Burns to stay with Subaru??

This in off the wire:

July 24, 2001
Despite an intensely disappointing season without a single victory to his credit, Richard Burns insists that there is no question of his moving to Peugeot in 2002.

The British star was linked with Peugeot last year, but commented that he extended his contract with Subaru to the end of next season at the time.

"They re-negotiated last year, which was good of them, because they didn't have to. The result is they've got a very happy driver. I talk to Peugeot every year. We always talk. I have a contract with Subaru," Burns commented.

Subaru also has open-ended commitments to number two Petter Solberg and number three Markko Martin, as well as Japan's Toshihiro Arai, the only man to have won a rally in an Impreza WRC2001 so far.

So there you have it. Burns must be getting paid some really good money for sticking with Subaru, but it sounds like he will be going to Peugot for the 2002 season. Who knows, maybe if his luck turns and he does really well the rest of the season with the new cars he'll stick with Subaru. However he does sort of fit into the Peugot team. Remember the fit between Panizzi and Delcour in the 2000 series?

Prodrive: Uh Hello, Tommi Makkinen, Yes we have this position over here with the Subaru Team...

Umm... Mark Lovell has won 3 SCCA rallies with the WRC car...

But, of course, the US doesn't count... ;)
mykrrrr 07-25-2001 05:35 AM

Using a WRC car in the SCCA is like using a WRC car against a 1979 Mazda RX7...oh wait it is...heheheh

Who knows where Burns will end up but more importantly who's gonna fill his shoes???

I don't think Solberg has the experience to be #1 driver.

Perhaps Juha will come back...please please pretty please!!! :D

Dissenter 07-25-2001 11:11 AM

A certain Collin McRae comes to mind as having done pretty well for the scooby team in the past. I know he's been really pissed at Ford's cars overheating lately.
Skeandhu 07-25-2001 02:23 PM

I'm with Dissenter - bring McRae back to Subaru!!

I'd hate to say it, but he certainly appears to be the better driver. If it wasn't for Ford's technical problems, they'd be spending a lot more time on the podium (As if they haven't had enough already this season)...
scooby snack 07-25-2001 05:37 PM

Colin, Petter, Toshi
That would be a kick a** combo! I really think Petter has it in him though, just a matter of time. And he's sooo cute! :D
nitrousjunkie68 07-25-2001 09:25 PM

i would really like to see colin back in a subaru. i think that he would have a lot of success in a subaru. just like in the old days.
edkwon 07-26-2001 04:07 AM

Here here! Colin and the return to Subaru would be a most excellent reunion of two most bodacious pillars in rally racing! *turns off Bill & Ted speak*

Seriously, i would be very excited to see what Colin can do at the wheel of the new Impreza WRC car. He still has the skillz, too bad Ford's technology can't keep up with him!

Lightning Jack 07-26-2001 05:32 AM

Hehehe they should hire me!!! and only me!!!

subie is in a third place right now with a 28 points i believe?

while Lacer Evo is holding 64 points and Focus is eating up 60 points.

Yes they really do need me to fill in the gap! bad! :D :D :D
Ryouga 07-26-2001 11:09 AM

You guys are way off base. Subaru should bring back ... Carlos Sainz. :D

He's almost as fast as Colin, but he's more consistent as well (so long as the car doesn't let him down).
caino 07-26-2001 04:22 PM

yea, they should hire me....

i have a lot of back woods, off road experience in my 1990 pontiac 6000 AWD

go ahead, laugh all you want....but i have taken that thing through places 4wd trucks wouldn't go, up inclines the same trucks wouldn't go, around bends faster than my buddy's stealth rt (except when i drive it ;oP)

*sigh* well, i can keep dreaming, can't i?

my 6000 is about on it's last legs after some 160k odd miles, most of which I have been very tough on that car. So now i'm trying for a MY01 RS...I love the AWD ways and will never go back (maybe I'll end up with a typhoon or a syclone)

I seriously do have some great driving skills that I hope to get to show off at autox events next year...maybe I'll eventually one day be able to race for subaru

Tommi: I don't know, I'm really enjoying my EVO. I rather like being in first.

Okay, maybe I'm being a little lame. I have no idea what Tommi would really say, since I don't know much about him. But really, you think he'd leave Mitsu when he's having such great success with them? Subaru would have to offer a good price, I think.

For some reason I like Petter, and keep rootin' for him. Go Petter! Toshi is cool, too.

I know, Tommi and Colin! With Petter in the third car. Oh wait, that would leave out either Toshi or Markko. That wouldn't quite be fair. Never mind.

I'd say they should hire me, but really, we want Subaru to win.
grandmasterchan 07-27-2001 11:52 AM

How long is Colin's current contract for?
motorob 07-27-2001 03:44 PM

A lot of the great drivers stuffed a lot of cars when they were young, until they gained the experience necessary to know when it's better to go fast by going slow. It's a lot easier to have a lionheart and teach him to restrain himself than it is to teach someone to have a lot of courage.

Maybe Petter will be one of these.
Rallyspec 07-28-2001 12:48 PM

well if he goes to peugot, then good for him. 206 rally car has to be one of the best out there. its a damned champ. granted i dont know how many times it has won first but a lot more than subaru this year. so good for him peugot makes a great WRC car. and who ever said anythign about TOMMI. he blows. this guys tears up every car he gets into and then ends up off the hillside, hits trees. he is scary. i would hate to see him on the street, garnted he is still good, but for the love of god, Tommi stop breaking your cars.....
Tim K. 07-28-2001 10:50 PM

Rallyspec,

How many driver's can you name that have won 4 WRC Driver's Championships in a row? Currently he is tied with Juha, Carlos, and Colin with 23 WRC Career victories, but none of the others have as many Driver's Titles. Plus, Juha is retired (though he is testing the Accent), and Carlos is considering retiring.

Putting 4 back to back titles is a hell'uva accomplishment.

Tommi is one of the best.
Rallyspec 07-29-2001 02:57 AM

Tim.
Of course he is, with 23 wins he must be doing something right. maybe its the jealousy i have towards him. he can bust up a half million dollar car, fly off the road and into a tree(cyprus rally) and theyll fix it for him and i can bust up mine and itll stay broken. oh well. thats life. but yes i do agree with you, he and mcrae are the greats..but i seem to watch the rallies where makinen rips out his suspension or flies off the road
Tim K. 07-31-2001 11:44 AM

Rallyspec,

That might be because he's gettin' old - and so is the car. :D
jaybird 07-31-2001 12:55 PM

Where have you guys been McRae has won three of the last four events. He is most likely going to win the championship. The Fords have had no where near as many problems with reliablity this year. Tommi's car has been new since like the 2nd or 3rd event and IIRC he just signed a new contract. If Burns leaves the SWRT (which I really don't see happening) I think they will go after Sainz. Yes he's thinking of retiring, but he seems like the type to want to go out with a bang. Thats not gona happen with him being the #2 guy with Ford. He has been less happy with them then McRae has been. It would be a great learning opportunity for Solberg, Martin and Aria. Plus he's been with Subaru before and did pretty well.
cvalle-sd 07-31-2001 10:03 PM

Busting up a car - the difference is that you're in your street car, and Tommi is in a Grp.A rally car. You're passing Camrys, Accords, and Caravans on the the Interstate, and he's pushing triple digits on a one-lane dirt road in a forest somewhere. Makkinen (one k or two?) does a LOT more driving before the stuffing starts.

I think that McRae would like for the Ford thing to work out. His da drove Fords, and there's the whole UK Ford connection. I do think Burns is a candyass. He can sure drive, but I think a lot of his failures are lapses in "nerve", for want of a better term. rolling off a hill after the time control, going off because a sign was posted on the roadside, his Swedish meltdown...classic. He's not as good under pressure, and I think that is the the backbone of a rally champion. Look at any of the coverage of champions like Carlos or Tommi, or Juha, especially in-car , and they're ICE. Rallying is about what you can do on the edge of adhesion, the edge of concentration, on the edge of a cliff...that's not Burns. (IMHO)
Ghostrider 08-01-2001 01:43 AM

if petter is not crashing hes winning, he has got to be my favorite driver, hes young so give him time and he will win, oh yes he will win. oh yeah and i like the way he talks in his interviews hehe petter rocks!:D
Rallyspec 08-01-2001 04:08 AM

CVALLE you are clueless. make sure you stay in cali
cvalle-sd 08-01-2001 07:12 PM

Sorry I'm clueless - I forgot you guys compete.

ps- he's still in a whole other sphere. That's why other people pay for his spares.
Tim K. 08-02-2001 08:26 AM

Jaybird,

Its a new car now...

First outing scheduled for Sanremo [31/07/01 - 09:36]

Freddy Loix testing the Lancer WRC
in Britain last week.

itsubishi Motors today officially launches its first ever World Rally Car, the Lancer Evolution WRC. The car was first seen at the Geneva motorshow but last week Ralliart driver Freddy Loix got his first taste of the latest version of the Lancer in Great Britain at the Millbrook Proving Ground, situated to the north of London.

The Lancer WRC is closely based on the firm's Lancer Cedia four-door saloon from which it takes its styling, but it can exploit the extra freedom offered by the World Rally Car rules in a number of key areas. Mitsubishi Ralliart engineers have been able to change the suspension, some elements of the bodywork and the weight distribution. "It was great to drive the car for the first time," exclaimed Freddy. "The regulations allow us greater flexibility in certain areas and I think this, combined with elements of our current car, mean we can look forward to a really competitive package. The engineers have already made good steps with the engine and wheel travel at the front, and the weight distribution is much better. It feels different, not hugely, but still different."

Next up on the schedule for the Lancer WRC is a full-on test schedule. Ralliart will concentrate on asphalt work at first as the car will get its first competitive outing at the Sanremo Rally, followed of course by the Tour de Corse. The team planes to cover up to 4000 km before the first of these two asphalt rounds but after that, extensive gravel testing will follow.

"Straight out of the box the new car worked well," said Mitsubishi Ralliart Europe Chief Engineer Bernard Lindauer last week, "but we must be realistic that we have a lot of work ahead of us. (…) "There is always a question of reliability with new cars. However, we have always had reliable parts in the past and done simulation tests in conjunction with the Japanese engineers, so hopefully any problems will be kept to a minimum.

Now we have reached the point where the imbalance between Group A and World Rally Car regulations, and the resulting increased performance of World Rally Cars, puts Mitsubishi in the situation where we could not have all the development facilities available. The only way for us to improve performance and to gain more post-development benefit on the standard car was to follow World Rally Car rules," concluded Lindauer.

Tommi Makinen will be using the Lancer WRC on the last four rounds of the World Rally Championship. In light of the Finn's leading position in the 2001 season standings, let's hope he won't experience any unforeseen problems with his new car.
