Prodrive shift knob sleeve part 1

Kahres05 03-03-2007 11:30 PM

Prodrive shift knob sleeve
OK Guy's....I've heard all of the complaints or freezing hands and scorched palms....here is my answer. I had my fiance make this just tonight...in an hour...and I must say, I love the fit and finish. So what do you guys think?....I had her make the top silver and black on the bottom. I'm sure I will have her make more for me. We were debating of selling these because I heard of people thinking of getting rid of there prodrive knobs because of the weather extremes....so please give us your thoughts..

here are the pics....

Be careful when you mention selling things around here. Nick is always looking to make sure no one is evading the vendor fees.

Here was my solution (baby socks - available at a lot of places):

It works really well during FL summers :)

EDIT: Sorry... my cell phone decided it waa going to doublea+post when I hit the back arrow.

Does that 5-speed gear selector sticker come with the Prodrive shift knob? I ordered one and didn't get one.
subaru3169 03-04-2007 12:47 AM

hey cool!! could just used any kind of sock though
Bacon117 03-04-2007 04:16 AM

I've got to admit, it looks like somthing my grandma made! A little girly.... I just man up and take the cold, or heat.

haha, that sticker would be good.. I've taught a couple people to drive a stick in my car, "what gear am i in?" lol
crewchief97 03-04-2007 09:43 AM

I personnally don't really care for the knob sock, but i must give you props for your gauge installation...that is nice, clean and different :)
Kahres05 03-04-2007 12:21 PM

Yeah....I see what everyone is saying. Having something crochet is'nt exactly manly. Is it pretty cool that you can have it made to match the scheme of your car, it's either this or driving gloves when the extremes hit. Baby socks is a good idea as well. Thanks for the compliment of the gauge install :)

My solution is a bit more refined. It involves using a different material than metal. Its called acetal copolymer. its a plastic based polymer that doesn't get hot or cold like metal, itll stay the same temps as the steering wheel all year long.

I do like those...you do nice work. I actually thought about getting one to try out....I do like the sphere with the groves..AT &T style; someone mentioned putting rubber o-rings in the grooves; even better....not to sound cheap, but the price you want for a piece or hard plastic seems a little high. Unless your putting in 3 hours of labor where the price is justified.
WRXDriftR 03-04-2007 12:49 PM

Each piece is hand made, thats where the price comes from. If I had a CNC machine where I could just push some buttons and let it do the work then prices would be much cheaper. Its a case of getting what you pay for, a truly unique piece for your car. Each one has got a little bit of character to it.

Something nobody else can offer to you.

My college has a machine shop open to all alumni. They have a cnc mill which is nice, but they got rid of the cnc lathe. I would have definetly made a knob if it was still around!

props for the silver wagon! I have an 02 Silver wagon.

i've been making these as well. except mine have a drilled out center that has a metal piece that threads in to add a little weight. im thinking of making a few more and applying for vendor status.

I took Hank's advice and used a baby sock...baby mittens will work also. I used a baby sock featuring the alphabet...never to late to brush up on the basics while shifting. Works like a charm

Nice, thats what I'm going to do. Much cheaper than buying a new knob. Especially when the one I have is perfect for me.
WhiteFox 03-04-2007 10:25 PM

Everytime I see one of these threads I always laugh, man up and deal with the cold, Heat is never a problem with mine, it does get cold, but I just shift and keep my hand off it.

 How dare you tell me to man up with my baby sock!
I agree with the coldness....but man in the summer it got unbearable. When I lived in the desert with 100+ weather the knob was untouchable.
Dizmal 03-04-2007 10:34 PM

Heh, I have maned up for the last few years. But a cheap baby sock is looking mighty tempting!
Hank3 03-04-2007 11:26 PM

Yeah, manning up with a cold knob is cool (no pund intended) with me, but when it's hot enough to brand your hand, I'll woman up and use my knob sock ;)
silverwrx666 03-05-2007 08:11 AM

I never had a problem with mine on my old 04 wrx for 2 years. I had driving gloves in the winter and the ac takes care of the heat in the summer.
Kahres05 03-05-2007 08:52 AM

From the reply's, I guess it's all about where and when the car is parked or possibly your parked in some shade. I agree cold is no a real big issue for me but branding my hand is. If it sits in the sun long enough, especially if the knob is metal, it will eventually become untouchable. As far as the sleeve my honey made...I really like it. The baby sock pics rock!...lol
WRXDriftR 03-05-2007 10:59 AM

when I used an aluminum knob, putting up the full-windshield sunshade made the metal touchable even when it was 105*F inside the car.
I think the direct light heats it up much more than radiant heat alone.
