Cons to a carbon fiber hood...

Most likely am going to replace my hail damaged hood with carbon fiber. Any youse folks out there have any cons to doing this? Any bad experiences? Just want to know what I'm getting into.
The plan is to not paint it and reuse the stock hood scoop.

the only thing i can think of off the top of my head is that if you ever got in another wreck it wont "crumple" like metal would to absorb impact. But i dont think the stock hood is designed to absorb much energy from a crash so I think your ok.

does anyone know the weight difference between carbon fiber and our stock hoods? i have hail damage as well... and was think about replacing it wih cf, but want to stay in stock class for autocross.....
so i dont think i will do cf, but i'm still curious as to the weight difference....
thanks

The weight difference is almost neglegible... a few pounds at most... the biggest differece is the need for hood pins... you don't have to get them, but for safety sakes you should...
that's a big negative for me as I don't like the look of hood pins...
another thing is inexpensive CF hoods turn yellow over time... sunlight wreaks havoc on them...

I think for the WRX, CF vs. stock hood, the weight difference is not too much... but for the gc8.. my stock hood was definitely not as lite as the CF hood I put on. :D
Hoodpins are cool! They keep the CF hood from flying away.

why would that move you to SM? if the weight and shape is the same....

If I had a carbon hood, I would still get it painted.

i got one for hell hella hella cheap and replace mine cause it was all chipped to shat. here are some pros and cons i have about carbon fiber hoods.
1. its about 1 maybe 2 lbs heavier than the stock aluminum hood.
2. chics do dig carbon!
3. youll see **** chips much easier on these hoods
4. id suggest putting hood pins on for saftey also at 80-90mph mine shakes alot
5. id also suggest parking away from all other cars when you go to malls, grocery stores etc. when you come back youll have finger prints all over your hood for people that dont know what the hell it is since it dosent match the rest of the car. the best line i ever heard from someone was "how did they paint your hood like that" my gf dad.
6. another bad thing is youll see dust and sand bugs and other stuff like that more on you hood than on the rest of your car (depending what color your car is)
7. ive had my hood for about 7 months now and my buddy had it on his car for close to 6 months and i dont have any yellowing yet so im not worried about it. but theyre is a chance that the cheaper hoods will fade due to lack of uv protectant coat so beware.

I think CF will show scratches etc more than the painted hood.
Its also gonna be a cop magnet, not that you'll ever go over the speed limit or anything.

so if you paint a cf hood then you can no longer tell that it's CF? I've seen one pic of a painted cf hood where you could still see the cf thatching peaking through the coats of paint, like at certain angles of light. was I just imagining things?
| jaypride | 05-14-2003 06:06 PM |
I've never seen anything like that. It may be out there though. If it is, I'd like to see it.

my wife only looks at the side mirror up close. :(

I'm putting hood pins in mine pretty soon. It does like to move a lot at speed. I don't think there is any weight savings with the CF hood. I would paint mine, but I'd rather use the money to make it faster.

ive gone to some import car shows where some people have thrown a little bit of paint over their carbon hoods and it looks pretty tight. when i asked them how they got theyre hoods like that they said that they dont really paint it like a regular hood they just spray the paint into the air instead of onto the hood directly. that way it dosent cover the hood completely only in certain areas so its not that thick. that is how you probably saw the carbon fiber weave on in angles i all depends on how much paint you want on the hood to give it the desired look.
