A vid of my slow HPDE lap at Buttonwillow part 1

A vid of my slow HPDE lap at Buttonwillow
I attended the Speed Ventures event on FEB 25 at Buttonwillow. The track was in 25A configuration in a clockwise direction. I liked the track a lot with the elevation changes and especially the esses! :disco: The event was booked full so I went to the Beginner group just to drive the track. I hit a lot of "traffic" on the track but it was a little ego boost passing all the noobs

I had the pleasure of riding shotgun with him on one of his runs, and it was a pretty fast course! You spend a lot of time hovering near 100mph. There wasn't anyplace where he needed 2nd gear. Pretty fun!

The video really doesn't quite show how fast the last part of the track is, especially those esses! And that second elevation change is wicked... I can't believe how much fun those are with 4WD. I bet the RWD guys weren't flying over that at WOT. ;)

SubyFi,

Because its listed in another thread here, what are you using for a camera mount?

Best,
Dan

www.Chasecam.com window mount. Works great!

I let my friend with a Evo VIII borrow my camera that day too. I think he was chasing a Chrysler Crossfire.

Wow, that EVO did not seem to close on the Crossfire. Was that a SRT version of the Crossfire?

Btw, is the camera mounted on the rear glass or the passenger rear window?

Thanks for sharing the images....looked like a lot of fun!

Great run... and it looked like you couldn't have picked a better track day!

Not sure. The Evo just has a rear sway bar and R compound tires without any engine mods.

The Chasecam mount was stuck on the rear glass on the right side.

....random question.....
Do HPDE's require full face helmets or can you use open face?

Not all HPDEs are created equal ;)

On the west coast NASA has 'open classes' with open passing which you won't find much of on the east coast. Also, smaller clubs are generally more lax but very few will let you run with short sleeves (like in the video).

For most HPDEs, open face will be fine. I personally like a full face with the visor down; I feel safer.
noahrexion 03-01-2006 02:29 PM

you can use openface :)

Great vid! I like your run a lil better than the EVO's cause you passed the Cayman
ein86 03-01-2006 02:41 PM

Thanks, I have 2 helmets in the mail right now, a full face being returned and the open face to replace it; it didnt cross my mind until now as to if the open would be legal for HPDE's. I didnt like how the full fit with glasses :(
Im not sure if I will do many HPDE's though, but I want to keep the option open.
SubyFi 03-01-2006 02:44 PM

I have a full face Pyrotect SA 2005 helmet. I leave the visor up to let fresh air in.

It was interesting on some sites I have seen warnings against using a full face helmet with an airbag equipped car. anyone know of a definitive source is regard to this issue?
SubyFi 03-01-2006 05:26 PM

I have never heard about an incident involving injuries caused by airbags and full face helmets.

I just spoke to John at SCCA about where this advisory originated from. He says that the Tech Manager John Gills wrote the advisory from information from a contact at Delphi who were testing the application of airbags in Formula 1 cars in the late 90s. I guess one of their tests resulted in that the chin of the driver may be injured from contact of the chinbar of the helmet as the airbag deployed. Airbag research in Formula 1 was stopped in favor of the HANS device. The HANS device was made compulsory for Formula 1 around 2001.

A Formula car cockpit is totally different than a passenger car's one. I am not sure if you can compare the tests done in a Formula 1 cockpit to a passenger car cockpit. The Delphi findings may have influenced the SCCA's advisory on not having airbags and full face helmet. In the advisory it does say "been brought to the attention". I asked John at the SCCA if there were any reported incidents with full faced helmets and airbags that occured at an event. He said no.

No definitive answer. The FIA did some airbag research for F1, and found that the airbag could possibly impact the helmet's chin bar and possibly break the driver's jaw. A couple of years ago the SCCA found out about this and issued a warning saying that the possibility could not be ruled out. (I am guessing the motiviation for the warning was so that they wouldn't be liable if it did happen, not because they truly believed there is a great risk.) And there is a huge difference between saying you might break your jaw if you wear a closed-face helmet, and that wearing an open-face helmet is safer than closed-face. Since just about all of the motorsports safety research goes into F1, WRC, NASCAR, etc., and not street legal cars doing HPDEs I doubt there is much more data on this.

Based on accidents I've read about involving open-face helmets, I still think closed-face helmets are safer even with airbags. But that's just my layman's opinion.

I did hear about this happening during a minor autox accident where an airbag deployed. If it was a non-SCCA event, John may not have heard about it. Then again, it is very possible that it is just a bogus intarweb rumor.

I agree! Especially in a lawsuit happy society.

You looked real relaxed. Great Driving. What revs were you upshifting at?
Rally_wgn 03-02-2006 10:01 AM

Thanks for the responses I'll continue to research this. I'll do a new post if I find anything solid.

It must be all those years attending HPDEs :) I set my shift light at 6000 RPM, so I shift around when the buzzer goes off.

It was an SRT6. Weighs about the same as the EVO but has about 70 more HP. That and a good driver ;)
jaxscuby 03-03-2006 08:54 PM

yeah, that was slow.. ..yeah right...
looks like fun track...:p
