What Will $3000 Buy Me In STX? part 1

What Will $3000 Buy Me In STX?
OK, I've searched, looked at the mods list for KC and Tom and others, and have a copy of Tom's $2600 STX parts list from back in 2003. A lot of these type posts are 'I have x dollars, how should I spend it?' Well I too am looking a little help, but I'll give you a little more information as to my situation. I have an 04 WRX, stock except for the STP catback and a set of Falken BK451's on the stock wheels. I also have another set of stock wheels with the RE92's mounted. I live in Virginia and Autocross at FedEx field with the WDC region of the SCCA. I have run two whole autocrosses in my like. I did race a 85 RX7 in ITS for a year in 1989, so I have that either going for me, or working against me depending on your point of view.

I agree with KC, upgrade the suspension first, then do power stuff. I also know the first thing I need is more seat time, I'll be attending either the local autocross school or an Evolution school, and every autocross I can in the area.

I plan on running STX rather than D Stock. The car is about as loud as it can be right now, as VA has some funcky exhuast laws. I need the RE92's for winter tires, and would assume the 451's would make suitable rain tires. I have no plans at this time to track the car, but I might rally-x it again.

So there it is, how would you folks spend $3000 in STX modifications?

And if ButtDyno reads this, what did end up doing?

Thanks

Bruce

I think Rally-x and auto-x are going to be at somewhat different ends of the suspension development spectrum. The "best" auto-x suspension set-ups are coilovers with high spring rates (biased to the rear), thicker front & rear sway bars. Ride height some where around 13.5" from wheel center to fender.

If you plan on doing both auto-x and rally-x your best bet is probably going to be one of the STi V7 or V8 take-offs with upgraded sway bars.
04RedWRX 09-08-2004 09:06 AM

Well between the two I would pick autocross. While I may never get to the top of the heap in STX, Rally-X is for fun and to get the car dirty once in a while.
MNbiker 09-08-2004 09:45 AM

Spending other people's money....fun, fun, fun!

Here's my "STX on a budget" list:

Used 17 x 7.5 Rota wheels (doesn't really matter which model) $450
New Falken Azenis 225/45-17 $550 w/mounting, etc.
Used Tein HA or JIC FLT-A2 coilovers w/front camber plates $750
Used Uppipe $150
Used Turbo-back exhaust $700
New rear camber bolts $25
Used F/R Cusco or Whiteline anti-sway bars $200

By my calculations, that's $2,825. Spend the rest on an alignment & some gaskets, and you're good to go! :)

I was going to say your falken pricing seemed a little high but I just went out to look and prices on them have gone up by almost $20 a tire... still I think you're about $50 high (vs the $100+ I was thinking) , but $50 out of $3000 is small change. you really think you can get some JIC's for $750? wow, I need to look harder.

the suspension that Fred's running on his RS is a rally-x setup that he's had decent luck w/ on the auto-x course. I forget exactly what model (HG?) but it's a Tein setup. I think that would take up most of your $3k though to go that route (IIRC they're around $2200)

And I quote
"To compete at a national level in DS I needed 2 new Hoosiers for every event.
I bought a set of KDs which have lasted me all year....I also can track the car and its FUN
....It would be impossible to have a fun track car in DS trim.

Here is MY mod list
-Teins
-Camber/castor plates
-K&N
-ECUtek
-Custom turboback
-swaybars
-pulleys
-KDs

Here is what you NEED for a nationally competitive car
-Revalved Konis, GCs $1100
-Used Swaybars $200
-Custom turboback w/ high flow cat $500
-225 Azenis mounted on your 17s $500
-Noltec Camber plates $300
Thats all you need for a car that can WIN at nationals $2600
There really is nothing else that you need to WIN at nationals.......seriously......"

It's in a thread by buttdyno about moving from D stock to STX.

$468 for the tires from Discount Tire, plus $30 sales tax, plus $15/tire for mounting & balancing = $558.

I saw a used set go for that a few months back, although $900 seems more common. You should be able to pick up used Tein HA or SS for that price point pretty easily.

Hey, it's not LUCK, it's SKILL. :p :)

I have the Tein Type HG suspension, which is GREAT for rallycross, relatively comfy for the street, and does pretty well at autox. Trying it out at VIR this weekend, so Monday I'll have enough info for a complete review.

I tried Konis & 350 lb ground control springs for autox, and it worked great, but the ride sucked & so couldn't use the car for anything other than autox (or track, but I never got around to that with that setup).

The HG is a lot less stiff & not near as responsive on pavement, but it's really not that much slower time-wise. If you don't want to spend that much money, the STi suspension should be pretty close - but without the adjustability.
cooleyjb 09-08-2004 12:57 PM

3000 bucks could get all the national drivers REALLY hungover and out of their game for nationals too.

ahh.. forgot sales tax! the azenis were right around $100 last time I bought some so they've gone up a bit :) looks like the FK451's took their price slot and bumped the Azenis up.

if you've got a local DT, add between $5-10 a tire to DT Direct's prices and order them through the local DT. It'll include mounting, balancing (lifetime), and some road hazard protection (ie: nails that are patchable). Ends up being a slighlty better deal.

Fred.. what's the price tag on the HG's? and do they make new impreza fitment?

hijack -- Hey what high flow CAT are you guys running (for those who don't have one in the downpipe:) )?

You should talk to Fatih at www.SELGP.com. He really knows suspensions and suspension tuning.

Two thumbs-up on the recommendation to talk to FT at SEL GP. He did a great job making suspension recommendations for us. And he did an absolutely tremendous job in getting stuff to our doorstep super-quick. We've been extremely happy. :disco:

You have to have the last cat in the system for STX... or you arent STX legal!!!

Protest!! Protest!!! :)

j/k.

Hmm.. I think all you really need to be competitive is a good alignment, some revalved inserts, and Azenis. Heck, look how well Fred did in an almost sotck GM6 (Aarons old one). He was ruling in that thing.

I think the most important thing is your will to win...

 Well.. some background material..
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610069

I have the STi RA stuff, but I am buying coilovers in the offseason, so that I can come back next year ready to kick some Mini ass. (if I ever learn how to drive of course) [emailprotected] has been really helpful recommending stuff and that is who I will be going to :)

To save $ you could buy 215-45-16 Azenis and a set of stock wheels..

The PITA for you though, is keeping the car rallycrossable. I wonder how much an old beater car, that could handle the dirt, would be? Some old Volvo brick, or VW, or AWD DSM, or Legacy wagon or something..

You only need a single cat for STX. It can be ANYWHERE in the exhaust system, as long as it's not more than 6" further downstream than the location of the final OE cat.

Hey John,

I'll toss Rally-X in a minute, it's fun, but anything I do takes me out of the stock class, and lets me run against fully prepped rally cars. Talk about getting your butt handled to you...

This whole deal is driven by my year end bonus from work. Bigger bonus, more toys, smaller bonus less toys.

DrBiggly 09-09-2004 12:33 PM

04RedWRX, since you're in the WDC region already, are you going to be at the Subaru Challenge? If so, you'll have the opportunity to talk to and see at least 2 of top STX cars in the country and talk to their owners. :)
04RedWRX 09-09-2004 01:18 PM

I am looking forward to it. In fact I'm going to try and get a ride with one of them, money or sprits may be involved, but I'm sure it would worth it.

Recommend the Tein Type HG coilovers. I know a couple of people that kick ass in both Rally-X and Auto-X with that setup. That, tires, and a good driver. :D

I'm thinking that with the HG's on the car now, the setup procedure is going to be installing the 22mm front/ 24mm rear sway bars for autox/track & removing them for rallyx. Only other differences will be the damper settings & the tires.

I'm getting giddy -- VIR Patriot course < 48 hours away.

Be careful of combo caster/camber plates. The rules does not say that you can adjust castor. Castor changes are allowed only as a result of using camber plates or crash bolts.

You're better off playing it safe with a set of camber only plates.

And I quote from the 2004 SCCA National Solo Rules, Section 14.8.C:
"Caster changes resulting from the use of camber plates are permitted."

If caster/camber plates weren't allowed, most of the top cars in STX would be illegal. Please be sure of your facts before making recommendations....
