I think the 03 looks better.
I guess by better, I mean more individualistic. The 04 lost some of its own style and picked up everyone elses. Its not a bad looking car, but I bought an 03 for its differences from other vehicles.

Going by the stock models I would have to say the 04 model, however after a few mods the 03's look awfully damn nice.
So if you can save 1k by going with an 03 dump that savings into the JDM lights .... Then my vote goes with the 03's

2004...with the headlight mod. The concept pics of the STi had the inside rims of the lights blacked out.

My unwarranted 2 cents...The 2004 headlights are a stylistic ripoff of the RSX which is, in turn, a ripoff of the BMW 3-series. The line is ruined by a protrusion into the bumper of unnecessary circular radius. The taillights suffered the same cruel fate. The grille and bumper are integrated, which means no cool grille swaps. The scoop has what the OT folks call 'teh ghey' (relative to MY Sti scoop...), and the foglight covers (and the misshapen area they cover) quite simply look like ass. I am SOOO glad I ante'd up for the '03 before they ruined the classic rally look of both headlights and foglights. The '04 is interesting, but it is not IMHO the 'classic WRX' styling. Long live the '03!!!

i agree with P03W and Silver Mojo...the 04 is pretty nice, i think the interior is a lot nicer on it, but the front end looks too similar to other cars like the rsx and the civic..it has that headlight shape that most other cars have as well..but everyone has their opinions :) i'd still opt for the STi over the 03 wrx tho hehe ;)

03 looks better because of the porsche influence... you really cant beat that... and now that its only a 2 year generation, it's more unique! The 04 is too rounded off in the front IMHO. I would have been happier if they made the headlights have a crisper edge to them. Sharp and defined, but smooth and curving is supposed to be the new trend... but I dont see it here in the 04... so I'll stick with my funky millenium-esque porschelike-but-cheap-like-a-neon look as long as I can =)

I'm still a fan of the bugeye's...and the body style. All the kits that have been posted, make me not even recognize the WRX...I guess I'm fond of the '03...:rolleyes:

I don't like the new front bumper/headlites/fogs at all !
The colors are ok... white, silver and wrb pearl stayed the same, but mbp is now just black (nice though), sedona red is now... plain old red (awesome) and for the RS/TS, they ditch brp and changed it to pacifica blue pearl, more like purple (blech)... and why subaru can't just use regular yellow ? that would look great... oh well.
check out the premium package (nice sunroof) and the interior is nice too... nicer seats, silver trim was darkened to match better...
but I'll keep my 02 thank u very much :p

You'll be able to tell more when more 2004's are on the streets and modified. Ditto on the headlight mod. Comparing the front of the STi and WRC car shows the huge difference. I still think that the Protege is closer to the shape that the Impreza should have taken in 2001/2002. The wagon even has flares.:(

Take a 2003 WRX, wait until 04 comes out, somebody will want to swap out their 04 interior for $ or for other parts.
Or..
Do a 04' to bug-eye conversions..
Take a 04' WRX and find a buddy who likes non-bugeyes, must be the same color cars and just swap the wrong front end and rear end.
The 03 + 04 cars are structually the same.

For looks, has to be the Bugeye (MY02/03 in US, MY01/02 in Europe/Japan) since it's so unique.
IMO the MY04 looks like an overgrown Civic sedan.

I like the looks of the '04 alot better than the '03. I never did like the bug eyed headlights the new WRX looks more sleek and aggresive. The interior is a definate step up. As for mods I am interested in seeing what comes out soon.

well the BMW is a 2 piece design, so I dont even kno how that one can be similar...the RSX and the MY04 WRX are both 1 piece headlights, but they are totally different..the RSX ones come to a point and the MY04 ones stay rounded...I dont kno, maybe its just be but I think they are completly different...

I actually like the headlights but hate the new fog lights and the front spoiler... I saw a picture of a 04 WRX the other day that had the coolest looking front spoiler that looks similar to the STI, but it had much bigger air intake scoops where the fogs would be... (And of course I can't find the picture now... should have saved it when I had the chance... :)
I have a 03 with 3k miles and had the 03/04 debate myself. Went with the 03 cause I kinda like the bugeyes, and the WRX doesn't come in a 6 speed in the 04's... This is correct right?

not really. i've seen maybe 4-5 ver7 replicas. anyway sti's weren't released in the US during the bugeye era so there is no way it can be confused as being an actual STi.

I like the 02-03 year put in a nice set of aftermarket lights and you get rid of the bug eye. From the front the 04 looks like a luxury car with a hood scoop it�s to busy and big. Have you seen it from the side view it�s a long and big sweeping nose. To me the front doesn�t match to the car, what I mean is it looks like a luxury car from the front but the side looks like a compact sports car. The two body style don�t go together to me.. But that�s just my opinion and we know about opinion everyone has one. For those buying 04 if you like then buy it, that�s all that counts� I will stick to my 03 wagon.. seeya on the road..

Yes to #1 and on #2 there were rumors that the 04 WRX would be a 6-speed, at least I was hoping it was... The 6-speed is only avail on the STI... To the best of knowledge at least...

aftermarket lights just tone down the bug eyes, they don't get rid of it... there are still the 2 lumps on each side of the front... it would cost a lot to get rid of that...

im going to put my vote on the 02-03. I waited to see what the 04 looked like and still bought my 03.
The new lights look way to confused for my taste. I am not talking about the shape but the placement of the lights inside the light case. I feel they could have atleast pulled off a similar look to the BlitZen. They are simple and fill the shape out perfectly. The new lights just fall short of the goal, continuity. I just wish the 04 had the new legacy lights. HEll i would have bought one instantly.
dont even like the rear bumper. They rounded the sucker off TO much. I do give props for the molded rear lights. Im talking about the weird space where the 02 lights meet the fenders.
Interiror wise i just want the center tach. There are many sources that state the new seats lack support. Its like a big breasted women trying to run without a bra. Sure it looks nice but hell its going to hurt.
Besides i love the bull dog look on my car. I swear most people say that it looks like a neon. I mean sheesh how many neons are sold in japan? Then again i half to compare the wrx to a porsche. I mean look at subarus choice of yellow at first. The color resembles the porsche (new style) paste yellow.

it's funny that when the 02-03's were out i never really liked them and was waiting for the 04's to come here..but after looking at the pictures and everything, they just kinda loose their aggressive look, and they do look like most cars coming from japan, take the badge away, hide the scoop and ask someone what car it is... anyways, the interior is a lot nicer in the 04's but not enough to keep me from the deals you can get on the 03's now :)

I originally hated the 02/03 bugeyes and was really excited when I saw the 04 redesign, and I had my heart set on getting one when it came out. However, getting an 03 for $1500 under invoice was an offer I couldn't refuse.
Now that I own the 03, I am beginning to see the flaws of the 04. Yes, I know that part of this is probably me trying to justify my 03 purchase! :lol: But, trying to be as objective as possible, I agree with others that the 04 has derivative styling cues (based on RSX and others), and hastily carried out, at that. I don't think they're necessarily ugly, but sometimes I look at it and I think they were either trying too hard or not trying enough.
Not that I love the stock bugeyes now -- I don't. But I think an 03 with JDM/EDM headlights -- OR Morettes and a decent front lip -- look infinitely better than the stock 04 lights.
I do prefer the 04's new interior though, as well as the slightly redesigned taillights. (Well, I prefer it without the little round flourish at the bottom. But that's why I got the aftermarket "jag-style" taillights for my 03. Same concept, no round thingy.) And had I gone for an 04, I certainly would have opted for heated seats and moonroof.

03. 04's look cheap and bland, especially without the trademark WRX huge fog lights. i do love the interior and sunroof, but my car looks alot sportier :D

I like big hood scoops and all but the '04 looks like you could shove a small animal in it. It's a very sleek looking car but a lot of cars are sleek. Subaru is good at "quirky" and I love my bug-eyed car. It has personality and it has a feel only subaru can give. The '04 is great but I'd get tired of it cuz it just feels, for want of better explanations, "too trying to be cool." I'm into the '03 and I wish the '03 had that engine :-D Then it'd really be the ish...

I would have voted 2004 (I own an '02) until I saw one in person. The new lights are cool, but the way they bulged up the hood and carried it over the front bumper is pretty damn ugly in person. I encourage everybody to make sure they see the '04 in person before they decide, in some areas the pics just don't translate well.

I have an 03, and I also had a similiar debate regarding 03 vs 04. I got the 03 because (kicking the dead headlights=)), the size and placement of the headlights were very common to everythin else. Also, for the interior - I got leather seats in there, so it has a very luxo/sport look inside...jus my thoughts...

Okay okay...here's my vote...as we all know that all of the newer cars are getting ugly. Even the EVO 8 yuckie....Evo 5-7 sexy...as i am a proud owner of MY01 RS...they are much much more sexier...than the new...03-04 WRX...Performance wise may be of no match but...still look at the other guys, RSX = Yuckie, SI = Super mini van, Neon = wannabe UFO...with a rear spoiler...and most of all EVo 8 the big ulgy front of a Grandprix combine with those IS wannabe Altezzas...Yuckie...to all of the newer cars...please stay original... I like what they did with fords...GTO concept...it's classic original look...that is tight...as for the Mustang....i have nutin to say cause after all it's a muscle car. Peace outz...

I dont know what subaru was really thinking, but really both the 03 and 04 are aquired tastes many many people think both these models are ugly. Personally, i think that both of them look awesome from the behind, and both have a not so matching front. But i think that both look awesome with the right front lip and such. But the bottom line is, the new headlights are even funkier than the 03's. My question is why didnt they bring the wrx over in 00 and 01. gc8's rule in exterior looks, period.

I can't say there is any Subaru (stock) out there that looks [B]WOW THATS SWEET![/B], from '90 to '04!
If thats what I wanted I would have bought the IS300 or somthing else.
As for why I do like MY02 over MY04:
There is noway in hell there are going to be school bus of kids, dads in mini-van's and cool guy in his civic stairing out the window thumbs up/waving at me in a '04 or pre 2002. The 02-03 just stands out!! Good or bad? No just different and different gets noticed. Like the kid in the Hyndia ad (LOL)" In this sports car I get noticed" expect with the WRX it's true! :D :p
When you bought your WRX/2.5RS ask your self this, What did I buy it for? I can garentee you, looks was not high on that list, you bought it for what it is, the funest cars on the road for the money! No ifs ands or buts!
