gallon can

I have no idea how the WRX fuel tank is designed but it's one of the best no starvation cars I've ever seen. I usually run about an 1/8th tank because with the R tires and sweepers it will cut out if the light is on. The RS on the other hand sucks and so does the STI, I don't know what they changed...

As long as you dont get fuel starvation why would it matter how much fuel is in the tank?

I only got fuel starvation once when running Dstock co-driving, the light came on when gridding up the car, ran the car to warm stuff up, by the third run (well 6 runs, had a co-driver) the car sputtered in a long sweeper.

Kinda off topic but how much fuel do you run on the track? I am going to Lime Rock next week and was just curious.

Start with a full tank because you are going to end up with an empty one anyway.

AutoX... I try for nothing less than a "tall" 1/4. usualy 1/2 a tank is better as its REALLY hard to run a top time if the car shuts off at the end of every long 180 sweeper.
For a track day? Start with a full tank. Lol 4mpg or so at WOT.

We (still) have to run a full tank or it will starve at anything 3/4 or less. It gets worse as the level drops.
I have a fix, but haven't gotten to installing it yet.......Hopefully it'll be in for this weekend.

That sucks. Can you use a fuel pump similar to the STI one with the extra chamber?

Did they change the fuel pump design between '96 and '97? I have run my '96L in AutoX with so little fuel in the tank that when I made it to the gas station (about 1/4 mile from the site) I put in 13.2 gallons (13.1 gallon tank according to the owners manual) and I have never had any problems with fuel starvation.

SpeedyHAM: The L tank is different than the larger tanks. It's shape lends itself to not starving as much. I can run down below 1/8th on my 96L due to the shape of the tank. The fuel line routing has alot to do with this too....

I was always told that you should never run the fuel level low enough to get fuel starvation!? Most guys I race with wont run with the tank under half full for engine safety sake.
WOT + sudden drop in fuel pressure = leanout & melted pistons
I have heard of a few guys here in Australia that have killed engines due to a lean out caused by cornering under high G's - the fuel surges in the tank causing it to suck air for a split second.

I'd love to post something from the Service Manuals but I'm deeply paranoid about posting up copyrighted information...
Either way, EVERYBODY should own a copy of the Service Manual, downloadable from here for $20.
Looking at the description, I see that fuel is transferred from the left side of the tank to the right side (where the fuel pickup is) by fuel returning from the front of the car (venturi effect). If the venturi is clogged then the 'left-to-right-pump' is bypassed. Considering that, if anybody is having fuel starvation problems maybe they should dump in a bottle or two of that fuel injector cleaner stuff to free up the venturi?
Edit: OK, here's another interesting (to me) thought. Folks who have modded their car to the point where they have significantly increased fuel usage but have not had to upgrade the fuel pump might not have much fuel returning to the tank, which means very little pumping action from the left to right sections of the tank...

02 WRX, and I get hesitation as I close in to 1/2 a tank, from full to 2/3 it is fine, after that...not so much. Dealer tried dumping some cleaner into the tank to clean the valve or sock or whatever.....didn't work.
